Part XXV of "Cuneiform Texts from Babylonian Tablets, etc.," contains texts from ninety-three tablets and fragments from the I<ouyunjili Collections, the greater number of which arc here published for the first time.

The texts form a continuation of those published in Part XXIV, and represent portions of the great native explanatory worlc on the gocls of Babylonia and of compilations of a similar character. One of the tablets belongs to the Series lznown to the Assyrians under the title " A N : (ih) A-XU-UVZ," though the portion of the colophon which indicated its place in the Series has not been preservecl. Others probably represent parts of the Series that are missing from the Great God List and from the separate Tablets of the Series that have been recovered; but they afford no means for distinguishing them from works of a like character, copies of which the later Assyrian scribes incorporated in Ashur-bani-pal's Library.

Many of the lists are furnished with glosses by which the scribes have indicated the correct pronounciation of the names, or the exact meaning of the explanatory text, whet1 this was doubtful or capable of Illore than one interpretation. Many of the glosses are of col~sidrrable interest, as they afford information with regard to the values of Sumerian and Babylonian characters, or supply fresh evidence for values already known or conjectured. One group of tablets supplies a further instalment of lists in which separate titles are associated with different aspects or personalities of the same deity.

The descriptions of the texts and ~ h c copies are the work or Mr. L. W. King, M.A., F.S.A., Assistant in the Department.

DESCRIPTION OF PLATES.

PLATE.

I. EXPLANATORY LISTS OF GODS: TABLET OF THE SERIES "AN :(zlu) A-nu-um"

(K. 2597 + K. 2944 + K. 12832 + D.T. 355). That K. 2597, etc., represents a tablet

of the Series "AN : (ilu) A-nu-um " is proved by the remains of its colophon, in

which are preserved traces of the title though not of its number in the Series (seepl. 6, Col. IV, 1. 33). The fragment K. 4349f (see Part XXIV, pl. 49), is a

duplicate of the Obv., Col. I, 11. IO ff.; its text is closely packed, and two lines

are generally compressed to form a single line of the text as arranged uponK. 2597, etc. It gives no variants of interest, but, from 11. 8 ff., we may restore

the text of K. 2597, etc., Col. I, 11. 20 ff. The glosses which occur upon the

tablet usually give the pronunciation of the titles or of separate syllables in them;

exceptions occur in Obv., Col. II, 1. 34, pl. 2, and Rev., Col. III, 11. 4, 23, 28, pl. 4 f.,

where the explanations themselves are glossed. The long series of titlesidentified with the goddess Ninkarrak is of interest (see Col. II, 11. 37 ff., pl. 2 f.);it will be seen that among the titles ascribed to her is that of GA-GA, pronounced

Kaka, as noted in Tablet I of the Series, K. 4340 + 79-7-8, 294, Obv., Col. I,1. 3I (see Part XXIV, p. I12, pl. I). In other titles the rendering of NIN by e, in

place of its usual value ni or ninz, is noteworthy, as in Eniggudra, Etuniglalla-

shudu, etc. (Obv., Col. II, 11. 42 if., pl. 3; cf. also 11. 50 ff., 6I ff., and Col. III.,

1.3, pl. 4)... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... 1-6

II. EXPLANATORY LISTS OF GODS: TABLETS OF EXTRACTS FROM THE SERIES

"AN : (il/) A-zu-urn," etc. (K. 7663 + K. II035 and K. 7662; K. 13665 +K. 14176; K. 4349k + 81-7-27, 54). The tablet K. 7663, etc., is a duplicate of

the Tablet of Extracts, K. 4338b (Part XXIV, pl. I9), Obv., Col. I, 11. 2-9, andof Col. II; the fragment K. II035 (previously published in Part XXIV, pl. 9),

which has since been joined to K. 7663, is here partly republished to complete

the lines of the new fragment. With it may be classed the tablet K. 7662, which

contains several titles occurring in the first column of Tablet I of the Series; with

11. 4 fi. cf. K. 4340 + 79-7-8, 294, Obv., Col. I, 11. 6, 9, I3 f., I7, 2I, 23 (Part

XXIV, pl. I). The two fragments K. 13665 and K. 14176 are not tablets of

extracts from the Series "AN: (i/u) A-ni-Zun," and their inclusion on this plate

was dictated by questions of space. The former belongs to section VI, under

which it is described (see p. 8); the latter, hitherto regarded as a list of the

names of gods, is part of a list of sacred ships; its text is a duplicate of

K. 4338a + K. 4358a, Rev., Col. V, 11. 23-32, which forms Tablet IV of theseries of explanatory texts entitled " HAR-RA: u-bul-lumz." The tablet K. 4349+ 8I-7-27, 54 (pl. 8), is evidently part of a large tablet similar to the GreatGod List, and is probably inscribed with part of the text of the Series " AN:

(il/u) A-nn-umn." The obverse is chiefly concerned with synonyms of Ninib andGula, separated by a section devoted to Ereshkigal or Allatu, and her consortGugalanna and other deities of the Lower World; with Obv., 1. 8 f., cf. K. 2597 +K. 2944 + K. I2832 + D.T. 355, Rev., Col. III, 11. 24, 28 (pl. 4 f.) ... ... 7-8

