    1 Swimming Pathway

Barker Foundation Aquatic Centre (the Centre) provides Learn to Swim (LTS) and Squad classes for children 6 months old through to adults. Lessons are held both morning and afternoon, including Saturdays and Sundays. Swimmers can enrol at any time throughout the year (refer “Enrolments” on page 5).

The Barker Foundation Aquatic Centre Programs have many layers:

    • Water awareness for infants

    • Classes for Pre-schoolers, School-aged children, Teenagers & Adults

    • Regular assessments and promotions as the child progresses

    • Private tuition classes for all levels

    • LTS classes for beginner and intermediate levels (Jellyfish to Turtle) are 30 minute sessions

    • LTS classes for advanced levels (Goldfish) are 45 minute sessions

    • LTS classes for Transition level (pre-squads) are 60 minute sessions

    • All classes are conducted by nationally accredited swimming instructors and coaches

    • For a child to progress through the program, frequency and regularity of attendance is essential, as this has a major impact on the rate of development

    Progressions

    • Instructors, Coaches and Deck Supervisors are continually assessing students on an ongoing basis. The Deck Supervisor will advise the parent/guardian of their child’s promotion to a higher level. This may require a change in class enrolment which can be done immediately or via email, based on class availability.

    • If parents/guardians have any concerns about their child’s progress, they should contact the Centre and our LTS Program Coordinator will be happy to discuss their situation further

Note: Consistency is the key. Our program is built with instructors who offer their commitment and dedication to your child’s progression and learning experience here at Barker Aquatics.

Too many makeups and changes to routine has demonstrated to compromise consistency.

Squad Pathway - A Skill for Life

Be it recreational or competitive; swimming offers many benefits to young athletes. They develop self-discipline, the ability to accept and apply feedback, focus, good sportsmanship and time management skills. Extending to competition swimming allows the athlete to experience success and to learn how to deal with defeat; to plan and work towards set objectives while becoming healthy and physically fit.

At Swim@Barker we not only develop swimmers but also confident, healthy and independent individuals who can build on a strong foundation to reach their full potential both in and out of the pool.

At Swim@Barker we believe that swimming is a skill for life.

The Swim@Barker recreational swim program is tailored to suit a wide range of ability and fitness. Whether you are keen to maintain a healthy active lifestyle, keeping fit in the off-season, using the pool for rehabilitation/recovery or working your way back to competitive swimming, we have a squad program to suit your needs.

    6. Swimwear & Pool Use

    6.1 Swim Caps

In the interests of safety, supervision and pool filtration, all swimmers are required to wear the designated coloured swim cap appropriate for the group level during lessons (parent & child classes are exempt).

A complimentary cap is issued at the time of initial enrolment and all progressions throughout the learn to swim levels.

    6.2 Swim Costumes

Swim costumes are to be worn at all times in the water. Children who are not toilet trained are required to wear protective swimpants.

Rash vests are allowable for under 3 years and beginner-stage swimmers only - for more advanced swimmers, these can inhibit the progress of a child as this type of swim wear tends to cling to the body and restrict movement. Board shorts are not allowed for any age/level.

    6.3 Swim Goggles

Goggles are not mandatory; however the Centre encourages the wearing of goggles for Seahorse LTS classes and above.

    6.4 Pool Rules

    • No glass containers to be taken on the pool deck

    • No food or drink other than water is to be consumed on the pool deck or within the change room area

    • Chewing Gum is banned within the whole Aquatic Centre

    • No running within the pool deck area

    • No diving in the 17m pool. Supervised and/or assisted dives in the 25m pool with an Instructor are allowed

    • For all Parent/Guardian & Child classes, a parent/guardian must be in the pool with their child at all times. Please be prepared to get wet. Only one (1) Parent/Guardian is allowed in the pool per child.

  • 14 • Swim Program Terms & Conditions

    7. Centre Lesson Cancellations - LTS Only

    8. Public Holidays and End of Year Centre Closures

    9. Recording Devices

Class occupancy is a major factor in determining whether or not a class will need to be cancelled. In the event that a chosen class is not 60% full, the Aquatic Centre Learn to Swim Coordinator may contact families to re-schedule another available time/day.

Should the Centre close due to facility or structural issues, a credit will be applied to the Parent/Guardian’s account and will only be available for a period of six (6) months from the date of issue. For incidental pool closures of less than half a day, make-up lessons will be offered for any cancelled classes.

The Centre is closed on Public Holidays and for two (2) weeks over the Christmas/New Year period each year. No fees will be charged during these days.

No recording devices may be used by families anywhere within the Aquatic Centre. This includes, but is not limited to: smart phones, tablets, cameras and video/digital camcorders.

Please Note: To assist with the explanation of skills, Barker swimming instructors may be required to visually record a child’s swimming technique as part of the instructional process. All recordings are deleted daily.
