The Faculty of Fine Arts, one of the premier art schools of India, is dedicated to the education of professional artists and scholars of theory of art for more than half a century. It has been recognized on global level as the foremost institute in India in the field of Visual Arts.

As part of the dissemination and expansion of the art and design curriculum, Faculty of Fine Arts has established in 2013, a National level Design Institute under its auspices.

The Design Institute is named after the alumni of the Faculty and the erstwhile Maharaja of Baroda, Shrimant Ranjitsinh Gaekwad, hence the name, Maharaja Ranjitsinh Gaekwad Institute of Design [MRID].

Programme at MRID

MRID offers design courses at the Graduate and post Graduate levels specializing in Craft and Design, Communication Design, Accessory Design, Ceramic & Glass and Moving Images.

The Degrees offered are Bachelor of Design [B.Des] and Master of Design [M.Des].

Foundation course develops a visual language in student and moulds them to understand their surroundings and environment through developing an eye for observation, perception, imagination, expression and critical appreciation of creative ideas. They learn about basics of drawing, elements and principles of design, perspective, form and structure and go through various workshops where they get orientation towards different material, process, technique, media, various disciplines, their nature and type of work. They also have environmental studies as one of the important parts of curriculum where they visit various craft pockets and design activity based centers to understand cultural, traditional, social, economic aspects and work culture of the related stakeholders. Foundation is common for all disciplines and therefore the overall aim is to introduce conceptual elements, organizing principles, material and creative process used in development of any product and service. Hence students get a good platform to learn, share their ideas relevant to different areas of design and especially the exploration part and develop an insight of contemporary design practice and build up skill, caliber, confidence to fabricate ideas and way to execute them.

The product life cycle has shrunk as the demand for newer and better product has increased due to the insatiable needs to be the best and trendy. The accessory design program is structured to enable students to understand the Modern day life style of people and create either the next generation of products or in some cases, new product categories for them to flaunt.

Ceramic & Glass Design

Design is an unique amalgamation of art, culture, tradition and craft. The Structured course provides basic knowledge and practical skills for further design education with new innovations. Glass and ceramics not only approaches to design as problem solving but create a sensitive approach towards our rich cultural heritage of craft and traditions. Students are sensitized to the design culture through workshop, field trips, educational tours and working in hands with craftsmen and learning skills, techniques, lifestyle and tradition. Instead of instructional education there is a constructive approach of giving back to the tradition with relevant subtle and sensitive refinement. Through these rigorous practices the students are ready to bridge the gap between design, craft and industry.

Craft & Design

There is despair, confusion and misery among millions of Indian artisans faced with rapidly changing markets and intense competition from mass produced products, who otherwise have fine traditional skills of making fine hand crafted products. It is in this context the Craft and Design Program is conceived. The program is expected to sensitizing the learners with craft skills, craft history, craft practices, ethical and socio-cultural values of craft, inherent aesthetics of regional crafts and economic milieu within the crafts are being practiced to create either the next generation of products or in some cases, new product categories.

Moving Images

While the specialized fields of film and video and animation getting more into modalities and technicalities and move away from the aesthetics of the image, the Moving image course offered at MRID look into the traditional structure of the image and traditional ways of communicating with the image. The course introduces the students into 2D and 3D animation, Cinematography, Direction, Set Design, Sound and Visual editing and script writing. Theoretical input into the various genres of movies, history and appreciation are also given through the course.

Communication Design

Every living organism has a desire to communicate. Man has been communicating since the Prehistoric Age to this date through Visuals. With the progress in Technology, it has become a mammoth task for man to communicate properly to others. The Communication Design Programme has been conceived to fulfill this task. It is expected to Design messages in form of Visual Language from print form to ever changing Modern Technology. The students will be introduced to areas of Branding, Publication, Information Design,Interface Design, Interective Design and other areas.

Eligibility

B.DES

A Candidate must have passed HSC (General or Science stream) Examination of Gujarat State or an equivalent examination only, as a REGULAR student with minimum of 50 percent of marks in aggregate only shall be eligible to apply. All students who have appeared in the HSC examination of Gujarat State HSC Education Board or any other equivalent examination in the current academic year only as a REGULAR student with ENGLISH as one of the subject and waiting for the result of the Final Examination can apply. Reservation policies shall be in accordance with the rules of the Government of Gujarat in force from time to time. All the admissions, till the issuance of the Enrollment Certificate, shall be regarded as provisional and subject to confirmation and approval by the appropriate authority of the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.

M.DES

A Candidate who have passed B.Des or BVA or BA/B.Sc/BTech from a recognized University or Diploma from a reputed institute like NID, NIFT, IIT or IICD as a REGULAR student with minimum of 50 per cent of marks in aggregate only shall be eligible to apply.

Admission Process

Admission to B.Des and M.Des Course shall be finalized on the basis of the performance of a student in the Entrance Test comprising of Practical Test, Written Test and Personal Interview.

PRACTICAL TEST: It will be based on finding of skills of the students through

a) Drawing Skills

b) Colour Skills

c) 3D Modeling

d) Design Skills

WRITTEN TEST Written Test would consist of English Language Proficiency, Understanding of Visual Arts, Culture, Design and Craft.

Fee Structure

Total Fees per Year [Approx] Rs. 1,39,000 /-

1) Other Fees would be applicable as per University Rules from Time to Time.

2) Any Fees once paid shall not be refunded under any circumstances.

3) Examination and Hostel Fees (if required) will be additional to above mentioned fees.

Payment of Fees

Candidate shall be given maximum 15 working days to deposit fees. The admission of the candidate, who fail to pay the fees in such given time limit, shall automatically stand as cancelled and the candidate from the waiting list shall be offered the same seat.

Candidates offered admission from the waiting list shall be given 5 working days to deposit the fees.

B.Des 70 Students per batch

M.DES 20 Students per batch

(The specialization for B.Des & M.Des will starts from III and II Semester onwards respectively )*

B.Des Duration 8 Semester/ 4 years

M.DES 4 Semester/ 2 years

Selection criteria

Minimum percentage for the students to be eligible for the First/Second Choice of specialization will be 70% of marks in overall result (practical and theory combined).

Along with marks one must have minimum 80% of attendance in the academic year.

Once the students fulfill the above condition then only he/she is eligible to get his/her choice of specialization as per the number of seats available and the merit score.

Final decision will be by specialization selection committee and will not be changed under any circumstances.
