you become a part of. My message to all of our people is if there is something you don’t understand, please ask. If there is something you don’t like, please offer to change it. If there is something you love, then get involved in helping us keep it that way. We are a firm that is excited about evolving as we grow. Other than our values (which always stay true), we do nothing today like we did 10 years ago, and we will do nothing 10 years from now like we do today – if we are, then we’ve failed in our collective responsibility to evolve. We encourage our people to take the time to understand our culture, then become an active part of it, then help to evolve it. This approach has been paramount to our success in creating a great place to work for all these years and I hope, for years to come.

Joining Baringa will be as exciting for you as it will be for us. We are an ever growing and evolving firm that continues to impact our industries through the work we do, impact our society through the charitable service we provide to it, and impact our colleagues through the support we show each other.

A note from our Managing Partner

Adrian BettridgeManaging Partner

Welcome to Baringa! If you are reading this pack, you are considering applying for an Analyst role, and we’re delighted that you want to explore a career with us. I’m often asked what it is like to have watched the firm grow over the last 10 years, and

my response is always the same – the next 10 years are even more exciting than the last. I genuinely believe that you’ll be joining us at as good a time as ever. You’ll be astounded by the wealth of passion, knowledge and experience that exists at Baringa, and the genuine warmth that is shared by everyone – I’ve been here for a long time, and it still really is an exciting place to be.

We place great emphasis on our values, because values are at the heart of this firm and they engender a culture that means a lot to all of us. But our culture is only as strong as the people who live it. Culture isn’t something you sit and observe from the sidelines, it is something that

Upon joining I had a week of training with the other on boarding analysts, this included General Consulting Excellence and Exceltraining. Following this I started work on short (2-3 week), deliverable focused projects which were typically strategy or analytical work. This included; Producing energy market reports on Singapore and the Philippines for opportunity analysis and market entry strategy for the extension of a clients trading business capabilities into new markets and market research on independent suppliers and innovative business offerings of retailers (smart meters, peer-to-peer, microgrids) to advise a client on their mid term business strategy.

The great thing about these types of projects is that they are very diverse, and you are trusted to make a key contribution to deliverables. I’ve learnt so much about so many different areas of the energy industry, and had the opportunity to work in teamswith a lot of different people at Baringa. The projects have been interesting and challenging – exactly what I was after when coming into industry.

Outside of project work, I have been involved with the emerging market and new markets internal initiatives in Baringa. There are also Friday drinks, as well as frequent socials for analysts and each business unit – so lots of opportunity to meet people throughout Baringa.

Analyst Experiences

Having no previous experience in consulting, I found the training when I joined invaluable- and rather than being nervous about working with my first client I found myself excited. I also got to spend time with a group of other analysts across the business, allowing me insight into different sectors and to make friends.

After training I started working on a high profile and industry steering project for the ENA - the impact assessment for future energy market frameworks within the UK. The project had a wide array of energy network stakeholders with differing points of views, a challenging start to somebody with no management consultancy background - however between the other Baringa staff on the project and my training, I never felt out of my depth. Throughout the project I’ve been impressed by the knowledge, approach and quality of deliverables from the Baringa, inspiring me to contribute value throughout the work I was doing.

My first impression of both the company, and EMA in particular, was very positive. I like how open the culture is: there are so many initiatives and groups of interest. The analyst programme is very well prepared: it helped me understand the context of Baringa and the Energy & Resources area, and gave me the tools to know where to look / who to ask in the future.Everybody in the team has been very friendly, helpful and supportive.

In my very first projects, I was very thankful to the Project Manager for explaining to me the context and to make sure that I had colleagues to work with in the projects who could help me get started.

I think it is very good to have the figure of an Advisor that tries to understand your goals/motivations/skills so that you can bedirected to projects that are aligned to that.

To me, the most important part of my job, is the people I work with! I really appreciated that everybody took the time to come by and say hi to me in my first days – it really made a difference!Name: Andrea Rodriguez

I have greatly enjoyed my time at Baringa so far. After coming from an academic research background I wanted to be exposed to a wide variety of projects, which I certainly have been in EMA. With projects varying in length from a couple days to several months, I have had the opportunity to gain experience in a large number of different roles. These roles have included carrying out market analysis and asset valuation for a large volume of renewable portfolios, commercial framework design for distributed generation services, and modelling the GB balancing mechanism.

The week of analyst training provided shortly after I joined was very helpful in my transition from academia to consulting. In addition, having very knowledgeable colleagues has been invaluable when working on a new topic.

Developed hydrogen supply chain model

Project completion date: March 2017 – July 2017

BEIS wanted to develop a more detailed understanding of the costs and technical considerations associated with widespread use of hydrogen to help decarbonise building heat. This is to help inform an updated heat strategy, including potential long term repurposing of the gas distribution network to hydrogen.

BEIS required a detailed cost-optimization model of the hydrogen (and associated carbon capture and storage) value chain that they are able to use in-house.

Benefits delivered

Drawing on Baringa’s expertise in whole energy system modelling and optimization techniques we developed a sophisticated (MIP) cost optimization model of the hydrogen and CCS value chains to help understand what, where and when different supply, storage and pipeline/tanker transmission technologies should be deployed in GB on the pathway from now to 2050.

One of the key challenges this helped to address is a better understanding of the spatial implications of different possible production, demand and geological storages sites (for both hydrogen and CO2) in different locations across GB.

The overall project was delivered in a structured and systematic way covering all of the steps from requirement definition through to in-house use of the model.

Our role

Baringa undertook a structured scoping exercise in discussion with BEIS analysts to define scope, core methodology and user interface requirements.

Managed separate ‘conceptual’ and technical peer review processes.

Managed interaction with parallel hydrogen data gathering exercise.

Delivered sophisticated and robust model along with supporting documentation and hands-on training to facilitate in-house use by BEIS analysts.

Spatial disaggregation of heat demand

Hydrogen and CCS value chains
