On Sept. 23, the BCYC Board of Directors approved the lower level remodeling project and the addition of an elevator. Included will be new restrooms and a laundry room on the lower level, an elevator to all three floors of the clubhouse, and updating of the patio opposite the Junior Room. A start date will be announced after signing a construction contract. Commodore Konapelsky will be issuing a letter with details of the project. No member assessment is required to complete this renovation. - Bob Emmett, House Chair -

We have reached the end of a very hot and exciting summer full of events and activities. A more recent event was Terrazza Italiana, an amazing evening on the patio full of music, food and friends, a little wine tasting, some very fun grape stomping and our very own gondolier – thank you, Cary Breeden! It was a sold-out evening with over 120 people enjoying the festivities on a perfect summer night. Remember to make reservations for our upcoming events before they are sold out!

RBOC Working For You

Ahoy. Recreational Boaters of California (RBOC) has been protecting your boating interests since 1968. RBOC is a nonprofit advocacy organization that works with state and local governments to promote recreational boaters’ interests, protect boaters from restrictive or adverse laws and enhance boating opportunities. Since 1992, RBOC and BoatUS have worked together, developing a great partnership. All members of the RBOC Board of Directors are boaters like you, volunteering their time to keep boating fun and affordable to all California boaters. Please visit rboc.org and see what you can do to assist and see what they are involved in on your behalf. When was the last time you ran your boat to full engine RPM and cleared your engines? Did you get full factory required RPM? Getting factory required top RPM is extremely important

Top Angler And Flags

Lorie Buchanan caught a dorado and a yellowtail while the Buchanans were on their way to San Diego for the Junior Staff Commodore’s Cruise. She looked for a kelp paddy – a great spot to find these fish – found one, then pointed it out to her husband, Jim, so he would head that way. The dorado was about 25 pounds and the yellowtail was also good-sized. In 2014, she seems to be top female angler at BCYC.

The local fishing season is heating up. On a recent fishing excursion, Chris Bertrand caught a dorado and tuna, while Director Joe Bekas caught a few yellowfin tuna. I would love to hear more true fish stories! Congratulations to all of you successful anglers.

Many of you have asked what the meaning is of the flags that fishing boats are flying. They represent the kind of fish caught that day. In the accompanying picture, starting from left to right: 1. Marlin; 2. Dorado; 3. Swordfish (one of a kind made by Larry Collins); 4. Bluefin tuna; 5. T flag – means fish that were tagged and released.

When a game fish is tagged, the tag chip sends out a signal that can be tracked by people who want to study fish migration habits. Because the tagging equipment is very expensive, often flying the T flag simply means fish were caught and released, but not tagged.

to the life and health of your engine(s). This will help to keep your engines from running in a “lugging” mode. Engines in “lug” mode will not burn fuel completely, costing you money in lost miles per gallon and building up internal gunk. Your engine will become even more inefficient over time, similar to never brushing your teeth! Tuning your prop(s) to attain correct RPM, with the boat at full weight, is mandatory. You should have your props (and shafts) tuned every four or five years as preventive maintenance to attain this RPM.

You should be/need to run your engines at full RPM regularly, especially if you spend most of your time in the harbor. You should do this every time you leave the harbor and before you re-enter. This is true for all powerboats and sailboats. Watch your temperature gauges, as they can tell you a lot about the inside of your engine.

Here we are in fall and I hope you have many wonderful memories of the summer activities with your BCYC family. Somehow, the fall season doesn’t look much quieter than the summer. We still have several cruises and events to keep us stimulated and busy.

For example, you won’t want to miss the Catalina Island Yacht Club cruise in early October. The Commodore’s Cruise through the Panama Canal, with stops at many exciting ports, is just around the corner. We still have many activities at the club and sailboat racing has a year round schedule. In other words, there is no slow season at BCYC.

The one upcoming event that I want to encourage every member to attend is the Awards Night Dinner, Nov. 15. This is the special event each year where we all get together and give a huge THANK YOU to those who have given so much time and energy to make all these activities possible. It is not just about those who win the awards, it is about all the member volunteers who help to make the BCYC family so very special. Volunteerism is the life-blood of club and it is recognized and honored at the Awards Night event.

