A crime scene investigation (CSI) workshop that includes lessons in forensics and crime lab chemistry to dust for fingerprints, analyze handwriting, test simulated blood types and more.

The workshops are 15 hours each, for one week apiece, and students can register for as many as they like. There are morning sessions, followed by a lunch period, then an afternoon session. Students who register for both the morning and afternoon sessions can stay on campus for the supervised lunch period at no additional cost.

Students can either bring a lunch from home or purchase a boxed lunch for $10.

Pricing is $195 per student per workshop, which includes all materials needed to participate in activities and a daily snack. Pricing with the optional daily lunch is $235.

Deadly Advice

A DEADLY TURN - One fisherman we see on a regular basis here in Slidell is

Captain Dudley Vandenborre, the designer of the “Deadly Dudley” lure series

and fisherman emeritus. Dudley sends much of his product to his customers

from my wife’s shipping and mailing center in the south area of the city and

through the years we have come to know him and his family. Dudley recently

had open heart surgery and missed most of the earlier spring speck runs in the

area. We’ve been actively working with Dudley to grace our reports with his

fishing knowledge since last year but pending media projects and other matters

had delayed things.

Until now. Dudley Vandenborre will begin a fishing feature this issue entitled

“DEADLY ADVICE”. Dudley will take your questions about fishing techniques,

tackle and fishing conditions and answer them. If you have a fishing question,

column, depending on available space. This is your chance to get a specific

APRIL TRIP GIVES NEW MEANING TO TERM “STORM CHASER”

by Tony OnellionI was headed to central Tennessee Monday for a funeral. The weather was going to be an issue, I knew, but the event was too important to worry about an occasional severe thunderstorm. In a younger day, I was a storm chaser of sorts. Having been fascinated by what my older granddaughter called a “tomato” when she saw a funnel cloud years ago, I had been an avid fan of twisters since “The Wizard of Oz.”

Most people haven’t experienced one and that’s a good thing, because these T-Rex’s of nature can kill you in so many ways we don’t even want to comprehend: blunt force trauma, crushing, asphyxiation. You rarely can outrun them and getting under an interstate overpass makes it even worse because the suction increases.

It was this scenario I imagined on Monday. Local Alabama radio (The Blaze) headquartered in Birmingham and Huntsville, provided the most comprehensive LOCAL severe storm coverage I have heard since listening to broadcaster Gary England in Oklahoma City more than 30 years ago. Gary, the featured t.v. meteorologist in the movie “Twister” used to say things like “Mrs. Jones west of El Reno….if you can move your petunias to the other side of your house, the little twister won’t bother them.”

Anyway, The Blaze was blazing away with a nonstop liturgy of warnings for little towns and crossroads in the Northeast Mississippi/Northwest Alabama areas, with reports about a twister that killed two people in the “Billy Bob Trailer Park “ in Limestone County and warnings to people in a dozen communities in five or six counties. I was listening, thinking thatLimestone County was ‘waaay to the west, around Muscle Shoals and Florence, meaning the storm was at least an hour away from posing any threat to me. As I crossed the Tennessee River along I-65 at Decatur, I was approaching the Tennessee state line with Huntsville to my right and a little town called Athens just to my northwest about two miles away and just off highway 72 and the interstate. I received a call from a good friend of mine, a retired publisher in Tuscaloosa whom I had lunch with just a couple of hours earlier. He told me I was heading straight into the weather.

I saw a gunpowder gray sky right over Athens and a serious bolt of lightning. I slowed down to contemplate my next move when I noticed about five 18-wheelers pulled off the highway to my right. One of them frantically motioned for me to pull over. I asked him what was up and he said the leading edge of the front was RIGHT THERE. I said ‘the radio reported an F-4 tornado approaching Athens in Limestone County…so I have time, right? The trucker told me, “sir, you ARE in Limestone County and that town right over there is Athens.” I decided to U-turn. However, the storm switched roles with me and as I headed south back towards Birmingham, the storm decided to cut off any westward movement back home.

I received another call from another retired publisher friend of mine (I need to retire!) who told me they had just had more than 5 inches of rain in three hours and a nearby community (Louisville, Mississippi) had been hit with a twister which killed two residents and caused considerable damage and flooding. Radio reports said the debris field was taking pieces of houses, cars, trees and other things more than 35,000 into the air. One heavy door snatched in Louisville plunged to Earth in Starkville on the Mississippi State campus - about 25 miles away. He also told me a tornado was headed east towards Meridian, Mississippi, making it dicey to take I-20 west out of Birmingham towards Tuscaloosa and ultimately Meridian.

I was going to stay the night in Birmingham but decided against it as reports of a tornado touchdown in Tuscaloosa County came on the air and I made my way towards Montgomery. Since I was so far from my destination, I decided to return home, arriving just before midnight and having driven 841 miles and more than 11 hours. Tuesday morning I heard reports of a tornado killing two people in Kimberly, just a few miles north of Birmingham just off I-65. Another tornado killed a college student in south Tuscaloosa and another tornado passed just north of my Tuscaloosa friend’s house in Northport and probably was the same tornado that hit Kimberly early Tuesday morning. The same reports mentioned that more super cells could be forming in Tennessee on Tuesday, just west of I-65 between Nashville and Huntsville. In the early afternoon. Centered near Columbia, Tennessee. The funeral was in Columbia, Tennessee. Scheduled to be over just before noon. Making the departure from this city 40 miles south of Nashville and 50 miles north of Decatur/Huntsville about the time of the formation of more bad weather. I really don’t like funerals but this one was important. But not as important as missing my own, which might have happened if it weren’t for The Blaze and a couple of retired publisher buddies of mine. We were going to press Tuesday when those possible cells might have formed and so I can only pray that my friends in Columbia dodged a bullet. Another active publisher friend’s hometown was hit by another tornado which killed two people in Fayetteville, Tennessee. Be aware….and careful…out there. It’s prime tornado season in the South.
