Your options for Medicine at MonashMonash University provides two options for people interested in pursuing a career as a doctor.

Our five-year direct ent ry medical program gives you the opportunity to start on the path to becoming a doctor immediately after completing your secondary schooling.

The Direct Entry Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Honours) degree, offered at the Clayton campus, is only available to applicants who have completed the equivalent of Year 12 studies within two years of applying and who have not undertaken any other tertiary study.

Monash also offers a graduate entry medical degree. The Graduate entry Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Honours) program is available to students who have undertaken another degree with a significant and broad amount of biomedical science content. The first year of this four year degree is offered at Monash University’s School of Rural Health – Churchill with the further three years undertaken in clinical locations around metropolitan Melbourne or regional Victoria.

Course outlineThe medical curriculum in both programs has a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach. It provides a continually expanding level of medical experience, starting in the first semester of the course. In the early years of the programs you will learn about the medical sciences in the context of their relevance to patient care. The basic medical and behavioural sciences (anatomy, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, psychology and sociology) are introduced within interdisciplinary units. In all of these units there is a major focus on clinical issues through case studies.

The curriculum is designed as an integrated program incorporating four themes:

Personal and Professional Development; Population, society, health and illness; Scientific basis of clinical practice; and Clinical skills.

Semester-long units are taught by staff from a range of departments across the Faculty in an interdisciplinary fashion.

Later in the course (Year 3 for direct entry and Year B for graduate entry), clinical teaching builds upon and reinforces this strong scientific foundation with an emphasis on clinical communication skills.

International studentsWe offer about 65 places in our direct entry program for international students and a further 15 places in our graduate entry program, giving international students more opportunities to study at one of Australia’s most respected and prestigious medical schools.

The program is offered to international applicants on a full-fee paying basis.

In 2015, the fee for the first year of the course is AUD$65,400. Additionally, other expenses students would expect to incur include accommodation, transport and living expenses, plus textbooks and stationery.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Applicants who anticipate obtaining permanent residency by the commencement of the course are advised to contact MBBS admissions for further information. Entry requirements for local applicants can be found at: monash.edu/4531

InternshipAny offer of a place in a Monash University medical course is made on the understanding that Monash in no way guarantees any period of internship in an Australian or Malaysian hospital. Internship places are not allocated by Monash University. As a result, our international students should expect to complete their internships in their home country.

When Sathisvaran Kanavathy was exploring medical school options, he found that Monash University’s direct entry MBBS program had a strong focus on interdisciplinary learning that was very appealing to him.

“It was evident to me that in addition to receiving a good medical education, there was also a focus on encouraging interaction and engagement with the community in Monash’s degree,” Sathis explains. “I knew that I stood to gain much from the Monash MBBS program in terms of holistic development both on a personal and professional level.”

Sathis’ decision to study Medicine was driven by his desire to impact on people’s lives but to also be constantly challenged in his profession.

“Medicine amalgamates science with the ability to communicate and touch people’s lives,” he said. “And being a constantly evolving field, it offers challenges that I seek in my professional career.”

His application to Monash began with a Singapore-based international education agent who handled all aspects of the process from student visa applications to immunisation requirements making it a very simple process from start to finish.

Now in his fourth year of the MBBS program, Sathis says that the most enjoyable part of the course to date has been his experience in the Community Based Placement (CBP) where he had the opportunity to spend 14 weeks at a school for students with physical disabilities.

“I met many wonderful children and staff and learnt a great deal about engaging the student in decision-making processes – which is very similar to how we deliver healthcare in a patient-centered way.”

While study is a priority for Sathis he has also immersed himself in the student community joining MUMUS (Monash University Medical Undergraduates’ Society), the Surgical Interest Group and he is also an active committee member of the Singapore Medical Society of Victoria.

A keen sportsman, Sathis also participates in the social sports league in basketball and is a volunteer with TeamMONASH™, which allows him to meet people and encourage health and wellbeing within the community.

“What I like most about Monash is the student life. There is a strong sense of belonging that comes with the Monash experience and with such an international and culturally-diverse student population, it is amazing how many friends from different countries you can make!”

Sathis’ advice to those considering Medicine as a career is to understand that it is a life long journey. “If you really want to do Medicine, talk to a doctor about their experiences and find out what they find challenging and what gives them satisfaction.

“Strong determination and plenty of hard work would be the formula to get you to where you want to be!”

Sathisvaran Kanavathy

The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences will determine those applicants who are to be offered an interview. Invitation to interview will be based on overall performance in the ISAT for the direct entry program or GAMSAT/MCAT results for graduate entry.

We recommend that applicants sit their tests as early as possible in the year that they are applying for the medicine program to ensure that the results required for admission are received in time.

At Monash we use the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI). This format allows us to determine which applicants possess the necessary personal qualities required to succeed in the MBBS course. The MMI format allows each applicant to be assessed by trained interviewers. MMI stations will comprise a series of scenarios and associated questions focusing on an applicant’s relevant personal qualities including: motivation, communication, critical thinking, ethical/empathetic reasoning.

Interviews are conducted in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. Please see 2015/16 dates as listed on the reverse of this brochure.

Once your results from your final year of study are available, Monash considers all three components to make final offers to the direct entry program.

Admissions Requirements for the Direct Entry MBBS (CRICOS Code 082650J)

International applicants must complete the following to be eligible for admission:

1. ISAT (International Student Admissions Test)

2. Multiple Mini Interview (MMI)

3. Year 12 or equivalent results

All three requirements contribute equally toward the overall ranking for entry into the course.

Applicants for the direct entry program must not have commenced any other tertiary study prior to applying. Applicants who have commenced any form of tertiary study are ineligible to apply.

Admissions Requirements for the Graduate Entry MBBS(CRICOS Code 082977G)

International applicants for the Graduate Entry MBBS program must meet the following requirements for admission:

1. Completed or in the process of completing a degree with a significant and broad component of biomedical science content with a weighted Grade Point Average (wGPA) of 5.5 out of 7.0. This is a hurdle requirement and will not be used in the final ranking for offers.

2. GAMSAT or MCAT

3. Multiple Mini Interview (MMI)

A combination of applicants’ scores from the GAMSAT/MCAT and the MMI are used when offering places into the Graduate Entry MBBS program.

For further information go to monash.edu/4532

NOTE: The best option for gaining access to our Graduate Entry MBBS program is by undertaking Monash University’s Bachelor of Biomedical Science.
