Fun Run

Thank you to Mr Formica and the PDHPE Team for organising a very successful fun run held last Thursday 14 September in our extensive school grounds. Our students all appeared to have a great time. Thank you also to our P&C parents/carers Mrs Nurisen Hashmi, Mrs Ayse Pilavci and her mother Mrs Tuncay Pilavci, Mrs Cassandra Zakaria, Ms Rebecca Crealy-Nyboer, Mrs Maryam Shackleton, Layla and Amin Zakaouri for providing a sausage and kebab sizzle which raised $982.80.

Parent Workshop – STEM

Thank you to those parents who attended our Parent STEM Workshop last Wednesday afternoon. And a big thank you to our school future focused learning team for making it happen. Many of the parents I spoke to found the workshop extremely useful in providing them with a better understanding of what their child is learning at school. Parents unable to attend are most welcome to observe their children participating in a STEM lesson in their classroom. If you would like more information, or require further assistance with the information presented, please do not hesitate to make a time to see your child’s class teacher. At the conclusion of the workshop, parents who attended were eligible to win one of two $50 vouchers kindly donated by Bankstown Sports Club. The lucky winners were:

Electronic Driveway Gates

Thanks to the generosity of the State Sport Unit for providing funding, we will soon be having electronic driveway gates installed at the main entrance to the staff carpark. Only personnel permitted onto the school’s premises will be provided with a code to enter the school grounds. This will also enhance the safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and school community. It is hopeful that the work will be completed during the forthcoming school holiday period.

Kindergarten Transition and Enrolments

To make starting school an easy and enjoyable experience for you and your child, we have organised a transition program to take place next term. Our Kindergarten 2018 Transition dates are:

Cyberbullying

A reminder to all our parents and caregivers that it is strongly recommended that children under the age of 13 should NOT be using social media sites of any kind. By doing so, children run the risk of cyberbullying and are generally not mature enough to be able to deal with

cyberbullies or run the risk of implicating themselves by responding inappropriately to the perpetrator.

Cyberbullying is commonly defined as the use of information and communication technologies to support repeated and deliberate hostile behaviour intended to harm others. It is sometimes used as an extension to other forms of bullying and can result in the target of bullying experiencing social, psychological and academic difficulties. (ACMA).

How Common Is It? “We know that 50 per cent of [United States] children report they were cyberbullied. In Australia it’s 10 per cent and that’s tracking up two to three per cent every year.” (Prof Donna Cross 2009).

Effects Of Bullying Behaviour Research indicates that students who are bullied are more likely than students who are not bullied to experience impaired social and emotional adjustment, poor academic achievement, anxiety, depression, poorer physical health, higher absenteeism, increased loneliness and low self-esteem.

Research also shows that students repeatedly bullying others were likely to have the same symptoms as the students experiencing the abuse.

The students bullying were just as likely to have elevated levels of anxiety, to be disconnected from school and to have higher levels of depression as the students who were being bullied. (Prof Donna Cross)

Bystander Behaviour Matters Most bullying takes place when bystanders are present, although most bystanders do not act to discourage it. When a bystander does act there is a good chance (around 50%) that the bullying will stop. Students who are ‘defended’ are better adjusted and report less peer victimisation one year later. Reconciliation is more likely when bystanders intervene than when teachers intervene. The majority of peer interventions are effective.

Is it a school responsibility? The Student Discipline in Government Schools Policy makes plain “the school discipline policy may apply outside of school hours and off school premises where there is a clear and close connection between the school and the conduct of students”.

The Suspension and Expulsion of School Students – Procedures provides that behaviour that may warrant suspension includes “hostile behaviour directed towards students, members of staff or other persons including verbal abuse and abuse transmitted electronically such as by email or SMS text message”.

Addressing cyberbullying is a whole-of-community responsibility, and requires a whole-of-community response.