The texts published in this section are very similar, both in contents and arrangement, to the tablets of the Scrics " A N : (ik) A-nzd-n~iz." In some passagcs the titles arc arranged in practically the same order as in the Series ; for instance, with the Great God List, K. 4349, Obv., Col. IV, 11. 116 ff. (Part XXIV, pl. 3 3 , compare I<. 215 + K. 2105, Rev., 11. 3 ff. (see below pl. 20), or with K. 4349, Rev., Col. XI, 11. 7; ff., So f., compare K. 2109 + I<. 8944 + K. 13689, Rev., Col. I, 11. 15 ff., 21 f. I t is very probable that some of the tablets and iragments are inscribed with parts of thc text of the Series that arc not represented in the numbered and labelled tablets of the Series that have been recovered. It may be noted that several tablets contain duplicate texts which restore or supplement each other; thus, with K. 4339, Obv., Col. 11, 11. 5-28 (pl. IO f.), cornparc thc duplicate, Bu. 89-4-26, "5, Obv., 11. 5-9, Rev., 11. 1-18 (pl. 15); with K. 215 + 2105, Obv., 11. 8 ff., Rev., 11. 186 if. (pl. 19 f.) compare the duplicate Km. TI, 32, Ohv., 11. i ff., Kev. 11. 1 ii. (pl. 21) ; and with Obv., 11. 16 iL, and Kev. 11. 186 &, coinpare the similar passages in Sm, 1447, Obv., 11. 2 ff., ((pl. 191, and D.T. I I j, Rev., 11. 5 TC. (pl. 20); with K. 266, Obv., Col. 11, 11. 34-44 (PI. 22) cotnpare the duplicate K. 6037 (pl. 23); or with I<. 8219, Col. 11, 11. I A .̂, compare the duplicate K. 7620, 11. 9 fK (pl. 24). The names arc usually arranged in the li.cts by grouping together the titles ascribcd to the same deity or in accordance with some association of ideas; an apparent exception in I<. 266, Obv., Col. 11, 11. 32 E, 3; ff. (pl. 22), and its duplicate K. 6037, 11. I ff, (131. 231, wherc, for a few lines togethcr, we rnect with what a t first sight appears to be a system of' classification by the initial characters of the namcs, is probably fortuitous. In one tablet (K. 4339, Kev., Col. IV, 11. I -~ Io , pl. 13) an astrological section is inscrtcd in the text, ten astrological titles being explained in two groups in relation to the planet Mercury and the god Ninib, the last-named being the Eagle of Zamama, the star whose symbol is of freclucrlt occurrence on the Doundary Stones. Another section, which forms a contrast to the usual arrange- ment of the text, occurs in tlic same tablet, Obv., Col. 11, 11. 1-10 (pl. 10); this passage is devoted to the various attributes of a goddess, cnuinerated as lines of a co~nposition running into metrical iorrn; in the duplicate, Hu. 89-4 zG, " 5 , Obv., Col. I1 (pl. is), it will be noted that the earlier part of the colurnn gives a variarlt text of the satnc general character. The transition hctwcen the two forms of explanatory texts, which occur in the Scrics " A N : (ilw) A- i lu->~n " and arc arranged in two and three parallel cnlumns respectively, is well illustrated in pl. 9 ff, Thus in pl. 11, 11. I 1 ff., we have various titles explained as equivalents of the god Ninib under cliiferent personalities or aspects o l his character. Similarly in 131. 9, 11. 12 fi., and in pl. 10, 11. 34 fL, different {unctions or aspects of the goddesses Aa and Sllala arc associated with divine rlan1c.j explained as their equivalents ; though different in form, these passages are essentially siirrilar to the eleventh column of the Great God List (Part XXIV, pl. 39 E). I t is interesting to note that thc first and most ilnpbrtarlt title of cach goddess (pl. 9,. 1. 12 f., and pl. 10, 1. 34, f.) is explained as the one she bore in her character as the bride of Shazu, or Marduk, suggesting the Babylonian origin of tllc compilation. As in the principal Series, surnlnaries are occasionally appendcd to sections referring to separate deities (cJ ep., pl. 9, 1. 11, pl. 10, 1. 33, pl. 31, 1. 22). A further resemblance may be seen in tile uotes attached to particular titlcs in the cxplanalory columtr to the effect that they were of forcigli origin ; thus we fitld various titles ascribed to Ninib or to Adad, the Weather-god, as thosc under which they were known and worshipped in Subartu, Elam, Syria, among the.

Kassites, etc. (see K. 4339, Obv., Col. II, 11. 35, 37, pl. [ I, Rev., Col. III, 11. I-5,pl. I2, K. 2I00, Obv., Col. I, 11. I6 if., 40, pl. I6 f.; cf. also K. 2I00, Rev., Col. II,11. II if., pl. I8, K. 7620, 1. 9, pl. 24, Rm. 6io, pl. 35, K. 29, pl. 36, K. 2108, pl. 37,etc.). In K. 4339, Rev., Col. IV, 11. 13 ff. (pl. I4), we have a series of divinetitles explained as local titles of Enzu, the Moon-god in Nippur, Borsippa, andother places; in the text the second sign of the title read as En-zu is written like

the sign for ur, er (al/u), and if that reading be adopted, the titles must be taken

*as the names or subsidiary titles of the different city-gods. An interestingsurvival from early Babylonian and Sumerian times may be seen in the classifi-

cation of the name of Bur-Sin, the early king of Ur, as that of a god in K. 215 +

K. 2105, Obv., 1. 17, pl. I9 (cf. also the duplicate Rm. II, 32, Obv., 1. IO, pl. 21, andthe similar text Sm. I447, Obv., 1. 3, pl. I9). This is clearly a result of the early

