Welcome to Issue 4.

We have recently held a B4 event at Williams F1 in Oxfordshire which was attended by over 240 members

of the growing B4 community, which now includes over 600 businesses in the Thames Valley.

The event encapsulated everything that B4 is becoming – a fantastic platform for businesses in the Thames

Valley to meet, face to face, and do business. We had businesses of all sizes, from sole traders to national

organisations, from a wide range of sectors, but, most importantly, we had businesses from different

counties making connections.

In the past few months, I have had more people talk to me about the positive outcomes from being a B4

member than ever before. I am hearing about plenty of instances where members have chosen other B4

members because of that simple fact. They feel a B4 membership gives a certain level of endorsement,

or they have met the other member in question at an event which has given them confidence to do

business with them. That’s how B4 can work for you, it can help put your business in the spotlight in the

magazine, on line and face to face and that’s half the battle. The rest is down to you.

As the year draws to an end we look back on our launches in Berkshire and Buckinghamshire in 2012

knowing that there is so much more to do in both areas before we can begin to reflect the success B4 has

enjoyed in Oxfordshire over nearly seven years. It is coming, and the more we can get businesses working

with each other across the network, confidence will continue to grow that B4 can secure your company

results. Why not give me a call personally and I will be delighted to explain how your business can benefit

from B4 membership.

In this issue of B4 Buckinghamshire, we welcome Richard Smith, General Manager of The Oakley Court

Hotel. We enjoyed a wonderful event at this fabulous property in Windsor earlier this year and look forward

to May 9th when The Oakley Court will host one of our four B4 Ambassadors Events – details regarding

registration will be announced soon.

If you would like to attend a B4 event in Berkshire, why not join us at Newbury Racecourse on January

16th? More details can be found at www.b4-business.com in the B4 Events section.

Enjoy B4 and all the best for 2013.

newsWith tighter financial constraints and ever-smarter buyers, your customers are likely to besearching the market more keenly than ever forproducts and services that offer best value. Ofcourse, best value doesn’t necessarily meanlowest price and many factors will contribute towhere a prospect places their business.

This subject of value versus price was discussed ata recent Institute of Directors breakfast meeting at

L’ortolan restaurant. Feedback from groupdiscussions was that for most business to businesstransactions, price alone is not the key factor. Valueis really a measure of the benefits we can provideagainst the price to be paid by the customer. However, it’s important to remember that this pricemay not only be financial; it can be other things apurchaser may have to give up, such as spendingtime learning to use new software; the cost ofdisruption during installation of a new product; or

changing to new processes.

In conclusion, it’s not just price but the mismatchbetween value and price that leads to financialunder-performance or, even worse, lost sales.

B4 LEAD

THE QUEEN, BANANAS, GOLDMEDALS AND ROCKY HORRORGeneral Manager of The Oakley Court Hotel, Richard Smith, spoke with B4’s Richard Rosser about his career, his personal thoughts on this fabulous hotel and conference centre in Windsor and his plans to help thoseentering the hospitality industry emulate his career path from waiter to general manager.

So, where did it all begin?

“I began by working as a waiter when I leftschool and then joined Whitbread, starting inBristol where I was born and bred. I then movedto The Breadsall Priory Hotel and Country Clubin Derby at a time when the Marriott’s werebeing franchised and embarked upon a periodof moving from one Marriott to another includingGlasgow, Milton Keynes Courtyard by Marriottand then, finally, The Bristol City Centre Marriott, the largest outside of London. During this periodRichard achieved the highest recognition withinthe international Marriott organisation byachieving the Marriott Chairman’s Award forguest service, UK Hotel of the Year and theInternational Hotel of the Year of all MarriottHotels around the world!

“I then had the opportunity to work in the USAand worked there for several years for a Marriottowner in the Chicago area with my family, which was an amazing opportunity. We had awonderful time as a family and the whole workexperience and self development was incredible.

“When the visa, unfortunately, expired, I cameback to work at the Cotswold Water Park FourPillars Hotel – I was the second GM taking overfrom the opening GM. Through The Four PillarsChief Executive, who knew Principal Hayley’sChief Executive, Tony Troy, I then went to workfor Principal Hayley and have been with thegroup for four years.

“It’s been my life and it’s been my career. I metmy wife in the hospitality business; my son isalso now in it, so it all continues and it is a wayof life, it’s not a job, I live and breathe it.”

So how does this incredibly likeable GM sum uphis current establishment, The Oakley CourtHotel?

“The hotel was built in 1859. It was originally ahome, converted to a hotel thirty years ago. BrayStudios, the base for the famous HammerHorror Films, was located next door, and manyfamous films were filmed here such as theDracula films, Frankenstein, Rocky Horror PictureShow, St Trinians, Half a sixpence, The Avengers.

“I do believe because of our unique location on

a great stretch of the River Thames, (we actuallyown ¼ mile of the river edge) that we havesomething really special here. We have thirtyseven acres and our very own nine hole golfcourse!

“We have 118 bedrooms here and our mainfocus is conference and meetings duringthe week, turning into a leisure hotel at theweekends where we are a fantastic location forweddings, a romantic setting beside the river. Wehad a cracking 2012 with the Olympics. We werethe base camp for Team GB Rowing and TeamGB Canoeing. We also had Sir Steve Redgrave,John Inverdale and the rest of the BBC rowingand canoeing commentary teams.

“The hotel saw thirty medals come back fromthe Games and the first GB gold medal of anysport came back here with Katherine Graingerand Anna Watkins winning gold in the women'sdouble sculls. We were delighted to play oursmall role in the Team GB achievements – allthe Athletes were very pleased with the venueas it was their home for several weeks. We fedthem, looked after them, and fed them again! They actually had two breakfasts plus a largelunch and dinner, consuming in excess of 4,500bananas! They were big people – the boys andthe girls! It was so exciting to be at the centre ofthe rowing & Canoeing success and we couldhear the incredible roar of the crowd from EtonDorney, I am really proud of the part we playedto contribute to this experience and to theGames as a whole.”

