This enabled employees to view the latest internal communications from BOA, which at the time was highly advanced compared to other UK Businesses.

The Bank of America Chester campus has grown considerably over the years from 100

people back in 1993 to over 3500 today, and as a consequence Bank of America has

become the single largest employer in Cheshire.

As the UK Card Services operation underwent huge growth, their internal communications

and delivery of corporate messages became a high priority. As a consequence Bank of

America was an early adopter of electronic signage systems. In 1994 when BOA wanted to

deliver key information to employees and visitors throughout their different buildings (known

as Phases) that make up the vast Chester campus, they implemented their first pioneering

electronic signage system.

Bank of America’s first signage system used state of the art media converters from Pinnacle

and a varying array of equipment from Extron Electronics to allow VGA (640 X 480) signals

from a head end PC to be distributed over the banks fiber backbone. In each phase there

were a number of large NEC CRT monitors mounted in key locations.

This enabled employees to view the latest internal communications from BOA, which at the

time was highly advanced compared to other UK Businesses.

Following the development of Plasma display technology back in 1993 and subsequent

product release 1996, BOA was one of the first to install the then new jaw dropping 42”

Plasma displays from Fujitsu. Initially these where installed as a direct replacement for the

NEC CRT monitors. Various modifications were made to the system as the years went by to

improve reliability and image resolution and quality. At one stage PC’s were added to each

display and using a “virtual desktop” application which was loaded onto each PC resulting in

higher resolution images and greater reliability compared to the older media converter based

system. However this system could only display PC based content which over time became

a major limitation in the eyes of Bank of America Marketing Department who managed and

created the content for the signage system.

Bank of America’s marketers wanted the ability to be more creative, import video, show

higher resolution imagery, schedule events and have different screens showing different

content at different times. They instructed the in house Audio Visual & Multimedia services

team to give this high profile mission critical system a major overhaul and one that would

stand the test of time as their previous systems have to date. Carillion Communications,

one of Bank of America preferred Audio Visual and Video Conferencing Systems Integrators

who supplied and installed the first signage system, were commissioned to design and build

a new state of the art corporate signage system using products from dZine. Carillion, who

have worked with Bank of America for over 13 years, designed a tailored solution that would

meet and exceed the brief given by BOA’s Multi Media Services Team.

Matthew Tunstall, Vice President for Audio Visual & Multi Media Services EMEA, explained

“We chose to work with the team at Carillion because we felt that they had the vision,

expertise and experience to deliver a very flexible cost effective system which would meet

our digital media needs for now and well into the future. The dZine players perform a key

role in terms of the scheduling and delivery of our content and have already exceeded all our

expectations”.

The dZine DISplayers are specifically used for:

Receiving streamed video for Internal & External TV stations such as Sky news

BBC News 24 & Bank Of America’s internal business TV network “Knowledge

Channel”

Receiving streamed Video from Live Internal & External Videoconference calls.

Receiving streamed Video from DVD and auxiliary video sources.

Displaying Corporate Messaging & Content for Visitors and Bank Staff.

“A first live video streaming application for our media players within a secured

banking environment was achieved as a consequence of this project’, said Frederik

Vroman of dZine. This was the first time a third party encoder from Cabletime

was used to stream live video and audio to our displayers in a corporate real-time

application”

As part of Bank of America Climate Change policy and their ultimate goal of

working towards a low carbon future, Carillion where requested to seriously consider

the environmental impact of this new system. As a consequence Carillion made

recommendations to swap out all of the legacy PDP (Plasma Display) for more

efficient LCD equivalents. Carillion calculated that BOA’s existing Plasma displays

consumed an average of 4.3 amps per hour compared to the 1.25 amps of the new

LCD screens. Based on 8 hours a day, 7 days a week, this would equate to a saving

of 42,275 over 12 months. In financial terms based on 1kw = 10p, this represents a

significant cost saving of £4227.50p per annum.

Digital signage in a banking environment can be considered as one of the key

markets for Carillion and dZine. In the past, numerous customers like ABN AMRO,

KBC bank, SNS bank, UBS, SEB, Banco Santander, Attijariwafa bank, Commerzbank,

Piraeus Bank and many others chose dZine as the platform for their internal

promotional communication throughout their European branches. Within this banking

environment, dZine excels in providing a secure and reliable DS solution with an

open mind towards customised integrations.