Babylonian custom of deifying kings after death, and even during their life-time,

which is met with as early as the dynasty of Akkad. It is not to be supposed

that the scribe who compiled the list and identified Bur-Sin with one of the

attendants or ministers of some greater god, probably the Moon-god of Ur,

regarded the king as the lesser god's incarnation upon earth. It is far moreprobable that the name Bur-Sin suggested that of no early king to his mind, and

had become a mere title of divinity compounded with the element Bur, like

Burrazu, or Burrakhea, in the same column. To the early inhabitant of Ur thedeified Bur-Sin retained his royal character and precedence: to the later scribe

he had become an unimportant member in a divine body of attendants on the

god of his native city. It may be added that many of the glosses occurring upon

tablets in this section are also of considerable interest, but they cannot here be

enumerated or discussed ... ... ..... ... ....... ... 9-34

aIV. EXPLANATORY LISTS OF GODS: TEXTS IN DOUBLE COLUMNS, SIMILAR TO THE

SERIES "AN: (i/u) A-nu-um," CONTAINING GROUPS OF NAMES COMPOUNDED

WITH "LUGAL" AS THE INITIAL CHARACTER (Rm. 6IO, K. 29, K. 2108, Sm. I 115,

K. I 11197, 82-5-22, 573, K. 11928, K. 7643, K. 2098, K. 2119). The first three

tablets in this section, which are perhaps the most interesting of the group, are

duplicates of one another. Thus in K. 29, Obv., Col. II, 11. 1-29 (pl. 35),correspond to Rm. 6io, Obv., 11. 1-30 (pl. 35); in K. 29, Rev., Col. I, 11. 7-30(pl. 36), correspond to Rm. 6io, Rev., 11. 1-24 (pl. 35); and in K. 2108, Obv.,11. I ff. (pl. 37), correspond to K. 29, Rev., Col. I, 11. 3 ff. (pl. 36), and 11. 6 ff.,correspond to Rm. 6io, Rev., 11. 3 ff. (pl. 35). The texts included in this sectionhave been grouped together for convenience, but it must not be supposed that

the arrangement is fundamental or exhaustive. It is true that their compilers

tended to group the "lugal "-titles together, but they did not isolate them, and

they mixed them with names of other formations. It may also be noted that

in other sections "lugal "-names, are scattered here and there (cf., e.g., K. 215 +K. 2IO5, Obv., 1. I f., pl. I9, Rev., 11. II if., 19 ff., pl. 20; D.T. I 15, Rev., 11. 5 ff.,

pl. 20; Bu. 89-4-26, 77, 1. 6, pl. 28, etc.) ... ... ... ... 35-39

V. EXPLANATORY LISTS OF GODS: TEXTS IN DOUBLE COLUMNS, SIMILAR TO THE

SERIES "AN: (i/u) A-nu-um," WITHOUT GLOSSES (K. 204, K. 7652, 82-3-23,

5217, K. 7651, K. 13682, K. 4559, K. 2II4, K. 1I3706, Bu. 91-5-9, I53, K. 13672,

K. 42IO, Sm. 849, Sm. I558, K. 7650, K. 7649, Bu. 91-5-9, I59, K. 8223, 79-7-8,

i64, Sm. I73, K. 2121, K. 1I3678, K. 7686, Sm. 78 + Sm. 1078, K. 1I2786, K. 7653,

80-7-I9, I31, K. 7658, K. I3703, K. 7722). The absence of glosses from the

texts in this section has furnished the principle on which they have been classified

for publication, but the distinction is not, in itself, of fundamental importance. In

fact, in the case of many of the fragments, it merely happens that the portion ofthe text preserved is without a gloss, though the tablet to which it belonged may

have been well supplied with them. A classification by subject matter would

havc yicldcd a dirrerent arraugcmcnt; for instance, the tablet I<. 4210 (pl. 43) may be comparcd witli the very similar text I<. 4209 (PI. 33), since each contains a section devoted to sylionyrns of E a (with I<. 4209, Obv., Col. 11, 1. 18 f:, cf: also I<. 4210, Col. 11, 1. 13 f.) ... ... ... . . . . . . . . . ... . . . 40-46

VI. EXPLANATORY LISTS OF' GOI)S, ASSIGNING SEPAIIA'L'b: 'TITLES TO DIFFERENT PERSONAl.I.Tlb:S OK ASPECTS OF THE S A M E DEITY (I<. 8222, Rm. 4'53, I<. 4366, K. 13665 ; CJ also K. I 1966). Of these tablets, two (I<. Szzz, pl. 47, and R. 13665, published 011 pl. 7, scc above, p. j) clearly rcfcr to Marduk, though his name is absent from the central column. The tablet I<. 8222 is of peculiar interest, since several of thc phrases in its explanatory column clearly refer to incidents in the Creation Epic. I t is unfortunate that thc lcft-hand column is wanting, sincc it tnigllt have furnished somc of tlie Fifty Titles of Marduk which are a t present wanting in the text of the Seventh Tablet or the Series Ezz~~~en elixh. Such phrases as ?xzl-tirfi-wil oh[!-Fzd], "the Avengcr of his iatliers " (1. 16, cf: also I. r7), mu-nap-$if lib-ldi-.Yu] (1. 18, cf: CI-cat. Ser., Tabl. TI, 1. Froru the sections and equatiolis quoted above it will have been seen that the Rabyloniail scribes ;~ttcmpted t o explain the large number of divinc narncs atid titles known to them by tlie supposition that many of thcln represented names for tlie sarnc gods. Thus they regarded certain lunar deities as merely aspects of Sin, the central Moon-god, or various rain and wcathcr-gods as manifestations of Adad, the great Weather-god hiniself. The process of thought is simple, and the steps by which thc result is obtained may be illustrated by the ioilowi~lg equatior~s, both of which occur within the limits of the Great God-List :-

(/.?dl) U-gdr = s21fi~Z ( i ( 2 1 ) fVeyr::~~l, " Ugur = Minister of Ncrgal." (ilu) U - ~ z l r = (ilzi) NergaZYn ha-n-iz-ti, " Ugur = Nergal, (as God) of the Sword."

