At a property parade today, the police said they have solved 61 cases of theft, robbery and other crimes. The police have recovered 1.63 kg of gold ornaments, 5.38 kg of silver articles and Rs 7.21 lakh cash. The police have also recovered 11 four-wheel- ers, 25 two-wheelers, one autorickshaw, three laptops and nine mobile phones. No hike in prices of diesel soon New Delhi: As the UPA government is under at- tack for the fourth petrol hike this year and is struggling hard to bring down the prices, sources have told NDTV that there will not be any hike in the prices of diesel in the near fu- ture. Top government sources say that it's a polit- ically difficult situation as several states are go- ing to polls in the coming year. And hike in diesel prices usually pushes up the prices of food items particularly the vegetables and fruits because the transportation costs go up. The decision to increase petrol prices by Rs. 1.82 a litre last week provoked a confrontation with Mamata Banerjee, who is the biggest partner in the union government after the Con- gress. There has been a 40 per cent hike in petrol prices in the last one year. iPhone 4S may be launched on Nov 25 New Delhi: Aircel India has just announced on its official Facebook page that it will be bring the iPhone 4S to India. If the indications are anything to go by, the former minister contesting the Bellary Rural by-election as an independent could rock the government if he asks all his sup- porters and elected representatives from the BJP and representing the Bellary region to quit the party. But the consolation for the BJP govern- ment is that the countdown might begin only after the by-election to the Bellary Rural as- sembly constituency on November 30. The counting will take place on December 3. There are 17 BJP MLAs from Gadag, Raichur, Bellary and Chitardurga districts who have put their force behind B Sriramu- lu, who has come out of the BJP saying his self-respect was dented by saffron party senior leaders. Sources in the Sriramulu camp said that all these MLAs could resign en masse once the by-election is over. The Bharatiya Janata Party has 120 MLAs now. Of them one is a Speaker, who cannot vote in case of a trust vote. If the 17 MLAs choose to part ways with the party, the strength could come down to 103, falling far short of the half-way mark of 113. The indications are already clearly visible, many party elected representatives refused to be part of the team that went with the of- ficial candidate Gaadi Lingappa while he filed his nomination papers yesterday. They have openly revolted against the state BJP. Some of those prominent are Sri- ramulu’s sister and Bellary MP J Shanta, Kampli MLA T H Suresh Babu, who is Ra- mulu’s brother-in-law, Raichur MP Sanna Phakeerappa, who too is related to the Bel- lary strongman, and Kudligi MLA Nagendra. At the same time, there are differences within the BJP over campaigning for the of- ficial candidate. Former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa was conspicuous by his ab- sence at Bellary yesterday when Lingappa was filing nomination papers. His support- ers in the area too chose to stay away. Or should we be financially pru- dent and fly profitably?" In another post that came in minutes after the first one, Mallya seemed unhappy over the taxes. Kingfisher says flights had to be cancelled because of route ra- tionalisation and due to the air- line's efforts at improving pro- ductivity. In a statement, the airlines said, "As per the revised schedule, it will offer 300 daily flights connecting 54 cities as compared to its previous sched- ule of 340 flights." "Kingfisher has been in busi- ness for six years and it will con- tinue to be around. There is no doubt in our mind as a manage- ment team or Dr Mallya as a promoter of the airline about the credibility or the future of the airline," Kingfisher's CEO Sanjay Aggarwal said. Sources say the airline has sought Finance Ministry's help on its loans. But the airline main- tains it hasn't asked for a gov- ernment bailout; it says it has asked banks to increase limits in order to meet escalating opera- tions costs. Civil aviation minis- ter Vayalar Ravi said on Friday that "There is no package and government of India has no plans for a package. He (Vijay Mallya) did not ask for a package. But this is one of the major airlines and the government did not want to see it close down. I hope the banks will come forward. We will talk to them." The confusion was created when sup- porters of independent candidate and for- mer minister B Sriramulu raised objection saying that Lingappa had not cancelled his contractor’s licence before filing his nomination papers. The election rules states that the can- didates should not hold any trade li- cences at the time of contesting for the elections. Ekya school celebration Dip in industrialproduction

worries FKCCIBangalore: As expected, indus-trial production growth in thecountry continues to be on adownslide. The latest data onindex of industrial productionfor September indicates that theindustrial production registereda two-year low of 1.9%. Mininghas registered a significant de-cline (-5.6%) in this month.

