I am so proud of all our member leaders, from the parents and coaches of our juniors, our member volunteers, to the Board of Directors and flag officers. Thank you all for your hard work and the time you put in to keep our club running on course!

The Gala was another great success and I want to thank all of you who gave your generous support to our Sailing Foundation. The funds raised make a significant difference to BCYC’s on-the-water activities.

This fall we are not slowing down, with the Wild Sailing Regatta and Party, Lounge Night, Oktoberfest, New Member reception, Corinthian Cup, Avalon cruise, pumpkin-carving and Halloween. There’s something for everyone, so don’t miss out.

As I reflect on the past few months, I remember the laughter, love and friendship we shared with each other. It’s been an amazing summer filled with so many activities, cruises, races, Camp Corinthian, special dinners and parties. Not only do I believe we are one of the friendliest yacht clubs on the bay, we must be one of the busiest in Southern California.

From the Mountains to the Sea

Junior Staff Commodore Jerry Shandera’s cruise to Lake Arrowhead proved to be a great success! We enjoyed a cocktail party at Lake Arrowhead Yacht Club, which has a very nice and large facility right on the lake. On Saturday, a few brave souls took in a scenic hike on the perimeter trail around the lake thanks to hiking leaders, Karen and Don Cerwin, and then headed to the village for lunch. Afterwards, we boarded the Lake Arrowhead Queen for a tour of the lake, which included some historical information along with some comedic relief from our captain. That evening, we proceeded to a beautiful home on the lake provided by Rear Commodore Rhonda Tolar and enjoyed a scrumptious dinner with spectacular lake views of the sunset. Many thanks to our chefs: Rhonda and Natalie Tolar, Wendy and Director Lynn Noah, Judge Advocate Tracy Tormey and Scott McKinley, and Mary Kaye and Tim Whelan! This culinary team went way beyond their call of duty, preparing dinners on Friday and Saturday night for the cruisers to enjoy. Huge kudos to Scott McKinlay and Keith Potter for washing all the dishes, pots and pans! Big thanks to Tim for sharing his musical talents, serenading us under the star lit night sky.

Over Labor Day weekend, many members enjoyed the Anchors Aweigh Raft-In at BCYC. We began the weekend by

having dinner on the patio at Woody’s Wharf. On Saturday, several dinghies and Duffys headed out for a scavenger hunt that took us to places like the Fun Zone ferris wheel, Harbor Island lighthouse and a fabulous stop at new member Connie Whitaker’s dock for some refreshment. Thanks, Connie, for entertaining all of us! The dock party on Saturday evening was so much fun and the food was super. Thanks to Port Captain EB Barden for arranging this special night. Congratulations to Carl Jones for winning the backgammon tournament! We ended the weekend with dinner at BCYC, serenaded by steel drums. This was such a fun holiday weekend and many thanks to Teri and Director Stuart Leigh for chairing this cruise!

Next up is our last cruise of the year, Oct. 25-27, to Avalon for BCYC’s psychedelic trip back in time to the Woodstock era. Yes, it is time to get out those bell bottoms, locate those love beads, find those tie-dye shirts and head down memory lane to revisit those good old groovy 60s. We have plans for a cocktail party and a dinner at Catalina Island Yacht Club, play miniature golf and enjoy an Avalon Road Rally on golf carts. Costumes will be encouraged for this cruise, for sure! This will definitely be one cruise you will not want to miss, so get your groove on and sign up today for BCYC’s Woodstock Revival.

We are in the beginning stages of planning all the cruises for next year. Do you enjoy cruises? Do you have any great ideas for a cruise? If so, please come and share your thoughts, as the Cruise Committee meets at 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month. We would love to see some new faces and get some fresh new ideas.

Michael and I have learned so much while co-chairing the Food and Beverage Committee this past year! Food service encompasses so many things beside just food and beverage. It can be complex and complicated sometimes. We wanted to share some of the information we’ve learned along the way to help you understand the process of adding more items to our menu.