Thus the rnilior war-deity Ugur, from his special cllaractcristics, is at iirst asociated with the circle o i deities surroiulding Nc'lr-gal, and accordingly in I<. 4349 F, I. 8, 131. 49, we find hinl described as the "lninistrr" (suhalh~) of Nergal. T h e next step is t o identify the minister with his lord, and accordingly, in I<. 4349, CuS. XI, 1. 67, 121. 41, we find Ugur csplaiiicd as the god Nergal liimsclf, ill liis special character, or nspcct, as Goil of the S\vorri (?a /In-n-n-ti). 111 this way groups of gods sharing the same characteristics, or pcrforrnit~g sirnilar or allied fuiictions, were identified, and in pl-ocess of titric each was regarded as a special m;u:ifestation of thc grcatcst god of the group arou~ld whom they iiad collected. '4 still further stcp ill an advance towards il~o~iothcisln is represented by the text i~iscribcd on tlie obverse of iYo, 47406, pl. 50, where we find various divinc names identified with Marrlul; undcr d i f i r c l ~ t characters or asljects, as follows :-

Grcat God-List a short section, dealing with M;irdul:, in which titlcs of the forrner class arc identified with him. The section, rvhich occurs on pl. 42, 11. 96 K, reads as folIo\\-s :-

Hmar-i~d is MarduL, (;rs God) of Frccclorn. Asaru-lu-sar is thr: same, (as God) of Slaughter (?). Asal-11-alim is thc same, (as Gocl) of Life. Enbilulu is the same, (as God) of Canals (?). Mumo is the same, (as God) of the I'itiless (?: Sicl;r~css. Shazu is tile satiie, (as God) of Mercy.

Here tlie name.; iclentificcl with Marduk are mercly titles such ;is arc ascribed to hirn upon tlie Seventh Tablet of tlic Creation Serics. Asaru-nli111 a ~ r d 51ia~l1 actiially OCCIII- ilpoti portions o l tlic text of t11;rt T;rhlet that have heen recovered ; Enbilulu, nlumu, and Asal-11-In-sar were proh;tbly among his fifty titles of hono~tr ; and Atnar-ucl is ~nci-clp a rc~~rier ing of his own ideogram. But in the Tahlet No. 47406 we hod not only F:lilil, the Kidcr X I , identified wit11 him, but also tllc great nature-gods such as tlic Mooli-god Sin, the Snt~-god Shnmash, tlic Weatlicr-god Adacl, a ~ ~ d tile W a r - ~ o d s Ninih anil Ncrgal. Tlie writer of tlie tahlet thus sccks t11 reduce still further tlie paiitheo~i of the gre;rt g11c1s by suggesting that each of them was merely a diliel-ent persotlalily of Marduk, the City-god of liabylon. The advance in sl)cc~~l;ttioli from the standpoint of the esplanatol-y lists in Aslrur-bani-pal's library to that of this text of tlie late Babylonian pcriorl, may bc illustrated by the follo~vi~ig equations t ~ i l ~ n l r ~ m tltcrn :-

According lo the earlier lists, Sur, a11 unintpostant rain-god, was ollly Adad, tile great Weather-god, in his character as the God of Rain ; the later text tnakes a further advance by identifying Aclacl himself with Marcluk, in ~vliose person it unitcs tlic powers of nature. Thc seconcl p;tir i ~ f equations quoted marl;s a i~rcciscly sitnilar advance. l'he same process was also applied to t l ~ c es!~lanation of foreign deities, as in the case of Tishpak, in the lists equated \\ritli Ninib (i$ 111. 41, 1. 64), but hcrc identified with nlarduli. Tlius i t \%-ill be sccn that the tes ts l~ubl is l~cd in the prcscnt part illustrate in a re~ i~arkable manner the process of thought hy rvhich the priests of the later liabyloni;111 l~eriod, in the cause or their own god Marduk, evolved a system of theology that was ciisti~rctly monotlicistic.

