Course in Depth

What will I study?

You will develop your subject knowledge and study arange of teaching skills, such as classroom management,while developing your interest and academic ability inEnglish. You will discover how to apply what you havelearnt about English in the classroom while developing anunderstanding of the trainee teacher's role by exploringdifferent perspectives and your own experiences of therelationship between education, the curriculum, teachingand learning and the development of children and youngadolescents.

How will I study?

Learning takes place in both the University and inpartnership schools.

You will spend a significant amount of time on placementin schools being trained by expert mentors where you putyour training into practice. During this time you will assistin supporting classes, working alongside mentors andother colleagues to further your professionaldevelopment. You will gradually develop your teachingabilities from observer to teacher. Your tutors will modeloutstanding practice to enable you to develop your ownteaching skill and style.

Your teaching timetable will increase as your trainingprogresses and as you become more confident in theclassroom. You will work with pupils from various areas,backgrounds and abilities. This will provide experience inareas such as classroom management and the ability toteach individuals and groups at a range of levels.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed in a number of ways including workbased on your classroom experience where you willdemonstrate how to plan effectively, undertake

assessment and to develop your subject knowledge. Youwill also carry out assessments and assignments such asverbal presentations, posters, essays and practicalnotebooks. As you progress from observer to teacher inschool, you will be assessed through lesson observationreports. Your professional development will be mappedagainst the Teachers' Standards (2012) for the award ofQTS.

There are no formal written examinations as part of thecurrent assessment methods on this programme.

SUG1000: Professional Practice 1A (20 credits)Professional Practice 1A provides an initial professional practice experience in a secondary school with an additionalshort placement in a primary setting. Initial professional practice is based upon observation and practical experience.You will have frequent opportunities to observe experienced teachers in the classroom, in addition to shadowing pupilsand staff. The school’s safeguarding processes will also be explained. The placement will enable you to carry out avariety of school-based tasks, participate in lessons under your mentor's supervision, and gradually increase yourresponsibility for both planning and teaching.

SUG1001: Personal and Professional Conduct - Transition into Higher Education and the TeachingProfession (20 credits)Personal and Professional Conduct - Transition into Higher Education and the Teaching Profession equips you withthe required academic study skills for Higher Education and the necessary professional vocational skills for yourteaching experience. The module will also raise your wider professional awareness of the importance of secondaryteaching. The aim is to encourage you to make purposeful links between theoretical understanding, theimplementation of national policies and initiatives, and your practice-based experiences. Self-evaluation, reflectionand the setting of professional development targets are key features of the module.

SUG1003: Principles, Pedagogy and Planning in English (20 credits)Principles, Pedagogy and Planning in English introduces English subject-specific professional responsibilities for KeyStage 3 and Key Stage 4, covering lesson preparation, delivery, evaluation and pupil assessment. The module enablesyou to develop the required professional vocational skills and knowledge for your teaching experience, workingtowards effective classroom delivery for all pupils. This will include an introduction to how to plan and deliver effectiveand well-structured lessons which promote a love of learning and encourage children’s intellectual curiosity. You willdiscover how to plan for the effective use of homework and other out-of-class activities to consolidate and extendpupil knowledge.

SUG1014: Literary Theory: Analysis, Criticism and Evaluation of Literary Art (20 credits)Literary Theory: Analysis, Criticism and Evaluation of Literary Art familiarises you with a key aspect of Englishstudies. The module examines a range of different theoretical approaches to literature, including Marxist, feminist (andgender), postcolonial, structuralist, post-structuralist, new historicist, cultural materialist, psychoanalytic, andnarratological. You will engage in researching the key thinkers associated with each strand of theory, as well as readingextracts of key texts written by these leading names.

SUG1015: Culture, Values and Tradition: Critiquing the Western Canon (20 credits)Culture, Values and Tradition: Critiquing the Western Canon introduces you to some of the most famous poems,plays and novels in Western culture. You will engage with a large number of texts that have been widely andconsistently regarded as outstanding cultural achievements. The texts will date from the beginnings of Westerncivilisation right up to the middle of the 20th century. A selection that were originally written in English between the16th and 20th centuries will be studied in greater detail. Crucially, on this module, you will parallel your studies of theclassic authors and texts with readings about the complexities and debates surrounding the very notions of Westerncivilisation, culture and the Canon.

