Baisakhi Celebration The little children of MI M III of Shalom Hills School celebrated “Baisakhi”, the harvest festival of Punjab on 11th April’14 with great joi de vivre. With the objective of teaching the young students the significance of this festival, the teachers discussed with the students how this festival is important in a farmer’s life. It was explained to them that the farmers harvest their rabi crops on this day and that they offer the first part of the crops to God as thanksgiving. The children came dressed to the school in colourful attire and let loose a riot of colours in the classrooms. World Health Day celebrated in M I – M III on 7th April’14

The children of MI - MIII at Shalom Hills School celebrated “The World Health Day” on 7th April, which is celebrated all across the globe as World Health Day the same day.

With the objectives of developing healthy eating habits among the young scholars and teaching them about the balanced diet, the teachers initiated a discussion on Healthy food and the importance of healthy food. The tiny tots were encouraged to answer questions such as “Why do we need to eat fruits and vegetables every day “and “Where do you get fruits and vegetables from?

Similarly, the children were informed about the bad consequences of eating unhealthy or junk food like doughnuts, pizzas, burgers, rolls, wraps, frankies, noodles, French fries, etc.

The children were asked to bring a picture of healthy food and junk food and with the help of the teachers, they were able to identify and make a collage of healthy food vs junk foods. During the activity, the teachers educated them about what is a balanced diet as well.

Earlier, the children had been asked to bring any healthy snack which was shared with their peer group by all of them during snack time.

Report on orientation for parents of MIII student’s 29th march 2014.

Beginning of the new session with an orientation program full of information & knowledge was conducted for the parents of students of all the classes of MIII on 29th March 2014.

The one hour session was inclusive of the detailed description of the curriculum to be followed throughout the year and even the methodologies to be applied. With the help of a description Power Point Presentation, the parents were educated about the learning cycle and pattern for their kids which will be followed throughout the year.

Reinforcement of basic guidelines and resolution to general queries was also done by the teachers. A positive response from the parents could be seen as they shared that they were feeling more equipped with the knowledge shared with them.

And with this we start the new session full of knowledge, learning and development.

Shalom Hills International School celebrated its Graduation Day on 8th March’14

The graduation day function of Shalom Hills International School was a clear departure from the traditional cap-and-gown ceremony; the function was a lavishly and lovingly mounted cultural programme to mark the kindergarteners’ crossover into formal schooling. It was attended by a galaxy of distinguished guests and Shalom Presidency team. In a touching function, the little ones of M III were a picture study of innocence and confidence as they came into arclight on the stage to perform and graduate, in equal turns. The day’s programme was a delightful potpourri of prayer songs, foot-tapping numbers, speeches and of course, mesmerizing dance sequels. The parents and other members of the august gathering were immeasurably moved when the little cherubs paid befitting tribute to their moms and dads through a poignant number. A complete thrall was cast upon the audience when the young students paid a musical reverence to God followed by homage to their motherland through emotive prayer and patriotic song-dance extravaganza.

Youthful speakers from kindergarten thanked their school and parents for being their pillars of strength as they move up another step in their academic expedition. The resplendent

costumes, brilliant choreography and artistic stage props offered a visual treatise for the gathering. The graduation ceremony was a solemn and stately affair tinged with nostalgia as the misty-eyed parents watched the young scholars dressed in black gowns and holding their scroll of honor walk up the aisle and stand on the stage amidst subdued lights, beautiful prayer songs, and rendition of shlokas. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the senior graders put a hard-hitting and powerful dance-drama ‘Towards a Brighter Future’ extolling the transition of women from a hapless woman of yore to a savior of her honour. The school paid a salute to the moms, grandmoms and the women all over the world.

In her address to the gathering, Dr. Lilly George, the Founder-Managing Director thanked the parents for their trust in entrusting their most precious treasure in the care of the school. Dr. Lilly George who is fondly called ‘Mother Darling’ by the tiny tots of the school heaped praise upon the kindergarteners lovingly calling their performances ‘magical’. The function ended on a high note with the grand finale and Shalom Anthem.

