  • Come to Bangkok

    Bars

    Michael Moore

Although popular with visitors from abroad, wine has never really been a part of the local drinking and dining scene. But things have changed radically during the past two years. In spite of high taxes, wine has suddenly become popular with many Thais, especially among younger drinkers with a cosmopolitan outlook on life and older imbibers who have done a bit of traveling. The result has been an explosion in number of both wine bars and restaurants with wine bars attached. Here is a compendium of 15 places that we like, but please don't forget that this is just the starting point. There many more places you might want to visit and more are appearing all the time.4

Wine and Food Although most wine bars offer snacks and other food, the wine bars listed below give them equal importance. There are loads of places in this category, but here are six that seem to stand out from the crowd.

If you are tired of Bangkok's hustle and bustle, Aldo's is a perfect place to escape. Located on the 7 level of the Ascott Sathorn Bangkok, it is found adjacent to the building's swimming pool. There is a large copper-topped wine bar with tables surrounding it that invite relaxation and conversation. There is also a separate dining room and it is also possible to sit and drink outside by the pool. With a collection of over 120 different wines, it possesses one of the citys best collections of wine. The food is excellent and ranges from snacks to full lunches and dinners. It is easily reached from the Chong Nongsri BTS Station and if you drive, there is parking in the Ascott's lot.

  • In a city where bars and restaurants usually don't last long, Bacchus is a veteran so it must be doing something right. It consists of four floors, the first of which is devoted to drinkers, and wine lovers in particular. There

is a choice of more than 400 w ines and grea t f ood . Blessed with a subdued and sophisticated atmosphere it is a great place to bring a dinner date. The menu offers a mix of tapas and

Japanese , I ta l ian and Thai-influenced fusion dishes.

It is located on the right at you walk down Soi Ruamrudee

about 300 meters from the Ploenchit BTS Station; there is parking in the lot in front.

  • The brainchild of Roberto Ferin, an ex trover t chef f rom Milan, diVino is a small place wi th a massive collection of over 300 wines and some great Italian food. Casual and laidback, this an excellent spot to share wine and food with a group of friends. Roberto always has some sort of promotion. During our last visit, it was 'aperitivo time' with f ree tapas wi th dr inks f rom 5pm-8pm. Located opposite J Avenue in the heart of the Thonglor entertainment district, this is a great find for wine lovers. If you are opting for a full meal, a reservation is a good idea.

The Glass Wine Bar at Giusto features several wines by the glass plus an enormous selection of wines by the bottle. There are a variety of tapas-style items to graze. In addition everything on the restaurants regular menu is available for those seeking something more substantial. The setting is sleek and modern with seats at a bar and in an adjacent area that is also ideal for special events. The staff know their wine so don't hesitate to ask questions. There is plenty of on site parking and the restaurant is an easy walk from both the Sukhumvit MRT and Asoke BTS stations.

  • Opus Wine Bar64 Thanon Pan, between Sathorn and Silom

    www.wbopus.com; open daily 6pm(6.30 Sat)-midnight02-637-9899

If you are looking for class and elegance, this is where you will find it; chic and trendy atmosphere, excellent

service and food ranging from snacks to complete dinners. The drill here is to walk into the large

wine cellar; select a bottle of wine the majority of which are Italian - with the help of omnipresent manager Alex Morabito; and then order food to match the wine. Opus takes wine drinking in Bangkok to new heights and the food is superb. This is one of the best places in the city to take a special someone for wine and good food. There is supervised on site parking. If you are dining, a reservation is a good idea.

Casually elegant, this large place features wine at very reasonable prices and a good selection of international food, including pizza from a wood-fired oven. Located in what was once Contrazi's restaurant, Zaks has both indoor and outdoor dining. We enjoyed an excellent Cab from Chile at only B100 a glass, the staring price for wines at this inexpensive place. Most

wines by the bottle in the large international inventory range between B1000 and B4000 per bottle. Located on

restaurant rich Soi 11, Zaks is a capital place to begin (or finish) a night on the town. It is easily reached from

the Nana BTS Station and there is parking across the street at the Ambassador Hotel.

  • Hotel Wine Bars Wine bars are an appendage at many of the city's hotels. These places often have larger selections of wine than their standalone competitors as they can tap into the wine collection used by the hotel for their restaurants. They also tend to be a bit more formal with smart casual dress being the norm. Here are four places we find especially appealing.

Located on the lower level of the hotel; the wine and champagne bar area offers over 30 selections by the glass, starting with a reasonably priced selection of Chilean wines. Bar@494 is a hangout for business types and some of the citys beautiful people. It is one of the Bangkok's most popular wine bars and is often packed and noisy. If you tire of

wine, you can have a premium single malt whiskey at the whiskey lounge area. The largest selection of

Cuban cigars in town can be found at the nearby Divan@494.

