Some Facts About Pakistani FoodOne thing that we Pakistanis pride ourselves over, no matter which part of the world we are in, is food. Pakistani cuisine is the lesser-known food of the sub-continent and is rich in tradition, full of marvelous and diverse dishes. Pakistan was created in 1947 when India gained freedom from British colonial rule and was partitioned and has a predominantly Muslim population. The blend of In-dian, Far Eastern and Middle Eastern cooking techniques creates a distinc-tive mix of complex f lavours. How-ever, what makes the food unique is the experience that is associated with it. There are certain habits that almost all of us foodies have been known to have, in creating such ex-periences. Pakistan is generally re-garded as a bread culture, with meals being eaten with the right hand and naan bread, roti or paratha used to scoop up curries and accompani-ments as is the practice in Muslim culture. There are many dishes such as aloo bhujia, daal, palak paneer etc. which are purely vegetarian. Howev-er, a real Pakistani would believe that all vegetarian dishes are either side dishes or simply an alternative to sal-ad. A dish with meat is a Real meal, since it has some substance in it, such as beef, chicken or mutton. Chaawal or rice has many different forms as well. There is the plain boiled rice

which goes perfectly with any gra-vy. There is pulao or pilaf which in-cludes onions and meat or vegetables. Sweets are abundant, using generous amounts of ghee, sugar and nuts such as pistachios and almonds. Halva (meaning sweet) is one of the most popular sweets and can be made with f lour or semolina but can also be made with carrot or pumpkin. Many sweets are also infused with fragrant essences like rosewater. If you think that it ends with dessert, you have another thing coming. After every-one has had dessert and settled back in to relax, trays of tea come gush-ing in. These include black tea, green tea, kashmiri pink tea, doodh patti and for a small minority, even coffee. Munn phalli, or peanuts, are a clas-sic winter time snack for most Paki-stanis. It has been an age old activity whereby peanut shells are peeled in front of a fire and enjoyed straight out of the shells. The act itself has al-most become a therapeutic one, since the pre-peeled peanuts don’t seem to give that sort of satisfaction. This is also what makes them more popular than any other dry fruit in the winter months. All in all, Pakistanis associ-ate food not just with taste, but with experiences. Whether it is eating by hand, or peeling before eating, every experience enriches the taste of the food, and the story that goes with it.

Do a dinner crawl. Pub crawls are fun for couples, friends and also families with older kids. For an exciting twist that stretches your dollars and lets you taste food from several spots before you get too full, try a dinner crawl. Eat apps at one restaurant, mains at another and dessert at another.

Go on a mini getaway. You don’t need to go very far to enjoy a vacation – exploring a Cana-dian city over a summer weekend is great way to treat yourself to a holiday. Whether it’s checking out the museums in Toronto or the parks in Vancouver, there’s something for everyone. 1. Nepali food is NOT Indian food. A lot of it comes from the fact that most Nepali restaurants offer Indian/Himalayan/Nepali cui-sine together which makes it even more confusing for people. 2. Raw instant noodles are a pop-ular after-school snack. Tiraura and churpi are also pretty popular 'Nepali candies'; titaura slightly reminds of sour straws (except that tiraura can be spicy, sweet, sour

and typically made with tamarind, hog plum, mango, preserved lem-ons) and honestly, I have no clue how to describe churpi. It's hard-ened cheese that is hard as a rock and has a strong cheesy f lavour. 3. Baking is not a norm. Ovens and microwaves are almost nonex-istent in most households although it's starting to change now. A pres-sure cooker is Nepali’s best friend!

THREE THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT NEPALI FOOD

Nepalese Whole Wheat Steamed Veg Momos Recipeby Anupama Paliwal

Nepalese Whole Wheat Steamed Veg Momos are very popular street food in Nepal and in the Northern part of In-dia. Momos are bril-liant as a snack, but they can also make a light and pleasant meal for any time of the day. Prep time 10 Min Cook time 30 Min Total time 40 Min Serves 14-15 INGREDIENTS: For The Dough: • Whole Wheat Flour – 2 Cup • Oil – 1 Tsp • Salt – 1/2 Tsp• Milk – 4 Tbsp + Water For Kneading Soft DoughFor Filling: • Carrots, Grated – 1 Cup • Cabbage, Grated – 1 Cup • Bell Pepper, Chopped – 5 Tbsp • Spring Onion Greens – 1 Tbsp • White Vinegar – 2 Tsp • Ginger-Garlic Paste – 1 Tsp • Chili Sauce – 1 Tsp • Soy Sauce – 1 Tsp • Ginger Garlic Paste