The main aim of this activity is to made children aware of animals and gave them opportunity to speak before the class on animals .Different kinds of toy animals were brought in the class and everyone pretended like animals. Teacher asked questions where lion stayed, what is his sound and so on. Answers were given enthusiastically and everyone participated. Even children talked about their pet animals who stay with them at their home like dog and rabbit and the way they take care of them and love them.

Report on sweet corn stuffing in tomato basket

Prideens of MI & MII classes tested their culinary skills in school while making Stuffed Tomato Basket. All Children participated enthusiastically. The students were called one by one to pour sweetcorn in a bowl and mixed it up with salt and ketch up. Teacher scooped out the pulp of tomato, sweetcorn was stuffed in tomato by children and lemon was squeezed over it. Sweet

corn stuffing tomato basket was placed in plate and was decorated with lemon and corn. All the children relished it together.

Skills development:

New words were learnt like: stuffing, sweetcorn, tomato basket. Motor development took place while mixing the ingredients.

SHADOW DISCOVERY MIII

A shadow is formed if an opaque object blocks a path of light. This is because light travels in straight lines. Light cannot bend around an object so it forms a shadow. Basically shadow starts

where the light is blocked.

To explore the same concept further, Teachers divided the class into four groups and called the groups one by one. All of them were asked to stand in different postures under light so that

they were able to see their shadows differently. After seeing the shadow, teacher explained them about the light and different postures of shadow in which they were standing. Pictures were clicked by the teacher when children were seeing their shadows. They recognized the sun as a source of light and were able to identify their shadows. All the children participated enthusiastically and enjoyed together.

The main aim of the activity is to teach children foundational understanding of light by enabling them to explore how light interacts with different objects and to discover relationships between light and shadow.

Write Up on Basant Panchami MI, MII & MIII

Basant Panchami is one of the seasonal festivals which mark the arrival of spring season.

It bids farewell to winter and relieves us of biting cold waves of the winter.

We have sufficient reason to celebrate such a seasonal festival which is the pulse of all animated beings. That is why we celebrate Basant Panchami with great zeal and excitement. The day of Basant Panchami is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. In the villages yellow mustard

bloom in the fields gives a beautiful look to the fields. Fairs are held all over India on this day. Our Junior Shalomites to celebrated the festival with equal zest & enthusiasm. They were told as on this day people dance out of joy and they apply Tilak on each other’s forehead, our junior Shalomites did the same.

Children came dressed up in yellow color; they brought colorful kites to mark the occasion. They were told about the importance of the traditions related to the festival with the onset of spring and how we relate it to the veneration of goddess Saraswati through talks and PPTs and that on this day we worship the deity of knowledge.

The kids also participated in the kite race very enthusiastically.

Value Imparted

The kids learnt about the traditions we follow in India such as community harmony, sharing and enjoying together.

Report on Martyr’s Day 30th Jan 2014

January 30 is marked as the Martyrs' Day. It is an annual observance in India to honor all the freedom fighters who gave up their lives in service of the Nation. January 30 is also the date when Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi was shot by an assassin. Martyrs day is dedicated to all the brave people who sacrificed themselves on the altar of freedom. Earlier, January 26 was the somber reminder of all the martyrs but later on, 30th January was declared as the new Martyrs’ Day. Today all Children on MII & MIII Classes maintained two minutes silence to pay tribute to the Martyrs. Martyrs day is dedicated to all the brave people who sacrificed themselves on the altar of freedom. Children came dressed up as freedom fighters like Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose ,Bhagat Singh, Mahatama Gandhi and spoke few lines on them. The class teacher showed the children a ppt on martyr’s .At the end of the day the children were bursting with the emotion of patriotism.

Report on Pretend Play (MI)

Sub: Environment studies

The main aim of this activity was to make children aware with the names of the farm animals and farmer. All children participated in pretend play enthusiastically. They played the role by making the sound of the animals like and spoke few lines about the same. Children also pretended to be like a farmer and spoke few lines before the class. Children also acted according to the character they were dressed up like which helped them to develop the language skills. They showed their love towards animals and learnt to take care of them. All the children enjoyed the activity by reciting the rhyme “Old Macdonald had a farm E-A-E-A-O” in the end.

Value Inculcated:

Learnt about the animals and their work besides sounds. Learnt about farmer who produces wheat, rice and pulses for us.

