Our thoughts led to prayers, and we agreed to a three-legged look at what we need to work on. Preliminary ideas organize this way: 1. Developing a ministry direction and plans. Some things are obviously going to continue much as they are at Prince of Peace, as we are a traditional congregation with wonderful people involved in worship, regular ministries, pastoral care, etc. We’re not going to let that go. We are also a congregation in a community of diverse cultures and new possibilities which we will either partner with (exciting ministry) or try to avoid (dying ministry). We have wonderful neighbors with whom we have shared ministry for years. Being a good neighbor is in Jesus’ Great Commission to us, and it is printed on the cover of every bulletin and Banner we put together. We have Pastor Sam, who has experience and training in many of the possibilities awaiting us, with youth, worshiping groups, and pastoral care. Developing a ministry direction and plans. HUGE for Prince of Peace. 2. Stewardship. All of us supporting the ministries of Prince of Peace with our financial gifts and other time and talents is essential. Every person needs to give generously. People who give are the people who will smile, who love life, who sleep well at night. And the ministry that happens when people give is ministry that will grow and be successful in all the right ways. People need to give for their own sake. People need to give for the world’s sake, in Christ. Stewardship is HUGE for Prince of Peace. 3. Using our resources. Our congregation has avoided some common pitfalls, such as debt, run down facilities, blah reputation as a good neighbor, and lack of spiritual energy. We’re really fortunate. An additional plus we have is a fair amount of land with which we may be able to do good things for the good news and for God’s people. Much caring energy has gone into possible ways to use some of this land recently, the most talked about possibility being to let it be used to put up supportive permanent housing for our crowded community. (That is still being considered, waiting now for further feasibility information, and knowing time realities put the project some years away). Whatever we end up doing with this super resource, we would be lacking to just let it go to waste. It can be part of our ministry of being a good neighbor. And it can also play a major role helping fund the ministries we are developing (see leg # 1). These are unfinished thoughts, but I believe them to be a wonderful launching platform. You are needed to take part with all three legs. Get that? All three parts need you. Let’s do this. Pastor Tollefson Banner February 2020 Prince of Peace Lutheran Church

THE FUTURE AWAITS

Prince of Peace is one of God’s congregations, which are

located all over the world. We are gifted with resources

like no one else’s and called to care for our neighbors, near

and far, with God’s grace and love.

So, what specifically are we called to do?

We should and are constantly considering what shape and

direction our ministry takes, and right now we need to

take an extra look. Across the country Christian churches

are finding it really difficult to be significant as a presence

of God in their communities. It’s a tough world out there.

We, also, are seeing bigger challenges to face with

seemingly fewer people and tools to do the tasks. Our

December 2019 council meeting focused on this need. Our

thoughts led to prayers, and we agreed to a three-legged

look at what we need to work on. Preliminary ideas

organize this way:

1. Developing a ministry direction and plans. Some

things are obviously going to continue much as they

are at Prince of Peace, as we are a traditional

congregation with wonderful people involved in

worship, regular ministries, pastoral care, etc. We’re

not going to let that go. We are also a congregation in

a community of diverse cultures and new possibilities

which we will either partner with (exciting ministry)

or try to avoid (dying ministry). We have wonderful

neighbors with whom we have shared ministry for

years. Being a good neighbor is in Jesus’ Great

Commission to us, and it is printed on the cover of

every bulletin and Banner we put together. We have

Pastor Sam, who has experience and training in many

of the possibilities awaiting us, with youth, worshiping

groups, and pastoral care. Developing a ministry

direction and plans. HUGE for Prince of Peace.

2. Stewardship. All of us supporting the ministries of

Prince of Peace with our financial gifts and other time

and talents is essential. Every person needs to give

generously. People who give are the people who will

smile, who love life, who sleep well at night. And the

ministry that happens when people give is ministry

that will grow and be successful in all the right ways.

People need to give for their own sake. People need to

give for the world’s sake, in Christ. Stewardship is

HUGE for Prince of Peace.

3. Using our resources. Our congregation has avoided

some common pitfalls, such as debt, run down

facilities, blah reputation as a good neighbor, and lack

of spiritual energy. We’re really fortunate. An

additional plus we have is a fair amount of land with

which we may be able to do good things for the good

news and for God’s people. Much caring energy has

gone into possible ways to use some of this land

recently, the most talked about possibility being to let

it be used to put up supportive permanent housing for

our crowded community. (That is still being

considered, waiting now for further feasibility

information, and knowing time realities put the project

some years away). Whatever we end up doing with

this super resource, we would be lacking to just let it

go to waste. It can be part of our ministry of being a

good neighbor. And it can also play a major role

helping fund the ministries we are developing

(see leg # 1).

