PARADISE LOST? THE IMPACTS OF MARINE DEBRIS IN BALI

RESEARCH SUMMARY

Marine debris is recognised as a threat to marine organisms and habitats around the world. Up to 90% of rubbish recovered from beaches around the world consists of plastic waste. The primary impacts on marine wildlife result from eating fragments of plastic or becoming entangled in plastic, both of which can lead to the death of affected animals.

Although the impacts are well documented, plastic production continues to increase each year and with it, the potential for increasing quantities making their way into the oceans. A recent review suggested that up to 5% of plastic waste generated by countries with marine coastlines finds its way into the ocean.

Taking into consideration population size, distance to the coast and the amount of waste generated per person per year, Indonesia has been identified as the second highest contributor to total global plastic marine debris. This research will focus on one of the most popular tourist destinations in Indonesia, the island of Bali. It will measure the amount of debris on beaches and in the water around the island and investigate the impact of factors such as population density, number of tourists, waste management options and different cultural practices in addressing the problem.

VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIESThe program will involve the following activities:

1) Marine debris surveys - collecting marine debris on land and in the water at up to 20 sites around the island;

2) Sorting and identifying marine debris;

3) Comparing the amount and type of debris at sites with high and low numbers of tourists;

4) Learning about Balinese cultural practices and what they might mean for marine debris management;

5) Examining different marine debris management strategies around the island;

6) Interviewing local people to discover their attitudes to marine debris.

There may also be opportunities to visit a coral re-seeding project, talk with people studying the impact of marine debris and plastics on sea turtles and meet with NGOs in Bali who are working on issues involving marine debris

ACCOMMODATION AND TRANSPORTThe team will travel by bus around the island to different locations in order to survey different beaches and also to visit some local cultural attractions. The team will travel in local outrigger canoes when water transport is required.

As the team will be on the move suitable accommodation will be found around the island but will vary depending on proximity to tourist centres. However all accommodation will be clean, quiet, comfortable and safe.
