Motto and Core Vision of the
Sahyadri Conclave
The inception of Sahyadri Science Conclave was done to
nurture a vision that will foster new ideas, inspire
scientific inquiry, enable the critical examination of
scientific question and activities from a new point of
view and directions for a better tomorrow. In addition
to establishing and encouraging personal contacts.
The “Sahyadri Science Conclave” is an initiative to
popularize Science & Technology amongst the masses
and create an awareness regarding its impact on Socio-
economic levels for a sustainable development of the
nation. It will be providing a platform for budding young
scientists and managers to deliberate on a panel
discussion on varied topics of Science, Technology and
Management, Lectures presented by the Nobel
Laureates, Scientists, and Interactive sessions relating
to various application oriented themes and issues will
be discussed.
The word "science" probably brings to mind many
different pictures: a fat textbook, white lab coats,
microscopes, an astronomer peering through a
telescope, a naturalist in the rainforest, Einstein's
equations scribbled on a chalkboard, the launch of the
space shuttle, bubbling beakers in the chemistry Lab
etc. All of those images reflect some aspect of science,
but, none of them provide a essence of it as a big
picture because science has so many facets. Science is a
way of discovering what's in the universe and how they
worked in the past, how things work today and how
things will work for the next generations.
In school, science may sometimes seem like a collection
of isolated and static facts listed in a textbook, which is
often boring and students tend to lose interest in this
wonderful subject. This conclave is our effort to help
the young minds to understand that Science is exciting,
useful, ongoing and is important to human endeavor,
this conclave will serve as an opportunity for the
students to explore the wonders of science.
Taking a step ahead, Sahyadri Science Conclave is aimed
to provide opportunity for about 800 students from
different institutions and schools, research scholars
and teachers from different disciplines of Science,
Technology and Management to come together and
interact with Nobel Laureates, Scientists and
Management experts to foster lateral thinking. This
intellectual gathering of scientists and students from
across the country provides a rare platform for
interaction and expose the students to the excitement
of scientific research /investigation and motivate them
to take up study of science, technology and
management and take teaching/research as their
career options.

the ambitious plans he made for our country. India
Vision 2020, prepared under the chairmanship of our
'Missile Man', was aimed at transforming India into a
developed country focusing on core areas for social,
scientific and economic development through an
innovation-driven culture. Sahyadri Science Conclave is
an humble effort to realize his vision.
Expected Outcome and Journey ahead
• To bring together Nobel Laureates, Scientists,
Management Experts and students under one
conducive platform to encourage meaningful
dialogue amongst themselves.
• To promote the importance of values in science
education so that the learners will be future-ready
for the exciting world which they will live and work in
• Motivating students to take up Science as a career
and make them understand the role of Research in
nation building.
• To create, ideate, innovate your own project,
relentlessly work and proactively deliver.
• Bridging the gap between prototypes to world class
product.
There are no Dreams
too large, No innovations
unimaginable & No frontiers
beyond our Reach…