  • th Located on the hotel's 37 floor and blessed with panoramic views of the city's skyline, this is definitely one of the classiest places in town to drink wine while enjoying a snack or meal. Reasonably priced wines by the glass are displayed on a chalkboard and there is a large menu of wines by the bottle starting at B750. We enjoyed a smashing Primo Estate

Shiraz 2007 from Australia for only B2100. The menu is inspired by Michelin

2-star Chef Manuel Martinez, owner of the Louis XIII restaurant in Paris. For those who love

the great outdoors, there is a large terrace overlooking Silom Road. The hotel is a short walk from the Chong Nongsri BTS Station.

A red wall, tile floor and loads of wine bottles produce a Spanish atmosphere at this compact venue. Food includes an appealing and oft changing selection of traditional Spanish tapas and some, with Asian overtones, that aren't so traditional. There are 16 wines available by the glass and over 120 different selections in bottles. Frequent promotions, including visiting chefs, add to the allure. The ambiance make this an ideal venue for those who want to add a little romance to their lives. The hotel is steps away from both the Sukhumvit MRT and Asoke BTS stations.

  • One of the premier places in town to nibble and drink; the French cheese, tapas, Italian cold cuts, salads and pasta are out of this world. The prices are reasonable and always net, without those nasty add-ons. The dimly lit atmosphere and wine bottles on the walls produce vibrations of a wine cellar, while the open kitchen tickles taste buds. Staff here works overtime at developing attractive and economical promotions. During out last visit, there were six wines from the pubs selection of 110 wines being featured at B170 per glass or B950 per bottle, with the selection being changed weekly. The hotel is only a short walk from the Phaya Thai BTS Station,

  • Young at Heart Enjoying wine doesn't need to take place in staid and formal surroundings. Here are five places where imbibers seen to have an especially good time. If you feel like you want to kick up your heels and have a good time, check one of them out.

Relaxed, casual and comfortable, this is a marvelous little place to enjoy a glass of wine and some basic snacks. Proprietor Victor Gomez, a Filipino-Thai, has a small collection of good wines at reasonable prices. During happy hours between 5 and 8pm, he offers a selection of wines at B99 and B149 per glass. During our last visit, he was featuring a Schild Barossa Shiraz, a wine that received a 94 from Wine Spectator, at only B1850 per bottle. Don't expect anything pretentious here, only the chance to enjoy good wine in comfortable surroundings. Just a short walk from the Ekkamai BTS Station, Sip is located opposite the Big C on Soi Ekkamai.

  • Over the years Tapas Cafe has drifted away from wine a bit and more to cocktails and beer, but it is still one of the best places in town to enjoy a glass of wine with friends, This is an authentic Spanish tapas cafe serving imaginative tapas and lots of good Spanish inspired food. There are several wines available by the glass and a larger selection available by the bottle. The atmosphere in this chic, but modest, place is always festive with everyone having a good time. It is very popular with local expats who enjoy a drink and a snack after a hard day in the office. It is a short walk from the Nana BTS station.

Always packed, but don't let this discourage you, it is worth the wait. There is a large selection of reasonably priced wines available from the Wine Connection shop that is part of the outlet. This means you can enjoy

a bottle of wine for under B500; and for a couple hundred baht more, you will find a wide selection of decent, drinkable wines. Add the wide selection of food available from the attached delicatessen, and you have the recipe that makes the place so popular. Definitely not a place for stuffy wine snobs, Wine Connection Deli & Bistro is for those out for a good time, an affordable glass of wine and some seriously good deli-style food.

The three Wine Loft locations are retail wine shops with facilities for wine tasting and light snacks. Our favorite outlet is at the Market Place on Soi Thonglor, just a short walk from the Thonglor BTS Station. The selection is large and the latest technology is used to keep wine a the right temperature and to store it so that it doesn't oxidize. Wines by the glass are frequently rotated and are offered in a tasting size and by the glass. The food is acceptable, but nothing to write home about. The Thonglor outlet is a capital spot to drink and snack at an outdoor table while watching all the beautiful people in the Thonglor area stroll by.

We were tempted not to include this place, but its popularity and locationin the middle of trendy Soi Thonglor, makes it a great place to watch and be seen. The atmosphere with its open deck and indoor dining is electrifying, especially upstairs where balconies provide views of Thonglor. The food is international in scope, but not particularly good. There are 170 wines available, but the serving staff no little about the wine on the list. On the other hand, it is a sexy place to make your fashion statement before heading out on the town for dinner and a good time.