I n addition to such points of general interest, tlie Assyrian gorl-lists arc wortlty of study for thc irtforrrratio~~ tiicy givc upon subjects of a tnorc teclrnical natl~re. In m a n y classes of explanatory tests, and particularly in those dealing ~v i t h the csplanatioti and inlerpret~tion of divine names and titles, it was the custom o l the Hahylonia~i ;ind Assyrian scribes to add to their text glosses, u'riLtcn in a s~nallcr Iiand, wlricll sliciuld assist tlie reader in the prnnunciatio~~ o f t he names, or liclp him to understand the explanatiolis given. A gloss of constant occurrellce in Inany late nahylonian atid Assyrian tests, both of exl?l;ln;ltnry ;uid other kinds, is of a diffcrcnt character and lrray bc briefly rcfcrrcii to as eviclence of the respect with u~liich the native copyists trcatccl the original docunlents they reproduced. broken, the note consisting of the single \void Ji-hi, "broken " or effaced (cfi, r.g. I i . 4338 1;', Obv., 0 1 I 4 I . I ) . Ey this device the reader is prevented froill regardir~g as complete a text that is iii reality impcrkct. OF cii~lsiderably more interest and viilue are the explanatory gloxses, lor by givil~g the pronu~lciation oC tlie natues they frciluelitly iur~lish us with va1:1cs for the sigris of which we should ollicrwisc be utlilnarc. I n view of the l~ulyphonous character of tnarly rjf the c ~ ~ t i e i f o r ~ n sig~is the majority of the glosses added by the scrihes refer, as might well be imagined, to the correct pronunciation of the iiatncs. :\i a typical example wc may refer 10 the glosses in K. 4340 + 79-7-8, 294, Ohv., Col. 11, I . 38 f,, pl. 5, wlicrc the pronunciation of the divine name -+ -IJ, is glossed as Eirlil and as Zllil; the first of these glosscs givcs the reading of the characters as Eiilil, the origitial form of the name, a ~ l d the gloss in tlie ne s t liric tlic secondary form of the uame, altered slightly in pronunciation. Sornetiines glosscs assign values t o characters which they have acquired it1 special titlcs due to their identification with certain deities. Thus in I<. 2097, Rev., 11. 7 and 9, pl. 18, the glosses give the reading ~:&YLI for t l ~ c signs ZJ and En, when used as a divine title ; in fact the scribe liere indicates -~~ - that each of the titles -+ ,&J and t*T- T-51 is to be read as the name of the goddess Ishlihara, ~ v l l o ~ n 11c idc~itifics with Islitar in the csplallatol-y column. T h e sarrtc passage illustrates atlotlicr ancl a more uncommon use of glosscs, ~vhic l~ , in addition to giving a sign's value or prononciatioti, occasio~tally add its name (cJ I<. 2097, Rev., I. 8 f., pl. IS). We may also note that Tram tllc gloss i - l i~ ~rzi-lj; added to the name - - [dqfFI ill Ikv. , I. a, it would appear that the dcterrniliative ilu, ~vhich occurs before cvcry name explained in the lists o r gor!s was somctimcs, though rarely, pronouilced.

Since the majority of the explanations of tlie divine titles given by the lists arc writtcn ideographically, or in Surncrian, it will be obvious illat the cxplanatiot~s thc~iiselves wrjuld require c lucidat io~~ when the rendering of the Surncriati signs or the ideogt-ami was arnhigiious or obscul.e. 'Thus the readittg of the sign K I N in IS. 1.333, Rev., Col. IV, 1. 40, pl. I T , is glosscd as a-Jot, " sistcr" of I;:nlil, to indicate it is not to bc read as biiit, "lady." Occasiolially, when the explanations consist of dcscriptions of the gods wrillen ill Sumerian, glosscs are adilcd t o each line givit~g its translation in Semitic ; cj! t11c glosscs 7iiit-lik ( i h ) rl-izi, "connsellor of Anu," applied to Gsug(or Sag)-gal-la, vzlrll-ii- 6tL ( i h ) 21-i~i, " director of tlic Temple o l ;\nn," applied t o Sliarlii, etc. (I<. 4340 -i- 79-7-8, 294, Obv., Col. I, 11. 37 ff). Such glosses are so~~letirncs incorporated ill the t e s t as aclclitio~lal lincs; !/. T<. 4337, Obv., Col. 11, 11. 4 anci 6, 131. 13, where rirni*-iuiiz i-lit-& (iizr) 13e-lit-i-li and mut-tiz-iuf-:ii-ii~i-ot nr.-ifit-a-ti wcrc ol~vioucly added to llic t e s t originally it] the ful-m of glosses, but alierivards became part of it. The process of incurp0r;ition is \'Jell iilllstrated by the passage I<. 4332, Obv., CoI. I, 1. 35, pl. 13, alld its duplicate K. 134.9, Obv., Col. 11, 1. 93, pl. a;. 'i'l?e tent here cxplains Ama-du-klrl as one of the titles of H&lit-ili : in thc first O F the two passages cited tlie gloss in the left coltirnn givcs the l~ronunciation of the last two syllables of the name, and that in the right c o l u m ~ ~ ::ives its meaning; in the duplicate the pronunciatio~i is not indicated, a ~ i d the l l l c a ~ i i ~ ~ g is no lo11j:cr given as a glcss but as part of the tes t , under the form u7nmu pi-tla-/rt p t z ~ k i , "tlie rnotl~cr \vho openeth the bolt." As examples of glosses giving eq~~iva len ls or loi~gcr explanations in Semitic, we tnay cite IS. 2097, Rev., 1. 3, ])I, IS, I(. did<) U , I. !, f., 1'1. 31, : ~ n d I<. 4349, Oh"., c:ol. IV, 1. 68, pi. 31. Such glosses are often o l use in throwing light upoil the c11ar;icter of a god or up011 tlic cxplanations given in thc texts. n u t it is from lhe glosscs referring to tlie pronur~ciation of the names that the nlost valuable informatioil is derived, a!; these solnetillles add to our k ~ ~ o ~ v l c c l ~ c of the Surncriati and Babylonia syllabaries.

