Fall of Siena Jud.irn Hook

In the 1550s, onc of the lastof the independent Italianrepublics was overwhelmed bythe Holy Roman Empire.

The cnd of Sienese independenceshould be seen in the context of thedevelopment of the mripire ofCharles V of Spain as a whole.Charles showed no sympathy eitherwith republicanism or with .theideals of the Renaissance city-stateand was personally responsible forthe extinction of two of the lastgreat medicvil communal republics Florence and Siena.

Siena loyally supported CharlesV's policies in Italy. After 1527 apermanent garrison of troops wasused to preserve Siena. Yet Sienaremained a "free" city in that it wasself-governing.

What· sparked off rebellion wasCharles V's decision to build afortress with which to overawe thecity. Fear of a fortress was ingrainedin the thinking of Italians in thesixteenth century. A fortress, controlled by a foreign power within acity, effectively controlled localaffairs. If Charles built a .fortress, itwould advertise that he did not trustthe loyalty of the Sienese.

The fortress did not progress asfast as the Spanish had hoped. TheSienese . arChitect, Peloro, deliberately planned a fortress so largethat it would take years to completeand men who laboured on theproject were recalcitrant and slow.

It was clear that if Siena was tobe saved it must be by force. In July1552 watchers from Siena saw anarmy of French and Italian troopsapproaching the city. The Spanishwere powerless to prevent a popularuprising within the city. .

Thus, inevitably, through thevery way this rebellion was broughtabout, Siena, rather than regainingliberty; exchanged onc master foranother. The Sienese could onlyescape from subjection to Charles Vby submitting to Henri 11.

In January 1554, news arrived inSiena that the Florentines had in-

vaded their territory from the northwhile a Spanish army was approaching from the south. The full weightof the empire of Charles V was tobe thrown against the state of Siena.

Carrying all before it, this armyadvanced purposefully on the city ofSiena, for the Spaniards had learntthat to capture an Italian statc, allthat was necesssary was to take itscapital.

The Sienese were convinced thattheir only chance of saving the statewas to force a campaign in the open.They hoped that they would be ableto break the supply-line withFlorence.

The French delayed their aiduntil June when Henri 11 dispatchedFrench and Swiss troops. In the latesummer of 1554 the Sienese left thecity and occupied the little town ofMarciano and engaged the Spanishforces in a fierce battle which endedin the overwhelming defeat of theSienese.

The Spanish, meanwhile, tightened their grip on the city. By thecnd of August ,the blockade wascomplete. Cut off from the outsideworld, the Sienese had recourse toreligion. Onc of the greatest problems for a commander of a garrison in a besieged city was to keep.up morale. Religious processionsserved as an outlet for emotion.

The Spanish began to violate allthe customs of Renaissance warfare.There was torturing and murderingof prisoners. Attacks on propcrty,looting and burning quickly followed. More serious from the longterm point of view, was the wantondestruction of all the vines, olivcgroves and fruit-trees..

The French did not default corn··pletely on their obligations, but theynever sent aid in sufficient quantities. Meanwhile, within the city,food supplies were running low. OnAugust 6th the "Useless mouths",those who contributed nothing tothe war effort, were ordered out ofthe city. By the middle of Augustbread was as scarce as the wood tobake it with.

By March people wcre beginningto die from starvation and simplewar-weariness. Morale was furtherweakened by the knowledge thatinternational peace negotiations hadbeen going on about the fate ofSiena. It was tacitly admitted thatSicna was defeated. The onc aimwas to get good terms arid to avoida sack of the city. The final eapitulation of Sicna in April 1555 camebecause there was no alternative.There was no food left and nomeans of obtaining any. The termsimposed were harsh. Charles Vasked for and got what amounted toa blank Cheque; he could dispose ofSiena as he was fit. He gave the cityto his son Philip who in turn sold itin 1557 to Duke Cosimo ofFlorence.

The city of Siena was affectedpermanently, her population redu-.ced by more than half. The countryside around was so ruined that signsof the war were still visible fourcenturies later. Siena's destiny wasfinally settled by the Europeanpeace treaty of Cateau-Cambresis.Siena capitulated to Spain andFlorence in 1559. In this obscureway the repUblic of Siena became athing of the past, merged with thegrand Duchy of Tuscany whosefuture she was now to share.

