GETTING READY FOR THE DISTRICT CONFERENCE

An important part of the District Conference is the presentation of awards on Saturday, May 19. We have an excellent lineup of awards this year.

PRESIDENTIAL CITATATION AWARDS TO CLUBS

RI President Kalyan Banerjee has established criteria based on a club's Membership Growth and Rotary Foundation giving. The brochure describing the program can be found on the District website under "Site Pages," "About." EVERY ROTARIAN, EVERY YEAR (EREY)

CLUB BANNERS All clubs with 100% participation in the Annual Programs Fund of The Rotary Foundation will receive an Every Rotarian, Every Year banner. It will represent that every active member of the club has personally contributed some amount to the fund. This accomplishment must be completed prior to May 1 to receive the banner at the Conference.

DISTRICT 7190 CLUB SIGNIFICANT

PROJECT AWARDS We all join Rotary to "give back to the community." Here's recognition of club projects that do exactly that, with the following criteria: • Addresses a significant problem or need in the local community • Is based on personal service by a large number of club members • Enhances the image of Rotary in the community. Award entries must state:

Project title ________ Number of members in the club______ Number of members who actively participated in the project _____

Entries must include at least three and no more than five photographs of the project, could be "before," "after" and "during the work." At least one picture must prominently show Rotary identification. Entries must include a Project Description and how it meets the award criteria. All qualifying clubs will receive a framed certificate of recognition at the Conference. Submittal is due by April 13, 2012.

DISTRICT 7190 VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Clubs are invited to nominate an outstanding member of the community who demonstrates "Service above Self” for the good of the local area. Candidates for this award must be nonRotarians, living in the club's service area. The recipient receives a recognition plaque at the District Conference. Entries must state description of the particular service performed, as well as involvement in community, religious and/or professional life. Entry forms are available on the District website and are due by April 13, 2012.

DISTRICT 7190 STUDENT OF THE YEAR AWARD

This award is made to a high school junior or senior living or attending school within the club's area of service. The student must demonstrate SERVICE by involvement and leadership in school and community activities while maintaining a good academic record. A recommendation from someone familiar with the student's service contribution and an academic transcript should be included with the nomination form. The recipient is presented with a plaque and a $500 check at the District Conference. Entry forms are on the District website and are due by April 13, 2012.

2011-12 CHANGEMAKER AWARD FOR INTERACT CLUBS

The Interact service club for youth ages 14-18 has a special award for completing at least five of ten activity options during the Rotary year. These include ones that strengthen the individual club, carryout a project or fundraiser, or promote the Four-Way Test. A framed certificate of achievement is awarded to qualifying Interact clubs. In the coming weeks consider your club's qualification for these forms of recognition. Make a difference by supporting The Rotary Foundation, participating in a club project or nominating a volunteer or student. Bring your club to the forefront on May 19!! We can't close this article without recognizing the excellent 107th Rotary Birthday Party organized by the Glenville club. Good food, good times and good friends made the day!

any doubt that our St. Patrick’s Day Party will be quite the event??!

The Sport Island Pub will be the location of the Northville Rotary’s St. Patrick’s Day party on

Friday, March 16th. The event will begin at 5:00 with a social

hour followed by a buffet dinner at 6:00. (The buffet will include the traditional corned beef,

potatoes, cabbage, and Irish soda bread, as well as baked chicken and ziti for those who are not Irish through and through. Carrots, salad, and dessert will fill out the menu. )

The price of the ticket is $20 and will include tax and gratuity as well as a chance to win one of the monetary door prizes.

There will also be a raffle of a basket of spirits for $2 a ticket, 3 tickets for $5. In addition there will be an auction of a weekend stay at the Crowne Plaza Hotel at Times Square.

Live entertainment at the Pub will begin at 7:00 and top off a great evening.

For approximately 20 years, the Glenville area leading community Service Clubs have celebrated a wonderful, possibly unique, tradition of coming together for an annual Interclub Fellowship Dinner.

On April 24 the Rotary Clubs of Glenville, Scotia and Burnt Hills will meet with the Scotia Lions and Schenectady Kiwanians for a night of fellowship. In Rotary tradition, we rotate the hosting responsibility and this year the Lions will be our host. This year we will be meeting at Turf Tavern at 6pm for a dinner and presentation by a Director of the NE Regional Food Bank.