Regional Spelling Bee

Planning for 2018

To assist us in planning for 2018 could you please notify the front office if your child will not be returning to Bankstown North Public School next year or if they will be away on holidays for the beginning of the school year (Tuesday 30 January 2018).

This does not include Year 6 students going to high school next year.

Speech Therapist Tips

By school age (Kindergarten) children should:

Be understood close to 100% of the time. They may have some minor speech errors (e.g producing ‘r’ or ‘th’ incorrectly).

Follow three part instructions (e.g. put your hat in your bag, then your lunch box and stand by the door).

Use sentences with ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘because’ (e.g. I am tired because I went to sleep late).

Use most grammatical structures correctly – still may have difficulties with irregular past tense, irregular plurals etc (e.g. I goed to the shops).

IMPORTANT: If a child speaks two languages at home, this would apply to their primary language (ie: the one learnt first/spoken most). If your child is not able to do some of these things you should:

See your GP to get information.

Search for a local speech pathologist in your area on the Speech Pathology Australia website www.speechpathologyaustralia.org.au.

School Holiday Road Safety Reminder

for Families

With the school holidays approaching, daily routines will soon change. Different play locations and holiday destinations means different traffic environments. So to help keep our children safe, families are reminded about these key road safety points:

Stop, look, listen, think every time you cross the road. If your child is aged 8 years or younger hold their hand when walking near or across roads. If your child is 9-10 years old always actively supervise them.

It’s the law that everyone wears a helmet when riding a bike in a public place. It makes sense to wear a helmet when riding scooters and skateboards too!

Click clack front ‘n back every person for every trip. Everyone in the car must be securely buckled up in the right seatbelt or child restraint.

Talk to your child about being a safe road user. Reinforce safe road behaviours by being a good role model! Children learn safe road behaviours from the adults who care for them. Talk about what you are doing to be safe when near roads, in the car and when riding.

Point out road safety differences and dangers in new environments. This is especially important when on holidays in different surroundings. Roads, footpaths, parks, carparks, bike tracks and bike lanes may look different in holiday areas.

The best way to keep your child safe is to actively supervise them.

Talk and teach your child about road safety every time you are out and about.

Remind other adults who care for your children to do this too.

Lateness

Please be aware that there are still a number of students arriving late for school each day. If your child is not at morning lines by the time teachers have finished their announcements, they will be considered as officially late for school and the roll marked accordingly. If your child arrives after morning lines they are to go straight to the school office and are to provide the office staff with a satisfactory explanation to receive a late note.

Teachers will not be accepting any child into the classroom after morning lines that do not have a valid late note.

If your child continues to be late for school, the matter will be reported to the Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO) and a letter sent home requesting a meeting with you. It is your responsibility to ensure that your child arrives on time for school each and every day the school is opened.

Regional Spelling Bee

The Regional Finals of the Premier’s Spelling Bee was held on Friday 8 September at Greenacre Public School. I had the great pleasure of accompanying our four school finalists - David L, Alisha N, David N and Rudy P on the day and was very proud of their efforts and achievements. In particular, I would like to commend David for his out-standing performance by reaching round 7 and Alisha round 6 of the Junior competition. What a fantastic result! Positive Behaviour For Learning

(PBL)

At Bankstown North Public School,

we choose to be safe learners

As of the beginning of this term, Bankstown North Public School has undertaken the

Positive Behaviour for Learning program as the major focus of the school’s Wellbeing

component.

As part of the program the children are rewarded for Making Good Choices, Being

Safe and Being Learners by receiving a ‘Crikey’ – a yellow slip of paper that the child

receives from teachers when they are seen to be following our school expectations.

The children then place these into a barrel and enter the weekly ‘Crikey Raffle’. The

more ‘Crikeys’ a child receives in a week; the greater chance they have of winning

the raffle.

The ‘Crikey’ Raffle takes place at the Friday morning assembly with winners winning a

$2 canteen voucher and a letter home from Mr Godwin.