From a study of the glosses furnished hy the texts whicli are lxiblished in this Part i t is possible t o oblairi a tiumber of new values for certain of the cuneiform signs. Thus the proilunciation of -+-- .a$$::, the tillc of the Weather-god Adad, expressed by the ch:~racter 4q doubled (cq? I<. 4349, Rev., Col. XI, I . 42, 171. 40), in I<. 4349, Ohv., Col. In certain cases, llo\\,ever, the employment of variant characters by the scribes may not be duc to identity of value, but to a confusion of tlie early fortiis of the charactei-s, with which the later Assyrian and Babylonian scribes were colnparatively unfamiliar. I t is possible to see ail instance of socli confusion in the it~terchangc of zVY and in such variant forins as -4- 7; (I<. 4349,

In thu passage on I<. 4332 the pronunciation of tlic title - -+ rf :v*.c{ is glossed as :rrrr -, ar.11 ((5 also tlie reading of the title -+ 7: !&I& 7: as E7-ilnj, and assuming that the scribes have not confused tlie characters, we m i ~ y provisiollally assign to a 1 the value 1.21. From glosses to ch;ll-;~cters occurring in the lists which are here published we also obtain authority for assigning vall~es to them very similar to others with which they are already identified. Thus in I<. 2097, Obv., Col. I, 1. 12, pi. IS, the gloss to tlir title -+ -[=l+T],'reading un-ki-en, gives authority for assigning to this sign the value u~~hen, whence its derivation unhewizil (;I iynotiyni of ~ I ~ / L T I I ) ; froil~ r~izhe~z was derived the value ukhin, cf: the change in pronunciatiot~ of E:'nlil to ILLi/, In I<. 4338 6, Obv., Col. 11, 1. 4, 131. 19, tliere arc traces of an intcilsificd form o i the sign E:$<za ((3 I(. I 1035, I. 5, pl. g), which, like it, according to the gloss, has the value nhrii!; \vc may also note that, thougli tlic sign in tthc same line is 'written rather large, it should possibly bc taken as part of the gloss, in lvhicli case it would givc us tllc value 74i-Bn for the i g i i '2'. I\ comparisoo of I<. 4349, Obv., Col. I I , 1. 84, pl. z j , with I<. 4332, O h . , Col. I, 1. 19, 131. 12, proves tliat tlic gloss .;inin refers to the sign :ST! ,-~,,, and affords arrotlicr definite authority for this v;~lue. 111 I<. 2097, Obv., Col. I, 1. 17, pl. 18, -*ry the gloss to the name -*k - 3 7 $r [E:lr] gives a ilea, authority for assignillg to ,W-Pl the valiie i ~ t ; atid in 11. 18 f. of the sarric colulnli of the tablet the glosses fur~iish two additional instances in which CET is proved to have the value ni, worn dolvn fi-om its original value 722'71. 7lic glosses in I<. 4349, Obv, Col. I t is just possible that glosses were sometimes cinployed to indicate the pronunciatiol? rvitlluut giving the actual values of the characters to which they are attached. Thus n cast

could he tuade out for explaining in this way the occurrence of tlic gloss 7ni after the sign L +~-.:xj in tlie name -+- fiET ZY-Er -4, tlic title borne by tlie goddess IEIit-ili, in her cllaractcr or aspect as the "1.ady of the Waters," be-/it ma-iz-mi, var. ?~~e-n-n~u-tizi (cJ I<. 4332, Otrv., Col. I, 1. 18, pl. 12, and I<. 4319, Obv., Col. 11, 1. 83, pl. 25). I3y rendering the title as '( tlie Lady of the Crown." cve could assign to ~~-~~ its linown valuc as tllc equivalent of nfh, arid regard tlie gloss as rnerely an indicatioti of the pro1111ncia:ion of the sign, thc close of tlie syllable being omitted in thc gloss silicc ?zi~ follon~s in tlie r11aiti title. I t may he noted tliat even so we should obtain the ncw variant t i~iz for tile charilcter. I t is preferable, hilwcvcr, to regard rili as the actual reading of tlie sign, wliicll Iras resulted by proccss of ~vc~ir ing down from its original value 712en or iliiu. This accords uritli a well-I<~loli~ii pccirliiirity in the d c v c l o ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ t ~ i t of the Sumeriari syllabary, which may be illustrated by soc11 csiimples as CITY, \vhose value .?iz is worrl down from an original 5%; and <r-*a with the valrie $a, worri dow11 fro111 an original

$ 2 , We thus obtain for t l ~ c sign :,>-.:IT tlic nclv value 711i. tl simili~r i1ista11cc is furnished by the name (ilz~) N i ~ - k i - a - ~ - a , cvllerc the last character but one is glossed as .?a. Ilcre, too, it might be argued that, since the syllable ?*a follows, the gloss is merely a guide to tlie readilig of the sign, which it shows sliould bc read as .Y(zl, not hi by giviilg the beginning of the former syllabic. But it is prcfcrablc in this case ;~lso to assign to 4 the vnluc f i r , rcsulling from the wearing down of its origin;il value .?,ri,, A similar case of wearing down is prcsciited by +, whose value 6n1 has been wo1.n down to 6n (,$ the gloss in I<. 4332, IZev., Col. 111, I. 33, pi. 16). In K. 4349 M + IC. 4345, U, Col. I I , l . 6, pl. 50, the gloss rli-421 gives the pronunciation of the first tmo characters in the tillc --I- (I* +h- :;Try, n~liich is to he read as Di-&u-uni. In this case there can be no qucstion or the gloss bu serving m e ~ e l y as an indication that *r, is to be prot~ounccd as &zlcL, sirlce the rollo\ving syllable is open and does not begin rvitli r f . I t thus gives us for the new value 421, cvfiich has heen derived, by a process of wearing cIow11, i ron its original value bud.