5TH ANNUAL CHICKEN & BISCUIT DINNER

Shenendehowa Rotary announces its 5th Annual

Chicken & Biscuit Dinner on March 3rd at the Vischer Ferry Fire Station, 360 Riverview Road, Rexford, from 4pm to 6pm. Proceeds will benefit local student Shenendehowa freshman Ben Mayo who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2009. Adult dinners are $10, seniors $8 and children 10 and under are $6. Dinners are being provided by Giffy’s Bar-B-Q. Dinner includes homemade chicken, vegetables and gravy over buttermilk biscuits served with mashed potatoes, tossed salad and beverage. Tickets may be obtained from any Shenendehowa Rotary member, from Giffy’s Bar-B-Q 373-9800, at any Shenendehowa Rotary breakfast or by emailing [email protected].

Shenendehowa Rotary is celebrating over fifty years as a service organization changing and saving lives in our community, through our professions, and throughout the world. Annual Water Walk

The Glens Falls Rotary Club is seeking teams to register for its Annual Water Walk to be held on Saturday, May 5th,2010 in Crandall Park, Glens Falls. The Water Walk continues to support its ongoing efforts in Haiti where the recovery from the massive 2010 earthquake has been a long slow process. Participants in the event allow tens of thousands of people in Haiti (and other poorer nations) enjoy water that is safe to drink through the money they raise. The club partners with Pure Water for the World and provides both water filtration facilities as well as necessary hygiene education and support. Haiti has suffered from both natural disasters and a subsequent Cholera outbreak that has left its population vulnerable to water-borne disease. Pure Water for the World aims to provide solutions for immediate relief and long-term planning to eradicate water-borne illness from the lives of these people. So far, the Rotary Club of Glens Falls has helped nearly 20,000 residents in southern Honduras access to potable water, provided support for the Glens Falls Medical Mission in their efforts in Guatemala and helped in Haiti with supplying treated water to residents of the slums of Port-au-Prince, water filters to countless others and a program of continuing hygiene training throughout Haiti. The number of lives touched by the club and by Pure Water for the World's efforts runs into the hundreds of thousands. Thanks to all who have supported or Water Walk and continue to do so. The Walk will run from 9 am to 3pm on Saturday, May 5th, 2012 at Crandall Park. Pre-registration of teams is preferred but walk-ins are always welcome. 107th Birthday Celebration!

Glenville Rotary hosted a party February 23 to celebrate the 107th Birthday of Rotary! The event was attended by 36 Rotarians and guests, and was held at the Hibernian Hall in Schenectady. The evening featured food, live entertainment, fun, and raffles! Rotary's birthday is celebrated each year on February 23; mark the date now for Saturday, February 23, 2013 for the 108th Birthday Celebration!!



BILL WILDERMUTH OF CHESTERTOWN CELEBRATES 50 YEARS AS A ROTARIAN

On February 7 the Chestertown Club held a special ceremony honoring William ("Bill") Wildermuth's 50 years of service to Rotary. Bill's Rotary membership began on Long Island in 1962, often vacationing on Loon Lake in following years and attending Chestertown meetings. He and his wife Doris moved to Adirondack on Schroon Lake 13 years ago at which time he became a member of the club. He is a proud supporter of The Rotary Foundation, as he is a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow and advocate of the Rotary Annuity. His son Don founded the Wilton Rotary Club and spearheaded the Lake George "Polar Plunge." Bill is the first and only member of the Chestertown Rotary Club to have a 50 year pin. In addition, he is the club's "personal rep" on Maui, Hawaii!

Salem Rotary Raises over $7,000

to Provide Local Fuel Fund Over the past few months, the Salem Rotary Club has sponsored two dinners to benefit the Salem/Shushan Fuel Fund. The Fuel Fund was started three years ago to help Salem and Shushan residents to pay their heating bills in these difficult times. The Salem Rotary Club was behind the Fuel Fund right from the start and the Club helped raise the initial $3,000 to get it started. This 2011-2012 heating season has proved to be a challenge for the Fuel Fund. Many folks are still out of work and although the winter has been milder than last, the fuel prices are significantly higher. Also HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program) funding has been cut. The need for assistance with fuel bills has increased dramatically. The Fund expects requests of over $12,000 this heating season. Again the Salem Rotary Club stepped up. Salem Rotarians, with the help of local food producers, sponsored two benefit dinners, one on October 20 and the other on February 14. The dinners raised over $7,000 for the Salem/Shushan Fuel Fund. This may be enough to carry the Fund through the heating season. The Salem Rotary Club is at the heart of its community and the community appreciates its commitment.
