Course in Depth

What will I study?

During Year 1 you will develop your counselling skillsthrough practice with peers, observation of practice andsupervised feedback sessions. Self-awareness andemotional insight are key aspects of the programme andyou will engage in facilitated personal developmentsessions. You will also be introduced to the theories ofpsychotherapeutic change to inform your practice, as wellas preparing for client work by studying the ethics ofcounselling practice. Essential study skills are taught toenhance your academic experience.

Year 2 engages you in supervised practice with actualclients while introducing different methods of researchand immersing you in the theories of psychotherapy. Theissues which clients present in therapy will be explored toenhance your practice and adaptability to meet clientneeds. You will also increase your own understanding ofself in relation to others via a weekly personaldevelopment group.

You will continue with supervised client work in Year 3while receiving feedback and guidance from academicstaff. A critical appraisal of psychotherapy is completedand you will enhance your therapeutic use of self throughprocess groups and student-led seminars. Theprogramme concludes with a self-directed study moduleand a dissertation, allowing you to concentrate on an areaof vocational interest or concern agreed with your tutor.

How will I study?

This programme is delivered utilising a variety of teachingand learning approaches, including lecturer-ledworkshops, counselling skills practice sessions, groupdiscussions, process groups, tutorials and student-ledseminars. An experiential learning approach is adopted inorder to support self-reflective practice.

You will be required to undertake counselling placementsin years 2 and 3, completing a minimum of 15 hours ofclient work in Year 2 and a minimum of 100 hours ofclient work in Year 3. This will entail providing one-to-onetherapy with actual clients and will be a supervisedpractice, ensuring you gain the necessary professional

experience to become a competent practitioner.

How will I be assessed?

A variety of assessment techniques are used includingpresentations, vivas, seminars and written assignments.Formative assessment is incorporated to supportachievement and confidence with the opportunity forconstructive feedback prior to any summativesubmission.

There are no formal written examinations as part of thecurrent assessment methods on this programme.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by a highly qualified team with vastexperience in the field of counselling and researchmethods. The degree is led by a programme leader andeach module has an individual module coordinator. Youwill also be assigned a personal tutor to support yourlearning experience. You will have access to excellentlibrary facilities and learning services support. Guestspeakers with specialised knowledge will also enhanceyour learning experience.

Year 1

FDH1100: Essential Study Skills for Undergraduates (20 credits)Essential Study Skills for Undergraduates enables you to identify your own individual learning styles. The moduleprovides the opportunity for you to develop your IT skills, essay writing, note-taking and presentation skills in order toenhance your learning experience. Facilitation of information retrieval and introduction to the University’s virtuallearning environment is also encompassed within this module.

FDH1158: Professional Ethical Practice (20 credits)Professional Ethical Practice explores the professional, legal and ethical frameworks that underpin practice withinhealth and social care. Issues related to professionalism, such as confidentiality, boundaries and legal responsibilitieswill be explored. In addition, you will explore the principles, process and value of supervision within the counsellingrelationship.

HUG1186: Introductory Counselling Skills (20 credits)Introductory Counselling Skills gives you a firm grounding in basic counselling skills and active listening. This isachieved through providing introductory counselling skills training within a theoretical framework of experientialperson-centred counselling and psychotherapy, underpinned by an introduction to the core competencies ofhumanistic psychotherapy. The module will explore the characteristics and attitudinal qualities of an effectivetherapeutic relationship.

HUG1187: Experiential Processes (20 credits)Experiential Processes provides you with the opportunity to develop an increasing awareness of self and other withinan experiential process group. The focus of the module is to introduce you to the role of accessing and expressingemotion and experiencing within therapy.

HUG1188: Experiential Person-Centred Theory (20 credits)Experiential Person-Centred Theory focuses on key aspects of experiential person-centred theory and explores thefunction of process and emotion in this particular therapeutic model. The module will consider the underpinningphilosophies of this mode of therapy in order to ground learning. To give breadth to your theoretical awareness, thecore model will be considered alongside a 'common factors' approach to evidence-based psychotherapy relationships.You will be encouraged to engage with contemporary psychotherapy research so as to inform your future clinicalpractice.

HUG1189: Developing Counselling Skills (20 credits)Developing Counselling Skills guides you towards an appropriate level of competence for your clinical practice withreal clients. This will be achieved by training you in a 'process-sensitive' approach to therapy, where experientialdifferentiation and emotional specificity are core aspects of practice. The module is underpinned by an experientialintroduction to process work in therapy, covering emotion theory and its evidence-based relevance within therapy.You will explore the characteristics of a therapeutic relationship which seeks to promote client self-agency, specificallythrough the therapeutic tasks that enable the client to access their own emotions and experiencing.

FDH2209: Personal Development (20 credits)Personal Development focuses upon the developing independent reflective practitioner, enabling you to identify andwork with differences between the clinical practice of your peers to enhance the client experience and relationship.This module will focus on your ability to be congruent and immediate within a personal development group. You willconsolidate your learning, enhance your ability to develop an experiential person-centred way of being relevant to thecore model of practice, and contribute to a greater understanding and appreciation of self on the counsellingrelationship.

HUG2213: Understanding Research (30 credits)Understanding Research introduces you to research to develop an understanding of the research process. The modulewill familiarise you with the nature and variety of research methods together with the need for an evidence base toguide the decision making process. You will evaluate qualitative and quantitative methods, examining both the positiveand negative aspects of both approaches, in order to determine that each approach can be seen as equally valuable andoften complementary.