Planet has nurtured millions of life forms of sheer variety of birds, plants, insects and worms through a mind
boggling millions of years of evolution. In our quest for growth and better quality of life we have exploited Earth.
Our idea of life and growth has lead to severe uncontrolled exploitation of natural ecosystem. From an atom to
anything we have exploited everything. We have killed creature to make our life easier . This is not just our home
alone, in fact , we share this home with every living creature and it is time we do our part to protect it . We have
failed to find a better way vehicle through which we can expand our human eco-system without destroying
other animal and plant life.
We are in a false notion that exploiting physical resource is the only way to expand. Our economies are built like
this with an idea that having means buying more and using more. But from where does this more come from?
We are on an exploitative mode, not by choice but by compulsiveness. We will do just what is needed; nothing
more, nothing less. If we are given any number of planets to live on, we will destroy all of them within few
centuries. In the process of human progress we have disturbed the total ecological balance of the earth, where
in human beings are moving towards water wars and the likes. We have a misconception that nothing in the
world is connected, but infact it is the other way round.
The only way to bring awareness in enthusiastic young minds and sensitize them about this grave issue is to
make them aware that environment is our life. It is because of this planet Earth that we are all here and not vice
versa.
We will be able to live well if the water is clean, the air is clean, the environment is clean and if our health is good.
Consciously, we should understand that quality of life is decided by nature around us. So the theme of conclave
focuses on way of life to water, energy, environment and health. Interaction and deliberations should facilitate in
basic reformations in society to bring back the ecological balance by transforming society. We need to
harmonize peace with the environment else we will all be in pieces.
Sahyadri Conclave - Themes
WATER ENERGY ENVIRONMENT HEALTH
Prelude
8
Growing water demand due to population growth explosion and depletion of water resources are posing
enormous challenges to sustain the growing economy of India. Addressing water scarcity, enhancing water
efficiency and increasing water productivity have become the call of the day. Hence one of the themes for this
Science conclave is identifying issues and sharing the best practices in water use efficiency. Polluting water may
be the biggest single misuse of water; to the extent that a pollutant limits other uses of the water, it becomes a
waste of the resource, regardless of benefits to the polluter. Industry majors recognize water scarcity as one of
the most daunting challenges for the future and the biggest risk to productivity. Best practices in water use
efficiency- recycle and reuse of wastewater, Zero Liquid Discharge, industry technological innovations, online
monitoring etc. are part of the ongoing discussion in industry towards water conservation.
Points to Ponder
• Developments that could help in the
quest for clean water
• Rain water harvesting and other approaches
WATER
• What is Desalination? How to make ocean
water drinkable?
• Saving water - Simple strategies for homes
ENERGY
Society relies on 3Es (Energy, Economy, and Environment). They influence the economic, political, regulatory,
and social factors of the country. Energy is the most important of all resources, while sustainability concept
focuses on the long term survival of communities. The energy and sustainability has to be balanced. Ecological
studies include the result of resource consumption and the technology systems have to move toward
sustainability. Most important question is how technology can contribute to generating the solutions for
achieving sustainability.
Points to Ponder
• Alternate sources of Energy
• Clean Energy
• Advantages and disadvantages of alternate energy.
• Energy conservation buildings
• Energy efficient products
9
There is no doubt for the fact that man is an intelligent animal. Man is able to influence environment with his
activities. The effects of man's activities on environment have been both positive and negative. On one hand,
the scientific inventions of man have made human life comfortable. On the other hand, these inventions have
caused danger for the sustainability of our environment. All the things in the environment interrelate with each
other to give man what he needs for survival. The environment is important and we should all aim to protect it by
avoiding bad practices such as pollution, cutting down of trees and any other human activities that could lead to
the degradation of the environment.
Points to Ponder:
• Connect with nature
• Using technology to conserve the environment
• Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
ENVIRONMENT
• Tackling Deforestation
• Grow your own food
HEALTH
Good Health is the greatest blessing of life. It is increasingly recognized that health is maintained and improved
not only through the advancement and application of health science, but also through the efforts and intelligent
lifestyle choices of the individual and society. According to the World Health Organization, the main
determinants of health include the social and economic environment, the physical environment, and the
person's individual characteristics and behaviours. We are seeking optimal adaptation to disability or disease as
well as freedom from preventable disease or illness, freedom from disabling ways of thinking or behaving as well
as freedom from poor posture or inadequate nutrition.
Points to Ponder:
• Artificial intelligence in Health care approches
• Prediction of Diagnosis and Life Expectancy