    Bangkoks

You may not have heard about it nor had an opportunity to taste it; but Peruvian food was recently praised in the Wall Street Journal as being the food worlds next big thing. Bangkok has just joined a trendy list of international food cities to be graced with the addition of a Peruvian restaurant. Located on Soi 11 in the Frasier Suites; Above Eleven is hell bent on introducing the Thai market to the joys and wonder of Perus oldest fusion food called Nikkei cuisine. Nikkei style is a cultural mix of Peruvian ingredients combined with Japanese cooking techniques, and it is hailed as one of the worlds oldest examples of fusion food as it has existed in Peru for more than 120 years.

Peruvian cuisine is a combination of nearly 500 years of immigration and blending of food traditions from Europe, Africa, Japan, China and native Quechua culture. Located along 1884 kilometers of pristine coastline in South America and with the Andes mountain range to the west, Peru boasts an abundance of natural resources that are routinely used in their regional cuisine. Rohit Sachdev the Managing Director for Above Eleven is both knowledgeable

  • and passionate about this type of food. Opening up this restaurant is realization of one of his lifes ambitions as he has previously lived in Peru and acknowledges it as the country that his wife hails from. In Peru we have more than 1000 varieties of corn and between 70-80 different types of indigenous potatoes. We are dedicated to bringing what I feel sure will be one of the top cuisines in the world to Bangkok. In order to keep it as authentic as possible, Khun Rohit recruited Frank Omar Murray as the Executive Chef. Chef Omar is of Peruvian and Japanese descent and he is a co-owner of a successful Nikkei restaurant in Peru. Nikkei cuisine should be quite successful in Bangkok as it is flavorsome, comforting and tailor made to be shared. Its generous use of local chilies will have wide appeal as Above Eleven is committed to sourcing as many ingredients as possible from Thailand. Currently the only imported ingredient used is Aji Amarillo, which is a hot yellow chili that is fundamental to Peruvian cooking. Guests can look forward to trying familiar dishes such as Sashimi, Sushi Rolls and Cebiche (which is Peruvian-style ceviche) in addition to some unfamiliar dishes like Tiraditos, Causas and Anticuchos. We recommend starting off with the fiery Cebiche Above Eleven which is raw seabass and cooked prawns marinated in spicy Tigers Milk (Leche De Tigre) which is coconut milk, chilies and lime. It is topped off with fresh Deep Fried Calamari for a stimulating dish of contrasting textures and temperatures. The perfect accompaniment to this dish is a Pisco Sour cocktail which is made from Peruvian grape brandy, lime juice, simple syrup, bitters

    19

  • and egg whites for a foamy consistency. Other must try dishes include the Tiradito Sea Bass Aji Amarillo which is thinly sliced raw seabass with yellow chili leche de

tigre and it is served with Orange Glazed Sweet Potatoes. The Causa Kani is also not to be missed. This is a masterful offering of traditional Peruvian mashed potatoes mixed with lime, onion, chili and then topped with chilled crab salad, sliced avocado and a boiled quail egg. It is a creamy and sophisticated delight. The Anticucho Beef Heart is additionally divine; its an upscale version of the kebab style grilled meats that are commonly sold by vendors on the streets of Peru. The meat is tender and bursting with beef flavor. The highlight is a very traditional dish called Seco De Cordero, which is a delectable lamb shank that has been slow cooked for 3 hours and seasoned with a mix of beer, cilantro, cumin and aji amarillo chili. Its served with white beans and rice and it is comfort food at its best. For Dessert you cant go wrong with the Torta Tres Leches which is a decadent cake made with 3 types of milk and cinnamon. Time will only tell if Peruvian Nikkei cuisine will be the next big thing in Bangkok, but what can be determined is that it is exciting cuisine that should delight

both foreign and Thai palates. There is nothing like it anywhere else in the city and it

is appealing because it is both familiar and exotic.

  • The Energy Food

    Syndrome

  • W hen it comes to exercising, there are those who do and those who dont. And as everyone

knows, there are countless reasons for belonging to the

do group. Unfortunately, most of us are masters at developing excuses for remaining one who

doesnt rather than becoming one of the lofty few who does. Two

justifications commonly bandied about for maintaining our sedentary lifestyles

are (1) there is no place in Bangkok to exercise and (2) I cant afford to join one of those fancy

health clubs. In the paragraphs that follow, we propose to

shame you into exercising more by demonstrating that both of these excuses really arent true. So if you are one of those whose primary daily workout involves climbing the stairs to the Skytrain, read on. The information you receive might just

motivate you to move your tick from the dont to the do box.