HUG2301: Client Issues in Counselling and Psychotherapy (20 credits)Client Issues in Counselling and Psychotherapy considers the range of presenting issues which bring clients totherapy. The module will promote a phenomenological approach to understanding clients’ presenting issues andemotional processes. The aim is to support your ability to engage with a wide range of clients by exploring the natureof common presenting issues. This will be done in the context of experiential person-centred therapy which is apotential-oriented model in which the phenomenology of the client takes precedence over any diagnostic model. Themedical model for understanding emotional distress is culturally predominant. This module aims to engage criticallywith the medical model in a manner which stimulates debate and reflexive discussion.

HUG2302: Supervised Practice (30 credits)Supervised Practice promotes effective and ethical practice in your clinical placement. The module is, therefore,designed to be a blend of casework supervision and therapy training. The mode of delivery will be predominantlyfocused within small group work, which is supplemented by whole group input on therapeutic processes, skills training,ethical issues, process work and placement issues. You will be encouraged to share examples of best practice andprocess problematic clinical experiences.

HUG2303: Advanced Experiential Person-Centred Theory (20 credits)Advanced Experiential Person-Centred Theory develops your knowledge of experiential person-centred therapy byfocusing on key theoretical constructs and underpinning philosophies of process-oriented psychotherapy. The moduleis underpinned by the aim of turning contemporary research evidence into therapy processes and consequentlyencourages you to utilise findings to inform practice. As such, the module is intended to support the development ofyour clinical practice, the integration of 'lived theory', and the promotion of a reflexive attitude towards the profession.

Year 3

HEA3065: Negotiated Learning Shell (20 credits)Negotiated Learning Shell offers an opportunity for you to study a topic or work related issue at degree level. Itinvolves you identifying the chosen area for study, developing and negotiating a learning contract (which will outlinethe what, how, when, where and why of the study period), as well as the means of assessment to showcase theacquired learning.

HUG3245: Advanced Supervised Practice (30 credits)Advanced Supervised Practice incorporates a clinical placement designed to help you progress to a creative masteryphase of therapeutic practice. The module is designed to be a blend of casework supervision and advanced therapytraining. You will be supervised in creatively adapting treatment principles and tasks to new situations in response toclient need. The mode of delivery will be predominantly focused within small group work, which is supplemented bywhole group input on therapeutic processes, skills training, ethical issues, process work and placement issues. You willbe encouraged to share examples of best practice and process problematic clinical experiences.

HUG3246: Integrated Personal Development (20 credits)Integrated Personal Development provides the opportunity for you to develop an increasing awareness of self andothers within an experiential process group. The focus of the module is to facilitate you in the process of accessing andexpressing emotion and experiencing within therapy. You will be expected to work with your own emotion schemesand configurations of self. The module aims to integrate students within a 'therapist's developmental agenda'fundamental to experiential person-centred therapy.

HUG3247: Contemporary Issues in Counselling and Psychotherapy (20 credits)Contemporary Issues in Counselling and Psychotherapy considers the wider social context in which therapy takesplace and engages you in the critical discussion of contemporary philosophical and social issues influencingcontemporary therapeutic practice. The module advocates a panoramic consideration of cultural factors whichinfluence emotional and psychological health and wellbeing. The aim is to critically evaluate your role in society as atherapist and facilitate the development of critical thinking skills as an essential aspect of reflexive practice. A socialconstructionist approach is taken to understand the impact of culture, language and social relations. This will provideyou with the reflective space in which to identify the assumptions and prejudices which may inadvertently restrictyour ability to communicate openly with clients in your practice.

You will select one of the following modules:

HUG3100: Dissertation (30 credits)Dissertation focuses on the identification of an area of vocational interest or concern to be identified by yourself andagreed with your supervisor. You will engage in a structured review of the literature related to the specific area ofstudy, apply critical analysis to the literature and make recommendations that could improve service provision.

HUG3240: Primary Research Dissertation (30 credits)Primary Research Dissertation focuses on the identification of an area of vocational interest or concern to beidentified by yourself and agreed with your supervisor. You will engage in a structured review of existing literature anddesign and carry out a research project related to your specific area of study. You will apply critical analysis to theestablished literature as well as the findings from your proposed research and make recommendations that couldimprove service provision.

Optional modules provide an element of choice within the programme curriculum. The availability of optional modulesmay vary from year to year and will be subject to minimum student numbers being achieved. This means that theavailability of specific optional modules cannot be guaranteed. Optional module selection may also be affected bytimetabling requirements.

Timetables for your first week are normally available at the end of August prior to enrolment in September. You canexpect to receive your timetable for the rest of the academic year during your first week. Please note that while we

make every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place onany day of the week. Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities.

• Academic Year 2018/19 Entry: Typical offer112 UCAS Tariff points, for which no specificsubjects are required, plus at least five GCSEs atGrade C or Grade 4 or above (or equivalent)including English Language and Mathematics;

• Academic Year 2019/20 Entry: Typical offer112 UCAS Tariff points. No specific subjects arerequired.

An interview forms part of the selection process.

On successful completion of this degree you will beprofessionally qualified as a counsellor andpsychotherapist. The programme supports employmentwithin a variety of settings, including the NHS, private

Finance

Tuition Fees

If you are a prospective UK or EU student who will bejoining this undergraduate degree in academic year2018/19, the tuition fee will be £9,250 perannum. Tuition fees for international students enrollingon the programme in academic year 2018/19 are£11,800 per annum.