Internet of Things (IoT)
Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Machine Learning
Data Analytics
Block Chain
Internet of Things (IoT) is an ecosystem of connected physical objects that are accessible through the internet.
IoT is a new wave of connectivity is going beyond laptops and smart phones, it's also going towards connected
cars, smart homes, connected wearables, smart cities and connected healthcare systems, which results in a fully
connected life. According to Gartner report, by 2020 connected devices across all technologies will reach to 20.6
billion.
AI - The capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior. It focuses on making already “intelligent”
systems capable of simulating human-like decision-making and execution, enabling those systems to perform
functions traditionally executed by skilled human professionals. AI develops more holistic platforms and
solutions that better automate business intelligence and analytics processes. Entire Business Intelligence apps
are built on Machine Learning.
Data analytics refers to qualitative and quantitative techniques and processes used to enhance productivity and
business gain. Organizations across many industries are creating and applying innovative data-analytics driven
applications for everything from improving internal, operational processes and to providing exceptional
customer experiences. The analytics process, including the deployment and use of big data analytics tools, can
help companies improve operational efficiency, drive new revenue and gain competitive advantages over
business rivals. The applications span every walk of life and industry now spanning security, transportation,
fraud and risk detection. Time to revisit Data Analytics applications.
Block Chain - A digital ledger in which transactions made in bitcoin or another cryptocurrency are recorded
chronologically and publicly. Modern internet deals with assets, your most valuable immediate items that you
can touch and want to protect. These assets are stored in encoded form on a network-to-network chain called
the block chain or ledger, where each participant sees who you do business with. This not only protects your
business dealings, prevents theft and also simplifies your affairs. Also it supports in making the process faster
with minimum errors, and saves you from hiring a third party. Block chain technology is a revolution in systems of
record. Bitcoin is history's first permanent, decentralized, global, trustless ledger of records. Since its invention,
entrepreneurs in industries around the world have come to understand the implications of this development.
The nature of block chain technology has got imaginations running wild, because the idea can now be applied to
any need for a trustworthy record.

Renewable Energy Sources
Alternate Energy and Opportunities for Future
Welding Automation
Smart Cities
The development of renewable energy system limits the disadvantages of currently employed conventional
energy source. Doubling the renewable energy sources would generate 900000 jobs in the energy sector by
2030. Development of renewable energy would bring major reforms in various sectors like, electricity
production, heating and cooling systems, transportation etc. Awareness of renewable energy is of paramount
importance as it would minimize the depletion of natural resources, thus providing energy security for future
generations.
The exhaustion of world non-renewable resources makes alternate energy an inevitable avenue for discussion.
Today with the increase in consumption rate there is a greater need for industrialization, which requires
enormous amount of energy. The overdependence on coal, nuclear, and other resources has put enormous
stress on already diminishing natural resources. Hence, development of alternate energy has gained significant
interest. The advancement of alternate energy would also increase the employment opportunities which are an
important aspect for a developing country like India, which has got 50% of population with an average age less
than 25. Further, academic institutions could play a vital role in the growth of alternate energy by organizing
workshops, and conclaves that would promote cutting edge research.
The currently employed conventional welding practices results in reduced productivity and weld quality as this
depends on the operator skills. Further, conventional welding leads to increased scrap and rework. To address
this limitation, it is pertinent to bring automation in welding. Today's curriculum emphasizes largely on
conventional welding hence there is a greater need to bring awareness among the students community. This
could be brought by organizing workshops, seminars conclaves and by incorporating concepts of welding
automation in curriculum.
In the approach of the Smart Cities Mission, the objective is to promote cities that provide core infrastructure
and give a decent quality of life to its citizens, a clean and sustainable environment and application of 'Smart'
Solutions. The focus is on sustainable and inclusive development and the idea is to look at compact areas, create
a replicable model which will act like a light house to other aspiring cities. But the biggest challenges faced for
the development of smart city is financing, city development plan, technical constraints, dealing with the
environment, governance and reliability of utility service and corruption. Based on these challenges,
Researchers need to get grips with how smart cities are affecting citizens rights, freedom of speech and
participation in democratic politics.

Insects are the most dominant creatures on earth in several respects. First of all considering the diversity, they form more than 50 % of all kinds of living beings, accounting for nearly a million different kinds. Their varied life forms, life styles, attractive colours, and an ability to impact the environment in myriad ways make them the most studied groups of organisms in the world.
