The cattle development programme in Andhra Pradesh is distinct, where the local cattle breeders' associations with three-tier organizations at village, block and district levels in the districts of Mahabubnagar, Warangal and Karimnagar, have sponsored the programme from the funds raised through membership fees and service charges. These district level associations are working with Milk Unions for backward and forward linkages, while utilizing their strength to negotiate with the Government agencies and monitor the services provided by the paravets. With the ownership of the dairy farmers, the sustainability of the programme is ensured.

A BAIF progeny owned by Neta Rai of Nagra village in Chhapra district of Bihar was produced under Godhan Project. The cow yielding over 20 litres of milk everyday, was sold for Rs. 75,000. Dairy husbandry has reassured sustainable livelihood for small and marginal farmers across the country.

The successful conclusion of the imGoats goat development project undertaken in association with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Nairobi in the backward clusters of Dumka district of Jharkhand and Udaipur district of Rajasthan benefitting nearly 5000 households by developing a small ruminant value chain as a platform has been encouraging to increase food security in arid regions by transforming goat husbandry into a profitable and environmentally sound enterprise for the disadvantaged and vulnerable groups. The learnings from this environmentally sound project have greater relevance for wider replication across the country.

Through Jalajeevani Project supported by the Vaishno Mal Malhotra Public Charitable Trust and K.K. Malhotra Trust, the watershed development programme for improved agricultural practices was promoted in 22 villages in Tumkur district. The major objective was to promote soil and water conservat ion, improved agricultural productivity, animal husbandry, introduction of new income generation activities, capacity building of local farmers and sensitise school c h i l d r e n i n co n s e r v a t i o n a n d development activities. The project covered 2640 ha belonging to 1679 families, majority of them belonging to weaker families. With effective soil and water conservation, farmers were able to introduce better varieties of native crops like finger millet, sorghum and red gram. They were also able to make best use of field bunds for castor, beans and fodder. As a result, the crop yields increased by 50-90%. Over 40 ha of barren lands were brought under agricultural production for the first time. Several cash crops and food crops were introduced by farmers. With increase in the water table, the yield of tamarind increased by 72%. A large number of multipurpose tree species established as windbreaks were able to conserve moisture and boost crop production further. With the grass grown on bunds and crop residues coupled with breed improvement programme, the milk yield in the village increased substantially enabling the crossbred cow owners to earn Rs. 25,900 per cow and Rs. 15,100 per buffalo annually. The SHGs and community organizations took active part in promoting afforestation, organic farming, stall feeding of cattle, recycling of wastes, installation of improved smokeless chulhas and cultivation of kitchen gardens. With sensitization of the children in the schools, they were also very active in promoting environmental awareness and sustainable agriculture.

The project solved their drinking water problem. With an investment of Rs. 20 lakhs/year for 3 years, the agricultural output from the families increased by over a crore/year. The cost-benefit analysis of the project over the last 10 years was 2.44 with 32% Internal Rate of Return. With strong People 's Organisat ions and better understanding of conservation of natural resources, these communities are moving towards further progress.

A watershed development project in the drought affected Randullabad village in Satara district was implemented in 2008 by the Gram Panchayat through the village watershed committee. 374 households with 1929 population, represented by 84.76% small and marginal holders owned an area of 856.34 ha, comprising of a cultivable area of 516.12 ha, uncultivable area of 144.37ha and 170.86 ha of forest area, with an annual precipitation of 750 mm. With 10% area under irrigation, the villagers tend to migrate to neighbouring towns and cities.

Women from all the households were organised into 17 SHGs and trained in watershed management, savings and credit, preventive health care. Sayukat Mahila Samiti, an apex body of these groups was formed to plan, implement and monitor the activity related to drudgery reduction and to ensure their active involvement in participatory watershed development. Various farm machineries like potato cultivator-cum-

harvester were purchased which have reduced the drudgery of women by 90%. Training on dairy husbandry enabled the owners of 110 crossbred cows and 69 buffaloes to increase the milk production. To enhance the fodder availability, various grasses such as BAIF Bajra 10, BAIF Napier, Guinea grass, Anjan and stylo were introduced to enable them to improve their milk yields.

Along with effective soil and water conservation, improved varieties of groundnut and maize were promoted. High value crops like green pea, capsicum, brinjal, tomato, were cultivated by 103 farmers with micro-irrigation and 30 fruit orchards were established. Over 5000 multipurpose tree species were introduced on field bunds. 14 landless families received special support of Rs. 20,000, to improve their livelihood status.

The impacts of the programme were increase in water table by 3 m, year-round supply of potable water, 23% increase in irrigated area, 32% increase in cropping intensity, 85% households have installed smokeless stoves. 80% of the households have purchased domestic cooking gas cylinders; 9 families have installed biogas plant.

With improved quality milch animals and 100% increase in fodder supply, the net income from milching animals increased by 85%. With clean drinking water, better nutrition and improvement in health, people are healthy and happy.

Manoj Rai, a youth from a poor landless family in Shankarpur village in Munger

district had a dream of changing his life by starting dairy husbandry and taking a

break from the strenuous agricultural labour work which was not only seasonal

but also unassured. In 1995, he

mobilized all the available

resources in the family and

purchased a calf of native breed of

cattle. He struggled to breed this

animal using private veterinary

services but with very little

success. Although he was able to

have one more female cow born

out of this cow and another local

cow of local breed, dairy

husbandry seemed to add to his burden rather than contributing to his economy till

BAIF established a centre in 2003 in his block. He was the first to avail the breeding

service although with skepticism due to persistent failure in the past. He was

fortunate to have his cows conceive. In 2004, the first calf was born and thereafter,

he never had to look back. Today, Manoj is a proud leader of his family who could

provide education to four of his siblings and establish a flour mill in his village to

generate supplementary income. The income from dairy husbandry itself has

been substantial as with 13 cows worth

Rs. 7 lakhs, he was able to sell 115 litres of

milk everyday and earn a net income of

Rs. 1800 daily. Manoj now has a dream of

establishing a large dairy with 40-50 cows

and developing this as a profitable

enterprise and operating it as a mini

industry at his doorstep. He admits that

this could have never happened without

the support of BAIF.
