Editor’s Update Welcome to Barnet Seniors’ Insider

Back in May we held our Spring Assembly which was a great success thanks to the support of local organisations and charities as well as our BSA volunteers, who were all willing to give their time and make donations.

Special thanks to Sainsbury’s Golders Green who made a donation towards the lunch provided on the day. Peter Cragg for donating a beautiful fruit hamper. Finchley Nurseries donated a £20 voucher to spend on plants in their centre. Clive Smith of Memories, Brent St, donated a voucher to choose a framed image of Barnet in the past. They really helped to make it an enjoyable day.

Autumn is fast approaching and the days are getting shorter. It really is time to consider your health and well-being. With that in mind, take advantage of the London Fire Brigade’s free home checks as well as making sure you contact your GP for your flu jab. Getting out and about becomes a little more challenging as we know most people are worried about being out when it’s dark. One tip might be to join classes now and make friends so you can find a ‘buddy ‘ to travel with during the Autumn evenings

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF PROSTATE CANCER? Most men with early prostate cancer don’t have any signs or symptoms.

One reason for this is the way the cancer grows. You’ll usually only get early symptoms if the cancer grows near the tube you urinate through (the urethra) and presses against it, changing the way you urinate (pee). But because prostate cancer usually starts to grow in a different part of the prostate, early prostate cancer often doesn’t press on the urethra and cause symptoms.

If you do notice changes in the way you urinate, this is more likely to be a sign of a very common non-cancerous problem called an enlarged prostate, or another health problem. But it’s still a good idea to get it checked out. Possible changes include:

▪ difficulty starting to urinate or emptying your bladder

▪ a weak flow when you urinate ▪ a feeling that your bladder hasn’t emptied properly ▪ dribbling urine after you finish urinating ▪ needing to urinate more often, especially at night ▪ a sudden urge to urinate – you may sometimes leak

before you get to the toilet. If prostate cancer breaks out of the prostate (locally advanced prostate cancer) or spreads to other parts of the body (advanced prostate cancer), it can cause other symptoms, including:

▪ back pain, hip pain or pelvis pain ▪ problems getting or keeping an erection ▪ blood in the urine or semen ▪ unexplained weight loss.

These symptoms can also be caused by other things that aren’t prostate cancer, like prostatitis (infection and swelling of the prostate), diabetes or some medicines. But it’s still a good idea to get any symptoms

checked out by your GP so they can find out what’s causing them and make sure you get the right treatment if you need it.

MENS HEALTH MATTERS!DID YOU KNOW? USEFUL INFO.

CHOOSING HOME CARE The process of looking for care can feel overwhelming - especially if it’s the first time you have had to think about it. It is important that you make an informed choice for all of you

SPECIFYING THE RIGHT TYPE OF CARE As a first step, have a conversation with your loved one to find out what support they may need. You may want to find out more about the difference between home care and residential care and the difference in costs between these. Residential care involves someone leaving their home, memories and belongings to relocate into a facility dedicated to round the clock care. Whilst home care is looking after a person from the comfort of their own home where carers go into the house to help with aspects such as home help, personal care, companionship and dementia care.

THE VALUE OF CARE AT HOME We understand that, where possible, most people would prefer to stay living at home where their precious memories are. Getting a little extra support at home is a good step to introduce the idea of care slowly. It can also work out as great value for money. Home care is flexible and can be anything from a couple of visits a week right through to 24/7 live in care. We have seen that home care can help prevent accidents and loneliness and enables independent living through the support of help in the home. The continuity of care offers loved-ones health and wellbeing - giving you peace of mind that any changes in behaviour, mobility or appetite will be spotted.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT ORGANISATION You will find home care providers divided primarily into three groups; introduction agencies, private companies and local council. For Barnet, Adult Social Services could be your first contact. Unlike introduction agencies, all private care companies must be registered with the Care Quality Commission. You may want to look at its most recent inspection report of the company which will provide a rating on how the service is performing. The independent regulator in England is the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The regulator has a duty to monitor and inspect all organisations providing care to ensure standards are being met. Homecare.co.uk is the leading source of independent home care reviews and features more than 11,000 reviews. HOME INSTEAD SENIOR CARE BARNET Home Instead, a national company, have a team of trained and experienced care givers. They take time to select empathetic, enthusiastic people who want to build positive caring relationships with their clients. Book a free consultation by calling 0208 446 7044 or emailing [email protected].

Celebrating Barnet Silver Sunday in 2019 From Tuesday 1st October to Sunday 6th October 2019.

All seniors in Barnet are invited to join in Barnet Silver Week activities. Silver Sunday Afternoon Tea is on Sunday 6th October Copthall Leisure Centre , Champions Way NW4 1PX

FREE car parking , Transport link Bus 221, if you are in need of mobility assistance please contact Joyce Mbewe on 020 8359 2519

The week of activities and events celebrate the value and knowledge older people contribute to our community while reducing social isolation and loneliness. Silver Sunday is a National event and was launched in 2012 by The Sir Simon Milton Foundation and Westminster City Councillor Christabel Flight, after a report discovered more than a third of people over 75 said they were lonely. The aim then was to celebrate older residents, recognise their contribution to their communities and help combat loneliness as well as get them out and about to meet new people. In Barnet, we have taken it one step further, Silver Sunday week is a great opportunity to showcase what is on offer locally for older residents, get them engaged in all the local voluntary organisations as well as understanding the support that the Barnet Prevention and Wellbeing team can offer. This programme of events will empower individuals to find solutions, activities and join in events which will improve their health and wellbeing. This year the Prevention and Wellbeing Team at Barnet Council are supporting the local Voluntary and Community Sector organisations to help celebrate Barnet Silver Week which is a platform to showcase the Preventative Services within the borough by organising a range of preventative activities. Last year Barnet hosted over 80 activities and events throughout the borough including sport and leisure activities, pampering, beauty therapies, information events covering a range of topics including health and wellbeing, local history and avoiding scams. There were various afternoon teas/coffee mornings. As a direct result of Barnet Silver Week, 167 Health & Wellbeing consultations were carried out including Diabetes screening and Hearing screening sessions. Overall 1277 people had meaningful conversations or took part in events and activities throughout the week. Lots of people signed up to continue to attend activities following Barnet Silver Week and we look forward to seeing you all again! Silver Sunday Afternoon Tea Party on Sunday 6th October will be in a brand new location, hosted by London Borough of Barnet and the Barnet Seniors’ Association. There will be stalls and performances and the announcing of the supported housing Art Competition winners. Barnet Silver Week Tuesday 1st October to Sunday 6th October 2019, a full schedule of events will be available shortly at www.barnet.gov.uk/silverweek2019 Did you know that International day of Older Persons is on Tuesday 1st October 2019?

LFB believe that successful firefighting starts with prevention. So they have introduced a service where they can visit you, a loved-one or someone you care for at home to provide personalised advice about fire safety. It's totally free, available 24/7, and they will even fit free smoke alarms during the visit if you need them.

With autumn just around the corner and the evenings getting darker, this is the perfect time to book a home visit. They are able to visit any time that suits including evenings.

This really is beneficial for anyone who lives alone, is over 60 or has limited mobility. Also if you live with vision or hearing impairments and would have difficulty responding to an alarm or escaping from a fire.
