Through the use of clinical assessment, advanced medical procedures and treatment, paramedics stabilise patients in clinically challenging environments, refer patients to primary and secondary care and provide on-going emergency medical care during transportation. PROGRAMME INFORMATION This programme is designed to prepare students for practice as contemporary ambulance paramedics. It prepares graduates with the skills, knowledge and attitudes to: > Assess and manage the physical, psychological and psychosocial needs of patients undergoing paramedic assessment, treatment and/or transport > Examine the implications of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi on paramedic practice > Develop the professional skills and knowledge to treat people in a culturally sensitive and safe manner > Critically analyse current developments in pre-hospital paramedic practice and the implications for paramedics > Develop professional skills, techniques and knowledge for safe, efficient and effective care in a pre-hospital environment > Function effectively and safely as a health team member in a pre-hospital environment > Apply problem-solving techniques in the planning and implementation of pre-hospital emergency care > Examine in depth and reflect critically upon aspects of the moral, ethical, legal, social, cultural, economic and political implications of paramedic practice QUALIFICATION Graduates gain the Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic) This programme is approved by the Council of Ambulance Authorities and Paramedics Australasia for entry into paramedic practice in New Zealand and Australia BACHELOR OF HEALTH SCIENCE (PARAMEDIC) Gain the skills required to provide emergency and urgent care.