So what’s so special about The Oakley Courtfor you?

“In my opinion it’s a beautiful, old, quirky buildingwith unique character. The floorboards creak, there are some unusual nooks and crannies andthat adds to its overall appeal. It’s not purposebuilt and that is the joy of the building. It isunique – it has so much heritage. We have therich heritage of the past, the heritage of now andno doubt the hotel will enjoy a rich heritage inthe future. The Queen has visited the hotel inrecent times, with the “Swan Upping” takingplace here, she arrived by boat from her Windsorhome! – we held a “Garden Party” for ourspecial guest, we also invited some local schoolsto be part of this occasion and present to her

majesty some of their work about Swans. Wenow celebrate this special event by holding our“Annual Garden Party” on the same day.

“The hotel continues to re-invent itself for thehere and now. We have installed free wi-fi, flatpanel TV’s and have more investment plannedfor the future with more investment in IT andmore contemporary bedrooms.

“We enjoy good repeat business and we do verywell with Heathrow being so close by and weare a stone’s throw from the M4. We have a lotof blue chip companies coming here year afteryear. They keep coming back because of theservice we provide and the great location – theylove the quirkiness of the hotel”.

“Our performance has been incredible in the lastthree to four years. We have strategicallychanged our business model to protect andenhance our performance. Our trading hasactually increased in the downturn and this hasbeen through a lot of planning and nurturing ofexisting clients”.

“We are also developing our people and havedeveloped ‘YOU’RE ON THE UP!’ – a schemewhich helps our new joiners in 2013 with a ninemodule course which gives those that want tobe in the hospitality industry a firm foundationin the business. Having started as a waitermyself, I know you can go through the rankswithout any off site training. There will be plentyof potential students out there who can’t affordcollege/university and we are showing that thereis another way to succeed in this business.”

If Richard can launch the career of just one moreRichard Smith it will have been a job very welldone.

Make sure you get along to Oakley Court, forbusiness or pleasure, although it’s hard to seehow even business cannot be anything otherthan a pleasure at this incredible hotel.

THE OAKLEY COURTIt was late August and we were making our way down the M4 to Windsor. Ironic really that recent guests at ourdestination, the fabulous Oakley Court Hotel in Windsor, included our victorious Olympic GB rowers. They’d havefared much better in the monsoon conditions which accompanied us throughout our fifty minute trip from Oxford. But as we entered the hotel’s drive and parked outside reception, the clouds cleared and the sun shone on OakleyCourt. Maybe the rowers had left some Olympic gold dust

The Oakley Court, part of the Principal HayleyGroup of hotels, sits amid thirty seven acres ofimmaculately chiselled gardens and lovinglymanicured lawns. There is even a private stretchof the River Thames running past the hotel, sono wonder it is a sought after venue forweddings, celebrations, conferences or shortbreaks.

A short drive to the heart of Windsor, The OakleyCourt is the perfect venue for two, a corporategroup or, as we discovered, a family of four. Wearrived in time to relax in our room – two adjoiningrooms creating a huge space. Ours, well after a fightit was ours, was slightly larger with a huge walk indressing area. The kids had an Oakley Court teddybear on the pillow – a welcome touch, even forfifteen year old boys (yes I know you’ve got it Ed!).

We had time to freshen up and even enjoy a glassof wine, with the compliments of the hotel, andmade our way to dinner. In July 2012, The DiningRoom at The Oakley Court Hotel was awarded aprestigious AA2 Rosette award. Just 10% ofrestaurants nationwide have one Rosette, so thisgives you an idea as to the size of head chef,Michael Mealey and his team’s achievement.

Using locally sourced and seasonal ingredients, itwas obvious to us that the restaurant was a priorityand not an after-thought as in so many hotelrestaurants. Almost full on a Thursday, there wereclearly locals dining in the restaurant which bearstestament to its glowing reputation. The service wasfirst class and the food impressive. During the dayor on warmer evenings, it would be nice to eat alfresco on the terrace overlooking the river.

Between us we enjoyed, for starters, slow cookedchicken terrine with shitake, foie gras and figcompote, oven roasted pigeon with roastedpumpkin, puy lentil and cumin and the childrenwent straight for their main courses off thechildren’s menus (well, Ed actually devoured twohimself – one burger and one chicken!).

For our main courses, Tina chose the 48hr porkbelly with garlic purée, braised red cabbage, sweetparsnip and “crispy crackling”, whilst I had the panroasted cod with red pepper, baby aubergine andchorizo risotto. All plates were cleared – anastonishingly good meal for all of us. We even hadroom to sample the delectable desserts - applemincemeat with pain perdu, cinnamon and toffeeapple, star anise and muscavado mousse with

orange liqueur and glazed Orange and two darkchocolate ganaches with milk chocolate and portice cream.

Pleasantly replete, we went back to the room torelax and slip into a long, comfortable sleep.

Morning was a different day – beautiful blue sky, with the sun beating down on the lawns whereguests were enjoying their early morning strolls. Wehad ordered breakfast in the room and after anassortment of smoked salmon and scrambledeggs, Frosties, apple Danish and croissants, wedecided to go with the flow and walk around thegardens.

As we watched the boats go by, we could fullyappreciate the appeal of The Oakley Court.Relaxing, first class service, excellent food andwonderful facilities. The Oakley Court really leavesyou wanting for nothing.