FKCCI is worried with the con-tinued decline in industrial pro-duction over the past threemonths. It feels that this is mainlydue to the RBI’s restrictive mon-etary policy of increasingly con-tinuously. The high interest ratesare contributing to significantfinancial cost increase on thesupply side and high interestcosts on loans to consumers onthe demand side. The high coston loans to consumers has re-flected in the continuous fall inthe sale of passenger cars from

July 2011 onwards.Adding fuel to this is the con-

tinued double-digit inflation.FKCCI appeals to the govern-

ment and RBI to take necessarycorrective steps immediately toarrest this slide.

Coffee planters may getgood prices this year

Shortage in global market could help, says Coffee Board chief L Raghunanda

Bangalore Beat Bureau

Bangalore: Except some parts of cof-fee-growing regions in the state, wherethe production has been affected dueto rain, the general output of the beanis good this season, said Jawaid Akhtar, chairman, Coffee Board India.

“The post-monsoon estimation ofcrop, capturing the impact of monsoonrain, is under progress. Once it is com-pleted, the Coffee Board will have acomplete picture of and can think ofdamage-control measures. We cannotmake any flimsy assumptions as ofnow,” he said.

On the scenario in the global market,he said Indian growers can expect goodprice this year. This is because coffeeproduction in South American countries, like Brazil, Columbia and Costa Rica, has been affected with the crop failingdue to rain and snow.

But he warned that the global marketcannot be predicted. Sometimes, theprices won’t move up. The positive pre-diction is that there will be a deficit ofcoffee as compared to the demand inthe global market. While coffee pro-duction across the globe is going upby 1 percent per annum, the demandis increasing by 2 percent.

“But if we have to maintain theshare of exports and sustain domesticmarket requirements, we need increaseproduction by about 5 percent per an-num, which is a big challenge. Producersworldwide have started taking bettercare of their crops, increasing thechances of overall production by 2012-13. Added to this, 2012-13 will be yearfor the Brazil crop with estimations of

all-time record crop of about 60 millionbags. Vietnam is also expected to delivera bumper crop of about 20 million bags.Columbia, which had been reelingunder crop setbacks for the past threeyears, may also recover by croppingseason next year. In India, we are ex-pected to get 30 million bags (each bagwith 60 kg) and produce a high crop. This may take us to the surplus levels.

On the market scenario, he said, “Myfeeling, which is shared by other experts,

is that one should be cautious in gaugingthe market.”

The scenario is rosy this year as thedemand for coffee is more. The pro-duction target needs to be enhanced. The exports, till September, has been60,09,017 metric tonnes. Export fromBrazil is 3,42,89,152 MT, Vietnam1,68,50,000 MT, Columbia 80,64,439MT, Indonesia 5,487,357 MT, Honduras38,66,002 MT, Guatemala 36,53, 933MT, Peru 35,56,338 MT, Uganda

31,50,090 MT and Ethiopia 30,22,385MT.

Asked about the progress the boardhas made in fulfilling the demandsmade by coffee-growers on freezingtheir loans as many of them have turneddefaulters, Akhtar was quick to react.“The board has made a lot of progress. Many small and large growers havebenefited by freezing of loans since2004. Representatives from the boardand planters associations, like the Unit-

ed Planters Association of South India(UPASI) and Karnataka Planters’ As-sociation (KPA), have approached thegovernment. The government was readyto freeze loans and also share the bailoutburden. It has already pumped in Rs450 crore towards bailing out theplanters. Banks too have pitched in byextending loans of 150 crore. Over1,20,000 coffee planters have benefitedby debt-relief package and resurgencemeasure taken by the government andthe board.”

On the board’s move to address short-age of labour which has been affectingall levels of planters, he said, “Coffeeplantations can’t go without labour. But look at countries like Brazil, CostaRica, Columbia etc., which have largerareas under coffee cultivation. Theyare not facing such severe problem oflabour as they have opted for mecha-nisation.

