THE ARTS Gifted and Talented Visual Art This course is compulsory course for Gifted and Talented Visual Art students and is not available to general students. It is a studio-based course that ranges across all the major disciplines and encompasses activities in support of the Gifted and Talented Program. Urban Art Urban Art is an exciting and hands-on visual art course where you will learn new skills such as designing your own letter style, screen printing and a variety of painting styles. This creative and expressive form of art encourages students to look at street art and graphic design for inspiration. You will design and print your own t-shirt logos, paint skateboard decks and learning stencilling techniques. No previous art experience is required – just a love for modern graffiti and self-expression is needed.

Photography

Year 9

You will learn the basics of digital photography, including how to use the features and functions of a digital camera and understanding the elements of composition to capture and create better photographs. You will be introduced to Photoshop to learn how to enhance and manipulate images. Photographic projects include: Elements of Composition, various Photoshop workshops, Portrait Photography and Urban Photography (excursion to Perth City).

Year 10

Expanding on the digital photography techniques learned in Year 9, you will discover more technical features and functions of DSLR cameras and develop more advanced skills in Photoshop to create visually compelling images. Photographic projects in Year 10 are focused around exploring student interests and expressing your own creativity. Some projects include: Action Sequence Photography, Personal Photo Series, Magazine Cover and Surrealism. (You do not need to have completed Year 9 Photography to enrol)

Music Production and Performance (Digital Music) Year 9

This course has both a classroom and an instrumental component. The classroom component will include a variety of music activities, including listening, composing, music theory and looking at how the various aspects of music have developed and how they interact. The practical component will include tuition in instrumental music provided by the Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS). You will be required to participate in activities before and after school. You will have a number of performance opportunities during the year and, later, will showcase your talents in ensemble groups as they are developed over time.

Year 10

This course will give you the opportunity to learn the elements of music theory to develop, design and create personal music pieces. You will develop your aural, composition, arrangement, responding and evaluation skills through digital music. You will create your own digital music using free software such as GarageBand or industry standard programs and, in the process, learn important musical theory skills such as hearing and aural memory, tempo, musical scales, chords, keys and time signatures. The performance part of the course will involve recording an instrument or vocal melody in in your musical creations. You will also listen and respond to works of their peers and other musical pieces from a range of different styles and genres.

Specialist Dance This course runs as part of the Approved Specialist Program in Dance at Balcatta Senior High School. Students are expected to continue from the Year 8 course into Year 9 Dance. The Specialist Dance program is heavily participation-based, and as such, a high level of class attendance is required. There are also three compulsory out-of-school performances each year which form a major part of the assessment program. Only available to selected Dance students or by audition. Drama

Do you enjoy acting and performing? Do you yearn for the bright lights, the stage, the glamour of the theatre and the movies? Then this unit is all about you. Learn the basics of acting, voice production, improvisation and stage management. You will be involved in creating and performing using a wide range of theatrical techniques while learning the fundamentals of drama. In Semester Two you will learn how to develop your acting prowess even further. You will explore the backstage, lighting, make-up and audio techniques while learning the fundamentals of playwriting and scripting. This is your chance to really develop your acting skills to a high level.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Outdoor Recreation

Year 9

This unit is designed to develop knowledge, self-management skills, interpersonal skills and movement skills in outdoor recreational environments. You will learn in the contexts of mountain biking, boogie boarding, expedition and camping skills, orienteering, bush walking, archery and table tennis.

Year 10

This course will provide you with opportunities to develop skills and attitudes for recreational activities in a variety of situation and environments, such as, surf awareness and surf skiing in the ocean, rock climbing, camping skills and bush walking in national parks, and the local bush lands. This course will also enable you to develop safety skills in first aid and resuscitation and recreational skills in the areas of ten-pin bowling or squash and beach fishing will also be developed. You must be a competent swimmer (this will be assessed in class).

Year 9

You will start the course by learning the rules and developing warm up activities before moving to outdoor soccer. You will focus on developing specific skills to develop your movement, interpersonal and self-management skills. Participation in class activities and inter-school games will improve your game playing techniques.

Year 10

This course will develop your basic and advanced soccer game skills and referee skills. You will be exposed to a variety of soccer games, including various indoor soccer rules and other soccer orientated games, with the focus on specific strategies and tactics and injury prevention.

Electronic Presentations This course is an introduction to presentation and animation software. You will be taught skills to manipulate text, images and audio. These skills will then be applied to creating digital animations and editing digital audio clips, incorporating music, sound effects and voice over. The course then culminates in using graphics and audio to create an interactive animated computer game using Scratch coding.

Coding and Robotics You will be introduced to the concept of structured programming using a range of programming languages such as Scratch, Python and Java. These coding skills will then be applied to programming autonomous Edison® robots. Computer Controlled Robotics In this course, you will have the opportunity to design, build and code robots to address real-life engineering challenges. You will be taught mechanical engineering concepts such as gear ratios and magnitude of force using pulleys. The robots will be coded to respond to stimulus from the environment and operate stepper motors to activate mechanisms that carry out a task. This is a practical subject suitable for students who are interested in digital technology, coding and introduction-level mechanical engineering concepts.

Flavours and Fashion The Styling and Fashion part of the course focuses on textiles, their care, selection and construction. You will construct articles and garments for family members and yourself and you will be encouraged to experiment with fabric textures and colours to achieve a totally individual fashion statement. The International Flavours part of the course will provide you with the opportunity to prepare and savour foods from many countries. You will be exposed, through foods, to the customs of people from all over the world and will investigate the meal patterns and staple foods of different cultures. You will have the opportunity to devise recipes typical of the culture.

Styling and Fashion

This subject looks at clothes in fashion, what you wear, your colours, brands and how to style clothes for you. Styling and Fashion is a practical subject where clothes are recycled, accessories made and style is outlined. This is a fun, interactive and practical subject suitable for anyone interested in fashion, what they wear and how to make the most of their clothes and budget