On a personal note, I would like to strongly encourage our newer members to make every effort to attend Awards Night. Thirty-five years ago, when Doug and I were brand new members, we went to Awards Night. We were very glad we did as we met so many members and gained an understanding of the committee structure and the joys and rewards of volunteering. After that evening, we really felt as though we were truly a part of the BCYC family.

Awards!

Just Around the Corner

The Las Commodoras Garden Tea in September was a big success, thanks to Kari Konapelsky, event chair. The lower patio was transformed into an amazing garden and beautiful setting for an afternoon featuring ladies with lovely hats, good food and conversation, and pleasant weather.

With many members sailing away through the Panama Canal for the Commodore’s Cruise this month, Las Commodoras will not have a luncheon or event.

Just around the corner is our luncheon, Nov. 20, which will kick off the club’s annual toy drive. BCYC members always donate generously to support the children at Camp Pendleton. Watch for details and plan ahead! The toys are delivered the first week of December.

Holiday Mania, our holiday luncheon on Dec. 4, will include a very lively auction. This event is the major fundraiser for Las Commodoras, so mark your calendar now!

With 2014 quickly coming to an end, be sure to participate in the many events BCYC has to offer. We would enjoy seeing you at one or both of our remaining Las Commodoras luncheons.

Summer was awesome for the BCYC Junior Program this year! We had a very successful program, run by Sailing Director Pete Dodosh. Numerous Sabot sailors moved up classes, and our very own Max Mayol and Derek Pickell won the CFJ Junior Olympics, held in Mission Bay. Also, we had a record-breaking presence at the CFJ Nationals this summer, with seven boats sailing under the BCYC burgee. In addition, the BCYC Junior Program was well represented at Sabot Nationals, hosted this year by Newport Harbor Yacht Club. Several kids won trophies at the regatta, including Dillon Graveline, Jake Mayol, Max Mayol and Joshua Means. Congratulations!

A special thank you to all of the coaches involved in the BCYC Summer Program – the summer would not have happened without their efforts and dedication. I know everyone had a blast and learned a great deal.

As the new junior commodore, I am honored to thank outgoing Junior Commodore Derek Pickell for all his hard work. We accomplished a lot during the past year, and I hope to expand upon these successes and make them even more lasting and impactful for the Junior Program.

This year’s Junior Board of Directors has over 20 members. We aim to utilize our large population to benefit the Junior Program. I know this coming year will go well and I know that the board has the capability of accomplishing amazing things.

Taco Tuesday racing concluded another successful year in late August. The new 2013 Board of Directors’ Perpetual Awards for the Taco Tuesday Series winners were presented to Mike Inmon on Sleeping Beauty for the PHRF division, and to Jan Houghton on Kismet for the Harbor 20 division. The awards presentation was very well attended – a big thanks to all the member volunteers at the club and on the water for making Taco Tuesday a success. The Mexican Buffet and $1 beer were big hits again this year.

We had a great turnout for the 2014 Club Championship last month. The racing was intense and the event was a lot of fun. Thanks to Junior Staff Commodore Tom Madden for coordinating the championship. Since I can barely spell sailing, it was really helpful to have Tom provide advice and oversight for the event. Additionally, we had a great team of members who worked hard to make the event enjoyable for the racers and other members who attended the Family and Championship Division races.

Club cruising continued in September with the Seal Beach Yacht Club cruise. Coming up this month is the Catalina Island Yacht Club cruise, one of the year’s most popular cruises. It is a great time to cruise to Avalon — the crowds are gone and the weather is usually beautiful.

In September, Joan and I had the opportunity to visit Windsor Oaks Winery in Santa Rosa, CA. Windsor Oaks is owned by BCYC Secretary Chuck Wert, whose excellent wines you have probably enjoyed from the club’s wine list. For the last several years, Chuck has donated wine and lunch at the winery to the LLS Auction/Dinner. This year, Joan and I were one of several successful bidders for the wine, winery tour and lunch. Staff Commodore Mary Bacon and Bob were also successful bidders and coordinated a trip for the four of us to the winery. We had a fantastic time touring the beautiful grounds and enjoying several (OK, more than several) outstanding estate wines before, during and after lunch. I suggest that if you have made the LLS donation for the wine and lunch, make plans to visit the winery. It is a trip not to be missed.