– 1 Tbsp • Salt To Taste • Black Pepper– 1 Tsp

INSTRUCTIONS:For Making The Dough:1. Combine all-pur-pose f lour, salt, and oil in a mixing bowl. Mix well. 2. Add milk and mix well again. 3. Now add enough water to make a smooth dough, just like the chapati dough. 4. Cover it and let it rest for 30 minutes. For Filling: 1. Add shredded cab-bage to a bowl. Add salt and mix well. 2. Squeeze out the excess water. (You can use this nutritious water for kneading chapati dough) 3. Add shredded carrots, bell pepper, spring onion greens and mix well. 4. Now add the chili sauce, the soy sauce, vinegar, ginger-garlic paste, salt, and mix well. 5. Now add black pepper and mix well again. 6. Stuffing is ready. For Making The

Dumplings: 1. Divide dough into 14-15 equal sized balls. Dust them with some dry f lour. 2. Roll each dough ball thin into about 3″ circle, or until almost translucent. 3. The edges should be thin. Roll all the balls. 4. Wet the edge with some water. 5. Place about 1 tbsp filling in the center. 6. Bring one edge and start pleating as shown in the video above. 7. Twist to seal the dumpling. Stuff the rest of the dough balls in the same way. 8. Heat water in a steamer or a pan. 9. Cover the steaming basket with lettuce or cabbage. 10. Arrange the mo-mos on the steaming basket. (Make sure to have some space between them, so they do not stick to each other.) 11. Place the steam-ing basket over the steamer or pan and steam for about 10 minutes. 12. Serve with spicy momos chutney.

5 tips to get the most from your next doctor’s visit(NC) Summer and

fall are the perfect time to schedule your next physical or medi-cal appointment, since doctor’s offices are of-ten quieter than during the cold and f lu-rid-dled cooler months. To make sure everything you need is covered, follow these tips from Health Canada:

1.Be active and open. It’s important to be honest and upfront about your symptoms, no matter how insig-nificant or embarrass-ing they may seem.

2.Keep a written record. It’s important to tell all health-care p r ov id e r s — i n clu d -ing doctors, nurses, and physician’s as-sistants—about your medical history and how you are or were being treated for any conditions. They will want to know if you have any allergies to food, medication or

o t h e r t h i n g s . It’s help-ful to keep a w r i t -ten list of your h e a l t h c o n d i -tions and medications that you can easily share.

3.Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to speak up during your appointment. Ask questions to make sure that you understand your condition, diag-nosis, treatment and recovery. If you don’t ask questions, your health-care provider will think that you have understood ev-erything that they have told you.

4.Request re-sources. If you still don’t understand your health-care provider’s explanation, ask them to explain it in more

detail, possibly using pictures or brochures. If the health-care pro-vider isn’t available to help, you should be able to talk to an as-sistant or a nurse. If no one else is available, see if you can schedule another appointment to continue your talk.

5.Report adverse reactions. It’s im-portant to report any side effects to health products, includ-ing medical devices, medications and natu-ral health products, to your health-care team and Health Canada, so that they can be ad-dressed.

Smart ways to keep your cottage safe

(NC) Cottages are a haven where you can relax, unwind and recharge — your home away from the city to run off to on weekends and during the summer months. But like your home, there is maintenance required

to ensure eve r y th i ng is in proper working or-der to keep the place b e a u t i f u l and safe.

E l e c t r i -cal safety. Whether it’s an electrical outlet in the b o a t h o u s e or bath-

room, water and electricity don’t mix. To avoid a potential electrical hazard or risk of shock, ensure you have ground fault circuit interrupt-ers (GFCI) for all outlets that sup-

ply power to outdoor appliances and tools, especially near water. For out-door outlets exposed to the elements, a cover plate marked “Extra Duty” will keep water and debris out and help prevent electrical shocks. When thinking about your kitchen and bathroom, GFCI protection is also required for outlets located within 1.5 metres from a sink.