These are unfinished thoughts, but I

believe them to be a wonderful launching

platform. You are needed to take part

with all three legs. Get that? All three

parts need you.

Let’s do this. Pastor Tollefson

thermostat in Deborah’s office because that’s broken.

As we work to save some dimes and quarters here and

there by taking care of things ourselves instead of

calling a professional (or maybe you are a professional

PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH

CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING

December 11, 2019 Meeting called to order at 6:04 p.m.

MEMBERS PRESENT: Dave Hill, President;

Pastor Conrad Tollefson; Pam Randall, Secretary;

Melodie Schneider; Nancy Hadley; Susan Vernon;

Jude Gustafson. Mark Bergin joined the meeting

after endowment committee adjourned.

DEVOTION and COMMUNION: Thoughts on

recent memorial services (four in total – very

different situations). Concept of family – congrega-

tion is an organization with business to do, and

hopefully also is a family of people surrounding each

other, lifting each other up, supporting one another.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes from October

18, 2019, council meeting, November 3, 2019,

congregation meeting, and November 12, 2019,

council meeting all reviewed. Moved by Dave Hill,

seconded by Susan Vernon, unanimously approved to

accept the minutes from all three meetings.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Shared by Dave in

Mark’s absence; giving has been pretty good,

expenses are up a little bit, and last week giving was

very generous.

PASTOR’S REPORT: Conrad: Regarding

resignation of William Tollefson as Music Director

due to full-time employment in Bellevue, a search is

beginning in earnest to find a new Music Director.

Regarding the youth program, Sam is very excited

Page 4: Banner Prince of Peace Lutheran Church · lively discussion and tasty treats all facilitated by Eileen Severns. The bookmark with all of 2020’s books (see below) is available on

The Publication of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Banner February 2020 19030 8th Ave S, SeaTac 98148 4 Volume 29 Issue 2

about the growing numbers of youth as Christy

Hyler becomes more comfortable in her role as

Youth Leader and they are beginning preparation for

the next youth mission trip. At the end of Pastor’s

report Dave asked if we could begin planning to

celebrate William’s work at POP as he will be Music

Director through Christmas.

WELCA: Melodie: Today’s meeting was canceled

due to conflicts in scheduling and other events here

at POP (memorial service). Not a lot of quilting has

been done recently, but additional fabric has been

donated by Denise Reinke and plans for completing

more quilts will begin in the new year.

OTHER: Four memorial services recently, Michele

White, Klara Dunn, Ruth Beckstrom, and AJ Wilder,

a 24-year-old young man who died in a motor vehicle

accident on 8th Avenue recently.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE UPDATE: Nancy

Hadley will serve as member at large for three more

years. President and vice president positions remain

open.

HOUSING ALLOWANCE: To comply with

Federal tax guidelines, it was moved by Jude

Gustafson and seconded by Melodie Schneider, then

unanimously approved to declare the amount of pay

that is taxed as housing allowance for 2020 to be

44,258.00.

FINANCE COMMITTEE: Discussion of the 2020

budget was tabled due to absent members.

LAND USE PLANNING UPDATE: Dave Hill:

Met with Christopher Ross, the new Director of

Compass Housing, regarding our interest in doing

something with the vacant property east of the

buildings. If we put a facility on this property, it

could be a $25 million project. Typically, the land is

secured by the agency leading the project and then

investors for the project are sought. Currently there

are a lot of projects in the pipeline for Compass and

other agencies. There is a scoring process that

happens; location, access to services, type of tenant,

etc. It could take up to eight years before residents

would be able to move in. Mr. Ross stated he would

like to have some of the people who we have met

with in the past come out and give a frank

assessment/report on the feasibility of a project with

Compass. Another option could be selling the land

for commercial use and utilizing some or all of the

funds for affordable housing at another location.

STEWARDSHIP: Dave: What can we do? We

must look at enhancing our stewardship in order to

remain viable.

ENHANCING PASTORAL MINISTRIES: Dave:

We are on a hard deadline with Sam in terms of

timing to graduation and where he will end up. Do

we have an idea that he will remain with POP?