Pino had. his critics: those whosaid he got his facts wrong; those'who said he concentrated too muchon sport. Pino knew all about themand, ironically,. relished their comments: "At least it shows they arereading my article" he used to say tome with a laugh. What no-one couldcriticize was his commitment to thismagazine or to the Italian com-·munity;

I suspect Pino is now in acelestial bar somewhere chattingwith his "paesani", as he fondly usedto call them, about the old days;many of them will have been men·tioned in this very article as he badefarewell to them on their passing.

Pino always took much troubleto express condolences to the families of those old inhabitants of "theHill" who had departed this life andnow it my duty to express thecondolences, sincere and profound,

of all those at BACKHILL 10 Pino's wife ofover SO years, Delinda, tohis children Rosalindaand Mario, to his sonin-law and daughter-in•.law, to his grandchildrenTina, Tony, Carla andTony and great-grandsonSonny, all of whombrought him so much joy.We share the sorrow ofall his family.

To Pino I say "Ciao"and heartfelt "Grazie".

His retirement was BACKHILL'sgain for in his retirement he devotedhimself to this regular feature, "TheHill", after a series of introductoryarticles in the editions of February ,March and April 1981. He alsodedicated much time and effort topromoting his "Quartiere" to theworld at large, participating in exhibitions, appearing in t.v... programmes and films, assisting jour.nalists, authors and students who,wished to study, write about orreport on the old Italian quarter.

Apart from his family to whichhe was devoted, his great pride andjoy was the Coach and Horsesfootball club of the 1940s and 'SOSof which he was Chairman, Heconsidered it, rightly so, the bestfootball team that the Italian com-'munity had ever produced.

I first met Pino when I inter-.viewed him for the series of articlesmentioned above; and what a pieceof good luck that encounter provedto be for the magazine at a timewhen we were struggling to gathermaterial to sustain this feature. Pinotook up the challenge with enthu-.

It is with much sadness and adeep sense of loss that I report thedeath of Pino Mac;stri, for manyyears BACKHILL's local historian,who died during the night of 3rd/4thJuly 1992.

Born Giuseppe Mario GiovanniMaestri, the son of Luigi Maestriand Rosina Domini on 17th August1916 at 21 Eyre Street Hill in theheart of "11 Quartiere Italiano",Pino, as he came to be known by all,never moved far from his place ofbirth and always retained a pro-.found affection and a strong attach.ment towards the old Italian quarterand the community spirit found init.

Pino was one of five children.he had two· brothers Romco andMario and two sisters Giulietta andElena. Mter a lifetime of hard work(Pino like many of his contemporaries le!~ school at a young age.14) in the watchmaking, floor-laying,catering, and statuette trades - and aspell in the Army - Pino finished his,":orking life with the Post Office.

Utilini is one of the lucky artists picked toexhibit. Her main topic of interest is theweddings of long ago This year she decided on aVictorian wedding breakfast, hence the title"Wedding breakfast'of Myrtle and Tobias". Shealso gives her characters. names from that era.

Recently Ron Berti; a good friend ofNelda's, presented her with a book entitled"Italians Forward" about the old Italian immigrants coming to England circa turn of thecentury. In it is a wonderful old photograph of awedding which has givcn Nclda an idea for apicture. Nelda thinks it would be lovely to sce apainting of an Italian wedding hanging in theSummer Exhibition.

The exhibition is open from June 7th August 16th daily from 10·6.

Un elima festoso, allegro e familiare ha accompagnato il pomeriggio degli ospiti al Centro Scalabrini. Nel suoindirizzo di saluto, iI Cav. Franco Sistina ha ringraziato gli ospiti e gli amici per la partecipazione. 11 Cav. Sistinaha anche spiegato ehe iI profitto della f"esta sara' devoluto parte per una gita e parte per portare avanti le visiteagli anziani. Nel suo intervento non e' ::mancato il ricordo di coloro che hanno dato la vha per la Iiberta' dellaRepubblica. .

Sempre nel contesto della lotta di Liberazione, sono stati presentati e decorati una coppia di partigioni. .Sitratta del signor Arturo Skrobot e della signora Mirella A1ibani Skrobot. 11 primo, un soldato polacco, che haavuto iI coraggio di disertare I'esereito tedcsco per arruolarsi nelle file dei partigiani operanti a Massa Carrara, haricevuto un riconoscimentodall'Assoeiazione NazionalePartigiani d'Italia e una meda·glia d'argento dalla Federa·zione Italiani nel Mondo.

