    THE LINDN COLLECTIONke Lindn (1927-2013)

ke Lindn, who passed away on the 13th May 2013 at the age of 86, was a man of international stature having served for a number of years and

eventually becoming Assistant General Director ofGATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade), now the World Trade Organisation. He was born in Stockholm but grew up in Karlskoga where his father was a director at A B Bofors. His father travelled widely all overthe world and brought back different coins from each country he visited. This is what first inspired kes passion for coin collecting. After taking degrees in law and economics, he joined the Swedish Foreign Office and served in Paris, Rio and Frankfurt before moving tothe GATT Secretariat in Geneva where he became the leading expert in the international trade systems.

Being a somewhat reserved, almost shy and certainly modest person, ke was immediately popular with people from all walks of life. Hisregular drivers appreciation of the man was such that he described him as the epitome of a true gentleman. After taking his pensionin the mid-1990s when GATT becameWTO, he became a political consultant and was employed by both the EU and the United Nationsas well as individual countries including Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Jordan and Sri Lanka.

In his limited spare time ke enjoyed spending time with his younger brother and sister and their families, as well as a circle of closefriends. He also gave legal advice and financial support to various good works and charities freely, which was typical of the man.

It is a wonder that ke ever found the time to devote to his coin collecting hobby, but time he did find, or make as the case may be, andwhat is more he went about it in the most methodical and single-minded fashion. One could say that he became a more accomplished

numismatist than many fulltime professionals. His numismatic interests were not merely wide ranging, he actually set about collectingevery type coin since 1850, as per the Yeoman catalogue, from every country in the world. Being the true collector that he was, kewould consider any coin that was missing from his collection in whichever condition available. However, when it came to the very rarestitems, he did not hesitate to acquire them in top condition at whatever the price. To this end, ke even went so far as to purchase gradedcoins in plastic slab holders, which was anathema to him because he could not enjoy handling them in the same way he was used towith coins that were free. Such coins included, for example, the Korean 20-Won and 5-Won of 1906 and 1908 as well as numerousJapanese and American gold coins. His German States gold and silver collection, which is about as complete as one would wish for, bears testament to the methodical way that he went about putting together his collection.

This auction includes several coins from the Lindn collection and these are all marked as such in the lot description footnote.

12 Ubayd Allah b. Ziyad,Silver Drachm, KRMAN-NAR =Kirman? 61h, obvportrait bust of Khusraw II right, toright downwards PIRUJ/PEROZ AUBITALA I-ZIYATAN= victorious Ubayd Allah bin Ziyad, 2.71g (Walker,Arab Sasanian, p.66:I.32, the first time of publication). Edge expertly shaved, otherwise well-centered, good very fine,of the highest rarity and the greatest historical importance. 8000-10,000

This is perhaps the earliest Islamic commemorative coin. It appears to be the only occasion where the word piruj/peroz is seen on anexample of Ubayd Allahs otherwise abundant coinage, most of which was struck in Basra where he served as governor of Iraq for theCaliph Yazid I b. Muawiya. The accession of Yazid I caused strong divisions within the early Muslim community. Several very importantleaders refused to give him their allegiance, the most significant of whom were the Prophets grandson al-Husayn bin Ali and Abd Allahal-Zubayr, later to be the counter-caliph. Although al-Husayn was advised to remain in Makka he set out to lead his followers in Iraq.Yazid responded by ordering Ubayd Allah, his governor of Iraq, to deal firmly with the anticipated arrival of al-Husayn. This challengeresulted in the tragedy of Kerbala on the 10 thof Muharram 61h, when al-Husayn and most of his followers met a bloody end, thus sealingthe division between Sunni and Shia Islam, which lasts until this day.KIRMAN-NAR is usually read as Narmashir, a small and insignificant town south of Bamm in eastern Iran. Some have questioned thereading of this mint because more plausible alternatives could be deduced from the Pahlawi script. Album suggests that the suffix couldbe read as WAR, which in his opinion and that of this cataloguer could locate the mint in the important town of Bardasir, which was thencapital of the province.

This Dirham was struck by order of Zubayda bint Abi Jafar b. al-Mansur, wife of Harun al-Rashid and mother of Muhammad al-Amin, at a

palace compound probably on an island near Baghdad. It is, in all likelihood, the earliest coin struck by authority of a woman in the historyof Islam. The issuance of this coin is directly connected to the matter of the caliphal succession. In 175h al-Rashid designated his second, butpurely Hashimid, son Muhammad al-Amin as his heir. In the succeeding years it became clear that his eldest, but slave-born son, Abdallahal-Mamun, was better suited to rule than his younger brother. In 183h al-Rashid therefore designated al-Mamun as the second heir to thethrone. While Zubayda had been a kindly stepmother to al-Mamun, her over-arching ambition was to see that al-Amin, the only heir to herbody, became caliph after al-Rashids death. One can easily imagine that this imperious and powerful lady determined to make her positionunmistakably clear by issuing this coin as a sharp reminder that she was the mother of the heir.

As Miles states in his note on the Dirham of Muhammad b.Bayhas, Dimashq 198h, The numismatic record . is valuableelaboration of the somewhat vague accounts in the chronicles. about Damascus at the turn of the (3 rd) century hijri. Mileswas speaking about the series of Dirhams struck by Ibn-Bayhas

in Damascus between 198h and 209h. Jundwas the title given toa military district. It would appear that for a time during the year200h, while Ibn-Bayhas held the city of Damascus, his power wasbeing challenged elsewhere by the otherwise unknown Umara. The name Umara is clear on this coin, but it appears to be missingor illegible on Lowicks piece and the name of his father cannot beread on either coin with any degree of certainty.

265 A Hoard of Abbasid and Tribal Copper Fulus (approx 346), from the Region of al-Bahrayn,struck in the middleof the 2ndCentury of the Hijra era, of a fabric and style unlike any other contemporary copper from Syria, Iraqor Iran; the hoard comprises three principal types: first were the official issues of local Abbasid governors ata time when the central government was trying to exert control over the region, the second bear governorsnames and dates with the inscription li-ahl al-Bahrayn, for the people of al-Bahrayn, which is also found onFulus from the mint of al-Basra dated 144 AH, the third type was struck on irregularly cut, wafer-thin flansbearing various signs and words on one face and usuallyMuhammad rasul Allah on the other; rather thanhaving any religious or political significance these signs appear to identify ownership of an animal or object, similar to a tribal personal brand (wasmplural wusum). Generally about fine and extremely rare, a very interestinggroup. (lot)

    30,000-35,000

A tribal coinage of this kind probably met an economic need for small change in an area chronically short of cash, and the phrase li-ahl ...would have established it as being public property rather than privately owned by a tribe or clan. One of the earliest Islamic mints to beestablished on the shores of the Arabian Gulf was that of al-Bahrayn, a province which encompassed the island of Bahrain and the mainlandareas around Jubayl and Qatif in eastern Saudi Arabia. Most of the coins are rather crude because they were usually struck on thin flans byinexpert workmen, and a considerable number are either double-struck or overstruck on earlier issues. This is an important group of coinswhich provides a fresh insight into the monetary history of the Arabian peninsula. This hoard was acquired by an ARAMCO employee working in Saudi Arabia in the late 1950s.

The names of the Sultan Kaykawus II appear on the obverseand that of the Abbasid Caliph al-Mustasim on the reverse ofthis Dinar. It is an unpublished piece that is unusual in thatit lacks both mint name and date, which suggests that it wasintended for presentation to members of the Sultans court. Itis uncertain to which of the two reigns of Kaykawus the coinbelongs as al-Mustasim was on the throne during both.