1. Kitchen space – even though we have a nice-sized kitchen, especially compared to some other clubs, when changes are made to the menu, the preparation procedures change, along with storage, prep and line cook assignments. Before adding a new item, we must consider what will be removed from the menu to allow the staff to make room on the line and in the storage areas.2. Kitchen staff – back-of-the house staff are required to prepare not only the menu items ordered for the day, but need to prep for the next day and future events. This often includes peeling, cutting, slicing, chopping, preparing stocks and rendering etc.3. Menu changes – in addition to our current menus (Columbia Room, Dining Room, Saturday Breakfast and

Sunday Omelet Express), we have the sandwich of the month, soups each day the club is open and weekly dinner specials. In addition, member events can involve buffets, event menus with appetizers and special menus for events like Tuscany on the Terrace and Oktoberfest. To add a new menu item, General Manager Scott Jones and Chef Georges Rapicault review a report that details how many of each item was sold, as well as the top-10 sellers for the month. Based on this analysis, menus are then printed and placed in the hard folders, a step that involves office staff. 4. Financial – Scott and Chef have excellent reports showing the menu items that sell well. When items are added to a menu at the request of members, but are ordered infrequently, there is a good deal of waste, both in ingredients and labor.

While the Columbia Room and Dining Room menus are updated every quarter, new-on-the-menu items typically replace slower selling items. The Food and Beverage Committee is fortunate to have Scott attend our monthly meetings. He is always receptive to members’ requests, but as the club general manager, must evaluate these requests for their impact on all aspects of the food service operation at BCYC. We welcome all of your requests and will submit them each month, or better yet, please join us at our meeting the third Wednesday of each month. This is your opportunity to discuss ideas for upcoming event themes and Sunday Night Suppers!

The Junior Events Committee kicked off September hosting the fall junior sailing parent mixer. We enjoyed wine, cheese and fun conversation while the kids finished up their sailing instruction on a beautiful late summer afternoon. We are so fortunate to have such an active and supportive group of parents involved in the junior sailing program.

As we look ahead, we have our favorite event coming. Mark your calendars for our third annual pumpkin-carving contest Sunday, Oct. 27, from 2-4 p.m. It’s BYOP (bring your own pumpkin), but the tools and decoration for your pumpkins will be provided. We will have treats and hot cocoa too! Awards will be presented for the funniest, scariest and most creative pumpkin. We will also have succulent plants available for those who would like to create a succulent pumpkin table decoration. These were a huge hit last year, so we decided to continue with them again this year. This is a family-friendly event and we encourage all members to attend.

Fall Favorites

I don’t come from a sailing family. To be honest, I don’t think my parents knew the difference between starboard and port, mainsail and jib. MY love for sailing truly comes from no one but myself.

When I was five years old, my mom signed me up for summer camp at BCYC. Little did she know that this program would turn into one of my lifelong passions. During those days as a Starfish, I fell in love with both the sailing component and the community at Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club. The supportive coaches, friends and staff I found at BCYC is what kept me coming back year after year. Now, after 12 years at the yacht club, I really do consider BCYC my second home.

As the junior commodore this year, I want to give back to BCYC. I hope to encourage more junior board participation at the club and with community service projects. It is important to not only appreciate your community, but to also help make it a better place.

Articles for The Masthead are due approximately one month prior to publication. Some of my data may be inaccurate by the time you read this. However, I think it is important to address this situation.

The charter boat, Conception, recently caught fire, exploded and ended up on the bottom of the ocean with 33 lives lost, one unaccounted for, and 5 survivors. This is one of the worst boating disasters in our state’s history. I am addressing this because, as vice commodore, I oversee the water-based activities at BCYC.

This disaster hit the boating community very hard. Every person on that boat was an experienced “boater” and it is hard to understand how so many lives could be lost. It is difficult to anticipate every possibility or situation you may experience on your boat and your reaction to it. What I am suggesting to you, if you have not already done so, is to physically place yourself in every part of your boat and imagine and plan how you or your children or grandchildren would escape if they could not get out the easiest way. This is hard to face, but it is a reality. Then discuss it with them.

Up-to-date safety equipment on a boat is a must – check it now if you haven’t done so recently. Don’t wait for Opening Day inspections. Spend time on your boat discussing with other people escape routes (just as we do for earthquake preparedness) and talk to neighbor boaters. Ask them about their plan. Make changes to your boat if necessary. One thing I know for certain is boaters are problem solvers and critical thinkers and are willing to learn from others. You can do everything right and be prepared and things can, and will, go wrong.

This is too important an issue to make light of with a closing cliché so…be safe.

