BACKCOUNTRY NORDIC SKI TOURING IN NORTHERN UTAH 01 to 10 February 2020 #2029 Utah is known for ‘The Greatest Snow on Earth ® ’ and from experience rightfully so but what is not widely known is that snow exists as abundantly just a little north of the usual Park City/ Cottonwood Canyon area. This adventure will take us to the Cache Valley area of northern Utah. Nestled at the foot of the nearly 10,000-foot high Bear River Range lies Logan, Utah and this will be our base of operation. From here we will ski surrounded by majestic peaks and rugged backcountry of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Within the forests are the Wellsville, the Bear Lake and the Bear River Mountain ranges, ranging in elevation from 7000 to 10,000 feet. The ranges are characterized by glacial basins, long drainages, and steep peaks. The landscape features open flats, aspen and coniferous forests, alpine tundra, subalpine meadow, and lakes, all buried under a deep blanket of powder snow. This 10-day adventure will feature daily tours within the Logan Ranger District. All tours will be day trips in the 5 to 8 mile range (~4 to 6 hours) at an altitude of 6000-8000 feet. AMC Adventure Travel excursions are rated on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being the easiest and 5 the most strenuous. This ski tour is rated a 3. Incredible vistas of the high peaks to the east and west reward your efforts. This trip is designed for the intermediate skier, no beginners please. We ask that you have solid skills including good uphill, and downhill control and turning ability. We generally ski in areas that may be tracked by others, but we normally do not ski in “groomed” areas.

BACKCOUNTRY NORDIC SKI TOURING INNORTHERN UTAH

01 to 10 February 2020#2029

Utah is known for ‘The Greatest Snow on Earth®’ and from experience rightfully so but what is not widely known is that snow exists as abundantly just a little north of the usual Park City/ Cottonwood Canyon area. This adventure will take us to the Cache Valley areaof northern Utah. Nestled at the foot of the nearly 10,000-foot high Bear River Range lies Logan, Utah and this will be our base of operation. From here we will ski surroundedby majestic peaks and rugged backcountry of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.

Within the forests are the Wellsville, the Bear Lake and the Bear River Mountain ranges, ranging in elevation from 7000 to 10,000 feet. The ranges are characterized by glacial basins, long drainages, andsteep peaks. The landscapefeatures open flats, aspen andconiferous forests, alpinetundra, subalpine meadow, andlakes, all buried under a deepblanket of powder snow. This10-day adventure will featuredaily tours within the LoganRanger District. All tours willbe day trips in the 5 to 8 milerange (~4 to 6 hours) at analtitude of 6000-8000 feet.AMC Adventure Travelexcursions are rated on a scaleof 1 to 5, with 1 being theeasiest and 5 the moststrenuous. This ski tour is rated a 3.

Incredible vistas of the high peaks to the east and west reward your efforts. This trip is designed for the intermediate skier, no beginners please. We ask that you have solid skills including good uphill, and downhill control and turning ability. We generally ski inareas that may be tracked by others, but we normally do not ski in “groomed” areas.

Participants should be in good physical condition and wider backcountry Nordic equipment is recommended. The tours selected will emphasize touring and scenic pleasure over mostly moderate terrain. The trip is not designed for maximum vertical or extreme skiing.

An itinerary will by provided prior to departing but it should be noted that these tours are planned in advance may require changes for reasons of safety, transportation or lodging availability, and unforeseeable circumstances (such as weather considerations, natural disasters in areas to be visited, or recommendations of governmental agencies). The leaders reserve the right to make such changes as necessary, both before and during the trip.

Please view this link for highlights from recent similar trips (B/C Skiing Highlights). Trip size is limited to 12 so early application is strongly encouraged.