“They have been conducting researchand coming out with machines for mostof the work, reducing dependence onmanual labour. There are a lot of ma-chines which can take up sprayingwork and removing weed. There aremachines for even drying. Now, soonafter the cherry is picked, it can bepulped and put to dryer. Dryers havecome as a great boon to majority ofplanters as during rainy season youcannot dry coffee in the yard. The ma-chine costs Rs 4 lakh and every growershould install them.”

The government and the board havebeen helping planters with procurementof machines. For those planters withless than 20 acres of land, the govern-ment is giving a subsidy of 50 percentfor purchasing machinery, he added.

The BJP made it a show ofstrength yesterday at Bellary withchief minister D V SadanandaGowda, Eshwarappa, ministersJagadish Shettar and GovindKarajol, and senior leaderPrahlad Joshi accompanying theofficial candidate to the by-pollreturning officer’s office.

Sadananda Gowda decided toleave quite late after he came toknow that Yeddyurappa wouldnot be part of the team. He can-celled all his engagements inBangalore and took a helicopterto Bellary.

Gaadi Ningappa’s choice toocame with great difficulty as Es-hwarappa wanted BJP ST Morchanational secretary Nagendra, while Yeddyurappa supportingthe candidature of BJP state STMorcha president Ashok Kumar. The two filed the nominationpapers, but now have to with-draw as the B form is denied toeither of them.

The decision was taken afterlocal BJP leaders advised Esh-warappa and Yeddyurappa notto support candidates who arenot from Bellary. Nagendra isfrom Bangalore, while AshokKumar is from Gowribidanur.

The Bellary leaders said any out-sider would not be able to con-vince the voters as the problemshere are unique.

Lingappa was chosen as hehas been the party district pres-ident and has moved with Sri-ramulu quite closely. The thoughtwas that Lingappa would be thebest person to take advantageof Sriramulu’s follies, if any.

Eshwarappa is planning totake action against all those whohave thrown their weight behindSriramulu, but has decided towait till the election. He fearsthat any move could adverselyaffect the prospects of the partycandidate.

Poll observers say that theywould rather put their moneybehind Congress candidate Ram-prasad, who could be the un-likely winner in the fight betweenthe official and rebel BJP sectionsin Bellary Rural constituency.

During the last assembly elec-tion, Ramprasad lost to Srira-mulu by a margin of over 25,000votes. He will campaign on theplanks of large scale illegla min-ing in the area by Sriramuluand Janardhana Reddy, corrup-tion cases against BJP ministersand “inaction” of the BJP gov-ernment on development.

Op Lotusforced 19by‑polls on state

Bangalore Beat Bureau

Bangalore: The state has faced21 by-elections since the BJP gov-ernment came to power in 2008.Of them, only two are for genuinereasons as the two sitting MLAspassed away.

Rest of them have been forcedbecause of the Operation Lotusby the ruling party, which hadthe habit of poaching legislatorsfrom other parties.

Operation Lotus gave the ma-jority to the ruling party, but losta lot of political mileage amongthe public.

Even the Bellary Rural by-elec-tion is because former ministerB Sriramulu chose to quit theparty and win back the seat asan independent.

Of the two “genuine” cases, the by-poll in Chitradurga Southconstituency was held becauseof the death of sitting MLA Chan-drashekar Patil Revur, while inKadur it was held after the demiseof K M Krishnamurthy.

Sorry for not informingDGCA: Kingfisher CEO

New Delhi: Ailing Kingfisher AirlinesCEO Sanjay Agarwal put up a bravefront on Friday and while speaking ex-clusively to Network 18 defended theflight cancellations as part of strategy.Agarwal said, "Cancellation of flightswas a well thought, pre-determinedplan. Cancelled flights on non-profitableroutes and for reconfiguration of seats."

Agarwal said that they had firstplanned to cancel flights for a shorterduration so thought need not be re-quired to notify the Directorate Generalof Civil Aviation (DGCA).

"We apologise to DGCA for not keep-ing them in loop, " added the CEO.

