He has worked extensively as an educator directing ensembles and lecturing in composition, arranging and orchestration at secondary and tertiary levels. Daryl works as a freelance composer, arranger, trombonist and conductor. He has worked on national television shows including Hey Hey It’s Saturday, Australia’s Got Talent and Dancing with the Stars, and has orchestrated and conducted numerous Australian and international movie scores including The Truman Show, Red Dog, and The Sapphires. Daryl’s undergraduate studies in music were at the Victorian College of the Arts and North Texas State University. He holds a Master of Education (Music) from RMIT University. Club meeting report- 12 May 2020

President Warwick Cavell opened the meeting andwelcomed members and guests.Chair Neville John proposed a toast to RotaryInternational and reminded members that it is oneof the largest organisations in the world thatprovides opportunities for people to participate inwork that does “good” for our communities and theworld.President Warwick Cavell formally welcomedguests:

Natalie Ashdown: Creating long-lastingcultural change through coachingNatalie Ashdown is one of Australia’s most seniorand experi-enced coaches and a recognised speakerand author. Her pas-sion, vision, creativity andcommitment assist individuals, teams and companiesto create lasting cultural change using coach-ingskills. She is the CEO of Open Door Coaching anddirector of Open Door's Registered TrainingOrganisation.Natalie spoke to the club about her work as aprofessional coach. Natalie shared her observationsof leadership in organisation as they navigatethrough the current Corona Virus pandemic. Shehighlighted the fascinating work being undertaken bythe CSRIO and the leadership being demonstrated bythe organisation at this time.Natalie focussed much of her presentation on herwork with the Australian Air Force where she helpedcreate change across the organisation. A significantelement of the strategy was the use of a “forcemultiplier affect”. This approach involved training asmall group of individual in the skills of coachingwho would then train others in the skills of coaching,changing the organisations approach to learning anddevelopment.Initially 13 individuals were trained in a Certificate IVin coaching who then coached 208 other coaches whothrough the “force multiplier affect” coached 7552others in the Coaching 101 program.The Air Force utilised the coaching program andtechniques to:

Natalie explained that coaching doesn’t solve a person’sproblems but rather, brings the best out in people.Coaching is about asking the right questions at the righttime. Coaching differs from other techniques in that theaim is to:

World Bee Day Waggle Dance

Rotary Club of Canterbury In the midst of the Covid-19 crisis, there is an opportunityto brighten the days of your family and friends byinspiring them to celebrate World Bee Day on 20 May. As part of the celebration between now and then they canlearn the ‘Waggle Dance’, video themselves doing it, andupload it to the World Bee Day website! The main purpose of World Bee Day events is to spreadawareness of the significance of bees and other pollinatorsfor our survival. Simply proclaiming World Bee Day doesnot do much for bees and other pollinators; the mainwork of safeguarding their existence still needs to beundertaken. World Bee Day is an excellent opportunity toput bees at the centre of the national conversation for aday and encourage actions that create more bee-friendlylandscapes. Because of the lockdown, World Bee Day celebrationshave been forced online, but they are energetic and full offun. Besides the Waggle Dance, there is also a specialscreening of the most wonderful film ‘Honeyland’ on 20May. To find out more about World Bee Day click here. The 2020 Global Online Waggle Dance Challenge is anattempt to achieve 20,000 waggle dance videos, from 20countries, in 20 days, ending on the 20th May 2020. Thefigure 20,000 was chosen because that’s how manyspecies of bees there are doing extraordinary work for theplanet every day.
