1. GENERAL INFORMATION

HISTORY

Balıkesir University, School of Tourism and Hotel Management was first established in 1975

with the name of Balıkesir School of Tourism and Hotel Management as a sub-unit of Bursa

Academy of Economic and Administrative Sciences. Until 1982 it consisted of two

departments, management and tourism. Under the Act 2547, the name and status of the school

was turned into Uludağ University, Balıkesir School of Tourism and Hotel Management.

Since 1992, under the Act 3837, the School of Tourism and Hotel Management has been a

school of Balıkesir University.

Balıkesir University School of Tourism and Hotel Management has made its name heard in

tourism education through its bright background for over 29 years, contemporary education

atmosphere, and experienced academic staff. School is a state school shaping management of

tourism in Turkey, keeping this shape up-to-date, offering modern education and training

atmosphere to the students, educating the students in such a way to compete with the other

rivals in national and international platform.

The main objective of the school is to bring up executives for tourism sector. With the

departments of Travel Management, Hospitality Management and Tourist Guiding, the

school has aimed to meet the need for qualified work power in the sector. Besides general

occupational education and training, the students are supported with a professional foreign

language and a second language to be graduated in more advantageous way for the tourism

sector. At the school the academic staff of which is quite rich, various professional formation

programs are also available.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Balıkesir University School of Tourism and Hotel Management is in the status of a 4 years

school training at the level of license. School, since 1998-1999 Training and Education Term,

has rendered education and training in the fields of Accommodation Management, Travel

Management, and Tourist Guiding. Students are applied an intensive foreign language

program in the first year and as from the first year students are required to take the second

foreign language. Since the term of 2001-2002, students have been enrolled at our school in

night education as well as former.

PRACTISING UNITS

Computer Lab: The lab consisting of 30 computers where computer programs (Galileo,

Fidelio, Sentez, Odeon) utilized in tourism enterprises are taught and it supplies computerized

study place for student.

Foreign Language Lab: There exist two foreign language labs hosting 30 persons. The

Center organizes language courses in Russian, French and Italian. These courses are offered

during the academic year.

Service- Bar Lab: There exist a lab for 40 persons to have the students practise in service,

food and beverage management courses.

Internet: Academicians and students have been rendered an internet network.

Conference Room: There exist a conference room hosting 200 persons. Educational

programmes, conferences that the managers of tourism establishments and sector

professionals give to the students, seminars, symposiums, congress, etc... are held in

conference room.

Library: There exist a comprehensive library regarding tourism management. Library

embodies foreign resources as well as local ones. Besides apart from basic books on

management and economics, it has 7000 books and 68 kinds of magazines.
