What is a vaccine?A vaccine is a preparation intended to stimulate chemical or organic natural defenses of the organism. Usually a vaccine prevents or reduces the effects of a particular infection. There are several types: live attenuated vaccine (live) vaccine inactivated (killed). Vaccines need to be kept in fridge in order not to be damaged.

What is the smallpox?The smallpox is a contagious infectious disease thatcan bring to death. There are records of its existence since at least 3,500 years and spreads worldwide killing one in three infected.

Balmis Expedition:Six years after the vaccine was discovered, King Charles IV had to undertake vaccination campaigns in America. The campaign was lead by Francisco Javier de Balmis and Josep Salvany. The expedition departed from A Corunya in 1803. Later they introduced the vaccine in Asia. But how did they manage to carry the vaccine without being damaged?

The expedition took away 22 children from an orphanage with his teacher. 2 days a week they injected the vaccine to all of them and thanks to that they could preserve the vaccines.