COUTTSB4 were invited to the Coutts branch in Oxford to meet Alan Higgins, the bank’s chief Investment officer for the UKand local client partner Maggie Bradley in advance of a Coutts client presentation at Said Business School. The keytopics discussed were the Eurozone crisis and the outlook for the UK economy, with a particular focus on record lowinterest rates. By B4’s Richard Rosser and Lucy Holmes.

As his job title suggests, Alan is responsiblefor managing the UK-based investmentportfolios at Coutts, although as a votingmember on the Investment StrategyCommittee, he also has a significantinfluence on shaping the bank’s overallglobal investment strategy. With more thantwenty years of experience of managingclient money in the City, Alan has embraceduncertain economic and stock marketconditions before.

We begin our conversation with Greece – a countrythat has been on the precipice of financialmeltdown for more than two years now. TheEurozone crisis it triggered shows little sign ofeasing and its perilous financial state is a hugeconcern - not just for Greece but for all of Europe.

Alan believes that it is absolutely vital that Greecestays in the Eurozone. “Contagion is the key wordwhen discussing Greece,” he said.

He recalls Argentina’s currency devaluation in 2001when its banks were closed for a couple of days.“When they reopened, 10,000 pesos had plungedin value to just 2,000,” he said. “If that happenedin Greece – given 24/7 news on the television andthe internet - investors would immediately rush tofind a safe haven for their euros in Germany, Franceand Spain.

“This will mean those unfortunate enough to havetheir money tied-up in banks will suffer. This iscontagion. You can imagine the BBC interviewingan old Greek lady who complains, ‘‘I had 20,000euros and the government has taken the moneyoff me’.”

Alan draws some comfort from German Chancellor,Angela Merkel, who he believes understands thecontagion risk, hence her support for Greece.

He added: “Not all German politicians are behindGreece and that’s why there’s so much noise aboutthe situation. If Greece pressed ahead withdevaluation, you can just imagine if you lived inSpain, Italy, Portugal or Ireland that you would thinkto yourself ‘I’m not getting paid any interest so Imay as well take the money out of the bank’.”

The Coutts view is that Greece could leave theEurozone - and Alan admitted that if that were tohappen the damage would be very hard to contain.

If Greece exits the euro, other countries couldfollow and that would be “pretty catastrophic”, hesaid.

He added: “Nobody will forget the knock on effectsof Greece leaving the euro. Just imagine if acustomer of ours is looking to buy a villa in Portugalin five years time. They won’t have forgottenGreece and will want the price of that villa to bevery low to be attractive. It’s all very well everyonepredicting Greece will leave because the signs allpoint to it, but the implications and ramifications ofa Greek exit are disastrous, and we at Coutts don’tthink this has been fully appreciated. Weunderstand contagion and think this will prevent aGreek exit.”

Low interest rates here to stayAlan believes that record low interest rates will bearound for many years because inflation andspending cuts will be the tools used to help Britainreduce the deficit over time.

He said: “There seems to be a general consensusthat interest rates will stay low, but our view is thatrates will stay low for multiple, multiple years. It’sone way of paying off debt and the link with Greeceis this… companies, governments, individuals, havetoo much debt…..what can you do? You candefault - Greece has already done that once and itmay have to do so again. Or, you can grow yourway out.

“There are several emerging markets with stronggrowth, and, actually, to be fair, the US has shownstrong growth because taxation revenues havestarted to strengthen. Or you can inflate it away, ashas been suggested in the UK. But not in the1970’s style inflation that a lot of people mightimagine, but more subtly, in fact just like we aredoing now.

“So base rates at near zero, inflation at 2, 3 and4%. If you do that for long enough, that does helpto return the debt. In the UK our deficits are toolarge even for that but a bit of austerity and a bit ofinflation is basically where we are going.”

Alan said that when he talks to clients who want toinvest, he suggests that they should take “anyinteresting source of fixed income they can get”.

Coutts, he said has five portfolios, which includesa portfolio made up of 100% bonds to one which

is invested 100% equities. But its strongestperforming portfolio is focused on bonds and fixed-income - and it’s up about 7% net of fees over thepast year.

He added: “With any bank, you won’t get a returnon instant cash, but most banks will offer ratespaying around four times base rate, includingCoutts, if you are prepared to tie your money upfor a period of time.”

Despite all the gloom, Alan is optimistic that the UKwill avoid another deep recession – even thoughhe admits that the data might hint otherwise.

“The official GDP numbers show economic growthhas been zero or slightly negative for quite sometime. Unemployment has been coming down quitesharply, and unemployment is more reliable thanGDP which is distorted by things like people writingcomputer programmes from home, the new digitaleconomy, things like this which are really difficultto capture in an official GDP.

“Even in 2009, to give you a flavour, GDP growthcame out as -0.4 and the press said we were goingback into recession. Many journalists were saying‘doom and gloom’ but the number today is +0.4and we still don’t have 100% reliable data. We geta swing from negative to positive because we havemore information. So things aren’t good in the UKbut they’re not quite as bad as the GDP dataindicates.”

Alan is favouring equities that pay decent dividendsand that are relatively cheap to buy. “It seems to usthat severe recession isn’t going to take away yourdividends, so the question is whether the priceright.

“In the UK, the dividend yield is, a notunreasonable, 4%, and getting somewhat moretechnical, the price earnings ratio (the price you payfor profits) is about 12 times earnings, which isbelow average.”

Despite the uncertain outlook Alan does not thinkit is an unreasonable time to invest – especially forthose who can afford to take a longer-term view.He believes that the Eurozone will “muddlethrough” and that Germany will pay whatever ittakes to keep Greece in, while low interest rates willbe here for another five years.

“We may advise clients to stagger somemoney in, over six months or so. If you arein diversified bonds, we may advise clientsto increase risk a bit and take a bit of goaland equity risk in the portfolios.”

In advance of the Coutts client presentation,Maggie gave an insight into what the Couttsclients have in store.

