Backpack, 2-inch binder, paper, pens, highlighters, notebooks, paper.

Pretty quickly, you’re talking $50or more to send one kid off to middleor high school with the needed sup-plies.

Not every parent can afford it.That’s where Crayons to Calculatorscomes in.

Crayons to Calculators collectsschool supplies and cash donationswith the goal of providing fullystocked backpacks to students whoneed them in the St. Vrain Valley andBoulder Valley school districts.

This year, principals in the two dis-tricts expect to need 6,900 backpacks, according to program director Cather-ine Bedell.

About 2,500 of those backpackswill be needed in the St. Vrain ValleySchool District, said Lora Lawrence,Crayons to Calculators coordinatorfor the Education Foundation for the

St. Vrain Valley. The remaining 4,400will be sent to students in the BoulderValley School District.

Steve Payne, principal of Erie HighSchool, said school officials keep

their eyes open for students whodon’t have supplies.

Of course, students aren’t alwaysquick to admit they need assistance.

Payne often asks one of the secre-taries to bring a student to the office, then point out that “extra” suppliesare available, he said.

One student refused help until oneparticular backpack caught his eye,Payne said. After he admitted he likedit, he accepted it, the principal said.

Having cool backpacks is one keyto the program’s success.

“Any kid would be proud to carrythem,” Lawrence said.

Kathy Hall, executive director ofthe education foundation, said the or-

Growing Up

By Lindsey LarsonColorado Hometown Weekly

The Erie Tigers have en-joyed great athletic success atthe Class 3A level, but in thefall of 2010 the school willface the challenge of movingup to 4A competition in allsports except football, whichmoves up from 2A to 3A.

The Tiger football team willcompete in the NorthernLeague with such teams asBerthoud, Mountain View andRoosevelt. The rest of the Erieathletic programs will competein the Tri-Valley League withschools like Windsor, Freder-ick, Fort Morgan, Sterling and

Northridge.Principal Steve Payne esti-

mated Erie’s student popula-tion to be just over 700 by theend of the 2009-2010 schoolyear. By the fall of 2010, hesaid the population should beclose to 780. The minimumpopulation cut-off for 3A foot-ball in the 2010-2011 schoolyear is 601, turning the Tigersfrom a large 2A team into arelatively small 3A team.

Payne said this week hethinks though the Tigers willbe the small fish in a big pond, the teams should still be ableto hold their own.

All that’s lacking now is signa-tures.

The Boulder Valley School District

Due to the summer break, a ratifica-tion vote by BVEA members won’ttake place until BVSD teachers returnfor the start of the 2010-2011 schoolyear. If the two-year agreement is rat-

ified by members, it will then be tak-en up for a final vote by the seven-member Boulder Valley Board of Ed-

but that’s fun,” Payne said. “I thinkall the coaches are excited to makethe move and compete.”

Last fall, Erie’s softball teamsteamrolled its way to a 22-1 recordand an unprecedented 10th Class 3Asoftball title, defeating the BurlingtonCougars, 8-0, in the championshipgame.

With a roster full of soon-to-be se-niors, the Tigers should make thetransition to 4A with little difficulty.

“I think they’re going to do fine,”2010 graduate Jordan Ruiz said.“Personally, I think they’re going tomake it to the state tournament. Ifthey’re the team I know they are, they’re definitely going to make it tothe state tournament.”

Haley David is one of eight Tigerswho will be seniors this year. She saidthe thrill of the unknown may propelthe Tigers to great heights in theirnew classification.

“It’ll be exciting to see how we doin 4A,” David said.

ucation. The BVEA will set the dates for its member-

ship to vote on the tentative agreement.Because the tentative agreement was not rati-

fied by the June 30 legal deadline for BVSD tohave a balanced 2010-2011 budget adopted, thebudget approved in June does not reflect theterms of the new tentative agreement. However,a revision incorporating the terms of the tenta-tive agreement to the 2010-2011 BVSD budgetwill be brought to the school board if the tenta-tive agreement is ratified by BVEA membersand the school board.

The elements of the BVSD/BVEA tentativeagreement for compensation are as follows:

• Two year agreement through 2011-2012• Teacher work year reduced by one non-stu-

dent contact day from 187-186 days (VeteransDay)

• Salary schedule educational attainmentmovement for both years

• Full employee premium cost provided forhealth and dental insurance coverage for bothyears

• Salary schedule experience steps provided