Ci'sono i Collettoridelle offerte durante la Mcssa, i Lcttori, iChierichetti: questi eurano principalmente hlIiturgia. Vi sono le nostre Signote Cattolicheche si danno tanto da fare per organizzare leattivita' della Chiesa come iI Bazaar e altro:ma principalmente siamo estremamente gratia tutte qucste ·nostre Signore perehe~ ·sonoquelle che organizzano tutti i costumi dellaProcessione e coordinano tutti i gruppi che vanno nella sfilata.

sono arrivati ad un accordo diprineipio su di "un piano d'azione"per promuovere iI turismo presso iconsumatori e favorire le iniziativelocali; iI piano avra' la durata di treanni (dal 1 gennaio 1993) e perqucsto periodo sono stati accordati18 milioni di ceu. 11 Parlamentoeuropeo, nella sua qualita' di autorita' budgettaria, dovra' confermareiI finanziamento. La Commissioneeuropca, che aveva proposto lasomma di '20 milioni di ecu, sara'incaricata di attuare iI piano e senecessario, potra' decidere anchealtre iniziative per far fronte adimpreviste evoluzioni del settore.

In generale, le misure previstevogliono migliorare la conoscenzadel settore e aumentare la coerenzadelle azioni. In particolare, iI pianosi propone d'intervenire a favore diuno scaglionamento delle vacanze edi promuovere anche altri settori,come quello del turismo culturale,del turismo sociale, del turismo"giovane" e della tutela ambientale.Tra le iniziative previste vi sonoanche azioni transnazionali, attivita'di formazione e la promozione delturismo europeo nei pacsi terzi. Jacopo Bellini, a painter of,Venice, finding himself in th~t citywithout any- competitor to equalhim, kept growing in credit andfame that he was the greatest a'ndmost reknown man in his profes~

sion. There were born to him twosons strongly inclined to the arts:

one was Giovanni, and the otherGentile. Jacopo himself with alldiligence taught them the rudimentsof drawing; but no long time passedbefore each surpassed his father by agreat measure.

The first works that broughtfame to Jacopo were the portraits ofGiorgio Cornaro and of Caterina,Queen of Cyprus. Jacopo withdrewto work entirely by himself as didhis two sons, each of them devotinghimself to his own studies in the art.Although these brothers retired tolive each by himself, neverthelessthey had so much respcct for eachother, and both had such reverence

for their father, that each, extollingthe other, ever held himself inferiorin merit.

The first works of Giovanni weresome portraits from the· life of DogeLoredano. For the altar of S.Giobbe in the Church of that Saint,the same man painted a panel withthe Madonna with the Child in herarms, with nude figures of· S. Joband S. Sebastian beside whom are S.Dominic, S; Francesco, S. JOhn, andS. Augustine. Another work to be

seen is a panel on the high altar ofS. Domenico in Pesaro. In theChurch of S. Zaceheria in Venice,there is a panel of Our Lady andmany saints.

No long time after, certain por-·traits were taken to Turkey whichcaused such astonishment and marvel to the Emperor, that he deman·ded that the master of the workshould be sent to him. Whereuponthe Senate, considering that Gio-·vanni had reached an age when hecould ill endure hardships determined to send his brother Gentile,believing that he would do as well asGiovanni. Therefore, they brought

him safely to Constantinople. Gentile had been there no long timewhen he portrayed the EmperorMahomet from the life so well, thatit was held :i miracle. That Emperorasked Gentile whether he had thecourage to paint his own portrait;and Gentile, having answered "Yes",did not allow many days to passbefore he had made his own portraitwith such resemblance that itappeared alive.

The Emperor one day sum·moned Gentile to his presence, andmade him demand what ever favourhe wished for it would be granted tohim. Gentile, like the modest andupright ·man· that he was, asked fornothing save a lelter of recommen·,dation to the most Illustrious Signoria of Venice, his native city.. Thiswas· wrilten and afterwards he wasdismissed with honourable gifts.

Departing from Constantinople,Gentile returned to Venice, wherehe was received with gladness by hisbrother Giovanni and by almost thewhole city. Gentile made but fewworks after his return; finally, having almost reached the age of 80, hepassed to the other life and wasgiven honourable burial by hisbrother Giovanni in S. Giovanni ePaolo.

Giovanni, went on doing a liltlework, although he was old, to passthe time. Having devoted himself tomaking portraits from the life, heintroduced into Venice the fashionthat everyone of a certain rankshould have his portrait paintedeither by him or by some othermaster.

Finally, Giovanni passed fromthis life overcome by old age, leaving an eternal memorial in theworks that he had made both in hisnative city and abroad. He washonourably buried in the same tombin which he had laid his brotherGentile to rest.

One of the finest coloraturasopranos ever was the great ItalianLuisa Tctrazzini.