Perhaps the most important form of exercise for 21 Century couch potatoes is the kind that

makes our hearts beat faster. Exercise physiologists, and those annoying people who can run around without getting tired, call this aerobic exercise. This is a fancy way of describing activities that make our hearts beat more quickly. Research shows that if we do this for 30 minutes or so at least three times

a week, all sorts of good things happen

to us. One of the most

common forms of aerobic exercise is jogging, but as

anyone with an ounce of common sense quickly realizes, this is not

something that should be done along

    st

    28

  • the streets of Bangkok. If you dont get clobbered by a car or break your leg in a chuck hole, you will certainly soon die of asphyxiation. We suggest leaving jogging on city streets to the scantily clad exhibitionists who can occasionally be seen dodging vehicles on Sukhumvit Road. Fortunately, there are places in the city far enough from fumes and hostile drivers that people can jog and exercise in relative safety.

Jogging is not the only form of aerobic exercise. Any activity that will sustain a heart rate of 50-85 percent of an individuals

maximum rate for over 20 minutes is aerobic exercise. Aerobic activities include fast walking, jogging, swimming bicycling and activities like badminton, tennis and squash.

    Exercising in Bangkoks Parks

Unfortunately, Bangkok is blessed with few parks, but those that do exist often have enough space to jog or exercise away from the pollution hovering along the citys streets. Probably the most popular place in the city for keeping fit is enormous Lumpini Park, centrally located at the intersection of Silom and Rama IV Roads. Open from 05:00 to 21:00 each day, it is always filled with people making themselves healthier by walking, jogging and running around the parks 2.54 km scenic circuit. In the morning and late afternoon, it is especially popular and many of the citys bright and beautiful can be seen keeping themselves fit in their designer exercise outfits. Renting a pedle boat is another activity at Lumpini that can provide good exercise. Organized aerobic activities are conducted each day at 18:00 for those who want a good workout after a hard day at the office. Chatuchak Park on Kamphaeng Phet Road (opposite the Northern Bus Terminal) is another popular spot with the keeping fit bunch. It has a lot of open space and a 3.1 km jogging path. Row boats

    29

  • and pedal boats are available for those who want to do their exercise on water. There is also a place for those who want to lift weights and at 18:00 each day there are organized aerobics activities. The park is open from 05:00-21:00 each day. On the other side of town, popular Benjasiri Park offers badly needed exercise options. Located adjacent to the Emporium Shopping Complex on Sukhumvit Road, the relatively small park is popular with walkers and joggers. There is also an exercise area for those who want to flatten their tummies and develop their biceps. King Rama IX Royal Park is 200 acre public park on Si Nakharin Road. Open from 06:00 to 18:00 each day, it is filled with exercise options for those serious about getting into shape. Jogging and exercise stations are available for those who want to both run and get rid of some of their flab. And for those who like to exercise with a group, organized aerobic activities are scheduled in the morning from 06:30 until 09:30. Railroad Park An excellent place for those who want to jog there way to good health is Railroad Park (Suan Rodfai) which is located across the road from Chatuchak Park. Although fairly small, it has nice facilities. There is an area for jogging and riding bicycles and bicycle rentals are available for 20 baht an hour. There are also facilities available for playing tennis and basketball, both excellent forms of aerobic exercise. Organized aerobic activities are also available.

    30

  • Health Clubs

A large select ion of independent and hotel operated health clubs and fitness centers are available to Bangkokians. Some of the clubs found in hotels are actually independent as they are owned and operated by companies separate from

the management and ownership of the hotel. All of these clubs offer exercise machines and a variety of activities

designed to build muscle and make your heart beat faster. A few of the larger places even have jogging tracks that provide

an excellent opportunity to jog away from Bangkoks infamous vehicle fumes. There are several reasons for shopping around and actually using a health club before joining it. The most important thing is to insure that it is a place at which you feel comfortable. You might find that you dont like the trainers some are really obnoxious; the equipment might be in poor condition; or there may be too many members for the facilities available. These are the kind of things can be discovered only by actually using the club a few times. Shopping around will also insure that you get a good price. It is AMAZING how prices will drop if you try a place a couple of times, but seem reluctant to join. Most health clubs have promotions and special deals of some sort so be sure that you discover what they are. A common deal is a significant discount if you use the club between 09:00 and 17:00. One hotel club with superb facilities, for example, only charges 1000 baht a month if you exercise during these hours. If you pay three months in advance, the cost is a remarkably low 2500 baht. When examining health clubs dont neglect to check with some of the citys smaller hotels. Many of them have excellent facilities that often arent as busy as the fitness centers in bigger hotels. They are also much more likely to have a reasonable price tag. Now the rest is up to you! Get off that couch, turn off the television and start exercising. Its good for you!