Nan Tien Temple

On Wednesday the 6th of September, 59 students from Stage 2 visited the Nan Tien Temple. We had to be at school at 7.45am and then we got on the double decker bus. On the way to the temple,

we stopped at Sublime Point for recess. We got back on the bus and headed to the temple.

The first activity we did was Tai Chi. Next we went on a tour of the temple and climbed a steep hill to

ring the gratitude bell. Everyone was very hungry so we stopped for lunch. For lunch we had fried rice and potato wedges and I rated the food 10 out of 10! After lunch we did calligraphy which is a type of ancient Chinese writing. We were very tired after a big day at the Nan Tien Temple and it

was time to go back to school. Throughout the day, we learnt a lot about how places are similar and different which we have been learning about in Geography. It was a great excursion!

L I G H T S , C A M E R A , A C T I O N Bankstown North Public School Choir performed in the long running Gillawarna Festival

of Performing Arts at Bankstown Sports Club. The festival allows students to experience

the atmosphere, sound and thrill of a real theatre performance. It provides students with

the opportunity to develop their confidence and self-esteem. Our dedicated choir

walked down to the club for two, day-time matinee performances last Tuesday and

Wednesday and backed up in the night-time to join 400 students from 14 schools to

perform in front of packed audiences.

Our choir have been working very hard all year rehearsing for these performances and

they sang great, always watching the Musical Director, Stephanie Bremner. I was very

proud of them all. Many lunch times these students practised their songs and I thank

them and Miss Bouabdullah for helping them learn these fabulous songs.

Also, our students who are members of the Bankstown North Public School Drama and

Dance clubs had a fabulous opportunity to watch the festival and wow did they have a

great time. Thanks to Mrs Ricchiuti and Mr Leedow for taking them to the Bankstown

Sports Club to witness and experience such a great concert. I hope these students get

inspired for their own routines in the future. Mrs Tran also helped out on the nights making

sure parents and guests were seated in their correct seats. Thanks heaps from all the

students and parents.

The Choir is looking forward to performing some of these fun songs in the future at Grand

Parents Day and other assemblies. If your child is interested in joining the choir please

encourage them to speak to me. We would love to grow the numbers as a few

students have moved schools and I welcome students who love singing and

would like to learn in a fun way.

PARENT WORKSHOP

Parents were invited to a workshop to get a hands-on-experience

of what their children learn in a

STEM lesson.

The Fun Run was a great success! I would like to thank the P&C for the great lunch they provided, I know the children (and teachers) appreciated it. It was a great day and the students had a

lot of fun. Mr Formica Here is a few recounts of the day…

On Thursday we had a fun run. We couldn’t go to Graff Park because it had some changes, so we had to do our fun run at school. We had lots of fun things. My favourite part was when we were running. My least favourite part was when we were throwing the ball. – By Arya K/1 Red.

On Thursday it was the fun run. There were so many activities. We walked one lap of the school then ran 7 laps. It made my bones hurt a lot but I also did an obstacle course, it was so fun. By Wadha K/1 Red On Thursday our school had the fun run. My favourite part was when I fell off the hill and rolled like a ball. I ran 12 laps around the school, well my friend Adam M from 1 Blue ran 16 laps! Can you believe it? Last Thursday we had our school FUN RUN, which went TERRIFIC! We had 10 activities to do, my

favourite was the obstacle course. We also had the wonderful P&C made chicken kebab rolls and

sausage sizzles for lunch. The activities we had were dancing, running, egg and spoon race, pac-man,

basketball and other fun activities. I would like to thank the P&C and the teachers for making our FUN

5/6 Yellow Class Chatter

Enjoying the activities at the Fun Run

5/6 Yellow have worked very hard creating and filming

their narratives. They produced six films to enter

Films by the Sea.

They had one of their films selected to be shown at Films by the Sea at Bankstown Sports Club on 27 October 2017. The selected film was produced by Ali, Noah and Melissa and stars

the whole class of 5/6 Yellow.

The class enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book characters for Book

Week, with many of our imaginative students creating their own

costumes.