The voice itself was that of a fullrich soprano with an amazing tech·nique and by all accounts a big voicethat carried. For years she had madethe rounds of the Italian provincialcircuit plus Spain, Portugal and evenRussia. As well as the leggero rolesshe also sang Lconora-in La Forzadel Destino, Mathilde in -GuglielmoTell, even Aida.Then in 1907,when she was past36, (in those daysnot in the firsfflush of youth), shpwas engaged byCovent Garden tosing in La Traviatain the unfashion·able autumn sea·son. In fact themanagement triedto pull out· of thecontract and triedto stop her fromsinging because theseason was notgoing well. Tetraz·zini would not hearof it. The manage·ment were alsoworried of upsetting the reigning diva of the Garden,Nellie Melba. On Saturday 2ndNovember to a half filled foggyHouse, Tetrazzini made her Londondebut. Harry Higgins, the ManagingDirector, had heard her in rehersaland at once realised this would beno ordinary Violetta.

He made sure all the press werethere. By the end of Act One a starhad been born. She held on to hertop E Aat, picked up the long trainof her gown and walked off stag~, allthe While filling the House with aphenomenal sound. The audiencegrew in size as people rushed to'phone or send messages to friendsto come and witness this miracle.

There is one thing that can besaid without fear of contradiction.Being national team manager leaves

you cruellyexposed in thespotlight.Sadly; Taylorhas not developed and adapted to the veryspecial needs ofthe job. Hebegan byattempting toimprove.on therelations withthe press whichhad reached alow pitchtowards theend of Rob-son's reign.

The free talking Taylor gave interviews to everyone who asked at thebeginning but by the time of theEuropean Nations Championship inSweden he had retreated as deepinto his shell as Robson. Indeed,some of the sentiments being.expressed were almost an echo ofthose of his predecessor. He demanded respect from the British pressand p·ublic. But respect must beearned. Winning is important butdefeat can be tolerated if knowledgable observers can see for themselves the logic and sense in theteam chosen and tactics employed.

No one can have anything butsympathy for the injury predicamentwhich Taylor found himself in. Parker, Wright, Walker, Pearcc·was asgood a defence as anywhere in theworld. Gascoigne in· midfield andLineker up front were two flairplayers who would walk into anyinternational side. By .the time ofSweden, only Walker and Linekerwould be available for selection. To

make matters worse, Rob Jones,Gary Stevens, Lee Dixon, JohnBarnes, Gary Pallister were also allruled out through injury. But itwould be dangerous to allow thisquite legitimate excuse to cloudmore serious issues.

The relative success which cameat the death· for Robson was largelybased upon. his belated decision tooperate a sweeper or to be moreprecise "three in the middle at theback" system centred around Mark.Wright. Just before the competitionin Sweden began, Taylor declaredthat England had not won a majorfootballing competition for 26 yearsbased upon more traditional systemsof 4-4-2 and he was going to employthis sweeper tactic. This was asomcwhat strange comment to makebearing in mind he had not real~'{

employed it to any significant degreein the matches during his two yearsof managerial control, in spite of itssuccess in the last World Cup.

It turned out to be a very unwisemove pUblicly to declare his style ofplay because Mark Wright promptlygot injured in the warm up matchagainst Finland. However, I do havesome sympathy with Taylor. The 48hour delay on the part of Wrightand Liverpool in notifying the England Management Team of the in·jury, was truly remarkable and inexplicable.

The injury did mean, however,that there was no obvious replace.ment for the Liverpool player toperform the sweeper role. There wastalk that Calvin Palmer of SheffieldWednesday might be moved. backinto this position and indeed thistactic was tried in the match againstFrance. But such matters should notbe left to chance. I was reminded ofthe comment passed in the October1990 issue • "A national managermust pick players to suit his tactics...the side needs a settled methodof play so that if one player getsinjured, his replacement can slot inand perform the same role."

Mishandledby Taylor?

If Taylor genuinely believed thatthe. sweeper system was the one toadopt then England should havebeen playing it for the past twoyears and people selected for thesquad during that period who wereprepared and ready to act as coverfor Wright. Instead, we had a classieexample of a manager seleCting tactics to suit the players at his disposal. Sadly in Taylor's case thismeant three different sets of tacticsfor three different combinations ofplayers for each of the three games.