Report on Crunchy Topping (Community Kitchen MIII) held on 28th Jan 2014

Cooking is a fantastic activity to do with children. They can learn and practice a whole range of skills and it gives them an understanding of food and where it all comes from. But even more importantly, it is one of the most fun , therapeutic and bonding activities which we can do with

them.

Today our MIII Shalomities enjoyed a cooking activity .Children got few Monaco biscuits, boiled cubed potatoes, sev and some seasoning. They placed the biscuits in a plate and kept a layer of boiled potatoes over it and they spread some sev on it. The crunchy topping was now ready. It was a very delicious & children relished it. They also learnt about the nutritional value of potatoes, as they are rich in starch which is very good for children.

Overall it was a fun filled as activity with some educational value as well

Report on Tri-colour tikka activity:-

The main aim of this activity was to teach children the concept of “Tri colour” as it is related to our national flag .

Materials required:-Paneer,capscicum,Chinese carrot (orange colour),toothpick,chaatmasala and tomato sauce.

After collecting all the ingredients, teachers asked the children to come and arrange the tikkas according to tri-colour basis. That is, at first, capsicum then a piece of paneer and at the top carrot.

Children made tikkas and added chaatmasala and tomato sauce for garnishing. They used a toothpick to eat the tikkas.

They enjoyed the activity and ate the tikkas with great fun.

Write up Republic Day celebrated on 26th January

On 26th January every year we celebrate Republic day. It is a day to remember when India’s constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, completing the country’s transition towards becoming an independent republic. The constitution gave India’s citizen the power to govern themselves by choosing their own government.

Republic Day was celebrated with plenty of gusto in our school. A cultural program was held to instill the spirit of national pride and love for the country among students. They were dressed-up as their favorite freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Jhansi Ki Rani Laxmi Bai, etc. and narrated few lines about their favorite freedom fighter. Students not only enjoy the day but go home being proud and happy Indians.

Republic Day is celebrated as National Holiday in India along with Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti.

Experiment To Show That Light Travels in a Straight Path

This January, The prideens of MIII classes are experiencing the presence of ‘Light’. To explore the matter further, a fun and simple physics experiment was conducted by children, with the help of their respective teachers to understand that light travels in a straight line.

The teacher started the experiment with 3 card boards with a hole in the centre and placing them in a straight line with the help of clay. A torch was placed on the other side of the card board. Children saw the light travelling through one card to the other and on the wall when all the cards were placed in straight line. They also realized that if any one of the cards was displaced, they were not able to see the light.

With this experiment children playfully discovered that light travels in a straight line when there is nothing to hurdle it from its course.

Let’s Make Crunchy Crackers

Our little chefs from MI had joyful experience while making their own delicacy of Crunchy Crackers on 12th Dec 2013. With the help of their teachers, they were able to put lovely combination toppings made of cheese & diced vegetables. They also shared their crackers with their peer group from other classes and relished it together. Some of the kids were also seen to tell the advantages of vegetables used in the toppings.

Developments covered- Language development, fine motor (pincer grip), social development & self confidence.

Teacher-Child Relationship Sensitization conducted for MI-MIII Teachers on 7th Dec’13

The teachers of MI-MIII attended workshop on Teacher- Child Relationship Sensitization held in Pre-Primary Wing on 7th Dec 2013. It was conducted by Ms. Nandita Prakash, Head – Pre-Primary who covered the following areas during the course of the workshop:

1. Basic needs of children namely - sense of security, hygiene, playfulness, comfort ability, age-appropriate activities, warmth and approachability.

2. Ideas to be used during classroom practices to accommodate the above mentioned needs.

3. Sharing of teacher/class specific concerns and the solutions

4. Common practices to be followed in case of student misbehaviour or disturbance in the class

Apart from the above mentioned pointers, the teachers were also made to reflect upon their behaviour towards their colleagues and their equation with their co-workers. They were made to realize that a positive attitude and congenial working relationships go a long way in building up a close-knit team and developing a team spirit that helps all. As a corollary to this, the realization dawned on all the teachers present that as team members, they can benefit individually and collectively – they can help others and work more efficiently without expending extra energy, wasting time on unproductive work and realize their individual potential as well.