“Of course everyone wants an answer butthere are no simple solutions. Our clients aregiven advice based on their absolutecircumstances and we have to take manydifferent factors into consideration, such astheir age, their income, tax bracket, whatassets they have already got, what theirexperiences have been. Ultimately, theyhave got to go away feeling very comfortablewith what you’re proposing.”

Coutts, said Maggie, prides itself on the closerelationship it has with its clients and whatmany need is reassurance.

She added: "We have very specialisedservices in terms of investments. I think alarge proportion of our clients are looking forsomeone who is going to be a steady pairof hands looking after their wealth goingforward.

“The relationship we have with our clients isvital because if you are seeing someoneconsistently, you are going to have to faceup to their questions when things are tough- as well as take the plaudits when things gowell. The relationship we have with ourcustomers is crucial and has always been akey component of what we do. It’s why ouradvice is and has to be well-researched.”

Maggie Bradley, Client Partner

“I think a large proportion of our clientsare looking for someonewho is going to be asteady pair of hands looking after theirwealth going forward”

The John Campbell beginningsIn the Spring of 1692, young Scot, JohnCampbell of Lundie, set up business as agoldsmith-banker at the sign of the ThreeCrowns in the Strand, London. The earliestrecords show not only did Campbell supplyplate and jewellery, he offered acomprehensive banking service: discountingbills, making loans and taking deposits. Manyof his customers were his fellow countrymen, including his clan chief, the powerful Duke ofArgyll. In 1708, Campbell took anotherScottish goldsmith, George Middleton, aspartner. John Campbell died in 1712. Thatyear, Middleton married his daughter, Mary.

The Middleton yearsMiddleton was heavily involved with thebusiness of the French financier, John Law.This, combined with the bursting of theSouth Sea and Mississippi Bubbles in 1720,led to Middleton stopping payment for threeyears. In 1727 George Campbell, thefounder’s youngest son, joined Middletonand in 1744 a third partner, David Bruce, entered the Bank. The goldsmith element ofthe business had declined since the 1720s.When Middleton died in 1747, the survivingpartners called themselves simply “Bankersof 59 Strand”, the Bank’s home from 1739.

The Coutts familyThe name Coutts first appeared in the title ofthe Bank in 1755. James Coutts, a Scottishbanker, was taken into partnership byCampbell on his marriage to Mary Peagrum, granddaughter of the founder. WhenCampbell died in 1760, James invited hisyoungest brother, Thomas, to join him. InJanuary 1761 the Bank became known asJames & Thomas Coutts. When James retiredin 1775, the Bank’s title changed to ThomasCoutts & Company, which it was to remainuntil Thomas’ death in 1822.

The Bank flourished under Thomas andhis partners Edmund Antrobus, EdwardMarjoribanks and Coutts Trotter. The longreign of George III was a period of majorpolitical, social and economic change. Coutts’customers were involved with such events asthe American War of Independence, theFrench Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars andthe opening of India and the Far East.Thomas’ customers, many of whom werealso friends, ranged from the monarch to theCovent Garden cowkeeper.

The Victorian eraDuring the Victorian era, the Bank had to facenew challenges in a fast-changing world.Developing industries were hungry forinvestment . New and successful joint stockbanks meant fierce competition for the old-established private banking houses. Coutts’name inspired confidence in the Bank duringhis lifetime. It was Angela Burdett-Coutts asthe heir to the name and fortune, who wasseen as the public face of the Bank in theVictorian period.

Into the 20th CenturyThe Baring crisis of 1890 forced a numberof banks to re-assess their position. Coutts &Co, after much careful consideration, decidedto change its status. In June 1892 the Bankdissolved the partnership and became anunlimited liability company. 1904 saw morechange. After 165 years at 59 Strand, theBank moved to its current site at 440 Strand. The merger of the Westminster Bank and theNational Provincial in January 1969 meantthat Coutts came to form part of the largerNatWest group.

Modern timesThroughout the 20th century, Coutts openedmore branches. The first West End branchoutside 440 Strand was opened in 1921 inPark Lane. In 1961 the bank opened its firstout-of-town branch at Eton. Coutts embracedmodern technology, becoming one of thefirst banks to bring in machine-postedledgers in the late 1920s. In 1963 it was thefirst British bank to have a fully computerisedaccounting system. In 1987, Coutts gainedinternational representation when Couttsestablished operations in Geneva. InOctober 1990, Coutts and NatWestdecided to strengthen their representationinternationally and the Coutts Group wascreated when subsidiaries already ownedby Coutts and NatWest (includingHandelsbanken) were merged.

The acquisition of the NatWest group in2000 established Coutts as the wealthmanagement arm of the Royal Bank ofScotland.

TAX FORENTREPRENEURSEXPLAINEDEntrepreneurs have been much maligned inrecent years as among those not paying theirfair share of tax. Equally, however, thegovernment has introduced many tax incentivesaimed at entrepreneurs, which recognise howthey use their additional cash investing inbusinesses to stimulate the sluggish economyand benefit us all.

Income taxThe top rate of tax is currently 50% for income inexcess of £150,000, but this is reducing to 45%from 6 April 2013. If considering taking a bonus, itis worth bearing in mind the timing to takeadvantage of the reduction from 50% to 45%.

Tax efficient investments such as EnterpriseInvestment Scheme (EIS) and Venture CapitalTrusts (VCT) attract income tax relief of 30% on

investments of up to £1 million and £200,000respectively. In addition, the new Seed EnterpriseInvestment Scheme (SEIS) gives income tax reliefof 50% on qualifying investments up to £100,000.There are various criteria that both investor andcompany have to meet to qualify for these reliefsbut some of these have been relaxed in recentyears to make the relief more available.

