WHAT IS CHECK MYBARANGAY?

Check My Barangay is a participatory governanceinitiative focusing at the barangay level.

Participatory governance

"Participatory governance consists of state-sanctionedinstitutional processes that allow citizens to exercise voice andvote, which then results in the implementation of publicpolicies that produce some sort of changes in citizens’ lives"(Wampler and Mcnulty, 2011).

‘Participatory governance’ denotes forms of governance inwhich non-governmental actors (usually ‘citizens’) areempowered to use the resources of the State to make decisionsabout matters that directly concern them (Stewart, 2009).

This project is highlighted by a citizen monitoring componentallowing citizens to participate in validation processes of

implemented projects and programs.

As a follow-up to i-budget.mo,Check My Barangay seeks to

expand the scope of participatorygovernance at the barangay levelby allowing community members

to determine important andrelevant services which directly

addresses their needs.

In addition, the project seeks to empower thecommunity by providing mechanisms and avenuesfor participation with respect to the systemicdissemination of the project and program-relevantinformation in the barangay processes.

The main goal of Check My Barangay is to facilitatethe constructive engagement between the citizensand their barangay by capacitating the members ofthe barangay and its citizens, providing useful data forprojects and program development and advancingavailable modes or platforms for participation andinformation dissemination for the community.

Check My barangay will be using an online-offlineapproach for each of its tools in engaging thecommunities for participatory governance.
