Thought For The Week

Life without God is like an unsharpened pencil - - it has no point.”

CELEBRATION OF THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION: In Holy Communion (the Lord’s Supper), we receive, together with the bread and wine, the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, given and shed for us for the forgiveness of sins. Scripture urges us to receive the Sacrament worthily. Those who receive the Sacrament worthily are those who are baptised, repent of their sin, trust in Jesus Christ as their only Saviour, believe in his real presence in the Sacrament and intend to lead a holy life in obedience to God’s Word. In Holy Communion, we are united with Christ and with one another. By communing together, we say: “We are one in our faith. We believe and confess the same things about Jesus Christ and his Supper”. If you are not a member of the Lutheran Church and you have questions about attending the Lord’s Supper, please arrange to speak to Pastor prior to attending.

Prayer of the Day: Let us pray for guidance. (brief silence)

Loving God, we thank you that you lead us like a good shepherd, caring for your sheep. Let us hear your voice, and guide us in safety along your right path. We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

General

16 July 2018

From Tuesday 10th to Thursday 12th July 2018 over 230 Lutheran pastors from across Australia and New Zealand met at St Michael’s Lutheran Church and School in Hahndorf, SA, for the triennial General Pastors Conference of the Lutheran Church of Australia. Pastors gathered in table groups, ably led by the Conference Chairman, Assistant LCA Bishop Dr Andrew Pfeiffer. Over three days we worshipped and communed, prayed and studied, encouraged each other, and worked together earnestly and prayerfully to serve the church by discussing matters of a theological and confessional nature referred to us through the General Church Council in advance of the 19th General Convention of Synod this October in Sydney. Those matters involved a number of proposals submitted by congregations on:

The ordination of women and men, including the Draft Doctrinal Statements prepared by the Commission on Theology and Inter Church Relations on the issue and whether it need be church divisive;

The communion of infants

Full membership of the Lutheran World Federation and the International Lutheran Council

The advice and recommendations of the Conference on these matters will be available to Convention delegates and the wider church very soon. I encourage delegates to receive and consider this material as you prepare for the October meeting. In a full program pastors also engaged in presentations on biblical exegesis, what it means to be a confessional Lutheran in church planting and school mission, and clergy self-care. They discussed the LCA’s arrangements for ecclesiastical discipline, and expressed gratitude for the General Church Council’s decision that the LCA join the Australian National Redress Scheme following the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Along the way we were most grateful for the generous care and provision of the wonderful people of St Michael’s, and the hardworking organising committee, which included key staff from the SA-NT District and Church-wide offices. There was a fine tone to the meeting. Pastors related to one other with evident care and compassion. They asked the Bishops to prepare a general statement of encouragement for all of us in the LCA to act likewise. (Continued next page)

Lutheran Community Care - Barossa Lutheran Community Care (LCC) is about to conduct a Consultation Workshop with the broader Barossa service organisations, providers, agencies and businesses including Lutheran stakeholders. The Consultation is in relation to the identification of newly emerging needs/trends and potential ways that the services might be strengthened through new partnerships in order to ensure that services are responsive to current needs in the community. The Consultation will take place on 27 July. After the Consultation LCC will invite representatives of all local Lutheran Congregations and Lutheran services in the Barossa to an information time to share these responses. We will reflect on the current ministries of LCC and discuss the Consultation outcomes to see if there are any other areas where LCC can serve the community. LCC’s vision is to develop strong, caring communities inspired through the love of God. Through this Consultation process we pray that God opens doors which helps us to better serve our community. I would like to thank you all for your current and ongoing support of the ministry work of LCC in the Barossa and surrounding regions. In his service, James Doecke Engagement Manager LCC

The statement reads: The God of love and peace will be with you (2 Cor.13:11b). In spite of differences, the pastorate of the LCA is united in its concern for the unity of the church and has asked the Bishops to provide pastoral advice regarding the possible outcomes of the vote on the DDS on the ordination of women and men. We acknowledge that this discussion leads to anxiety and pain for many. Whether the church decides to retain or change its teaching, there are likely to be those whose deeply held convictions put them at odds with the church’s teaching on this matter. As we work with the outcome of any synodical decision, the Bishops encourage people to respect the burden of conscience for some. This can be done when we all

recall that through our common baptism into Christ we remain united with each other;

put the best construction on the motives of others (Luther’s Small Catechism explanation to the 8th Commandment);

make every effort to avoid unnecessary damage to the church and the proclamation of the gospel.

The Bishops encourage all of us as God’s people to enter into prayerful reflection in the days leading up to and beyond the synod and to continue to be patient, showing restraint, whatever may happen. In the name of the Triune God, let us all strive to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Eph 4:3).

God’s peace be with you all, Pastor John Henderson LCA Bishop Adelaide, 15th July 2018

The Pacific war in New Guinea: remembering the dead. Dr Christine Winter, a historian at Flinders University with a special interest in the German presence in PNG, reflects on the stories of those who lived and died next to each other during WWII - New Guinea villagers, missionaries, Australians, Germans and Japanese. Can ‘we’ share grief across former enemy nations and different cultures? And what do ‘we’ gain by doing this? You are invited to the next Friends of Lutheran Archives (FoLA) meeting on Monday 23rd July, Bethlehem House, Sudholz Place in the City. 7.30 pm, gold coin donation, supper included. All welcome.

Please send any notices for inclusion to the parish email address by Thursdays at 9.00 am: [email protected] or by hand to the office, or to Pastor Wally or Pastor David.