Pension planningPensions are a tax efficient way of saving forretirement. Each person has an annual allowanceof £50,000 (gross), which can be contributed topension funds. Any unused annual allowancesduring the previous three tax years can be carriedforward and used now, which means anyone couldpotentially invest up to £200,000 now.

Pensions are tax efficient in a number of ways:

• for every £1 put into a money purchase pension, the government adds 25p, which accounts for thebasic rate tax that would have been paid on thisincome

• higher or additional rate taxpayers can claimfurther tax relief of 20% or 30% (25% from 6 April2013) respectively on their pension contributions

• the investments grow in the pension free ofincome tax and CGT

• tax benefits can be further enhanced if paid byan employer.

There is a limit on the value of retirement benefitsthat can be drawn from pension schemes beforetax penalties apply.

Vicky Lad from the Oxford office of leading business and financial adviser Grant Thornton UK LLPgives an overview of legitimate tax planning opportunities around income tax and capital gainstax (CGT) available to entrepreneurs.

www.b4-business.com26

“Some of the investments and planning tools can be complex, so it is always worth speaking to a professional tax adviser to ensure

adequate tax planning”

Page 27: B4 Magazine Berkshire Issue 4

Capital gains taxThe CGT rate is currently 28% (or 18% up to thebasic rate band limit for basic rate taxpayers). Thisis considerably less than the current income tax rateso, wherever possible, it is best to receive fundsthat are classed as a capital gain rather thanincome.

Another simple planning tool is to transfer assetsto a spouse prior to sale so make use of theirannual exemptions and use up their basic ratebands. Care should be taken if the asset alsoqualifies for entrepreneurs' relief (ER) as you couldeasily lose this valuable relief by transferring aqualifying asset. Transfers between spouses are nottaxable. However, if you were consideringtransferring assets to other individuals, for example, your children, then a capital gain could arise.

A particularly useful tool for the entrepreneur is ER.If ER is available then the capital gain will be taxedat the lower rate of 10% on gains of up to £10million over your lifetime. ER is generally availableon a material disposal of business assets, whichincludes shares in a company of which the

shareholder owns at least 5% and is an employee, director or company secretary. There are variouscriteria that need to be met to qualify for this relief, the main one being that the qualifying conditionsmust have been met for a whole year prior todisposal. Therefore, if you are planning to sell abusiness or business asset in the future, it isimperative that you start planning well in excess ofa year before the sale to ensure that you will qualifyfor ER.

Investments in EIS/VCT are also efficient for CGTpurposes. Any gains made on the investmentsthemselves are not taxable. In addition, if you haveother capital gains in a year, you can defer thecapital gain with the investment into the EIS subjectto certain conditions. Again, care should be takenif the asset being sold qualifies for ER as this could

be a trade-off between losing ER to obtain thedeferment.

And finallyThese are just a few of the tax relief tools availablethat are supported by the government. Some of theinvestments and planning tools can be complex, soit is always worth speaking to a professional taxadviser to ensure adequate tax planning.

As soon as we arrived we were seated upstairsin the restaurant area, which was subtlydecorated for the festive season. We wereimmediately offered the food and drinks menu. After a bit of deliberation over the vast drinksmenu we plumbed for a bottle of merlot. Thewaitress was quick to bring the wine over to us,along with a bottle of water and we were readyto place our orders.

The Sunday lunch menu had a selection of startersand deserts, priced at £4 each. The mains werepriced at between £9.95 and £16.95. There was agood selection of food on offer for those who donot fancy a roast on a Sunday.

Amanda decided to have the Salmon, SmokedHaddock & Lobster Croquettes for starters, whereasEleanor and I decided we would try and leave someroom for desert. We were not waiting long for thestarter. It was the perfect combination of a thin andcrunchy outside and light and delicate on the inside. The haddock was the predominant favour, withsubtle tones of lemon that created an impeccablecroquette, which was topped with a deliciousyoghurt & caper dressing.

There was a really good choice of mouthwateringoptions for the main event. I choose the lambroast; Eleanor and Amanda choosing the chickenand duck. Each meal was served with a light andfluffy Yorkshire pudding, deliciously crispy honeyroast carrots & parsnips, green beans, peas, braisedred cabbage with apple, cauliflower with a cheese& mustard sauce, chipolatas wrapped in bacon, andfinally, several delightful stuffing balls. All topped

with a rich red gravy. It was clear to us we wouldbe unlikely to fit any deserts in.

The lamb and duck were lightly pink and perfectlytender, and the chicken was moist and tasty. Theaccompanying vegetables were cooked beautifully.Midway through the main course the grand pianoat the bottom of the sweeping staircase piped up,the pianist playing a collection of modern andfestive tunes. Perfect for creating a relaxed Sundayafternoon atmosphere.

After our dishes were cleared away we sat andenjoyed the busy festive atmosphere. We wereoffered the desert menu which was filled with

traditional sticky toffee puddings, chocolatemousses and crème brûlées. All extremelytempting. However, after being filled with thebeautiful Sunday lunch it was clear that howevermuch we were tempted by the selection on offerwe were not going to be able to fit any of it in.

We instead finished our glasses of wine whilstsoaking in the fantastic variety of songs beingplayed cheerfully from the grand piano. We weresad to eventually leave to continue the task ofChristmas shopping, having made ourselves verycomfortable. I will definitely be returning again foranother Sunday lunch and highly recommend youdo to.

B4 ADVICE

Last week, an employee of the TraffordHousing Trust, who had been demoted andhad his salary cut by 40% for a posting thathe made on his Facebook page, wassuccessful in his High Court claim for breachof contract against his employer.

