Elvis and Pirate Sightings

CruisingBill & Kristy [email protected]

Over Labor Day weekend our cruisers escaped to a Hawaiian paradise cruise at Long Beach Yacht Club. It had been a while since we med-moored to the long dock at LBYC and it was nice to return. Our guide for the weekend was Cindy Buffa, who did an amazing job coordinating the cruise. We enjoyed a great sunset from the upper deck on Friday before dining in the LBYC dining room. Saturday, our cruisers enjoyed leisurely morning cocktails on the dock, created fabulous tiki masks by the pool, ate pupus and enjoyed a “Blue Hawaiian” night under the stars. We watched a very young Elvis sing and dance his way through Blue Hawaii while sipping on Blue Hawaiian beverages. After a potluck brunch on Sunday, the cruisers enjoyed a hang loose afternoon to dinghy around, walk, enjoy the Sunday market, or nap. After a poolside BBQ dinner we enjoyed an impromptu second movie night – a screening of everyone’s favorite – Captain Ron. Not only did we have more cruisers join us that night, we had LBYC members join as well.

Word has it that the Pirates of BCYC will be descending on Catalina Island the weekend of Oct. 23-25. We will be storming the CIYC facility and competing in our annual miniature golf tournament, plus much more! A completely catered Pirate’s feast will be provided Saturday night. Don’t miss this epic finale to our cruising season.

Fishing Frenzy

AnglingKip [email protected]

Angling

[email protected]

As we predicted, this will be the best fishing season in decades. We have lots of yellow tail, blue fin and yellow fin tuna, and even some wahoo. Marlin are heavily concentrated off Santa Barbara Island and points north. There are two people I know who caught and released five and seven marlin respectively on a fishing trip in late August. Fishing is better here than in Cabo San Lucas!

I am sure that many members have been catching fish. Some may be notable. I have no way of keeping track of the fish caught unless you email me a picture and weight of the fish ([email protected]).

Just to show you how good fishing is, my boat washer (not a fisherman and has never caught a fish) became startled while washing Kismet in its slip next to the sea wall in Huntington Harbor. He saw what he thought to be a shark and hit the fish with the boat deck scrub brush. He rendered it unconscious and pulled him out of the water. Since he knew I would never believe him, he took a picture. I believe it is a yellow tail but can’t confirm since he took a selfie and I couldn’t see the entire fish. That is the wildest fish story I have ever heard.

It’s not too late to be part of this fishing frenzy as it should continue through the end of October. Good luck fishing.

BCYC Members and Friends - 15 boats and 60 peeps - San Juan Islands in September.

Wikipedia defines a salute as a gesture or other action to display respect. I’ll expand that definition a bit to include “and appreciation.”

As many of you already know, the “Blue Shirt Brigade” works very hard — sometimes multiple times a week — so that BCYC can run the very best races in the area. Often you see six or more blue shirts headed down to the docks carrying marks, flags, anchors, etc.; all the gear necessary to run a race, on their way to hours of work out on the water. Add a “this is what we do” attitude to the mix and you know why I salute the members of Race Committee who work with me throughout the year.

The Angelman Series is complete. Congratulations to Jeff Burch, Joe Degenhardt and John Szalay competing well – and thanks for flying the BCYC burgee for all the other boats to see as you passed them. Our racers, both senior and junior, represent us well on the race course. Be sure to salute them for their efforts.

Soon, Race Committee will begin the Hot Rum Series, the wrap-up race series of the year. As mentioned in past articles, this is where first-timers and/or cruisers have an opportunity to see what racing is all about in a fun, easy environment. Set your sails and tour around a few harbor marks and, if you do this quickly, win a trophy. There will be a prize (hot rum?) for the best costume after the first day of racing. Any Jack Sparrow or Elizabeth Swann lookalikes out there?

As we move into the fall season after having wrapped up a very successful Camp Corinthian summer, the new junior board officers had the opportunity to meet and develop a few fun ideas for the coming year. As you may know, every year the junior board’s main event, and primary fundraiser, involves hosting a themed Bingo Night. Proceeds from this event directly benefit the BCYC Junior Sailing program, and as you can imagine, the list of things we need is long and expensive. As your new junior commodore, it’s my great honor to choose the theme for this event, and I have waited for this moment for a very long time! I’ve got a few great ideas – maybe a Parisian theme this year – Bonjour Bingo? How about a Disney theme – The Happiest Game on Earth? I know you are going to love my final theme, and I can’t wait to share it with you. Please stay tuned for our 2016 Bingo date as soon as it’s confirmed.

