Curriculum and Instruction Move to the regional cluster model

Highlights & Improvements

School Organization & Support

– Organized schools into regions and nine high school clusters, each with corresponding middle and elementary schools

– Staffed all schools with assistant principals, gifted teachers and student support services

Registration

– Created a single, district-wide enrollment window of approximately one week which opened in late July

– Allowed parents to verify student information and provide proof of residence early (in Spring) through a streamlined re-registration process

– Created an online school locator that allows parents to find school zone information for any address

– Common Core Georgia Performance Standards

• Trained year-round school staff and instructional coaches on CCGPS

• Provided CCGPS training modules to principals to support training for teachers during pre-planning

• Created lesson plan data base for teachers

– Teacher Keys Effectiveness System (TKES)

• Completed Day 1 of TKES training for all Principals, Assistant Principals and Academy Leaders (Days 2 and 3 are scheduled for August)

Operations/Transportation Changes to transportation eligibility and bus routes

Highlights and Improvements

Walk Zones: Enforced Board regulation ED-R(1) which sets walk zone distances

‒ Atlanta Public Schools shall provide transportation in the following circumstances:

• Elementary school students who live one (1) mile or more from the zoned school

• Middle and high school students who live one and one half (1 ½) miles or more from the zoned school

Magnet Programs: Out-of-zone students enrolled in magnet school programs received MARTA passes and no longer travel to school on APS school buses

NCLB Transfers: Out-of-zone students enrolled in schools as a result of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Transfers no longer qualify for school bus transportation

Extended work days to address concerns and make adjustments as necessary

Pledged to address all voicemail messages and investigate each concern; called 400+ parents already

Created dedicated voicemail to give parents an option of leaving a message when lines are busy

Assigned additional staff to respond to incoming calls and messages

Enhancements to broadcast up-to-date transportation information is occurring through multiple communication channels, including: ‒ Automated phone notifications ‒ Printed notices from schools ‒ District and school websites ‒ Social media platforms ‒ PSAs aired on APS Cable, Channel 22, and PBA 30

Operations/Human Resources Manage staffing changes from school closures and redistricting in addition to

normal staffing needs related to Day One

Highlights and Improvements

HR division extended work days in preparation for Day One

– Hired 288 new teachers

– Made 717 administrative transfers

Vacancies

– 20 total vacancies in core content positions and 36 total vacancies in "other" areas such as music, art, foreign language, special education

• Elementary School: 3 general education vacancies, 1 "other" vacancies

• Middle School: 1 core content vacancy, 17 "other" vacancies

• High School: 16 core content vacancies, 18 "other" vacancies

Operations/Facilities and IT Implementation of school closure and redistricting plan

School Closures and Redistricting

– Moved classrooms, instructional material, technology and student records for five closed schools

– Reallocated assets at Adamsville/Miles ES and Grove Park/Woodson ES to transform schools into K-2 and 3-5 campuses

– Relocated Coan MS to Eastlake ES campus

– Relocated M.H. Jackson HS to former Coan MS campus

– Installed modular classroom mini-campus at Inman MS

– Moved sixth grade instructional materials from Kennedy and Parks MS

Operations/Safety, Nutrition and Finance Implementation of school closure and redistricting plan

Highlights and Improvements

Security

‒ School Safety launched a new safety model pilot in the Douglas Cluster

‒ Trained and placed crossing guards at key intersections across the district

Nutrition

– Complied with new federal requirements that each student must have at least one fresh fruit or vegetable

– Successfully piloted APS Salad Bowl in year-round schools

– Launched APS Salad Bowl in middle and high schools on Day One; elementary school will start on August 20, 2012

Finance

‒ Established School-Based Business Partners program to provide more direct support to schools
