The World War broke out in 1914; Wilfred joined the Britain army in 1915 and had a long experience of trench warfare at its dirtiest level. Few days to the end of the war, Owen, without knowing that the war is to end and went to fight in order to help his fellow men. He died in the course of the war on the bank of the Oise- Sambre Canal, near Ors in Northern France on 4th November, 1918.

Background of the Poem.Since Wilfred Owen died in the course of the war, this confers a special emotive touch can be gleaned, a touch of one who knew what he is talking about and could be easily believed. The lines are concentrated in the emphasis of first – hand knowledge and transcend the bitterness of what he experienced. In May 1916 -17, he was shell – shocked and was invalided for months at Edinburg. It was while he convalesced at the Craig Lockhart War Hospital that he wrote many of his war poems.