Mystery Bag

The main aim of the Mystery Bag Lesson is to develop stereognostic sense.

The stereognostic sense exercises enable the child to develop concepts by feeling objects and making recognition based on the feeling.

The materials required was a cloth bag containing about four or five everyday contrasting objects, such as a ball, soft toy, doll etc.

Teacher placed the bag flat on the table with the opening near children. After this teacher

asked students one by one to come and put their hand into the bag & choose one object to feel. Children felt the object while closing their eyes & described to the teacher what they felt about the object i.e. was the object soft, fluffy, hard etc.

Once the child assumed what he or she felt, said the object’s name loud: i.e. “I think this is a ball”. Then the child pulled the object out of the bag and if it was correct, teacher announced in affermative “Yes this is a ball.” And then the teacher told something about that particular object.

At the end of the day children enjoyed this activity a lot.

TEDDY PARTY

Toys are very important for kids and are essential to help with their learning and growing process.It is a very common and active mode for Pretend Play.

Some kids have always found their teddy bear to be the dearest companion. They care for

these toys and think of them as one of their own. They would eat, play and even sleep with the teddy as it allows them to escape into their fairy tale magical world side.

To show their love for teddy, a small class party was organized on 31st December 13. Last working day of 2013 for MI- MIII Shalomities. Children were asked to bring their teddy and join in party dress with and food. Each child spoke about their teddy. They relished party food together with their teddies and buddies.

Special Assembly MI B, MII E,F,G & H , Grade IV A & B

A bright day to celebrate life, when shining stars of MI B, MII- E,F,G , H and Grade IV A & B came on the stage to dazzle it with scintillating dance performances on the event of Special Assembly on 9th Nov 2013.

Eventful day it was, decorated with various themes of Prayer, friendship, fun, enjoyment and patriotism. The Junior & senior choir mesmerised the audience with their heart melting songs.

In all, a delightful experience for the audiences as well as the performers.

Winter Shopping Fun

Fairs and markets have a long history that started when humans felt a desire to exchange goods

and services. People would shop for goods at a weekly market in nearby towns. Then shops began to be permanently established. Shops became specialized in nature e.g. a bakery, a grocer. Then Supermarkets appeared. To enhance the learning in children in the same regard, an activity was organized for MIII Shalomities "Winter Shopping”. The idea was to introduce the barter system & currency in its simplest form. Children were asked to bring different food items related to winter season. With the help of their Respective class teacher, they arrange the things as they see in their nearby market or a supermarket. Now groups of children enacted as they were going to the supermarket. They were encouraged to read the label and the prices, to select what they like, what is good for their health and how they can help their mother while shopping. Children were excited and enjoyed shopping.

Christmas Celebration

Christmas is a sacred festival celebrated with great enthusiasm and gaiety all over the world.It is observed on 25th December to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It is largely characterized by exchanging gifts within families and friends and gifts brought by Santa Claus. In many countries, offices, schools and social communities organize Christmas

parties many days before Christmas Day.

People sing carol and visit neighborhood homes and exchange gifts.

Christmas pageants, which include the retelling of the story of the birth of Lord Jesus was performed by MIII Students on 24th Dec.

Celebrating the same occasion, Children of MI, MII & MIII came dressed up as Santa Clause & fairies for Christmas celebration. Special assembly on Christmas was presented for MIII Shalomities which started with carol singing and a skit was shown to children on birth of Jesus Christ performed by MIII Children.

Children enjoyed singing the Christmas carols and experienced that Christmas is a time of good cheer, meeting up with loved ones, forgiving enemies, spreading goodwill; warmth and generosity everywhere......love all.

"MERRY CHRISTMAS".

Making Breadcrumb Cake

Christmas is a time of good cheer, of meeting up with loved ones, forgiving enemies, spreading goodwill, warmth and generosity everywhere.......love all, hate none. Originally people used to eat a sort of porridge on Christmas Eve. Gradually, they began to put spices dried fruits, honey etc. in the porridge to make a special dish for Christmas Eve. Cakes were usually sent as part of a Christmas Hamper of food and presents and this way the tradition of Christmas cake, became known all over the world. Making of "Bread crumb cake" activity was organized for MI, MII & MIII Shalomities. Children were asked to get 2 slice of fruit bread or cake, small portion of nuts and gems for decoration. With the help of Respective class teacher, the activity was started. In a bowl, children came and crushed the fruit bread and nuts which they brought from home. And then chocolate sauce was used to mix and finally decorated with gems. Children relished the Bread crumb cake and enjoyed making it.

