GOOD DEEDS BY BOY SCOUTS & VFW BRING MUSIC TO MAPLEWOOD MANOR
BALLSTON SPA – Good deeds by members of Boy Scouts Troop 1 and VFW Post 358 have made it possible for music from bygone eras to be played on an heirloom piano inside of the Saratoga County nursing home at Ma-plewood Manor. It is hoped the vintage Musette brand spinet, which was donated by the Russian-born family of former Maplewood Chaplain Lena Romanov, will lift the spirits of residents and their loved ones for years to come. Maplewood Administrator Diane Brown said the donation was a community project orchestrated by composer-pianist Cole Broderick’s wife Ann who arranged for Boy Scouts Troop 1 to deliver the piano to the facility and for it to be tuned by Richard Varley thanks to a donation by VFW Post 358. Many thanks to all who helped make the piano donation possible. Those Boy Scouts who rolled up their sleeves to assist with the move were Evan Piscitelli, Brandon Reid, Andrew Roby, Justin Sanders and Greg Wilson. The latter also treated Maplewood residents to an im-promptu piano performance upon its arrival at the nursing home. Greg, a Ballston Spa Middle School student whose Great Aunt Fran is a Maple-wood resident, hopes to entertain again on a future nursing home visit. Parent volunteers who aided Harrison and the Boy Scouts included Bill Parlapiano, Mike Piscitelli, Cherrie Sanders, Marcos Vargas and Gary Wil-son. An unexpected, but welcome, extra pair of hands showed up in the form of Good Samaritan Dave Abbarno, who recently moved from Colo-rado to Ballston Spa in order to accept a position with GlobalFoundries in Malta. Within days of the piano being moved to Maplewood Manor, VFW Post 358 Quartermaster John Lombardo presented a motion at the Post’s monthly meeting asking that members pledge to cover the cost of having the old piano professionally tuned.

TECHNOLOGY AN INTEGRAL
PART OF DEFENSIVE
DRIVING(MS) — Safety is foremost on the minds of many drivers. Automobile accidents can be detrimental to a driver’s health as well as his or her wallet, causing potentially costly damage to vehicles and resulting in higher insur-ance premiums.
Driving defensively is a great way for drivers to reduce their risk of accident, but even the most cautious driv-ers are not entirely immune to collisions or fender bend-ers. Thankfully, drivers can do more than exercise cau-tion to improve their overall safety on the road.
• Minimize distractions. Cau-tious drivers are always on the lookout for more care-less motorists with whom they share the highways, but those same drivers may not realize they’re creating distractions within their own vehicles. Loud music blaring
on car stereos, fuzzy dice or trinkets hanging from rear-view mirrors and cluttered vehicle interiors can take a driver’s attention away from the road, decrease his or her visibility or make it more dif-fi cult to eff ectively operate a car or truck, each of which can increase a driver’s risk of accident. Limit such distrac-tions inside your vehicle and ask any passengers to keep their voices low when com-ing along for a ride.
• Utilize automotive technol-ogy. Advancements in au-tomotive technology have done much to make driving safer, but such advance-ments are not limited to rearview camera systems or other increasingly popular vehicle accessories. Philips Vision LED Lights employ new technology that is de-signed to replace the stan-dard incandescent bulbs that most vehicles use for brake lights, taillights and backup lights. Unlike tradi-tional incandescent bulbs that may take a little time to light up, Vision LED lights turn on instantly, helping to
increase driver visibility. In addition, having brake lights that illuminate instantly makes it easier for other driv-ers to react to any sudden stops your vehicle may need to make.
• Make your car a smart-phone-free zone. Smart-phones have become so prevalent that many people may feel as though their smartphones are an exten-sion of themselves. While smartphones can make life easier, they also can make driving more dangerous. When driving, store your smartphone in the glove compartment so you can avoid the temptation to read incoming emails or text mes-sages when stuck in traffi c or traversing busy highways.
• Choose lasting safety up-grades. Drivers concerned about the safety of their vehicles often choose to upgrade their lights to pro-tect themselves and their passengers. Capable of han-dling extreme heat and high vibrations, Philips Vision LED Lights include a 12-year lim-ited warranty, whereas tra-ditional incandescent bulbs typically last just a few years before they need to be re-placed. When making safety upgrades to your vehicle, make sure such upgrades are not just temporary ad-justments but long-lasting changes that contribute to you and your passengers’ long-term safety.

Vinny
Spencer
Crowley
Vinny is a neutered male Shepherd mix. Vinny is a gentle old soul who just wants to hang out with you. He’s good
with older children and dogs, house-trained and likes to go for walks. Vinny would be best in a home with another dog he can be friends with. As Vinny is a Senior, he is free to
any seniors through our Senior-to-Senior program. Vinny is neutered, up to date on his shots, and microchipped.
Spencer is a 2-year old neutered male Scottie/Border Collie mix who weighs 28lbs. He’s a stray from Warren County who is a sweet boy once he gets to know you! Spencer loves to ride in the car, is good with dogs and he’s housebroken. His foster has found out that he will jump in your lap and fall asleep. Every day we are learning more about Spencer and he is showing us what a good dog he can be! Spencer is neutered, up to date on
his shots, and microchipped.
Benson
Crowley is an absolutely gorgeous green eyed 1-year-old boy that was rescued as a kitten from a woodpile and a life of
fending for himself outdoors. Crowley is very affectionate and loves attention but has not been adopted yet because he is a “scaredy-cat” ...waiting for a family patient enough to give him the time he needs to trust. He’s great with his foster family
and with many others that have taken the time to get to know him. Once Crowley gets to know you he’s a really amazing guy that will be so grateful to have a forever home. Crowley is great with other cats and dogs. Are you willing to give this regal boy a chance? Crowley is neutered, up to date on his
shots and negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia.
Benson is all black except for a little tuxedo white splash on his chest. As of June 6, he was 10-weeks old. Benson is energetic, friendly and playful. All HOPE cats are spayed/neutered, up to date on their shots, and have tested negative for Feline
Leukemia and FIV.

Lena & Her KittensLena and her babies were abandoned at an auto body fa-cility in Corinth. She was very scared and confused when
they first took her in. She is a loving and sweet mama with three loving babies. They all have wonderful personalities.
First pic is the girl. Second pic is the special needs boy. He's deaf and born with mi-nor neurological problems and so will be adopted out as a special needs puppy. He
has the best personality, in my opinion, and LOVES cats!!! The third (black) is a little boy. They are all precious and have been vet checked, wormed and given first shots.
How cute are these little guys? They were an owner turn in to a very high kill
shelter. They have all been vet checked, wormed and
given shots. They have won-derful little personalities.
One of these babies would be perfect if you don't want a larger dog.
These babies and their Mom have had first set of shot, vet check and
worming. For more information please come call the shelter or come by so meet your next purr bunny. We
have many many kittens and cats available.
AFTER THE FIRE PERFORM LITTER CONTROL
BALLSTON SPA - After The Fire has adopted the Assemblyman Jim Tedisco Fitness Trail in Ballston Spa for litter control since 2006. Members make regular trips as soon as the snow has gone for the season, until the snow files again. The Village has placed a trash receptacle at each end of the trail, and users of the trail have been increasingly diligent about using them. Everyone is urged to carry their trash to the receptacles (ciga-rette butts included), as a courtesy to others, to obey the law, and to maintain the aesthetics of the trail. After The Fire helps residents of Saratoga County who have suffered a loss due to fire.
