Proven ExperienceWith the IMO’s Ballast Water Management Convention entering into force in September 2017, our experts have been working closely with operators, integrators and equipment manufacturers to tailor the most cost-effective solution for both new build and existing ships, helping to ensure compliancy with the Convention and/ or US Coast Guard requirements.

UK Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA)Working with the RFA and A&P, BMT developed a refit specification for the retrofit of Ballast Water Treatment plants to the RFA’s Bay Class Landing Platform ships.

Our work enabled successful BWS plant installation first time round, and

further work saw us developing Ballast Water System (BWS) Test, Trials and Commissioning documentation for RFA LYME BAY. The package delivered by BMT confirmed to the customer/operator that the system met the Convention’s relevant requirements.

Working with the NDMA and shipyard DSME, BMT developed the ballast water system, including the ballast water treatment and plan approval documentation to DNV GL’s acceptance for the Norwegian Royal Navy’s Logistic Support Vessel (LSV).

We analysed legislation, class rules and the client’s specification, and looked at available proven technologies to provide a type approved and balanced solution for the platform. Working closely with customers and stakeholders in the development of the system, ensured acceptance and de-risked the design.

U.S Commercial Fleet ImpactsBMT conducted an in-depth study of ballasting practices for towing vessels and barges operating in U.S. waters. This work entailed interviews with ocean, coastwise, and inland waterways operators and BWT equipment suppliers to better

understand potential financial/operational impacts of the Ballast Water Management rulemaking process on vessel operations. BMT additionally performed a study of the ballast water regulatory environment, available technologies, and future impact on the design of a large oil tanker.

U.S. Navy Program SupportUnder Prime Contract with the U.S. Navy, BMT is providing support for the identification and assessment of technologies to manage and treat ballast water aboard military vessels. This includes reviewing and making recommendations on the implications of state, national, and international ballast water regulations;

compliance and tracking methodologies; technical assessments; applicability evaluations; operational impacts; guidance for new vessels and retrofits; risk assessments; and conducting testing, research, development and evaluation of BWM systems, components, organisms, tools, sensors, and effluents in the laboratory.
