2014 – the year of the European Election. As such, 2014 will most probably be dominated by issues on which this newly published flyer „Baden‑Württemberg and the European Union“ provides important background knowledge for the reader.Selected key data on the European state go‑vernment in comparison to Baden‑Württemberg is clearly presented. For example: How high were youth unemployment or inflation rates in
each member state? What was the electoral participation in each Europe‑an Election in 2009? These and many other topics – from tourism to life expectancy ‑ are included in this publication.
The European Union has become an impor‑tant part of our lives and influences many areas of our daily routine.
Mutual exchange and being able to live, learn and work anywhere in the European Union means that Europe is becoming continuously closer. Borders, other languages and cultures are no longer seen as barriers that cannot be overcome, but rather as aspects that enrich and benefit our quality of life. The European
Union has developed into a region of and for almost 500 million people where mutual exchange is part of daily life.
Baden‑Württemberg and its economy benefit to a large extent from the European Single Market and the common currency. But this also means that we have a great deal of responsibility in Europe. The state government will take on this responsibility in the future and will particularly support the strengthening of the democratic and social dimension of Europe.