Nine more flights were cancelled inMumbai and 40 flights withdrawn fromall over the country on Saturday.

DGCA on Friday said Kingfisher Air-

lines have assured it that at any givenpoint of time not more than three oftheir aircraft would be out of use andmaintained the government is keepingan eye on whether airlines were usingtheir slots.

Pointing out that Kingfisher Airlineshas sent a reply explaining why its air-craft were not flying, DGCA head BharatBhushan said the airline has given re-configuration of the planes as the rea-son. The ground staff have not beenpaid for three months.

With his cash-strapped airline hittinga air pocket, Kingfisher chief VijayMallya tweeted on the crisis. He said,"Is it Kingfishers duty 2 fly on loss-making routes when State Governmentstax heavily? Or should we be financiallyprudent and fly profitably? Every Gov-

ernment has gone out of the way tosupport airlines and connectivity. InIndia airlines are over taxed and over

charged. Wonder why?"The stocks of the airline plunged to

an all-time low to 19.1 per cent in early

trading on the Bombay Stock Exchangeto a record low before recovering to9.45 per cent. Kingfisher needs over Rs1000 crore in working capital loans totide over its current crisis.

Oil companies to whom Kingfisherowes over Rs 200 crore have alreadythreatened to stop supplies, and airportstoo could follow.

Reaching out to the Aviation Ministrywas the last resort.

With employees also agitated overdelayed salaries, troubles are far fromover for the airline that once flew thegood times.

And it is not just Kingfisher Airlinesin trouble. Even Jet Airways has flowninto bad weather, posting a net loss ofRs 714 crore for the quarter ending inSeptember.

Federer pockets 800th career win Paris: Tennis icon Roger Federer wonthe 800th match of his storied careeron Friday with a 6-3, 7-5 defeat of Ar-gentine Juan Monaco to set up a semi-final at the Paris Masters with TomasBerdych.

The Swiss holder of a record 16 GrandSlam titles, who lifted his 68th trophylast weekend in Basel, claimed bothhis first and his most recent wins inFrance, scoring his first ATP success inSeptember, 1998, in Toulouse overFrenchman Guillaume Raoux.

Federer ended after just under 90minutes against Monaco with his sev-enth ace, lifting his record to 57-12 onthe season. He is the seventh man intennis history to break the 800-winbarrier.

He has also won his last 62 matchesagainst players ranked outside the Top20 as he beat number 34 Monaco.

Federer said: "It's nice. It's a lot ofmatches, a lot of tennis I've played, Iknow that. But I know there are manyother players that have played moretennis than I have.

"It's just another win, but it's a special

one nevertheless, because 800 is defi-nitely a big number."

Earlier Berdych outlasted secondseed Andy Murray in a marathon battleof missed opportunities 4-6, 7-6 (7/5),6-4.

Federer admitted their semi-finalcould keep fans on the edges of theirseats.

"I like to take it to Tomas, as well, and he does the same thing. So I thinkon an indoor court which we both like,it could be really quite spectacular, Ithink," added the Swiss.

The frustrated Murray ended with aforehand wide on a second match pointfor fifth seed Berdych, who qualifiedinto the field for the year-end WorldTour Finals starting a week from Sundayin London.

The struggle lasted for nearly three-and-a-quarter hours, with Murray miss-ing on 15 of 17 break point chancesand Berdych managing to break onlytwice from 14 opportunities.

"At this stage of the season, and howI have been feeling this week, it's tiring,"said Murray, whose 18-match win streak,

which included three Asian titles, wasended.

"At the end I was just fighting. Iwasn't hitting the ball unbelievable. Iwas just fighting, making a lot of balls."

Murray will head home to Londonto prepare for the eight-man seasonwrap-up without having ever reacheda semi at the Bercy arena.

"I got good practice going into Lon-don, but I'll need to work on a fewthings. I was moving much better thanI did in my first match by the end ofthis one.

"I was really unhappy with the wayI hit my backhand today, which is nor-mally my most solid shot, so that'ssomething I'll look to work on."