DID YOU KNOW ? The Breakfast Menu

• What are the top three Saturday morning breakfast menu items?

• What is the number one side order on Saturday morning?

[Answers on page 12]

Ah, October – fall leaves, pumpkin spice with everything and the BEST cruising weather of the whole year! Warm days, cool nights, blue skies and generally calm sea conditions mean you can still sneak out on your boat for a local cruise. So, grab some friends and buddy boat, or go on your own to some of our local cruising grounds. Head south for the weekend to Dana Point. You can anchor out or use your reciprocal privileges to visit the local yacht clubs. It’s always best to call in advance to check for slip availability. Don’t have time for a weekend getaway? Then anchor out at Emerald Cove in Laguna Beach for an afternoon with lunch “al fresco.” Heading up the coast, a great weekend anchorage is on the shore side of White’s Island in Long Beach. Nicknamed “Poor Man’s Catalina,” it’s a great place to relax, launch some water toys and enjoy an evening barbecue. At night, the Island is lit up and the waterfalls add to the show. If you are not comfortable anchoring or would like to meander into Belmont Shores, there are new moorings right at the Belmont Pier. Check them out at belmontmoorings.com. Best of all, you can always “cruise the club.” Give Susie Brodrick a call to reserve a spot at BCYC and spend the weekend in our own marina. Enjoy drinks by the pool, a leisurely dinner in the dining room and the camaraderie of fellow members at a relaxed pace. We are, after all, the Friendliest Club on the Bay.

Our formal club cruising season ends with the Catalina Island Yacht Club Cruise/Buccaneer Days, Oct. 3-5. Thanks to Steve and Lauri Moffett for chairing this fun event and to Staff Commodore Kenny Rozak and Wendy, for coordinating with CIYC. Keep an eye on the Weekly Update emails and e-blasts for our “pop-up” cruises coming this fall.

The answer is “New and Improved.” Carnac the Magnificent divines the question… “What will BCYC’s 2015 Race Calendar look like?” After tearing open the envelope to reveal the calendar, Carnac confirms:

•We’ll start theyearwith thenewDougMillsSeries: threedays of random-leg racing spread over three months.

•TheBogartRace(to/fromAvalon)willbeaseparateevent,not part of a longer series.

•The Angelman Series will be three days of windward-leeward racing spread over three months.

We’ll take short breaks between these three events to allow racers time to enjoy the Newport to Ensenada Race, their respective clubs’ Opening Days, other clubs’ races, etc. Carnac’s vision is to provide racing venues throughout the year with no overlaps. Race…rest…race…rest…etc.

On the other tack, Harbor 20 racers will see little change. The Mid-Winter Regatta, the Weiss Series and the Tune-Up are planned for the same weekends as in 2014…great winds…no party boats…no barges!

PHRF and Harbor 20 racers will also see little change in the Leukemia Cup Regatta and the Hot Rum Series. These events are good starting points for novices. The 6th Annual Taco Tuesdays summer series will return featuring good racing, good food and just plain fun. This event is a great place to start crewing.

The final answer is “Five”…Carnac divines the question “How many additional BCYC members with sailboats will race in 2015?” Carnac also warns that “1,000 barnacles may infest your bottom” if you don’t race — heed his words.

Early in the year, several members pointed out to the House Committee that the club’s WiFi service was unreliable at the outer edges of the marina. In considering this, the committee unanimously felt that WiFi has become an important service at quality marinas. The problem was identified as signal strength rather than limited bandwidth to the Internet. The club’s network vendor offered several approaches, and the most cost-effective one that also allowed the addition of coverage to the multi-purpose room/patio, was approved by the Board of Directors. The upgrade has been completed and feedback is that coverage is now good. The committee will monitor the WiFi service as streaming content becomes more popular and we use more bandwidth. This project is a good example of members coming to the House Committee with an issue that was reasonable, and the club responding.