When you participate in this activity, you should be in proper condition for the challenges outlined in this prospectus and equipped with the appropriate gear as stated. You should always be aware of the risks involved and conduct yourself accordingly. You are ultimately responsible for your own safety. Prior to your acceptance as a participant in this trip, you will be asked to

discuss your capabilities and experience with us. We may also request references to confirm your fitness level and suitability for participating in trip activities. This trip is designed so that everyone may experience our adventure in Northern Utah through sharedparticipation in activities and tasks in an organized group environment. AMC travelers are known for their cooperative efforts, and expectations are that all participants will be considerate of others sharing this AMC Adventure Travel experience.

It may happen on any trip that a trip member is or becomes unable to participate in one ormore of the planned activities. Leaders in their sole judgment have the right and obligation to refuse participation in any activity to any group member for reasons of safety, whether it be of the group or of the individual. Illness, injury or lack of proper gear or fitness for a particular activity are examples of some conditions that might result in a participant’s being unable to perform one or more activity. Leaders may try to find asubstitute activity for the trip member, but this may not always be possible.

We fly into Salt Lake City, pick up vehicles, and head for our home base in Logan. The vehicles will also be used for our transportation to the best snow for most of our ski tours.

We will stay at an AAA 3-diamond rated hotel in Logan. Typical accommodations will be 2 persons per room (queen beds). Breakfast and dinner will be provided.

The cost of approximately $2675.00 includes airfare from Boston (there may be slight differences if flying from other cities), all breakfasts and dinners (except while in route), lodging and vehicle fees. Not included are costs for lunches, insurance, airport departure taxes, items of a personal nature. Trip fee is based upon current airfares, transfer fees, vehicle rental and hotel rates. Increases must (unfortunately) result in increased cost. There is an additional fee of $60 for each non-AMC member (consider joining). All travel arrangements must be made through the leaders. Requests for early arrivals or later departures must be communicated to the leader no later than the 1st of October. A reservation deposit of $675.00 per person is due upon application. The balance is due in two payments: $1000.00 by October 1 and $1000.00 due by November 15.

Cancellation fee will be based on many factors but cancellation will not be allowed to raise the cost to the other participants or leaders. The minimum fee will be $200. Note that any expenses incurred on your behalf such as non-refundable airfare, will be assessedat full value.

The trip fee that you pay to us includes coverage for emergency medical evacuation and assistance through an emergency service provider. This is not standard medical insurance or trip cancellation insurance. It will cover up to $5,000 for accident expenses (and sickness expenses only for international trips) and up to $200,000 for emergency evacuation and repatriation. Coverage only includes the dates of travel of the official AMC trip, so coverage for early arrival or trip extension is not included. This coverage includes access to global emergency assistance services that provides the support you or your family may need in a crisis, beyond what the AMC and/or the volunteer leaders maybe able to provide. It will also document the incident should a claim need to be filed.. To apply, you must complete and submit the Participant Application, Confidential Health Questionnaire, and Acknowledgement and Assumption of Risk and Release form, which can be downloaded from the following web folder: (AMC Northern Utah Documents) or by contacting the leader, and submitting the $675 deposit. You will be considered qualified for the trip when the leaders have determined by conversation with you that youand the trip seem to be a good match. You will be formally accepted, and your check willbe deposited, when the trip leaders confirm the trip has sufficient number of participants and is going as planned. Make checks payable to AMC – Northern Utah and mail with application/medical form and Assumption of Risk form to leader. Space is very limited and reservations must be made early. The price for this excursion is based on quotes or estimates obtained at the time the trip was submitted to the Adventure Travel Committee for approval. The final price of the trip will be adjusted in accordance with the best final arrangements we can make. If the trip’s financial position is strong enough at the start, the leaders may make partial refunds during the trip, in the form of payments toward some meals and/or free time activities, which would otherwise not be included. Trip participants will share any savings we achieve, as well as any cost increases we incur. Our cost estimates are conservative, and so a refund is considerably more likely than a

price increase. All Adventure Travel trips are run on a non-profit basis and refunds, if any, are issued after the trip’s financial accounting is complete.