Before we get to Bingo Night, we might just have another fun event to invite you to – more details to follow. As junior commodore, it’s my job to make this year the best year it can be and I hope you’ll join us for some fun, friends and good times – everything BCYC stands for – for all ages!

At this year’s Sabot Nationals, I finally made it into the Silver Fleet. It was not easy to get there. How did it happen? There is no guaranteed formula for success, but maybe I did figure out that patience + practice + luck = success! For me, a big part of being a smart and successful sailor is working on my patience. At the regatta, hosted by Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in early August, the wind was a lot different than what is typical in Newport Beach. There was a lot of wind the first few days and it was really challenging for me to sail in so much wind, but I did my best, and tried hard to remember everything I’d learned all summer. Knowing I’m not the greatest sailor in heavy wind, I am working hard to get better at it. Luckily, I didn’t capsize and made it into the Silver Fleet. Finally, on the last day of competition, we had my favorite kind of condition – no wind! With patience, dedication and practice, and a little good luck, lots of good things can happen when we sail. - Abby Hampton, BCYC Junior Sailor -

New Ideas, New Fun Patience + Practice +

Luck = Success

Junior CommodoreKate [email protected]

BCYC Junior Sailing had a fantastic summer season with some incredible results from our sailors. We have a new national champion here at BCYC – Jake Mayol won the 2015 Junior Sabot Nationals at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in August. His older brother, Max, took third, only one point from the top spot. August was also the time for the CFJ National Championship, at Santa Barbara Yacht Club, where BCYC sailors Derek Pickell (2013 Junior Sabot Nationals champion) and his sister, Sammy, took second place overall. Congratulations to the Mayols and the Pickells for their outstanding performances at these major events.

I’m happy to report our Fall Sailing Program is off to a strong start with two new classes and more kids enrolled than ever before! Following its success this summer, we are now offering a Junior Mariners class this off-season led by Berkeley Green. The program introduces a variety of seamanship skills, such as knots, splicing and navigation, as well as multiple different boats for kids to use, including the RS Aero, RS Feva, Lido 14 and more. There is a powerboat portion of the course where kids have the chance to learn how to operate and maneuver a 13’ bay whaler.

The Evolution of Fall Sailing

Junior Sailing DirectorCameron [email protected]

As in past years, we have a Sabot beginner class for sailors with minimal experience, where they practice the fundamentals of sailing with coaches Ashton Brown and Lea Iodice. We also have the Sabot racing class with an emphasis on competitive strategy and course tactics led by Sabot specialist Mark Gaudio. In the double-handed class led by Head Coach Matt Peter, we have included the option to sail C420s and Lasers in addition to CFJs. Also added is an extra day of practice each week with a special focus on scholastic sailing for those looking to improve their high school racing skills. With lots of promising changes happening around BCYC, I’m excited to see further development in our youth sailing programs moving forward. Now all we need is for you to join us on the water!

Celebrate

ActivitiesKari Konapelsky/Lauri [email protected]@gmail.com

First off, we need to thank all of our BCYC staff who made A Taste of Italy event such a big success. Another big thanks to our members who volunteered: Jim and Julie Bitetto, Cary and Silvia Breeden, Carol Bloom and Jack Callahan, Teri Leigh, Director Steve Moffet and Debbie Secard. These folks did a great job with setting up and taking down decorations, adding that something special to the night.

Fall kicks off a new season of activities around the club. Saturday, Oct. 3, is our New Member Celebration. Please join us for cocktails and fabulous appetizers from 4-7 p.m. as we welcome our new members into the BCYC family.

