White light entering prism
Complete the ray diagram to show how white light is dispersed through the prism to form the spectrum of colours
Do now:
Label the colours of the spectrum in order
Does blue or red have the longer wavelength?
Does blue or red have the higher frequency?

The Doppler Effect
The change in the apparent frequency of a wave due to the motion of the wave
source
e.g. the engine noise of an F1 car as it drives past. It sounds higher when it is
coming toward you, lower when it is going away
1842, Prague
How it happens
• Waves (eg sound) move out in all directions from the source at speed vw
• Two observers standing either side of the source will both hear the same frequency as the wavelength reaching their ears is the same.
vw
How it happens
• If the source is moving with speed vs then the wavelength observed by the person in front of the source will be shorter (and hence the pitch higher) than the observer standing behind