SUG1016: The World Today: Studies in Contemporary Literature in English (20 credits)The World Today: Studies in Contemporary Literature in English immerses you in the work of authors of poetry, plays,and novels, published between the mid-20th century and today. You will be encouraged to reflect upon the stylistic andthematic evolution of literary art over the course of the past 50 years and begin to develop robust hypothesesconcerning the relationship between an author’s literary art and the political, economic, social and cultural contexts inwhich the author lives and writes.

SUG1049: Introduction to English Language Studies (20 credits)Introduction to English Language Studies is centred on the study of the English language and its many varieties andstyles. The module will provide you with a solid foundation in the basics of grammar, introducing you to the differentways in which English language is studied at university level. You will also engage in the study of how language ismanipulated for effect by writers and speakers across many different genres.

Year 2

SUG2000: Professional Practice 1B (20 credits)Professional Practice 1B allows you to prepare for, and subsequently complete, a placement in which you willundertake up to 50% of a full teaching timetable, comprising observation, small group or whole class teaching withyour mentor or another trainee, and solo teaching as appropriate. You will have responsibility for planning lessons orparts of lessons, maintaining sound discipline, ensuring appropriate teaching methods are used, assessing learners'progress, and making written evaluations of your own teaching. You will also be expected to take a full role in the widerlife of the school, participating in tutor work, pastoral care, extra-curricular activities, professional developmentopportunities, parents' evenings and school events.

SUG2001: Personal and Professional Conduct - Legal Requirements for Professional Practice (20credits)Personal and Professional Conduct - Legal Requirements for Professional Practice helps you to understand therequired professional conduct, duties and responsibilities of a secondary teacher. The aim is to encourage you to makepurposeful links between theoretical understanding, the implementation of national policies and initiatives, and yourpractice-based experiences. Self-evaluation, reflection and the setting of professional development targets are keyfeatures of the module.

SUG2003: Creative Medium Term Planning and Teaching in English (20 credits)Creative Medium Term Planning and Teaching in English enables you to consider effective teaching in English throughthe discussion and evaluation of alternative approaches. In addition, the module will analyse the role of English in thecurriculum and examine how it contributes to a range of whole-school issues. There will be a clear focus on theplanning, teaching and assessment cycle, which lies at the heart of the most effective professional practice, and onevaluation and review, which lies at the heart of ongoing professional development.

SUG2010: Educational Research Methods for School Improvement (20 credits)Educational Research Methods for School Improvement provides you with an introduction to qualitative andquantitative educational research methods for personal and school improvement. The reading and assessment ofpublications, combined with reflection on methodological issues, forms a key element of the module. You willformulate a research plan which provides an excellent foundation if you wish to pursue higher degree study or furtherresearch work in the future. The module will demonstrate the need to keep up to date with both research anddevelopment in knowledge and pedagogy in your chosen subject area and encourage you to critically evaluate yourown learning.

SUG2014: Shakespeare Studies: Plays and Sonnets, Now and Then (20 credits)Shakespeare Studies: Plays and Sonnets, Now and Then focuses on a selection of Shakespeare’s works in order toexplore the historical and cultural conditions underlying this highly significant epoch in British cultural development.The module will engage you in the study of selected plays and sonnets, concentrating on pertinent aspects of each, forexample on the history play as a manifestation of national and cultural identity, as well as analysing the relationshipbetween politics and theatrical representation in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.

SUG2015: The Age of Revolution: Romanticism, Its Contexts and Its Legacies (20 credits)The Age of Revolution: Romanticism, Its Contexts and Its Legacies is one of the key artistic movements in the historyof literary art, with the key authors and works associated with this period being amongst the most widely-known of all.The illustrious names include Wordsworth, Blake, Byron, Shelley and Keats. This module will engage you in thein-depth study of the historical background from which this artistic movement emerged and enable you to investigatewhy it is that the Romantics sought to break from the Enlightenment authors who preceded them, as well ashypothesising as to why Romantic literature eventually evolved into that which is characterised as distinctly Victorianin style and content.

SUG2049: Further Studies in the English Language (20 credits)Further Studies in the English Language engages you in the exploration of both the seminal texts and theorists in thefield of English language, as well as introducing you to the most up-to-date advances and areas of study and research inthe discipline. You will develop language skills in key areas such as the history of the language, sociolinguistics andpsycholinguistics.

