Dear Friends,

Although by now most commemorations of the German Reformation have ceased, the rest of our 2017-2018 season will continue to explore the ways in which the genius of Lutheran Chorale shaped and continues to inspire composers to the present day.

In 16th century Europe the chorale was used as a structural device or unifying force, known as a cantus firmus, meaning “fixed song”. Since the texts of the chorales were intended to educate the people in the way of faith, words were elevated to equal status with the notes. The effect of the vernacular on the musical language itself was profound.

Virtually every cantata of J.S. Bach either concludes with a chorale or uses one in its opening chorus. To his audience in the 18th century, this would have been a real connecting point to the texts and melodies learned by heart.

In the Romantic era the composition of sacred music took a back seat to the development of chamber music, the symphony and opera. Nevertheless, Brahms and Mendelssohn were conspicuous in their interest and devotion to the music of J.S. Bach and the incorporation of the chorale into their own compositions.

Our program lineup for Winter/Spring 2018 opens with the work of Philadelphia’s own Kile Smith. Mr. Smith drew a great deal of attention to himself as composer with his large-scale Vespers for the Feast of the Epiphany, commissioned and premiered in 2008 by Piffaro, The Renaissance Band, in collaboration with The Crossing choir. Although a concert piece, Smith follows the contours of the traditional Vespers service with its Vesper Psalms and Magnificat as the central work. He also incorporates Lutheran chorales throughout. The Smith Vespers’ central chorale is “How Brightly Shines the Morningstar,” a treatment of the same chorale that J.S. Bach used for the opening movement of his Cantata 1 in 1725.

The chorales of Martin Luther, which have undergone various treatments and elaborations for 500 years, have had an enormous impact on Western culture. For people of faith, the chorale is more than just a song, it is “Proustian”: it instructs, guides, comforts, and accompanies them along the journey of life, from cradle to grave.

Matthew GlandorfMatthew Glandorf has a versatile career as a conductor, teacher, organist, improviser, church musician and composer. Born in Lewisburg, PA, he commenced his early studies in violin (age 4) and piano (age 7), although piano practice was bargained with being allowed to have access to the organ at the church where his father served as the pastor. In 1980, his family moved to Wilhelmshaven, Germany where he began life as a chorister, and further studied organ with Professor Wolfgang Baumgratz at The Cathedral in Bremen. At the age of 16, Matthew began his studies at The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with John Weaver (organ) and Ford Lallerstedt (counterpoint and Music History). Further studies were undertaken at the Manhattan School of Music with McNeil Robinson.

Mr. Glandorf has held his position of Music Director at several historic Philadelphia churches including the Lutheran Church of the Holy Communion, Old Pine Presbyterian Church, Old St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church and Saint Mark's Episcopal Church. He currently serves as music director at Church of the Good Shepherd in Rosemont, PA.

Since 1995, Glandorf has served in the Musical Studies department at The Curtis Institute where he has taught early music history, counterpoint, figured bass, ear training and improvisation. Most recently, he formed the Curtis Collegium, an ensemble that specializes in historical performance practice. He has also taught at Swarthmore College, Westminster Choir College, and the Esther Boyer College of Music at Temple University.

As an organist, Glandorf has appeared as a recitalist throughout the United States, England and Germany as well as a recitalist and conductor for conventions of The Organ Historical Society, American Guild of Organists, and the Association of Anglican Musicians.

Glandorf became artistic director of Choral Arts Philadelphia in 2004. Since 2008, he has served as artistic director of the Philadelphia Bach Festival where he founded the Philadelphia Bach Collegium, a resident chamber ensemble comprised of the region's finest period instrumentalists and scholars.

The Philadelphia Bach Collegium The resident ensemble of the Bach Festival of Philadelphia was founded in 2008 by Matthew Glandorf. The Collegium is comprised of the region’s finest musicians and scholars who specialize in the music of XVII-XVIII centuries. The ensemble is devoted to using historically authentic instruments. The principal players are veterans of the historically informed performance practice movement and are graduates of the leading conservatories and Universities in the Unites States, Great Britain and Holland.

Members of the Collegium are active in the Early Music scene locally, nationally, and internationally. Locally, they serve on the faculties of the Curtis Institute of Music, Temple University, the Eastman School of Music, and Settlement Music School.

Since 2013, as part of Bach At Seven series, the ensemble’s members have designed and presented uniquely crafted programs, thematically related to J.S. Bach, his contemporaries, mentors and those inspired by his music. Some of the most recent programs include: “F.J. Haydn: The Seven Last Words of Christ” (with Franklin Quartet), “Parisian Portraits: French musical portraiture of the 18th century”, “Downstream Bach” (with Night Music). In the 2017-2018 season, the Collegium offers three chamber programs featuring music by J.S. Bach and his sons, Telemann, Buxtehude, Zelenka, and composers from Sweden and Denmark.

Choral Arts Philadelphia

Choral Arts Philadelphia is a premier chamber vocal ensemble of highlyexperienced pro-fessional and avocational musicians. Inspired by the works of J.S. Bach, the choir presents historically informed performances, explores new music, and engages the community in innovative ways.

Making music since 1982, Choral Arts Philadelphia (formerly Choral Arts Society of Philadelphia) actively participates in the region’s musical community by celebrating the talents of our local musicians. Under the tenure of its first artistic director, Sean Deibler, the chorus regularly partnered with the Philadelphia Orchestra in concert and onrecordings. Since then, Choral Arts has built a significant reputation and artistic presence in Philadelphia as a symphonic choir, and has maintained a particularly strong commitment to exploring areas of the choral repertoire outside of the central canon.

Deibler’s successor, Donald Nally, added greatly to the chorus’ local and national success-es that culminated in 2002, when the group received the Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence, presented by Chorus America, and The Philadelphia Magazine’s Best of Philly award.

Since 2007, under the artistic leadership of Matthew Glandorf, the ensemble has been transformed into a chamber-sized choir to achieve greater vocal flexibility to perform both the early and modern music repertoire. Since 2013, Choral Arts Philadelphia and its project, The Bach Festival of Philadelphia, have presented Bach At Seven, a popular, monthly midweek early evening concert series.

In its distinguished 35-year history, the choir has performed over 300 works by more than 100 composers. Most recently, the ensemble has premiered choral works by such acclaimed composers as Kile Smith, David Ludwig, Mark Rimple, Riho Maimets, Melissa Dunphy, Daniel Shapiro, Anthony Mosakowski, Andrew Lipke, and David Carpenter.
