NRMA Motorfest The weather for our day was a little overcast early morning but by

mid morning the clouds cleared and the blue sky and very warm weather had the crowds gathering around our Baby Austins. The Club was very well represented, showing six cars in total. Attending in their Austin 7’s were; Fiona and Craig Davies (who also showed his lovely Mini Cooper), Deirdre and Brian Haywood, Ann and Eric Bourne, Trevor Hails, Anthony, Kevin and Helen Harte. Also there to support the Austins were Sue and George McGill, Barbara and Don Scanes, Robin and John Ikin and Gary Cottle. The party atmosphere started from when the cars arrived at the

Domain car park and continued on into the streets where all the fantastic cars, vintage bikes and trucks were displayed.Lots of new and old friends were found and talked of old times, as

always happens when a gathering of vintage people get together.Maybe next year a few more Members might like to come along and

enjoy our beautiful city.As usual the NRMA staff had a very big job to get all the cars in

place in a short time with approximately 1250 plus this year.

President’s ReportI would like to thank all of those who ventured out on Australia Day

to one of the three venues advertised in the events section of our magazine last month. I never cease to be amazed at the amount of interest our little babies generate at public displays, what a great advertisement for our Club. I would also like to extend a special thank you to our friends from The Milton Ulladulla Vintage and Classic Car Club for their hospitality over the long weekend and look forward to returning the favour in the near future. The biggest news for this month is the launch of our new look

website. Darryl has been working on this for some time and it is quite an improvement on our original site. Please take a look later in the month. Our next run is another breakfast run to the north. As usual I would

like to encourage as many as possible to come along. It’s a perfect opportunity for those on conditional registration to take a drive and after all, the true purpose of conditional registration is to allow enthusiasts to attend Club runs. Those who don’t, risk losing Club endorsement for future registration. It’s also a perfect opportunity to get your pride and joy into next year’s calendar.

Happy Motoring,Mark Wellington

Please note: Any Member using a vehicle that is on Conditional Registration (HCRS) and is attending a Secondary Club Run, or any event listed under Invitations Accepted or Other Events of Interest, MUST contact a Committee Member to advise your vehicle movements prior to attending the event. The committee of the nominated primary club on your conditional registration must be aware, and approve of, all movements of your vehicle. If you wish to attend invitational events outside Club runs, you must contact a committee Member to log the trip, otherwise your registration and insurance is not valid. At all times your Austin 7 should carry a copy of the Club’s Certificate of Insurance (Public Liability) and the most recent copy of “Baby Torque”.

Event Director’s Report

Our first Club event for 2010 was the breakfast run to Scarborough Hotel. A special thank you to Robyne and Ross Bell who invited our group to their home for a BBQ and arranged a visit to a “shed” full of vintage vehicles, (actually 2 sheds) and the Milton Ulladulla Vintage and Classics Car Club for their friendship and hospitality. On Australia Day we attended Mollymook Beach for celebrations where we were joined by Club Members Jennifer McIntosh and James Murray and Jenny and Brian Bloser and family. history and hands-on run with still plenty of time to relax and enjoy the countryside. We are about to see two new vehicles joining us on our Austin 7

travelling adventures. The next Club run is to Brooklyn, let us get a great roll-up and show the people of Brooklyn our beautiful little cars. Those interested in having breakfast at the marina please contact the Events Director so you can be assured of a table.

A big welcome for little Herbert!

I’ve been looking around to buy an Austin Seven, and found one that seemed just right. But unfortunately, thecar was located in New Zealand. It was just what I wanted, but surely the cost to get it to Australia wasprohibitive.

After some quick calculations I realised the currencyexchange rate made the car a better deal than Ioriginally thought. I figured this saving could help mebring the little Seven to Australia. So I purchased thecar.

I phoned my employers customs agent and asked himto transfer the little car from its regional New Zealandaddress to my home. And to make it easier for me, Iwanted just one invoice for the entire job.

This was not a problem for the agent. But before anywork could begin I had to apply to the federal Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Developmentand Local Government for an Approval to Import a Vehicle. I completed the application using Regulation 17 ofthe Motor Vehicle Standards Regulations 1989 to import a vehicle manufactured before 1 January 1989, andthen posted it to Canberra together with the required $50 fee. Then I waited … and waited … and waited.Seventeen days later I received my approval in the post and the job could now start.

I emailed the approval to my agent. An insurance company representative then inspected the Austin andsurveyed its condition. It was then collected from its former home and taken by road to Auckland where it wasstored awaiting containerisation for shipment. It was then loaded onto a ship and sent to Australia. Upon arrivalin Sydney it was removed from its container and inspected by Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS).And finally my new little baby was delivered to my home.

This exercise was relatively simple for me as the agent looked after everything other than my initial applicationto import.

But naturally, everyone concerned with this transfer had to be paid. The customs agent, the insurancecompany, the road freight company, the storage people, the people who prepared and loaded the container, theshipping company, the people who unloaded the container, the people who transferred the car to AQIS, AQISthemselves and the road freight company who delivered my car to me. Then the tax people added 10% GST onall the CIF (cost, insurance and freight) values. I also had to produce evidence of the cars purchase price for thecalculation of Australian GST. However, if you have owned and used the car in a foreign country for 12 monthsprior to its import into Australia then you can use the Personal Imports Scheme without incurring GST.

So finally, was the cost what I expected and was it worth the effort? Well, not everyone would require apremium door-to-door service, e.g. including insurance and transporting the car a long way to Auckland forshipment, so this transfer did cost me more than it may cost others. This import exercise cost me about $5,300without the GST on the purchase price.

However, even with these import costs, I feel this little Austin represents fair value.

By the way, he’s light navy blue and black, very cute, and I’ve christened him Herbert. So now all that’s left is forme to enjoy driving my new (old) 1932 Austin Seven Box Saloon.

GENERAL BUSINESS

1. Constitution – we haven’t had a committee meeting. 2. Question regards to what is a family membership.3. Question re clarification of name of Club.4. Kevin Harte submitted notes for review at the committee meeting.5. Supper roster for 2010 was determined.6. Asked members if there was anything that they wish the committee to consider. ie Mid week run for example.7. Two more Austins on the road this month Paul and Amy Pui’s car should be on the road before the end of the month and Robert and Faye next week hopefully.8. Robert imported from NZ – needs to be unregistered, pay 10% GST on costs insurance and freight. You also need to pay 10% of the value. Needs to go through quarantine – if they need to fumigate you need to pay for that. Has been a convenient but expensive process. Expect to pay $4500 to get here over and above the cost of the car. A car still attracts 10% GST. From NZ the dollar worked in your favour but still expensive. 9. Discussion re plates having to be cancelled before leaving NZ.10. DVD of mud trials in the 60’s was shown.

Meeting closed at 8:55 pm.