Report on Christmas Carol Singing done by MI,MII & MIII on 18th-19th Dec 2013

Carol was first sung in Europe thousands of years ago, but these were not Christmas carols. The word carol actually means dance or a song of praise and joy! Carols used to be written and sung during all four seasons, but only the tradition of singing them at Christmas has actually

survived.

Taking the same tradition forward, our Prideens of MI, MII & MIII Shalomities sung the carols with morning prayers spreading the importance of carols singing as joy and peace.

Bringing in the celestial vibrations in the air!

Aquarium Making

Establishing an aquarium offers student of all ages the opportunity to learn directly through experience. Caring for the aquarium kindles a sense of responsibility, sense of achievement, and a genuine desire to learn. An activity was organized for MIII shalomities “Making Aquarium”. Children were asked to get an empty transparent bottle and a tiny balloon. To start the activity half of the bottle was filled with water and to give a feel of aquarium, a drop of blue color was added. Through the nature walk children were encouraged to collect the pebbles which were being dropped in aquarium bottle. Then children were guided to blow the balloon and with the help of Respective Class

teachers they tied the knot. Balloon was pushed in the bottle to give a look of fish and children were really excited to take back their aquarium home. So, through this activity children learnt that heavier object always sink and lighter floats. They also learnt to be loving and caring towards mammals.

In going with the theme of the month M I children dressed up as their fruit spoke a sentence on what they had become. M III children showcased facts on animals.

SCIENCE PROJECT

Our M III children as a part of their EVS put up an astounding project on Our Living friends – Flora & Fauna”. They showed the interdependence of every creature in our Eco System.Children not only showed their linguistic proficiency but exhibited tremendous confidence as they faced a huge audience in such close distance.

SPINACH SALAD ACTIVITY (MII)

It was time to harvest our spinach. The teachers added sweet corn and apple with spinach and made lip smacking Spinach Salad. Children enjoyed as they learnt new words” tossing, dressing, mayonnaise.”

ONAM

The harvest festival of God’s Own Country was briefed to children. Children decorated their class rooms with flower carpet along with their teachers . A video clipping of Story of Mahabali was shown to M III children.

FRUIT SALAD ACTIVITY

Children of M I were excited to share the cut fruits with their friends. The teachers showed them step by step “Fruit salad “making. Children loved the taste of honey which was added to make the salad healthy.

NATURE WALK

To nurture a love for nature, M I & M II had gone on a nature walk. They went around and were excited to see worms, beetle, butterflies on the blooms, vegetables hanging from the creepers. They also collected twigs, pebbles, dry flowers and spoke about them.

SWAP SHOP

Children of M I, M II & M III had a pretend play activity. A fruit shop was erected in the campus. Children were all ready with sun glasses, hand bags & shopping bags. They enjoyed choosing & buying their favourite fruits and traded with fake currency.

PTM for all classes was held. M I & M II parents were informed about the Annual day. M III Parents were informed about the science project

ROLE PLAY- TEACHER

It was Teachers day on 5th September. Children expressed their love & affection by making cards and giving flowers to their teachers.

They were dressed up as their favourite teachers and posed for photographs.

SOWING OF SPINACH SEEDS Children of M II classes as a part of our Step Ahead Programme sowed spinach in the school. It was gratifying to see children diligently watering their garden and seeing their plants sprouting.

SWAP SHOP ACTIVITY

The students of M I, M II and M III went on a shopping spree today, 09th September 2013. They came all geared up with their shopping bags, wallet, money, cap and sun glasses. The excitement was evident on their faces as they discussed amongst themselves what they were going to buy.

To give them a real feel of shopping experience a small desk was converted into a shop in the activity room where in they all trotted in with their shopping bags. The students ‘bought’ little things from the ‘shopkeeper’ in exchange of the ‘money’ given to them.

