Religious ToursReligious ToursCrete is full of beautiful monasteries, chapels and churches that house magnificent frescos and icons full of history, dating from 961.

The churches, places intended to meet the needs of Christian worship, are a characteristic element of the Greek landscape. Their decoration – whether paintings, mosaic or other always reflects the Orthodox doctrine.

Like the churches, monasteries are closely connected with the history and tradition of Greece. The monuments of the Greek Orthodox religion are an integral part of the National heritage.

The Byzantine and Post-Byzantine churches with their important iconography, mosaics, murals and rare icons, the cathedrals, the chapels and shrines of the countryside as well as the monasteries, all speak for the intense dedication to Greek traditions and the close interconnection of art with religious worship throughout the centuries.

Botanical & Walking ToursBotanical & Walking ToursCrete is a botanical paradise, the island boasts 2,000 species of plants – 160 of which do not exist anywhere else in the World.

Every year, botanists and gardeners flock to see one of Europe’s best floral displays and to seek out choice endemic plants.

After the winter rain, the wild, rocky landscape is flushed with green, fields and hillsides are bright with flowers, water flows in gorges and the air fills with birdsong.

Crete is also a very popular destination for walkers and it is easy to understand why with the breathtaking backdrop of sea and mountains, along with the mild climate, it is the perfect way to discover untouched Crete.

Ornithology ToursOrnithology ToursCrete is home to a number of rare and endangered birds such as the Lammergeier or Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), and Bonelli’s Eagle (Hieraaetus fasciatus).

Crete is 250 km long and is almost like a miniature continent with many mountain ranges, gorges, coastal fields, beaches, seasonal rivers and pools and even high mountain deserts. All these habitats mean that birding is very varied throughout the year.

The terrain varies all across the island and the Greek bird list currently stands at 422 species.  Many of these never occur in North or Western Europe or only as vagrants. Many of the birds here are as likely to have their origins in the Middle East or Africa rather than in Europe.

At migration time just about anything can turn up.  Spring migration does not end until early July and Autumn migration is well under way by mid August so there is something moving for most of the year.

Olive PickingOlive PickingOlive oil production held a prominent position in the Minoan society and economy as is shown by excavations and findings (earthenware jars, recordings on tablets & remains of oil mills). During the Minoan Period, olives were treated and oil was produced. The olive tree was worshipped as sacred and its oil, besides being offered to the Gods it was also used in the production of perfumes, medicine and in daily life as a basic product in diet, lighting and heating.Even today olive oil plays a dominating role, there is practically no Cretan dish, which is not served with olive oil. There are approximately 11,000,000 olive trees in Crete and the trees are harvested between the months of November to January. The cultivation technique today is not very different from the one used in ancient times, shaking the olive tree branches until the olives fell into nets, lying on the ground, the nets are then gathered and the olives taken to be cleaned or to be pressed. This is a community activity and everyone participates working at their own pace and experts will guide novices through the procedure, explaining the ancient and traditional methods used by Cretan countrymen.

Golfing HolidaysGolfing HolidaysThe Crete Golf club is a marvelous new addition to Europe’s rich reservoir of courses and it will soon be regarded as one of the finest tests in the whole of the southern Mediterranean.

The new Bob Hunt PGA masterpiece is best described as a desert golf course hewn out of rolling landscape little more than half an hour from the international airport of Heraklion.

It boasts a series of memorable holes that will test every aspect of a golfer’s repertoire and offers stunning views over mountainous landscape that has hardly changed since the Minoan era back in 2600 to 1100 BC.

The views on the back nine are incomparable and so is the service offered to visitors. Staff can supply a fine selection of quality hire clubs. They will go out of their way to fix up games for single golfers and can even arrange transportation as and when required. The standard of service at Crete Golf Club is exemplary and adds a great deal to what is already a special experience.
