    Dato Baharuddins illustrious career inarchitecture spans more than 40 years.During this period he has exemplied truecommitment, integrity and dedication to theproession.

    This is evident in the creativ ity and theoutstanding quality o his works, anduntil today his works is still admired by allsections o society as well as tourists rom allover the world.

    Dato Baharuddin studied architecture at theUniversity o Manchester, obtaining a Diplomain Architecture and Town Planning in 1958.

Dato Baharuddinthen joined JKR as an Assistant Architect in1959, where he served until 1966. Duringthis period our country was still searching ora new architectural identity, to symbolize anindependent Malaysia, ater more than 400years o being colonised by the West. This

    presented the perect opportunity orDato Baharuddin and team to implementtheir version o the Modern Malaysianarchitecture, resulting in one o their mostamous and original work, the NationalMosque.

    For his outstanding contribution to thecountry during his career with JKR, DatoBaharuddin was conerred the Ahli MangkuNegara by the Government o Malaysia in1965. Dato Baharuddin is a RIBA membersince 1960 and became a PAM CorporateMember in 1967.

These buildingswere the icons o a progressive Malaysia andhave infuenced the direction o the Malaysianarchitecture. These skyscrapers also serveas the testimony to the capabilities o ourlocal architects to carry out mega projectsand technologically complex buildings,the epitome o the Malaysia Boleh spirit.Amongst these modern skyscrapers thathas coloured the Malaysian architecturallandscape over the years, and mark the

    emergence o the Malaysian skyscrapersare the Pernas Building, Bank Pertanian,MAS Building, UBN/Shangri La Hotel andthe Komtar Complex. The above mentionedbuildings were important achievements omodern architecture in our country, andcontinue to be admired today or theirenduring elegance.

    Dato Baharuddin and Jurubena Bertigasorte is in the design o modern mosques inthe spirit o the National Mosque. Thereoreit was not surprising that Jurubena Bertigawas commissioned to design many moremodern mosques throughout our country.

    Among the mosques are the SandakanMosque, Kota Kinabalu Mosque, Pulau IndahMosque, Section 16 Petaling Jaya Mosqueand the Labuan Mosque. All these mosqueswere unique in their own ways as DatoBaharuddin was experimenting with the

    fuidity o reinorced concrete orms and latersteel and metal in his mosque designs, overthe commonly used masonry and concrete.The innovative spirit in Dato Baharuddin andhis commitment to excellence in architectureare exemplary and should be emulated by allpracticing architects.

    PAM Awards or Architecture had been saidto be the Academy Awards or Architecture.I that is so, the PAM Gold Medal Awardcould be described as the Nobel Prize orArchitecture in Malaysia.

    PAM Gold Medal Award is the highesthonour that the Institute can bestow to anArchitect. The objective o the Award is toacknowledge and give due recognition toArchitects who have:

    1. directly contributed towards architecturein Malaysia or internationally throughconsistent and good design;

    2. Produced works which have contributedto the advancement o Architecture;

    3. Endowed the proession with thedistinguished service or theadvancement o the proession and

    architecture in Malaysia;4. Made a signiicant contribution to society

    through the architectural proession.

    There has been a misunderstanding thatthe PAM Gold Medal Award is given to amember who had contributed a great dealat PAM. That is not the case. It is importantthat we clear the air on this, so that therebe no misunderstanding on this in uture.

    To date, PAM has only given out 4 GoldMedal Awards. The past recipients were in1988 to the late Dato Ar Kington Loo; in1992 to the late Dato Ar Hisham AlBakri;in 1997 Datuk Seri Ar Lim Chong Keat andin 2001 to Ar Hijjas Kasturi. Looking back,it does appear that PAM had been ratherstingy in giving out the Gold Medal Award.Over the course o more than 50 years onation building, I am sure there are a ewmore architects deserving this honour suchas Ar Jimmy Lim, Dato Ar Dr Ken Yeang,other past nominees, the late Ar Chin VoonFee etc. It is hope that PAM members anduture PAM Councils would catch up givingdue recognition to our heroes in the nextew years.

    Council had to decide on the venue tohold such a grand event. Ater muchdeliberation, upon Ar Boon Che Wee theDeputy Presidents suggestion to adoptthe RIBAs tradition o celebrating theGold Medal Award in one o the recipients

    PAm Gld mdal Award 2008 PAm Prid p

    buildings, we gave Dato Baharuddin achoice on where to hold this party. Itsgreat that Dato had chosen this venueor the award ceremony - or the MasjidNegara is certainly one o the masterpieceso architecture in Malaysia.

    Allow me now to quote Ar Hijjas Kasturi, apast recipient o PAM Gold Medal Awardin 2001, and one o the assessors ortonights award. His view is representativeo the views o the panel o Assessors.

    Dato Baharuddins pioneering spiritand legacy continue to colour Malaysianarchitectural landscape to this day.His contribution to Malaysia is nothingshort o spectacular: or example theNational Mosque, KOMTAR, Shangri LaKL, Museum Selangor and Shah Alam,to name but a ew o his masterpieces.He deines modernity through simple yet

    bold orms interpreted within the contexto Malaysian culture and landscape. Likemany o his contemporaries, he struggledto set new Malaysian architectural idiomsand directions post-Merdeka. Like allpioneers, his pursuit was laced withinsurmountable challenges all or the sakeo Malaysian architecture and the uturegenerations. Malaysian architectural historycannot be written today without makingdistinct reerences to his works through hispractice - Jurubena Bertiga/Architect Team3, which he helmed with Datuk Seri Ar LimChong Keat and Ar LimChin See.

    The three di rected theirm with simple action-oriented approachthat has resulted in 3decades o acclaimeddesign achievementand maintenanceo the highestproessionalstandards.He believedin the

    principles o modern, practical,contemporary and progressive design butwith the understanding and respect or trueheritage and traditional values.

    As a pioneer o modernist architecture,Dato Baharuddin has endowed Malaysia

    with a body o signiicant works thatare exemplary o his belie, the people,climate and time. Yet they are timeless.His commitment to the practice andteaching o architecture as well as to theInstitute o Architects is an inspiration tomany generations o architects. DatoBaharuddins lie-long achievements andcontributions not only in architecture butalso to the local authorities and otherorganizations made Dato Ar Dr HajiBaharuddin bin Abu Kassim a worthyrecipient o PAMs highest honour, that isthe PAM Gold Medal Award.