Adrian Smith expressed the view, on a page onFacebook which was not visible to the generalpublic but critically was visible to several of hiscolleagues who were connected to him on thesite, that gay marriages in church would be “anequality too far”. When questioned by one ofthese colleagues, via a comment on Facebook,

what he meant by this, he explained that he hadno objection to the State giving civil marriage togay couples, but that in his opinion “the stateshouldn't impose its rules on places of faith andconscience”.

The trust took the view that in expressing thisopinion, Mr Smith infringed the code of conductwhich formed part of his employment contract,by expressing views on religious or politicalmatters which might be upsetting to co-workers.Mr Justice Briggs in the High Court made clearin no uncertain terms that the Trust hadmisapplied its policy and thereby committed a“serious and repudiatory” breach of its contract. The Judge was equally clear that Mr Smith haddone nothing wrong.

It is tempting to view this case on its specificfacts, as a case about the misunderstanding ofan employer's social media policy, and the

importance of disciplinary responses which areproportionate to the breach that occurs. Even inthis narrow respect the case carries an importantobject lesson for any employer looking to applysuch policies. The Trust no doubt believed thatthey were acting to prevent discrimination. Butthe consequences for them have been severe:even if the damages they ended up paying havebeen very low, the costs they will have incurredin defending Mr Smith’s claim are likely not tohave been. It also seems likely that if Mr Smithhad pursued his complaint in the EmploymentTribunal, his damages could have beensignificantly higher.

But the case is of equal interest when viewed inits wider context. At the moment social mediaissues are enjoying a particular prominence inthe press and in the public consciousness. Adebate is going on about appropriate onlinebehaviour, informed in part by the Director ofPublic Prosecution's consultation on theboundaries of when conduct on Twitter andelsewhere ought to be prosecuted. At Pitmans,we have seen a notable rise in the number ofenquiries and instructions we are receiving inrelation to sometimes quite serious cases ofdefamation or harassment involving the internet.

But caution is required. There has been anerroneous tendency for social media users notto regard postings made on blogs or messageboards as subject to the same constraints asmore mainstream publications. Equally, there isnow a danger that employers, rightly concernednot to be seen to be promoting or condoning

genuinely harmful or discriminatory conduct, may err too far the other way. In a statementmade after his success in Court, Mr Smith saidthat "[s]omething has poisoned the atmospherein Britain, where an honest man like me can bepunished for making perfectly polite remarksabout the importance of marriage.”

Employers, like the public at large, need to becareful. In seeking to prohibit the most obviousforms of discrimination they must not subscribeto more subtle and insidious prohibitions on thefundamental rights that everyone has, to holdopinions and to express them honestly as part

of a wider social dialogue. In an environmentwhere the legal boundaries of expression arestill being evolved, the consequences ofinadvertently over-stepping the mark can beserious, time-consuming, and costly.

He had committed— would still have committed, even if he had never setpen to paper— the essential crime that contained all others in itself. Thoughtcrime, they called it.” - GeorgeOrwell, 1984

This year’s anniversary arrived at a pivotal phasein the station’s history, one of the very last fewremaining independent, commercial, local radiostations in the UK.

With developments such as the movement intodigital and ever increasing media platforms, as wellas the subsequent need to diversify revenuemodels, many of the UK’s formerly independentcommercial radio stations now belong to majorconglomerates where programming is networkedacross vast and often disparate regions of thecountry. It’s been a necessary trend for many localstations who have seen this as the only resolutionto challenging conditions. But what about Reading107? Should it become consumed into the abidingswathe of networked radio or fight its corner as thelast remaining jewel in the Thames Valleybroadcasting crown?

The answer to this, for Reading 107’s owner SirJohn Madejski, is very clear:

“I am well aware of the issues facing theindependent commercial radio sector and manypeople would probably question whether we atReading 107 can survive and buck the trendnationally, but I really do believe that with thestation we have enormous potential movingforward. The more I think about it, the more Ibelieve in the power that a local radio station, andI mean truly local radio station, has and is worthholding onto. We have an incredibly strongcommunity in Reading and the surrounding areasand I genuinely think that the radio station is thereto serve that community, be it local businesses, schools, charities and of course individual listeners.Reading 107 is proud to be part of that communityand will continue to be for as long as we can makethe station work.”

In recent months Reading 107 has seen a wholerange of exciting new additions and improvements, including a refreshed music policy, which continueto build on its unique strengths as an independentlocal station.

Reading Unplugged launched in October and is aweekly show from 7-10pm on Sundaysshowcasing the best in local talent and music. Theshow is not just limited to bands and acousticsingers, but also introduces producers, DJs andeven comedians to the Reading 107 audience. Theshow aims to seek out ways of staying connectedwith the local community by inviting listeners toreview local gigs and events for Reading 107.

The station has also upped the ante this year withits partnerships with local charitable organisations, promoting and hosting events including the Give aChild a Chance campaign and the return of theFireworks Extravaganza with the Reading Lions.Prior to this Reading had gone without a majorfireworks display for ten years and this year’s muchcelebrated event attracted over 6,000 people, solely through promotion on Reading 107, raisingan outstanding £10,000+ for local charities. Thisyear Reading 107’s presenters have also hostedReading’s Got Talent, the Broad Street MallChristmas Lights Switch On and the inimitable Pride

of Reading Awards, now in its ninth year, for whichReading 107 also sponsored the Young Person ofthe Year category.

Next year plans are afoot to introduce someinteresting new programmes to the station. The SirJohn Madejski Interviews will be a weekly interviewhosted by Sir John at midday on Sundays andpromises to be a fascinating insight into the livesand careers of some of Berkshire’s most inspiringand exemplary leaders and business people.Another addition will be the Business Briefing eachweekday. The idea being that as the station growsits revenue base, the Business Briefing will giveclients the opportunity to tell Reading 107’slisteners of their news and successes.