The principal expla~ratory tests which ;Ire published in this Part are the nurrlhcrcti tablcts of the Series "AX : ( i h ) A-IIZL-~I?~~? and the Great God-List, ~vhosc text, vvlicn complete, probahly included the whole of that important Series. All thcse 127crc found at ICouyunjik, and from the colophons which several or them bear it is clear tlrat thcy were either made for the library of Ashur-bani-pal nr incorporated in it. Thus the First Tablet of the Series, of which t l ~ e greatcr part of the text is preserved by I<. 4340 + 79-7-8, 294 and I<. 4333, bears Asliur-ba~~i-pal's own colophon, proving that it was specially copied for his library; anrl the sariie is the case with 80-7-19, 297, labelled the Ninth Tablet of the Series, the sinall size of which niay perhaps be explained by its being the last of the Series (see plates I I and IS). Others of the tablets bear colopho~~s, from which we gather that, though they were not necessarily made for Ashur-bani- pal's library, they werc afterwards addcd to it. Thus 1i. 4332, the Seco~~cl Tablet of thc Series, was copied from an oldcr tablet in nabylon ; the two lines stating that it was deposited in ilshur-bani-pal's palace arc a later addition scratched in the surface of the clay at some period after the tablet Ilad been balied (see p1. 17). A similar talllet is I<. 2097, the Third 'l'ablet of the Series, whose original colophon also states that it was copied firom an older original, probably in some other city than i'iinevch (see pl. IS) ; a~irl the same remark applies to I<. 7 730 (pi. 4), which is a fragrncnt of one of the tablets of the Series.

Since the tahlets on which the colophons arc scratchccl upon the clay resemble in their general style and character those irrlprcssed with f\shur-bani-pal's own colophol~, we rnay perhaps conclude that they werc made in Habylonian cities by Ashur-bani-pal's own scribes, who did not add his coloplloil until they were certain they would be rccluircd for the 1.ibrar.y. Tllc Grcat God-I.ist is an exception to this rule, for it does not bear Asl~ur-bani-pal's name a t all, but orily t h ; ~ t of the scribe who wrote tile tablct. The coloplio~~ (see plate 4.6) is in two parts. 'l'he first part (11. 1-7) is a copy of tllc c<~lophon upon tlie origin;il tahlel, ~vhich, when cotnplctc, gave the total ~ i u ~ n b c r (if divine names esplained or classifiecl, and tile source from which they were talcen, etc. The second part (11. " In accordance wit11 tlie text of the original Great-Tablet, Iiidin-Sin, the scribe, tlie son of Sut&, the royal scribe, hat11 wrilten (this copy) ;rnd liath rcviscd it."

From the use of the word (1"1$~ynI:i<, " Great-Tablet," to describe the Great God-I.ist, it is clear that to tlie i\ssyrian scribe.; themselves its size anrl the length of its tcxt were unusual. In fact, it inay well have been incluilcrl ill tllc royal li11r;lry ;is so~ncthinz of a coriosity, or as alr cxainplc of scribal sliill in compressing a whole series of tests on to the surface of a single tablct. That tlie Great God-List when complete included the tcxt of the Series " A N : (i/u)A-nu-un~" is clear, not only from the fact t1i;rt tlie c;rrly part of its t es t is cluplicatc of the first tlircc r11111lbcred tablets of the Series, but also from the occurrence of its title in the second line of the colophon,~vhich follows the statement of the total number of names explained. That the reader may see at a glance the portiolis of the Grc;rt God-T.ist which are covered by tablcts of ihe Series " A N : (ih~)il-izz~-uii~," the followi~~g table 1x1s been compiled. A colnparisotl of the passages eiiumerated i n the above list nrill show that summaries and division-lines occur in llic Grcat God-List wliicli arc absent frc~rn the sep;rr;ltc Tablets of the Scrics. Thns the summat-y i n Col. 1, 1. 129 (pl. 23), does not occur it1 I<. 4333, Ohv., Col. I1 (pl. 6 ) , and tlie " 190 names" here referred lo clo not rcprcscllt tllc total rlurnber explained in Tablet 1 of thc Scrics, but only the rli~irlbcr of those in the preceding portion of its tcxt. On the ollier hand the summary ill Col. I t , 1. 73, though not represented in the Series, is inserted a t the end of its First Tablet ; here the total number of names explained in the preceding portion of the text is given as orie llliridrecl and forly-eight, and by adding these to the nulr~bcr given i11 the preceding surnmary xvc tnay infer that thrcc hundred and thirty-eight names of gods wcrc dealt with in the First Tablet of the Series. I t will also be obvioiis that tlie scribe of the Great Gad-List did not slavishly follow tlie division o i his text as classified upon tlic Tablets of the Series, but it~lrocluced other main divisions in tlic for111 of summaries, where tlie nature of the siibject sccrncd to clernand thc~n. I t rnay be noted that the small H written in the centre of the double coluri~i~ above the su~n~nar ies signifies x(rl/zrid, "complete," indicating that tlie preceding portion of the text, from the occurrence of the last summary, rcprescnts a co~nplcte and riot an abstracted section of tlie work.

