Confirmation is complicated, at least in its history. It arose in response to real problems deeply felt, not the least of which was the desire of the bishop to minister to all who were baptized. But it also has to do with the early crisis of how to deal with persons baptized by congregations that had broken bonds with the greater church: heretics. People reasoned that no matter how wrongheaded the minister might be, Christ would always work in the waters of baptism. No matter what, God would sweep aside all human obstacles to claim the new life in the water. They were not so sure about the ability of someone who had broken with the church to confer the Spirit. By the fifth century, already-baptized persons coming into the church were anointed with chrism but not rebap-tized. This anointing with myron or chrism was seen as an act of reconciliation by the church, and a seal upon the commitments vowed by the newcomer. To-day, we preserve this ancient practice by never “rebaptizing” Christians who have been baptized in water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We affirm the candidates’ baptismal dignity, and we celebrate confirmation at their first reception of the Eucharist. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SCHEDULING USE OF OLGC FACILITIES IMPORTANT!!!
ANY SCHEDULING FOR USE OF PARISH FA-CILITIES MUST GO THROUGH ELEANOR
LEVY. YOU CAN SEE HER IN THE RECTORY DURING REGULAR DAYTIME
OFFICE HOURS. YOU CAN ALSO CALL HER AT 516-239-0953. NOTHING WILL BE CONFIRMED
UNLESS IT GOES THROUGH ELEANOR. THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING.
As you are aware there was severe storm dam-age in the Adoration Chapel of Saint Joseph's Church. This caused Eucharistic Adoration to
be suspended until further notice. We have dealt with Insurance Companies, and compa-nies that can assist in the repairing of water
soaked walls and ceilings.
Work has finally begun on the cause of the problems, and the repair of the damage. This
will take some time, and continued under-standing on your part. Completion of this pro-
ject is still a few weeks away, I apologize for any inconvenience. As always, thank you for
your understanding and support.
INDEPENDENCE DAY JULY 4TH

Some weeks ago Father John Hien moved from Saint Joseph’s Rectory to the Saint Pius X
Residence for Retired Priests provided by the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Father John and I
came to this difficult decision after consideration of his health. Taking into account what the Residence had to offer him, that continued living in the rectory
could not, we felt this was a good safe move for him. Father and I have been in ministry together for
the last 15 years. As a friend and colleague I wanted to make sure this was the right move for
him, and I truly believe it is. Since his move I have been told by the staff at the Residence that Father is doing wonderfully, taking in all that is being offered to him. His new address:
Father John Hien: 565 Albany Avenue
Amityville, New York 11701
We wish Father all God’s continued blessings upon him in his new home.
Ad Multos Annos!

In 1925, Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King in his encyclical letter Quas Primas, in re-sponse to growing nationalism and secularism around the world. He had the foresight to realize that secular-ism could soon wage awful wars against the Church. During the early twentieth century, in Mexico, Russia, and in many parts of Europe, atheistic re-gimes threatened not just the Catholic Church and its faithful but civilization itself. Pope Pius XI’s encyclical gave Catholics hope and—while governments of men around them crumbled—the assurance that Christ the King shall reign forever. Pope Pius XI said that Christ “reign[s] ‘in the hearts of men,’ both by reason of the keenness of his intellect and the extent of his knowledge, and also because he is very truth, and it is from him that truth must be obediently received by all mankind.” While we hope and pray that the dark times of almost a century ago remain in the past, a troubling recent Pew Forum report shows that religious intolerance is on the rise worldwide, including in the United States. Therefore, we must remain vigilant when our first American freedom protected under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is threatened. Religious liberty gives us the ability not just to worship at Mass but the freedom to feed the hungry, serve the needy, and tend to the sick. During this time when we come together as a nation in thanksgiving for our many blessings, let us thank God for the gift of religious liberty and ask that it not be taken for granted. Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome— for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us— this great land will always be “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

SETTING ASIDE THE WEAPONS OF WAR Why, we might ask the prophet Zechariah to-day, would God want to banish chariots and horses? The answer follows: because they are used to violate God’s reign of peace, along with the warri-or’s bow. In the days of Zechariah, chariots and horses were high-priced items used on-ly for war-making. They were the aircraft carriers and nuclear missiles of his day. And for his culture, which thought of any king as being a military leader first and foremost, a king riding on a lowly beast of burden to proclaim peace without horses, chariots, and bows would have set his lis-teners topsy-turvy. This lowly, beast-riding king of peace, we be-lieve, was fulfilled in Jesus, gentle and humble of heart. In a world torn by military strife often generated by differing religious views, and even in our own lives and homes where we are often at “war” over the tini-est things, we would do well to stop and consider to what degree we are willing to be like that “king” whose way of gentleness and humility is the way for us to find rest for our weary souls.