Dave summarized that the congregation will need to

understand that we have some financial challenges in

the near future, including pastoral leadership, music

leadership, and choices regarding utilization of our

assets.

Pastor Conrad shared regarding Sam’s progress with

the TAME program and Sam’s goals as he completes

his studies and becomes ordained in the ELCA. As

Pastor Conrad nears retirement and as Sam becomes

ordained, POP has an opportunity to either age out

and close or go in a new direction.

Mark added that timing is crucial on the situation

with Sam and future projects at POP as we head into

2020 and further explained how monies earmarked

for Sam’s education are running out and that we need

to set aside and plan for his call if that is something

the congregation wants to do. For the congregation

this could mean $500 in additional giving per week.

Further discussion ensued among council members

regarding teams researching each of the three main

topics (stewardship, enhanced pastoral ministries,

and land use/asset management) and how they

would interact and how they are intertwined.

Dave suggested that we handle the enhanced

pastoral ministries piece first to consider a call for

Sam and then look at the stewardship and then the

land use/asset management.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, January 21, 2020,

at 6:30 p.m. Meeting adjourned at 7:40 p.m.

HOSPITALITY HOUSE

HOSPITALITY HOUSE EVENING MEALS

TUESDAY, MARCH 3—SUNDAY, MARCH 8

HOME, HEALTH, HOPE

These three wonderful words represent Hospitality

House for the unhoused residents. A big part of

“Home” is the home-cooked meals the supporting

churches provide. Tuesday, April 3, the shelter’s

evening meal is provided by PoP’s monthly

Community Meal. What a great beginning for “our”

week of meals—the rest of the week depends on our

super “meal volunteers.”

The meal provider list is on the HH bulletin board—

waiting for five names to appear. Thank you—thank

you...for your caring hearts.

HOSPITALITY HOUSE Spring Fling

Attend the House’s biggest fundraiser of the year,

Saturday, March 7, at St. Francis of Assisi Church

Unity Hall, 15226 21st Ave SW, Burien; doors open

at 6:15 p.m.

Hospitality House is celebrating 20 YEARS of

serving unhoused women in South King County—

money raised at the Spring Fling contributes to the

shelter’s financial needs. Enjoy a full evening—

scrumptious buffet dinner prepared and served by the

Puget Sound Skills Center, staff and graduate stories,

live and silent auction items, raffle, (a favorite) the

wild dessert dash, and more! Last year’s enjoyable,

professional auctioneer returns to conduct the

auction. Spring Fling tickets are $50 per person—

they can be paid by check or purchased online at HH’s

website. Do you have anything you can donate? No

item is too small. Let’s continue the good PoP

attendance at this worthwhile event.

FROM THE BISHOP

GRACE GRANTS From the February edition of

The Spirit

I am excited to announce that

the application process for

Northwest Washington Synod

Grace Grants is open. Thanks to the vision and

desire for continued ministry, Grace Lutheran,

Bellevue, gave the synod council a percentage of their

proceeds when they closed their ministry. The synod

council, in turn, wants to invest this money in

congregations and ministry sites who are doing

faithful innovation. In that spirit, Grace Grants were

born.

For each of the next three years, $100,000 will be

made available for congregations and ministry sites to

apply for Grace Grants. If other congregations,

institutions or individuals would like to contribute to

this fund, the synod council will continue Grace

grants beyond these initial three years.

Congregations and ministry sites are welcome to

apply for grants ranging from $2,000 to $20,000. The

council welcomes all applications. In particular, the

Grace Grant Committee and synod council are

looking for congregations who are faithfully looking

into the future, trusting God, and seeing new

possibilities in sharing the story of Jesus.

As you consider these grants, these questions might

help you discern what God is up to in your area of the

synod:

• What is happening in your church’s

neighborhood? Where do you see possibilities for

partnership or collaboration?

• What is our unique ELCA identity and witness?

• Are there avenues to talk with and listen to those

outside the walls of the church?

• How can we equip disciples and our own

community of faith?

• How can we foster a spirit of connection across

the synod?

Page 6: Banner Prince of Peace Lutheran Church · lively discussion and tasty treats all facilitated by Eileen Severns. The bookmark with all of 2020’s books (see below) is available on

The Publication of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Banner February 2020 19030 8th Ave S, SeaTac 98148 6 Volume 29 Issue 2

• What are the resources needed to develop new

leaders?

• How can we partner with young adults, listening

and collaborating?

• Where are the places we can be more eco-friendly

in our church buildings?