In spitc of the size of the ( h a t God-I.ist it was only by writing minutely that the scribe was able to find room for the whole composition, and even so 11c was obliged to cornpress the arrangement of the tes t as much as possiblc. Thus the forty-tnro n;imes of Rklit-ili are not set out with a line to each as it1 T~lblet I t of the Series (pl. 12 f.) but are compressed two to a line (111. 2j), and the list of the predecessors of A I ~ I and A~l tu , with whom they were in a sense idcnliliecl, are treated in a similarway in the second paragraph of tllc tcxt. Such ;r con~pression of tllc text %vould necessarily render it rnorc difficult for the reader to follow, and, in order ro lessen the chance or confi~sio~i between diFfcrent sections dealing with separate groups of ancl titles, the scribe of the Great Gocl-List has separale~l them by lines ruled Eicross the double colu~nn which are absent in the Tablets or tlic Scrics. The groups, for instance, in Col. I, 11. I 3, and that ending nrith 1. zo (pl. zo), arc not marked in this way it? li. ~1:j~l.o + 79-74) 294, Obv., Col. I (pl. In some cases where the Grcat God-I.ist inserts a division-line, the separation of the .:ections is sufficiently indicated in the separate tablet by a new series of numeration (cf: I<. 4349, Col. 11, 1. 97, and Col. 111, 11. 16 and 23, ~ l a t e s 25 and 27, and K. 4332, Col. I, 1. 42, and Col. TI, 11. j3 and 64, plates 13 and 15) ; but the scribe is not consistent in this respect, for in the fiist of these passages, though a new numeration begins with 1. 46, no division is indicated in the Great God-List after 1. gglr ( r f : also I<. 433% CoI. I, 1. 5 5 , and I<. 4349, Co1. 11, 1. 104). On tile otllcr hand certaill divisions of the t e s t are marked oot by lines ruled across the colum~l in the Series as well as the List (c/: c.g:, I<. 4340, etc., Col. 1, pl. 'That the great Series of tablets known as " A N : (il1~).4'-?l11-trnz " sliould have existcd in inore than one revisio~i is a natural inference from the important position it occupicd in the later explanatory literature of the Kabylonians and Assyrians. Ancl direct evidence that this was the case is afforded by a cornparison of tlie GI-eat God-List with the separatc tahlets of the Scries. In duplicate copies of Sumerian and Assyrian tcxts alilce, slight variants in writing, in tcrlninations, and tlie like invariably creep i n ; cf: the interchange or sucli syllables ;rs li and hr after syllables ending in 1, of 7ire and inn after syllables ending in 02,

or of 1.i and m after a syllable ending in r, ctc. So, too, the ornission or insertion of such completing syllables, or of thc genitive suffix, to a Iargc txtcllt depend on the taste or training of individual scribes. I t is in the arrangement and variation of tlie text itself that we may see evidence of the processes of editing to which thc text from tinle to time h a been subjected. Thus names are solnetimes insetled iii the Grcat God-List which do not occur in the tablets of thc Series wliich have been recovered ; cf: I<. 4349, Col. A cornparison of the duplic;~tes also throws light on tlrc diffcre~it ways a divine nanic or title coul<l be written. Thus tlre goddess Ninslrar's name coulcl be written as (/:hi)iViiz-&B (I<. 4349, Col. I , 1. 19, pl. zo), or ( i h ) fVlir-E++, the 1:lst sign b c i ~ ~ g glossed CIS ?u-a?, (I<. 4340, ctc., Col. Variants sometimes indicate tlie true reading uT a name or title ; tlius the spllahie SrT, a t the end of the riamc of the first tnirlister of the River-god ill I<. 4349, Col. 1 I I, 1. 81 1 ~ 1 28, is wrilte~i as mi-il in I<. 4332, Rev., Col. 111, 1. 29, platc 16 (Nc;.i..rhunr71iii), though ilic earlier part of tlie name appears to be given under a dicerent form in tlie Grcat God-List ; cf. also the title (ihi)E-ta-:s (I<. 4 3 4 . ~ Col. 11, 1. 69, 131. 24), where the vari;int reads [(ilu)] E-to-la-irk (K. 4340, etc., Rcv., C:ol. Some viiriants arc possibly due to the substitution of glosses for the original sign, as in the substitution of 5'/ ibr in thc titlc Kin-uru-nrunclti, on the assumption that tlle latter is the origiiial form of the lame (($ I<. 4333, Obv., Col. 11, 1. 10, pl. 5, and K. 4349, Col. Otlier v:iriai-its arise fiool tllc use of signs or espressioiis of tlic sanrc or sirnilar mca~i i i~g , such as the use of the title -+ h i11

the substitution of :yTyT (el for (1~7,~) in the title Nilz-u??l(var. e)-fag-gn (6 I<. 4333, Rev., Co1. 111, 1. 17, 121. 7, and li. 4349, Col. I, 1. 145, pl. 23. Other variants me may t,n)bahly trace to sc!.ih;il error ; thus the reading of :'Fit; for :s (cf: 1<. 4349, CoI. I, 1. 140, 111. 23, and I<. 4333, Rev., Cd . I l l , 1. g, pl. 7) may have arisen from the sign in the original tablet having been rubbed or broken ; for i V a ? ? ~ ( t ~ ~ ~ ) . z i - n ' a , a title of Ea (T<. 4332, Obv., Col. 11, 1. 47, pl. 14), the cl~lplicate (K. 4349, Co1. 111, 1. 13, pl. 27) gives the dirCerent titlc Zi(-TT*)-zi-nSr, elsewhcrc idcritiried with Kinib, wliich may possibly be due to the omission of a siilgle wedge ; again, in 1C. 4349, Co1. 111, I. 746, 131. 28, we find ST$-ha!-ku correspoilding to Suil.-k?$-lu in K. 4332, Rev., Col. 111, 1. 20, 111. 16, as thc name of one of the four hounds of Mardul;, where the latter is probably the more correct, though Su-iz~-/z!~ (cf: s ~ ~ h k z ~ i l . ~ ~ , "dcafn-not a vcry suitable naillc for a dog) is also pos.siblc.