Year 3

SUG3000: Professional Practice 2 (40 credits)Professional Practice 2 consists of a synoptic placement during which you will be required to undertake up to 70-75%of a teaching timetable, comprising observation, small group or whole class teaching with your mentor or anothertrainee, and solo teaching as appropriate. You will have responsibility for planning lessons or parts of lessons,considering the role of a scheme of work and developing it for a specific group of learners, maintaining sounddiscipline, ensuring appropriate teaching methods are used, assessing learners' progress, and making writtenevaluations of your own teaching. You will also be expected to take a full role in the wider life of the school,participating in tutor work, pastoral care, extra-curricular activities, professional development opportunities, parents'evenings and school events.

SUG3001: Personal and Professional Conduct - Employability (20 credits)Personal and Professional Conduct - Employability equips you with the advanced academic study skills required forHigher Education and the necessary professional vocational skills for your professional practice. In addition, themodule enables you to further your working knowledge of the standards for teachers' conduct, enhance youremployability, prepare for job applications and interviews, and understand what to expect from your year as a NewlyQualified Teacher. Self-evaluation, reflection and the setting of professional development targets are key features ofthe module.

SUG3003: Classroom Assessment and Target Setting Skills in English (20 credits)Classroom Assessment and Target Setting Skills in English develops your understanding of assessment theory inrelation to both formative and summative assessment practice in school. You will need to grade work againstschool-based and national benchmarks relevant to English studies, as well as developing strategies for givingmeaningful feedback and targets to pupils in order to secure progression. The module also outlines the cycle ofevaluation and review, examining its impact on future planning.

SUG3010: School Improvement Study in English (20 credits)School Improvement Study in English enhances your skills in qualitative and quantitative educational researchmethods for personal and school improvement. The reading and assessment of publications, together with reflectionon the design, implementation and critical evaluation of methodological issues, form key elements of the module. Youwill implement and evaluate a research plan during a professional placement and gain a strong foundation forpotentially pursuing higher degree study or further research work in the future.

SUG3019: Novels, Plays and Hollywood: Turning Text into Film (20 credits)Novels, Plays and Hollywood: Turning Text into Film engages you in a critical analysis of the ways in which literarytexts have been turned into films. You will be introduced to, and then guided in, an independent exploration of a broadrange of literary and film theories. You will then study a select number of examples of filmic literary adaptations insome depth, practicing applying theory to text in order to develop more critical and reflective analyses of thesecultural products.

SUG3020: Modernism: Literary Art in a Time of War (20 credits)Modernism: Literary Art in a Time of War engages you in the in-depth study of one of the key periods in the history ofliterary art. The Modernist period in literature can loosely be defined as running from the very early years of the 20thcentury up to either the end of the Second World War or even to the last years of the 1950s. You will study a selectgroup of primary texts from this period and then engage in analysing them against the backdrop of your studies ingeneral literary theory and, in particular, academic publications from the Modernist literary movement. Ultimately, theaim of this module is to foster an awareness and understanding of what it is the Modernists were reacting against andhow their artistic project fundamentally shaped the art that followed in the second half of the 20th century.

SUG3021: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (20 credits)Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages examines the history of language teaching and learning, individuallearner differences, grammatical terminology, materials development, and planning English for Speakers of OtherLanguages lessons. The module is delivered by a combination of tutor-led presentations and trainee-centred, practicalseminars.

360 academic credits are studied on the programme in total, in addition to 80 ungraded credits for the ProfessionalPractice modules.

Timetables

Timetables for your first week are normally available at the end of August prior to enrolment in September. You canexpect to receive your timetable for the rest of the academic year during your first week. Please note that while wemake every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place onany day of the week. Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities.

Tuition Fees

If you are a prospective UK or EU student who will bejoining this undergraduate degree in academic year2020/21, the tuition fee will be £9,250 per annum.Tuition fees for international students enrolling on theprogramme in academic year 2020/21 are £12,250 perannum.

The University may administer a small inflationary rise intuition fees, in line with Government policy, insubsequent academic years as you progress through thecourse.

Financial Support

Subject to eligibility, UK and EU students joining thisundergraduate degree can apply for a Tuition Fee Loanfrom the Government to cover the full cost of tuition fees.UK and EU students enrolling on the programme mayalso be eligible to apply for additional funding to helpwith living costs.