Even worse, I have to say that Ihave my doubts about Taylor's willingness to have big name players inhis side. History. probably recordsthat Bryan Robson ·was allowed toretire from the international scenetoo soon. We should not forget thatPaul Gascoigne had been droppedby the England manager and considered unsuitable for the away qualifying match against the Republicof Ireland. Waddle was never givenan extended chance to show. hisskills and was languishing back inMarseille while players such as AndySinton and Tony Daley were performing the winger's role for Eng-·land in the second most importantfootball championship in the World.Admittedly high hopes were pinnedon Barnes but let us not forget thatTaylor had known the Liverpoolplayer since he was an unknownyoungster at Watford. Last, but notleast, newspapers contained rumoursof a split between the manager andhis star player, Gary Lineker. Inspite of all Taylor's explanations, Istill find it totally inexplicable thatLineker was substituted half waythrough the second half againstSweden in a match which Englandhad to win in order to qualify forthe semi final. There is no morepopular sportsman than Linekerwho had publicly declared that thischampionship was going to mark theend of his international last gameand he needed just one goal toequal Bobby Charlton's record. Iaccept fully that sentiment must playno part in managerial decisions.Taylor had to win the match. Thefact remains, however, that Linekeris by far and 'away 'England's best

goal scorer at this level. He hadmade the only goal which Englandhad scored in the championship. Hismissed penalty apart against Brazil,he 'Was not really in the troughwhich many people spoke about.The simple truth is that he was notscoring goals because he was notgetting any sort of service at allfrom what was at best a workmanlike bultotally uninspired Englandmid field. If anyone could haveturned the match England,s way inthe dying minutcs, it was Lineker,.but with his substitution, all hopewent out of the window and all thatrespect which Taylor so dcsperatelycraved from the BritiSh public waslost_ It will take a super humaneffort on his part ever to get it back.

One supreme irony is that at thetime of the 1990 World Cup, I wascritical of theselection forthe squad ofTrevor Stevenan d NeilWebb. Twoyears later Iwas crying outfor them to bepiched. Webbwas not chosen until thefin~1 gameeven thoughhe was theonly personwh 0 couldtruly pass theball in themiddle' of thefield. Stevenhad been England's bcst mid fieldpla:yer in the first two matchcs butwas rewarded by being dropped forthe crucial game against Sweden.

Defeat is not such a bad thing iflessons are learned but Taylor seemsto believe that Sweden have taughthim to rely upon his instinets of the10nJ; ball game at Watford. If that iswhat Taylor plans for the next twoyears then one 'must seriously qucstion whether England will even qualify for the World Cup in 1994.

I have· been very critical in thepast of football clubs who havesacl<ed their managers. without giv-.

ing them a proper chance to showwhat they are capable of. In Taylor'scase, however, I fear that after twoyears no logical team plan or teamselection has emerged and the Football Association should have thecourage to admit they made a mistake and sadly appoint a new manwithout further ado.· With TerryVenablcs, we might just win theWorld Cup.

If ever anyone needed the lessonthat defeat need not be ignominious,- look at Scotland's performance.They lost against the World Champions, Germany,' and EuropeanChampions, Holland, but playedsome impressive football in theprocess. With more limitedresourCes available to him than Graham Taylor, his team's performancegives hope for the future and the

supporters wenthome happy indefeat.

For many, bothHolland and Germany looked aclass above anybody else in thetournament untilDenmark suddenlyfound their formagainst CIS. Ithought they werea little lucky tohold on againstHolland in thesemi finals andwin the penaltyshoot out. Not toomany pcople sheda tear by the Ger

man defeat. But the Danish victorywas truly remarkable. I thoughtUEFA had made the wrong decisionin banning Yugoslavia and Denmarkturned up as substitutcs for thecompetition on only a week's notice.They showed what can be done,however, with a fighting team spiritand that essential elemcnt of flaircombined with organisation. Theway in which they overcame alladversities to win the championshipwas a true credit to their nation.

Mettetcla nel fomo pre-scaldato n04/180C. per 1ora.

Lasciatela raffredare prima di levarla dalla tortiera.

12 oz caster sugar12 oz ricotta12 oz plain flour8 oz butter or margarine1 sachet of Pan degl'Angelior l!loz baking powder.3 eggsgrated rind of 2 lemons

Method:

Beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.Beat in the eggs, one at a time.Fold in the flour, baking powder and grated rind

of the lemons.Mash the ricotta and add it to the cake mixture.Put. thc mixture into a greased 10" loose bottom

cake tin..Bake in a prc-heated oven no.4/180C for 1 hour.Allow thc cake to cool before removing from thc

tin.

Decoration:

You can simply sprinkle with 2 tablespoons oficing sugar