It seems Reading 107 has a lot to shout about andthe station has invested in a total upgrade to itsantenna transmitter over the summer, providing astronger signal and extended coverage acrossReading and beyond. The station is also looking todevelop more apps for mobile streaming andopportunities to share news content with ITVMeridian, with some of their staff now based atReading 107 news team’s office.

There are plenty more plans in the pipeline to keep

Reading 107 at the forefront of developments intechnology and to keep the station competitive, relevant and in touch with its audience andextended community. The way forward is clear forReading 107 going into its second decade ofbroadcasting, to remain as the truly local radiostation from Reading, for Reading and thesurrounding areas.

B4 SPOTLIGHT

BDO, working in conjunction with the Twenties Club, are undertaking aquarterly barometer for businesses operating in the Thames Valley tomeasure how businesses are feeling about the economic conditions, andto provide an opportunity for businesses to benchmark themselves againstothers within the region on areas of performance, recruitment andinvestment. 85 Thames Valley businesses participated in the Barometer 2survey which opened on 2 July and ran for two months. The Barometeralso includes a number of in-depth profiles of a cross section of ThamesValley businesses including in this quarter: CH&Co, Peter Brett Associates,Regus UK, Romans and SAS UK. These companies shared theirperspectives on their own performance during the last three months, thekey challenges they face and the prospects for the Thames Valley region.

Despite the glow generated by the Queens Diamond Jubilee, the London 2012Olympics and the Paralympics, UK business confidence hit a 20 year low inAugust according to the BDO UK Business Trends report which measuresoptimism among businesses across the UK. The brief resurgence seen earlierin 2012 when confidence reached a high of 98.0 on the Optimism Indexplummeted to 89.1 in August, the lowest level since 1992 when comparabledata was first tracked. Confidence levels and UK economic prospects havebeen following a somewhat zigzag path.

Economic confidence - dipping slightlyWhen it comes to the Thames Valley, the Barometer 2 survey indicates thatoptimism and business confidence remains higher in the region than for theUK as a whole. In the Thames Valley, the results remain tentatively positive.Overall economic confidence in the Thames Valley dipped slightly from lastquarter, with 73% saying that the economy has improved or remained thesame compared to 82% in the previous quarter.

New business pipelines and turnover are increasing in the ThamesValley - with some leveling out expectedMore than half (54%) state that new business pipelines and order books areincreasing and, although this is down 10% from the last Barometer, it is still avery positive result. There is some leveling out in terms of expectations for thenext three months, with approximately one third of companies forecasting noimprovement in turnover or profitability in the next quarter.*Barometer 1, April/May 2012

Investing in peopleThe Barometer finds Thames valley businesses are investing in their people, interms of headcount, in training and development, and have a very positiveattitude towards apprenticeships and work placement schemes. Headcounthas increased for 40% of respondents this quarter and is expected to increaseat a similar level (42%) in the next three months. The single biggest area forbusiness investment is training and development (38% of respondents).

The BDO Thames Valley Business Barometer... a compelling street-level view of business sentiment, helping to informdecisions on growth, investment and employment in the region.

“However, we too are seeing evidence of a zigzagpath to recovery, with a greater degree of caution,

more muted confidence and lower expectations

of growth than reported in Barometer 1”Julian Frost, partner and head of BDO in the Thames Valley

Page 41: B4 Magazine Berkshire Issue 4

Investment plansIn addition to training and development, businesses are planning investmentin marketing (32% of respondents) and technology (31%). Only 5% areinvesting in fleet and transport and just 2% in property.

Availability of financeThe availability of finance is still seen as a major blocker for business growth.More than half (56%) of the region's businesses believe that the situation hasnot improved, with many stating that obtaining finance is no easier than whenthe recession started. However, there is a slight increase in those finding theavailability of finance easier - 16% of respondents compared to 11% InBarometer 1 - and interviewees expressed a range of views.

Investment agenda Looking forward, more than half see investment in superfast broadband ascritical for the Thames Valley to remain competitive, and nearly half feel thatapprenticeship schemes and work placements schemes are extremelyimportant.

house’ of the UK economy and it certainly

has been weathering the storm more

confidently than other regions in the UK”Julian Frost, partner and head of BDO in the Thames Valley

Recently, Valerie Todd, Commissioner at the UKCommission for Employment and Skills, stressed that, “Businesses who want a highlyskilled workforce for the future must take aconscious decision to help young people makethe move from education into work”.Consequently, the role of the employer hasbecome increasingly pivotal in the developmentof young talent, as they can offer workexperience placements to fulfill this move. These placements are growing in demand, andin importance.

The Work Experience Scheme at Reading Collegewas launched in September 2011 with the aim oforganising valuable work experience placements forstudents studying business-related topics to gainreal-world skills and experience. However, thebenefits to the business are equally important andthis scheme facilitates the acquirement of youngand enthusiastic staff with current skills and freshideas, as well as promoting the image of the

business, and their social responsibility agenda, within the local community.

The placements can either be full time for a short, defined period of time or one day per week over arelatively longer period of time. In the last academicyear, a range of local employers offered 97placements to our students and 20% of them wereso impressed with the calibre of College studentsthat they have offered them a job related to thesubject of their course. Companies we haveworked with include major businesses such asBMW, BDO and Holiday Inn.

As our role involves working closely with variousemployers, we can gather their perspective on thebenefits of offering work experience placements. They are as follows:

Introduce new skills to your businessOur students, who study a wide range of subjects, learning specialist vocational skills, can benefit an

organisation directly by bringing these desirablespecialist skills. As they are still in education, theyare up to date with current trends and newdevelopments, allowing them to bring a newperspective and generate brand new ideas.Employers provide us with detail of the requiredskills, on the basis of which we individually matchstudents to placements by running a strictrecruitment process, ensuring suitability for the role.International car manufacturer BMW, stated tous, “Having a student for work experience bringsa different dynamic into the team. Our placementstudent is a young, smiley student who has a freshperspective on the work we do.”