Summer weather. Weather can be unpredictable, and at the cottage it’s important to have both ceiling fans and heaters installed properly. Ceil-ing fans add a breezy feel during the hot and sticky summer nights and require a specific junction box when being installed. This provides addi-tional support so the fan is secure. To keep warm on those chilly nights,

make sure the furnace or baseboard heaters are properly installed by a licensed electrical contractor. When using a space heater, ensure that it’s placed away from other objects since they can present a fire hazard if left unattended.

Hire the right expert. Working with the right professional will en-sure your cottage is an enjoyable and safe retreat. If you’re hiring some-one to do electrical work, they must be a licensed electrical contractor. They understand the Ontario Elec-trical Safety Code, are licensed by the Electrical Safety Authority of Ontario, and can ensure all electrical components are considered. Find or verify a contractor near you at find-acontractor.esasafe.com.

Should you stop taking that medication?

(NC) Many of us have been tempted to stop or change a medical treat-ment on our own. But whether that’s because you’re feeling better, think the treatment isn’t working, are wor-ried about its cost or are having un-

comfortable side effects, stopping the use of a medication or medical device on your own can be danger-ous. It can even make your condition worse.

It’s always important to remember that if you stop taking your medica-tion or using your device before you are supposed to, you may not get its full effect. For example, if you stop taking antibiotics early, you may get sick again. Or if you remove a cast or brace before a fracture has fully healed, the bone can break or heal

improperly.

Instead of stopping your medica-tion or not using your device, talk to your health-care provider before making any changes. Find out what to expect, as some medications and devices may take more time to make a difference. They may change your dose, change your medication or de-vice to a different kind or give you suggestions on how to feel better.

You can also talk to your health-care provider if you don’t have enough

money for your medication or de-vice. They may be able to change your medication to a generic brand that costs less. Some pharmacies, drug companies and medical device companies have programs for reduc-ing the cost for patients.

Practice talking to your healthcare provider and pharmacist about the medications and devices that you use, so that you can make decisions together to help you feel well.

Surviving the family road trip

(NC) Looking to take the family on an excit-ing road trip this sum-mer? Here are four easy tips from parenting ex-pert Maureen Dennis to help you not just sur-vive the trek, but also ensure everyone has a great time and makes incredible memories together. 1. Plan perfect. Plan-ning can be as simple or complicated as you like. Try a destination-based plan, meaning that each day you pick a target destination. On the first day, everyone is fresh, energized and very excited about get-ting away. Use this en-ergy to get as far as you can on day one.

2. Explore your own backyard. If you’ve never done a family road trip, start small. Choose a destination two to four hours away and give your family a chance to get used to being in the car for extended periods of time. This is especially important if you have young children. 3. Give the whole fam-ily a heads up. Speak to your children ahead of your trip and let them know what to expect. You can talk about what you will see along the way, what they can do in the car to stay busy and about managing their liquids

to limit the number of bathroom breaks.

4. Fully charged fun. Though road trips are tons of fun, it can be challenging to keep the littlest members of the family entertained in the car between stops. With the new Hyun-dai Palisade, parents no longer need to miti-gate arguments about device chargers. The SUV houses seven USB chargers so the whole family can be plugged in for the entire road trip. Plus, three rows of seating means that everyone can comfort-ably spread out and en-joy the ride.

How to get your kids to disconnect on a family vacay(NC) Going on a holiday with the family is about spending time together, not time on the phone or tablet. To help

your kids enjoy the moment, try these tips:

Get a real camera. Ev-eryone wants to take photos of their memories, but you can stay away from the smartphone by going old-school. Older kids will enjoy learning to use a DSLR and feel like pho-tography pros, while younger ones will appre-ciate the instant gratification of a polaroid.

Plan some-

thing unique. For-get the basic road trip and organize an ad-venture. Think surf lessons, a Game of Thrones walking tour or white-water rafting. With Marriott Bon-voy, the hotel chain’s loyalty program, you can quickly and easily book your hotel room and once-in-a-lifetime experiences like these while earning points and getting the best rates all through Mar-riott.com.

Create a travel book. Your kids will need something to keep them busy during downtime. Instead of screen time play-ing a game or watch-ing a movie, work on a scrapbook together before leaving where they can sketch what they see, journal about their experiences and eventually stick photos on.
