Welcome to Our Classroom!
• Thank you for attending this important event!
• Tonight, we will discuss the following:

Classroom Procedures
• Supplies– Thank you very
much for getting all supplies in and some additional items that we can use in our class!!
– Storing items until students need them (pencils, expo markers, and post-its)
• Rules that foster a respectful and caring environment

Classroom Procedures
• Each day your child should have:– Completed homework– Homework folder– Homework Assignment notebook– Bag of Books– Water bottle– Lunch box/bag– Snack– Lunch money/ticket in labeled bag (if
buying)
Lunch and Snack
• Bringing lunch: please provide a lunch bag/box
• Buying lunch: please place the money in a baggie or envelope labeled with his/her name.
• Healthy Snack- Each day• Water Bottles
• Juices will be saved for lunch and snack time.
Homework
• Homework will be assigned Monday-Thursday
• Please check your child’s “HW Assignments” notebook each night.
• If your child is unable to complete the homework, and you find you are unable to help, please send me a note the next day.
Homework
• Reading– Reading for 15 minutes– Reading Log– Reading over the weekend
• Math– Home Links or practice sheet
• One Additional Assignment– Word Study– Social Studies– Health
Folders• Homework Folder
– Please check this for homework and daily notices.– Important notes for me or the office should be in this
folder.
• Friday Folder– Most notices and corrected work will be sent home
in the Friday folder.
• Social Studies– Laminated envelope in which children will be
bringing their Social Studies homework.

• In second grade, we cover the following concepts:– Numbers and

Science
• Hands-on investigations.• Investigations are enhanced through
reading and writing activities provided by the programs.

• The Social Studies curriculum is divided into five units of study: – Our Community– Our Past– All About Work– All About Earth– Our Government
• Health will cover a variety of topics ranging from personal hygiene to social well-being.

Star Student• Each student will be featured as the “Star Student” for a
week.• I will send a packet home the week before it is your child’s
turn to be star student.• Your child can complete the packet independently or with
help from the family.• I encourage the children to decorate the packet with
pictures, drawings, etc.• In the packet, there will be a page for you to write a note to
your child explaining why they are a star to you. I will read this note to the class; please send it in with the completed packet on the Monday following the week it was sent home.
Birthdays• If you would like to send in treats for birthdays
please keep in mind the risk of allergies.– Store bought treats only (Dunkin Donuts treats are
acceptable)– Must contain a label with the ingredients– The first ingredient cannot be sugar.– Please do not send whole cakes. Pre-cut and individual
pieces are much easier to pass out to the children.– I will be in touch with parents of children who have
summer birthdays so that we can set something up for those children.
Book Orders
• Our class will be participating in
Scholastic Book orders
• September book order is due Wednesday, September 23rd– Ordering is voluntary.– Our class will earn bonus points which I will
put toward buying new books for our library.– Book orders are a better bargain than in
stores.
Highlights Magazine
• Yellow slip on desk.• Please fill this out and send back to
school.• Even if you choose not to buy a
subscription to Highlights, our class will receive benefits for just getting a “no” response.

Parent Volunteers
• Irwin School encourages parental involvement by allowing volunteers to come into the classroom to assist our students
• If you are interested in becoming involved, please let me know.
Field Trips• Second grade will be going to the Battleview
Orchards in Freehold on October 23rd.– Children will eat lunch before leaving for the trip.– Leave Irwin at 11:45 AM– Tour from 12:30-2:00– Return by 2:45– Cost: $6 per person
• Room parents have priority when choosing parent volunteers to attend trips.
PTA
• Entertainment books will be distributed tonight.– Please return them if you choose not
to buy them!