March 2020 will be Showboat’s 48th year for this annual musical theater dinner show! Some may ask what is Showboat all about. It involves 50-plus members who make up the cast and stage crew. The theme, chosen by the commodore, is different every year and, as an added bonus, the commodore performs in the show! Ginny Lombardi, 2020 commodore, was a high school principal, so the theme will be BCYC High School Musical Reunion. The process of creating the show is just beginning and we welcome any members who would like to be part of Showboat as cast, back stage crew, stage building and show lighting. Dance classes, under the guidance of Larry Watts, long-time Showboat director, take place every Wednesday night in the multi-purpose room located on the lower level. Cast rehearsals, including children and grandchildren of members, start in January, on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Showboat Committee chairs are Secretary Kari Konapelsky, current Vice Commodore Ginny Lombardi and me. Please reach out to any of us and let us know you would like to join the team for the 2020 production. I have been in Showboat for 20 years and it is one of my most favorite activities at BCYC – it is a great way to get to know so many members.

The annual Awards Banquet is Nov. 16. All the awards you see in our trophy cases come out and are on display with the names of past and current-year recipients. There are multiple categories for racing, cruising, outstanding service to the club, woman of the year and more. Please come to the banquet and show your support and appreciation to all who help make BCYC such a great place to be a member.

For the past three years I have really enjoyed chairing the Food and Beverage Committee. I want to thank all of the staff, Chef George Rapicault, General Manager Scott Jones and the many members who have attended dinner events, Sunday Night Supper and many other fun events. This last year, I have served as co-chair with Nancy and Michael Means. I am happy to report that they will chair this amazing committee in 2020. They have enthusiasm and great ideas – all members are welcome to participate on the Food and Beverage Committee.

Many thanks to Don White for his outstanding leadership and support. He’s retiring from his role as Race Committee co-chair to spend more time with family and do a lot more racing!

Some good news from 2019 – PHRF participation grew by 29 boats over the same races in 2018. Part of the growth is attributed to a race schedule that enabled a number of boats from Dana Point to participate, and some good, old-fashioned phone calls and email blasts to the racers, plus we run really good races. Thank you to the Race Committee!

I could write a whole book on the Leukemia Cup Regatta, but The Masthead editor has other ideas. Just go to the BCYC Racing website and look at the photos and at the video from the drone. Wow, what great shots, and we raised a lot of money for cancer research, a double-wow! This was truly a special weekend.

The Wild Sailing Regatta is already off to a wild start with the first race. The series began in 2018 with strong winds and competitive skippers and promises to be one of our signature races.

Finally, the world-famous Hot Rum Series kicks off in November. Race #1 always features the “pirate costume” contest – a bottle of grog goes to the winner.

Tuscany on the Terrace was a blast and The Gala was the event of the season, so what do we have next?

Lounge Night, featuring you! Ramsey Johansson and Linda Ritchie will turn off the mic Oct. 11 and the race is on for LIP SYNC BATTLE. Sign up for your favorite song. Remember, you don’t have to sing – now that’s taking Karaoke to the next level.

November 16 is the annual Awards Banquet. Let’s celebrate all the great work and many accomplishments of our members.

It’s time to get ready for the holiday season. Schedule some time Nov. 17 and 18 to help decorate the club. Friends, food and libations make this a fun event. The decorating plan is in place and now we need a few hours of your time to transform the club.

Then, to help celebrate the now-decorated club, plan to join us for the Wine Dinner Nov. 22. Freemark Abbey, a Napa Valley original, will be the featured winery. Make sure you don’t miss this sure-to-sell-out evening.

We can’t believe the end of the year is almost here. The New Year’s Eve dinner and dancing extravaganza is in the planning stages. Join us at our next Activities Committee meeting Oct. 9 to be part of the fun.

A heartfelt thanks to our BCYC members who made the Las Commodores Backpack Drive such a huge success. We delivered more than 200 backpacks to our Marine children in Camp Pendleton. Thanks to Bobbi Silvey and Sally Sopkin for chairing this event.

While we are on the subject of giving, our 2018 Las Commodoras Board of Directors, led by President Leslie Kazarian, has made a gift of $3,000 to the Special Forces Home for Christmas Fund spearheaded by Dick Stone. Kudos to Las Commodoras!

The “Chopped” luncheon was great fun and all contestants were extremely creative in designing their menus. Exotic and delicious dishes were enjoyed by all who attended. Thanks to Barbara Eden for chairing this event and to our contestant chefs: Tammy Boivin, Leslie Caplan and Ally Foster; and sous chefs: Staff Commodore Marshall Caplan, Ally Foster and Rear Commodore Rhonda Tolar. All were very enthusiastic and willing chefs.
