Located deep in India’s Garhwal Himalaya, Mt. Meru is a definitive and elusive test of high altitude, big-wall mountaineering – more than two dozen attempts failed to reach the top over the past three decades. American alpinist Conrad Anker will share how he and climbing partners Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk became the first to succeed via the Shark’s Fin route (6,309 metres) in October of 2011.

Anker’s presentation will be followed by films in competition.

Two of the world’s luminaries on sustainability will join forces in Banff this year to discuss a different way of measuring growth, development – and happiness. Canadian conservationist, writer, and broadcaster David Suzuki will be joined onstage by Dasho Kinley Dorji, journalist and Secretary of Information and Communications for the mountain kingdom of Bhutan. Their subject? Gross National Happiness, and how the concept might benefit the world at large. Dorji, former editor-in-chief of Bhutan’s national newspaper, is well-placed to explain the concept of Gross National Happiness, a measure of quality of life and social progress.

Illustrious British mountaineer Stephen Venables is the subject of this year’s Voices of Adventure interview with climber, writer, and psychologist Geoff Powter. Venables has pioneered many new routes around the world – including a new route up the Kangshung Face of Everest without supplemental oxygen. He wrote the screenplay for the IMAX film The Alps, and has published 12 books, including Himalaya Alpine Style which was translated into four languages and won the Grand Prize in the 1996 Banff Mountain Book Competition.

Wind from a Distant SummitOne of New Zealand’s top mountaineers, Pat Deavoll has climbed at an elite level for more than three decades – including first ascents in Tibet, China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Her recent autobiography, Wind from a Distant Summit, is a rich and compelling adventure story that delves into the more personal aspects of elite mountaineering and chronicles her life-long struggle with clinical depression.

The Wild WithinBritain’s Simon Yates is one of the world’s most prolific and accomplished exploratory alpinists. With a climbing and writing career spanning over 25 years, he may be best known as Joe Simpson’s climbing partner in Touching the Void. Yates’ third and latest book, The Wild Within recounts the past 10 years of his career, which have taken him to Tierra del Fuego, Alaska, the Yukon, and Greenland.

Of the handful of alpinists who have climbed all 14 of the world’s 8,000-metre peaks without supplemental oxygen, Austria’s Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner is the lone female. Voted National Geographic’s Explorer of the Year in 2012, Kaltenbrunner reached the summit of K2 (8,611m) in August 2011, via the North Pillar – securing a place in history as one of the greatest alpinists of all time.

Kaltenbrunner’s presentation will be followed by films in competition.

This girl was born with skis on her feet! The progeny of a former US Ski Team dad and a bump-ripping mom, Lynsey Dyer won every contest she entered during her first year on the Freeski World Tour. With a calendar full of travel, work with SheJumps.org, and filming for ski movies, Dyer is one of the most in-demand professional skiers on the planet.

Dave MacLeod, arguably the best rock climber in Britain, is one of Scotland’s top athletes, period. By early October, all film finalists are chosen, and a detailed 2012 screening schedule is unveiled on our website, and published in the Festival program which is available in Banff at The Banff Centre, in Calgary at Mountain Equipment Co-op, and in Edmonton at Track ‘n’ Trail.

theatres and seatingAll Festival presentations are general admission with the exception of the Fridayevening Guest Speaker and Films in the Eric Harvie Theatre, which is reserved seating.

Live versus simulcastSelect events are presentedlive in the Eric Harvie Theatre as well as simulcast to the Margaret Greenham Theatre. Manyfestival-goers prefer simulcast presentations because the projected image of the speaker is larger than life. During intermission, we make every effort to bring the guest speakers to the simulcast location for a brief Q & A session. Please note the fi lm program after the break in the live theatre is different from that in the simulcast theatre.

the Fine Print Programs and speakers are subject to change without notice. Tickets are nonrefundable. To be eligible for the bonus coupon, Festival Pack events must be purchased in the same ticket order. All audience members must have a ticket (including infants).