The activity was conducted to introduce the concept of ‘value of money’ and how we meet our day to day requirements with the help of money. It was a good experience for the children which they

thoroughly enjoyed.

ONAM CELEBRATION

Onam was celebrated in school today, 16th September 2013 with joy and enthusiasm. The teachers came dressed in off white and gold combination keeping in mind the auspicious colours of the festival.

The Splash pool was decorated and converted into a mini scene where we had Snake boats and coconut trees. The teachers showed their efforts by bringing in the special treats prepared by them.

The students of M I, M II and M III decorated their classes with flower rangoli, POOKALAM, which was part of their class activity.

The students of M III were shown a small documentary on “ONAM” and its importance as a harvest festival. MI and M II students were told about the festival and its significance.

It was a fun filled day for the children and the teachers of the Pre Primary wing as the pictures say it all.

NATURE WALK

The students of MI and M II learnt about nature --- different kind of plants, what we get from plants and how a little seed transforms into a healthy and big plant. They went along with their class teacher on a nature walk in the school premises on 10th September 2013.

The children came prepared for the nature walk- they wore caps, sunglasses and carried a small paper bag to collect things and take it home to show it to their parents. And what a varied collection did they take home...... a variety of leaves, flowers, pebbles and small stones.

It was a fun filled as well as an educative session for the tiny tots who at the end of the day were a little wiser about our earth and why we should take positive steps to save our planet.

FRUIT SALAD ACTIVITY

“HEALTHY MIND RESIDES IN A HEALTH BODY”

And what better way to put across the concept of healthy eating than “fruit salad” activity. The children of M I and M III were made aware of this concept by turning them into little chefs and asking them to prepare fruit salad along with their class teachers.

Children learnt new words like peeling, chopping and squeezing and prepared delicious fruit salad which was enjoyed thoroughly by the teachers as well. Students learnt about healthy food and how to turn it into a delicious snack. The importance of fruits in the diet was also emphasized.

JULY SHS ACTIVITY

FLORA AND FAUNA COMPETITION (SUSHANT LOK)

A beautiful day to begin with! Cool breeze blowing and the sun playing hide and seek with dark clouds. A perfect backdrop for the Flora and Fauna Competition.

When expectations are matched or rather exceeded; a visual treat is what is in store for the onlookers. Once the Competition was underway, the animal parade began.

And what a variety of species of animals, butterflies, bumble bees and plants did all get to see!!! Children were completely at ease with their costumes; in fact they got into the skin of the attire and the character effortlessly. It was delightful hearing them innocently explaining their characters to their teachers.

It was a fun filled day for the tiny tots; a much looked for respite to break free from the monotony of their uniforms and the daily routine classes.

The effort made by parents was evident and was appreciated by one and all. The pink octopus tickled us pink with the funny antics and swarmed around

the tree and we had pretty butterflies pairing up with beautiful flowers.

Juniors of Class I & II go off for a picnic to Apno Ghar on 12th March’13 The students of Classes I & II were taken for a picnic to Apno Ghar on 12th March’13. On the

day of the picnic, the children came to the school with small bags which contained a few snacks, their water bottles and of course, high spirits. The bright, sunny day was equaled only by the

sunny spirits and warm smiles of the excited children as they lined up in the school grounds. As soon as they boarded the buses and sat next to their buddies, fun and excitement took over

with sounds of non-stop chatter, laughter, songs filling the atmosphere inside the buses. In no time at all, they had arrived at Apno Ghar. The young students did their school proud as they

made orderly lines and went inside the premises in a disciplined manner. Once inside, everyone let their hair down and sheer revelry reigned supreme. The park had a number of rides like the

toy-train, the aeroplane merry-go around, the disc shaped ride etc. The children enjoyed themselves on the rides under the watchful eyes of their teachers. The happy gleam in their

eyes and the broad smiles on their faces spread gaiety all around the place and bespoke highly of the pleasure the children were getting from their ‘day out’. The teachers resembled their

excited students as they joined in the fun and took part in the fun games along with them. Soon it was lunch –time and the children partook of well-prepared and delicious lunch with ice-cream

as dessert. All in all, it was a delightful day for the kids and teachers.