November 7 is our annual Awards Night, honoring the many members who made things happen in 2015. Our Holiday Design Team is looking for many volunteers to help us turn the club into a winter wonderland later in the month. Come down and give us a hand for a couple of hours – we will get you in the holiday spirit! Please join us at our next Activities Committee meeting Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

DID YOU KNOW ? Important Stuff

How much do you know about our Summer Junior Program? Many of us think of the program as a bit of a nuisance that we deal with for part of the summer. Actually, our program is one of the best in the west. The lucky kids who spend six weeks at Camp Corinthian are exposed to a very high-quality experience. Many of us have children and grandchildren who are missing one of the best summer activities there is. Camp Corinthian offers full-day sessions with high-quality instruction for kids from age five through their teens. They learn life-long marine skills, including sailing, swimming, boat handling and boat maintenance. They also learn the skills of working together as a team, making good decisions and that teamwork always pays off.

Junior Sailing Director Cameron MacLaren and Head Coach Matt Peter have led our program to new levels of quality, on the water and the shore. In my 37 years at BCYC, my children and my grandchildren have been a part of the Junior Program. During all those years, I have observed our program and have never seen a program that was as successful as the one this year. We not only had outstanding success on the race course, but we also offered wonderful non-racing marine experiences for those kids who are not into being competitive in sailing. They learn every aspect of marine activity and fun on the water without the emphasis on racing.

Of course, our Junior Program is not just in the summer. We also have opportunities for after school and weekend sailing adventures all year round. If you have children or grandchildren, do yourself and them a favor by contacting Cameron at the club and learning more about the opportunities that are available.

Did you know that we will be leaving the BCYC swimming pool open until Oct. 6! So come out and enjoy the weather and the pool at BCYC.

Did you know that beginning Oct. 2, while the nice weather lasts, we will be providing Pool Patio service with the new Patio Menu on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for lunch and dinner.

Did you know that an AED is located just past the display case across from the side entrance to the club office as well as in the lower level laundry room? Make plans to attend the next AED/CPR seminar in 2016.

Hello to all. It has been a wonderful year at BCYC. How many of you know what an AED is and where one is located at the club?

In late September, BCYC hosted a seminar for CPR and AED training. Forty members signed up! They now know the AED is located just past the display case across from the side entrance to the club office. More importantly, they know how to use this life-saving device and can perform CPR.

We had to turn away members who wanted to attend because of class size limit, so I will plan another one in the future – watch for details. It is a basic lifesaver CPR and there is no test, plus AED training. A session was also held for the club staff, so more than half of them are also trained. It only takes a couple of hours and with this training YOU may save a life!

In the near future, the club will have two additional units, allowing for more timely access to an AED throughout the facility. They will be located in the laundry room on the lower level and probably onboard Emmi.

- Bob Sachs, Fleet Surgeon -

As I have mentioned in previous articles, my current role has been to monitor and attend various committee meetings involved in running the BCYC on-shore activities. I’ve been overwhelmed with the commitment of our volunteer members and the willingness and capabilities of our staff to make it all work so we as members can have the best experience possible.

With this in mind our only flaw has been that some of us wait until the last moment to make reservations for the many club activities. I am just as culpable as anyone, but now that I have seen the time and effort that goes into these events, I plan to do my utmost to not let that happen again.

Previously, I had commented on the amount of work and logistical challenge of our recent Clambake at Howland’s Landing. While all those who attended had a great time, I had no idea what went into planning for an event 36 miles from our club, where there are limited facilities. Shortly before the event, we had 50 reservations, and then suddenly it ballooned to 65 the day before. How General Manager Scott Jones and Chef George Rapicault were able to make these seamless accommodations is beyond me.

At our recent Taste of Italy dinner, so capably handled by event chair Lauri Moffett, with assistance from new members Jim and Julie Bitteto, Carol Bloom and Jack Callahan, Sylvia and Cary Breeden, Teri Leigh, and Debbie Secard – all did a masterful job, while Kari Konapelsky was sorely missed. On Thursday before the event, we had 60 reservations and then on the day of the event it rocketed to over 90. This was another outstanding event where everyone had a great time with fellow members. However, we should all strive to not put our staff under this kind of pressure.

So the message is simple for all of us. Procrastinators, we can greatly reduce the strain on the club staff and member volunteers by simply planning ahead and making early reservations!

Reservations, Please

A Note from our Chaplain . . .“Life is amazing. And then it is awful. And then it is amazing again. And in between the amazing and the awful it’s ordinary and mundane and routine. Breathe in the amazing, hold on through the awful, and relax and exhale during the ordinary. That’s just living heartbreak-ing, soul-healing, amazing, awful, ordinary life. And it’s breaththakingly beautiful.”