• Who are those marginalized?

• Who are those discriminated against?

Of course, there are other areas to consider for

ministry through these Grace Grants. These are just

a few ideas that might help.

As you prepare, here are some important dates:

• February 1 - Grant Application Period open, find

form on synod website.

• May 1 - Applications due. No late applications

will be accepted.

• May - Grant committee review will take place.

• June 5 - Final approval of Grants by Synod

Council.

• June 6 - Notification of grants awarded at Synod

Assembly.

• July 1 - Grants to be funded.

Grants need to be used between July 1, 2020, and

April 1, 2021. Grants are potentially renewable.

I hope you find this opportunity as exciting as the

Northwest Washington Synod Council. We are

excited to continue vitalizing our congregations and

ministry sites into the future – as we trust God is

walking with us, leading us and guiding us.

Grace & Peace, Bishop Shelley Bryan Wee

BIRTHDAYS!

At 16 I’ll be 4 years old; at 20 I’ll be 5. Today’s my

birthday, can you tell how long I’ve been alive?

When I was 4, you called me 1; I was 8 at 2. So when

you ask how old I am, I don’t know what to do.

Would you like a cupcake? Today I’m turning 3. It’s

February 29, how old must I be?. Say happy birthday

finally getting a birthday this year.

WOMEN OF PRINCE OF PEACE

In January, We Are Called

took us to people in the Old

Testament that were called

in unique ways to do

unique things for God.

This month the study will

be about the calling of the Twelve and the call of Paul

(Saul). Although these are familiar accounts to most

of us, there will be some concepts that are applicable

to our lives. That isn’t really a surprise!! There is

always something to learn when we look at Scripture

through “four lenses” as outlined in the ELCA’s Book

of Faith: The historical lens, the literary lens, the

theological lens, and the devotional lens. Page 30 in

the January/February Gather magazine explains these

approaches. The Holy Spirit works through Scripture

in unique ways for all us.

Circles will meet the week of February 17. JOY

Circle will meet on Tuesday, February 18, at 6:30

p.m.; FAITH Circle will meet on Thursday,

February 19, at 10:00 a.m. Circles meet in the church

library.

LOVE PROJECT for February is soup for the food

bank. We are calling in “Souper Bowl Month.”

QUILTERS meet each Thursday at 9:00 a.m. in the

Education Building to sew quilts for Lutheran World

Relief. There is a variety of things to do...cutting,

sewing, tying, binding. Join the quilting crew and see

what you are CALLED to do.

SAVE THE DATE...July 16-19...The Triennial

Convention to the Women of the ELCA will take

place in Phoenix July 14-16, 2020. There are a few of

us that are interested in attending. Give it prayerful

consideration. These events really are inspirational

and life-changing.

ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL

MEETING

The annual Congregational Meeting is scheduled for

Sunday, February 9. The meeting will take place

directly following the 10:00 a.m. worship service. It

will be a time to gather and (in the presence of God

and our church family) be informed by our Church

Council members about the work they have done in

the last year and the work they hope to do in the

coming year. It is a chance to hear and be heard. We

hope you can make it.

BLOODWORKS

BLOOD DRIVE

FEBRUARY 10

Come out on Monday, February 10, if you’re able to

donate blood or platelets. The drive is open from

12:30-6:30 p.m. with a break from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

Blood donations only take about an hour while

platelet donations take about two hours. The globe is

experiencing a blood/platelet shortage, so please

think about donating if you can. You can potentially

save three lives with this generous gift (that your

body just makes naturally).

RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED

SAFETY IN A

PLACE OF

WORSHIP RECAP

Thanks to our Safety

Committee for putting the

January 25 event together in

cooperation with the Des Moines

Police Department. It was well attended with over 50

participants (at least half were PoP Church members).

The always delightful Officer Tonya Seaberry brought this

demonstration on what to do in case your safety is in

question while you’re attending church services with

several scenarios and solutions (I even heard that

attendees got to see a police officer tackled by a civilian;

impressive...and encouraged by the officer!)

Thanks to all who attended. In these times that we’re

living, it’s important to always be alert to possible danger

wherever you are and having this information as a good

addition to our “toolbox.” Thanks again, Safety

Committee Members and Des Moines PD!

OUR VISION: PRINCE OF PEACE, INSPIRED BY GOD’S GREAT

COMMISSION, WILL BE A NEIGHBOR AMONG ALL NEIGHBORS.