Berdych now stands 3-1 over Murrayin their series, winning their last threedating to 2006 and including a victorylast year at Roland Garros.

"It was really one of the best three-set matches I played, with the quality,"said the Czech.

"This kind of match cannot happenwith just one player, Andy played agood game, as well.

"I'm the happier one today. I lovegoing to the court to try to play matcheslike that. It's the best feeling."

Off court, top seed Novak Djokovicpulled out to hand Frenchman Jo-Wil-fried Tsonga a walkover into the lastfour due to a shoulder injury.

The Serb world number one said hisshoulder had worsened after his 4-6,6-3, 6-1 victory over compatriot ViktorTroicki on Thursday.

"I have pushed myself to the limitby playing, and after the match yester-day my shoulder got worse," Djokovicannounced on his official website.

ATP officials said Friday Djokovicflew directly to his Monte Carlo base tobegin treatment by the same specialistswho somehow got him fit for a Parisstart after re-injuring the shoulder inlast weekend's Basel semifinal loss toKei Nishikori. With players for the eight-man World Tour Finals due in Londonon Thursday, the timetable givesDjokovic at least six treatment days.

2nd Test: Indialook to wrap itup with spin

Kolkata: A buoyant India willhope to dominate the West Indiesagain with spin as they bid tosecure a series-clinching win inthe second Test starting at theEden Gardens in Kolkata on Mon-day. The latest spin duo ofRavichandran Ashwin andPragyan Ojha shared 16 wicketsto help India cruise to a five-wicket victory in the openingcontest of the three-match seriesin New Delhi on Wednesday.Left-arm spinner Ojha had a six-wicket haul in the first inningsand debutant off-spinner Ashwinalso took six in the second in-nings on a low, slow turningtrack to trouble the West Indiesbatsmen. The duo's success cameat the right time for India, whohad been looking for match-win-ning spinners after the retirementof Anil Kumble in 2008 and Harb-hajan Singh's recent slump inform.

Ashwin, who replaced Harb-hajan, did not let the selectorsdown with match figures of 9-128, the second-best haul by anIndian debutant after leg-spinnerNarendra Hirwani's 16-136against the West Indies in 1988.Ashwin, who is getting marriedon Sunday, was lauded by thelegendary Indian off-spinner Er-apalli Prasanna for his disci-plined performance whichearned him the man-of-the-match award. "I am impressedwith the way Ashwin bowled inthe first Test," said Prasanna."His line and length was impec-cable, his basics were right andhe used his height well to gen-erate spin."

The Eden Gardens wicket hastraditionally helped spin and itis unlikely to be any differentthis time, leaving the touristswith a tough task if they are tobounce back in the series. Indiaalso batted well in the secondinnings in New Delhi when theycomfortably chased a challenging276-run target on the difficultpitch.

Batting superstar Sachin Ten-dulkar, who is on the verge ofan unprecedented 100th inter-national century, showed theway with a solid 76 before V V SLaxman completed the win withan unbeaten half-century.

Opener Virender Sehwag pro-vided brisk starts with Gautam

Gambhir in both the inningswith a pair of half-centuries,while veteran Rahul Dravidcracked a fighting 54 in the firstinnings.

The West Indies had seizedthe early advantage when theybowled India out for 209 afterposting 304 in the first innings, but failed to capitalise on it andcrashed to 180 in the second in-nings.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul of-fered the main resistance, scoring118 and 47 in the match.

West Indies skipper DarrenSammy conceded his batsmenneeded to solve the Indian spinpuzzle soon to stay alive in theseries.

"We need to find a way toscore against spin. Attackingagainst the spinners could bean option like Chanderpaulshowed in both the innings," hesaid.

"We could have been morepositive without being reckless. That is something we can lookat for the second Test. We willwork hard at the nets to get itright.

"We were ahead for a portionof the match and we should havemaintained that advantage. Inmany ways we see this as an op-portunity missed as we let Indiaback into the match and theytook it away from us," said Sam-my.

West Indies seamers Sammyand Fidel Edwards, and leg-spin-ner Devendra Bishoo impressedin the last Test, but they willneed to keep constant pressureon the formidable Indian battingline-up.
