It was originally commissioned by the 12th Century Khmer King Jayavarman VII (AD 1181-1219) in honor of four army generals and his son, the Crown Prince Indravarman. The temple complex, along with its moat, its reservoir (baray) and its extended unspoilt environment constitutes a unique archaeological site vital to Cambodia’s cultural heritage. For this reason it is now one of Cambodia’s top-listed sites for inscription to UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Perhaps the most significant feature of the large temple complex is the extensive carved bas-relief walls located in the outer vaulted gallery which, if put end to end, would stretch nearly one kilometer (see background image). They reveal a window into the history of the Ancient Khmer and depict royal processions and battles with the Chams including large images of a multi-armed Avalokiteshvara. These reliefs, threatened by neglect, structural collapse and looting, are now the subject of a Global Heritage Fund (GHF)-led two-year program to test materials, develop methods and train a local team to carry out the conservation of these priceless sandstone reliefs. GHF’s other conservation and development goals at Banteay Chhmar include: Master Conservation Planning and Expanded Site Protection Stabilization of the Central Temple Complex Community Tourism Development, Training and Stewardship Assistance to the Cambodian government in the UNESCO World Heritage Site nomination and inscription process There are many traditional festivals that are held in Cambodia throughout the year. Here are a few that are practiced in Banteay Chhmar: Makha Buchea Day: (07 February 2012), in Khmer (15 Ket Khe Makha). This festival is a reminder that the Buddha once predicted his death within 3 months. People bring incense and candles to invite monks to pagodas for overnight prayer. Visakha Buchea Day: (05 May 2012), In Khmer (15 Ket Khe Visakha). Prayer and song for Buddha to acheive enlightenment before his death, performed all night by monks in the pagoda. Khmer New Year: (13-14-15 April 2012) held 3 days each year. Celebration welcoming the year’s new god. Houses are cleaned and a special place is dedicated to the God with fruits, flowers, candles, incense, and drinks. People celebrate at ancient temples throughout Cambodia, and Banteay Chhmar welcomes many visitors during this festival. Pras Vor Sa: (Beginning 03 August 2012, End 14 October 2012), In Khmer (Beginning 15 Ket, Khe Asart & end 15 Ket, Khe Asouch). Once a year, monks retreat to pagoda for prayer during the entirety of the rainy season. Phchum Ben Festival: (14-15-16 October 2012), In Khmer (14 -15 Rouch Khe Peak Tabot and 1 Rouch Khe Asouch). Buddhist festival dedicated to recently deceased ancestors. Families provide them with food for the journey to heaven. Banteay Chhmar Pr. Chinchem Trey Pr. Yeay Pom Pr. Samnang Tasok Pr. Ta Nem Pr. Villagers donate materials to monks for pagoda improvement. Water Festival Day: (27-28-29 November 2012), In Khmer (13-14-15 Ket, Khe KarDek). This festival is dedicated to the Khmer Army, especially the Water Forces that successfully fought back enemy troops in historic battles. In Banteay Chhmar, the festival is held in the moat around the temple complex, where at least 18 teams race over a distance of 400 m with small boats of 5 to 7 oarsmen. CBT supports the festival by using portions of the local fund for the first three prizes as well as by managing the festival preparation activities. Improving Village Festival or Bun Phoum: (Local Banteay Chhmar festival that villagers usually initiate during the last week of March and the first week in April). Villagers share their properties and improve the village Chief’s house, in order to give thanks to the God who protects the village for the next year. Bon Choul Ruok Festival: (Year-round). When villagers get ill, they consult a female elder of the village to seek out the reason for sickness and prepare food and items for a cure. The second step is to see a doctor in the health center. Require Rain Festival or Bun Som Tek Plieng: (This is a local festival, normally undertaken in June - July at the start of the rainy season). If no rain occurs, villagers ask monks and elders to pray in Temple to bring the rain.