Long term recruitment investmentNo recruitment agency would allow you to take apotential candidate for a trial period. In contrast, byoffering a work experience placement you can usethis time to assess a candidate and evaluate theirsuitability to job requirements. If you are impressed, you can offer them a job with no recruitment fees

involved, knowing that you have already begunmoulding them into the role, they can hit theground running and they will excel. Our studentswork hard to achieve full-time employment andare understandably delighted when their workexperience placement turns into a job opening, asit boosts their future prospects and employability.Holiday Inn were glad to say that, “Our workexperience student is brilliant and I can see a brightfuture for her within our organisation”.

Positive impact on students’ lifeNot only can work experience benefit anorganisation, but also it makes a huge impact ona young person’s life. Through a placementopportunity, students will not only develop essentialemployability skills, but also explore their careeroptions and boost their confidence. When askedabout the benefits of work experience placement, students express their appreciation by stating,“Work experience helped me to finalise my futurecareer plans and boosted my confidence”.

Dependable employability skillsYou may agree that a work experience studentcould benefit your business but query the qualityof their work ethic, as it is frustrating to work withan individual who is not reliable, not on time, andnot keen to learn. The Work Experience Schemeat Reading College prepares students, in theseregards, with mandatory attendance of a series ofworkshops developing their employability skills. These workshops have been designed to beemployer focussed, following advice provided byemployers we work closely with, so that thestudents meet the expectations upon them, “TheReading College student working with us was agreat asset to the company,” BDO.

No extra hassleThere is no need to worry about administrativeissues or be overwhelmed by the amount ofpaperwork to complete. Before agreeing to aplacement, simply agree with the provider that youwill be supported when completing required

documentation. At Reading College, we appreciateemployers’ busy schedules and, as a result, we notonly keep the paperwork to a minimum but alsofully support employers in the administrationprocess.

As presented above, work experience is not onlybeneficial for the student, but also for the employer. Before saying yes to a company managing workexperience placements, it is advisable to check theirprocesses, including development and support. Welike to maintain strong links with the students andemployers who work with the College, making surethat all development and support requirements aremet.

Since September 2012, it has been an offencefor a person to enter a residential building as atrespasser for the purpose of living there (underthe Legal Aid Sentencing and Punishment ofOffenders Act 2012). An offence is committedif a person entering residential property:

(i) knows (or ought to know) that he or she is atrespasser, and (ii) intends to live there for any period of time.

If landowners find squatters in their residentialproperties, they should call the police to report acriminal offence. There is no requirement to ask thetrespassers to leave before doing so. If an offence

has been committed, the maximum penalty onconviction is 6 months’ imprisonment or a fine of£5,000 or both.

It is, however, not an offence for a person to remainin occupation of residential property at the end ofa lease or licence.

“Squatters’ rights”Trespassers commonly display notices stating thatit is an offence for a landowner to break into theoccupied property. Claims to “squatters’ rights”,which appear to unfairly protect the interests of thewrongdoer, are however based on clear statutoryprovisions. The Criminal Law Act 1977 makes it anoffence for a person, without lawful authority, touse or threaten violence to secure entry to

premises against the wishes of the occupier. Thiscan include breaking windows or locks to gainentry. This means that landowners must actcarefully when seeking to remove trespassers, i.e.they should enter the land only when nobody is onthe premises, or call in the police, or instruct bailiffsto evict squatters having obtained a possessionorder (“PO”).

Removing squattersAlthough it is often necessary to obtain a PO toremove squatters, there are a number of otheroffences linked to squatting which may justifypolice intervention (it may be necessary to producedetailed evidence to persuade the police to act):-

• Failing to leave a residential property (includingits garden) after being required to do so by a“displaced residential occupier” or “a protectedintending occupier” (i.e. lawful occupiers whohave been displaced by the trespasser)• Causing criminal damage, e.g. breaking doors orwindows to gain access• Theft or burglary, e.g. removing items from theproperty• Abstracting electricity; and• Failing to leave a property within 24 hours ofservice of an Interim Possession Order (“IPO”).

Non-residential buildings and landThe 2012 Act does not affect non-residentialbuildings or open land. As a result, squatters maynow target commercial properties (particularly if

empty) in preference to residential properties. Ifthey do, and no offence has been committed, aparty with an interest in the property (e.g. aslandowner or tenant) should apply to court for aPO or IPO.

Either procedure will generally give rise to a hearingwithin a matter of days. Where an IPO has beenmade, the squatter commits an offence by failingto vacate within 24 hours of service of the IPO orby returning to the property within a year.

Starting proceedings can in itself be effective. It iscommon, by the time the hearing takes place, forthe trespassers to have moved on.

Practical steps when dealing with squatters• Secure land and buildings to guard against the riskof unlawful occupation • Check buildings and boundary fences regularly toconfirm they are locked and secured• Construct physical barriers to prevent access toland• Act quickly to secure the early removal oftrespassers, before land or buildings aredamaged.• Do not give trespassers permission to stay, evenfor a short period.

PREVENTING AND RESPONDINGTO PROBLEMS WITH SQUATTERSJohn Morrison, property disputes partner at Manches LLP in Thames Valley, describes the removal of squatters fromresidential properties and how changes in the law may increase risks to empty commercial buildings and land.

“If landowners find squatters in their residential properties, they should call the police to report a criminal offence.”

However,we’re dedicated to boosting confidence and itsgradual rise since May is helping us support thosebusinesses that see opportunities.

How do we support this commitment? We’reencouraging enterprise by assisting businesses intheir start-up and expansion plans and one way weare doing this is through the Lloyds Funding forLending scheme, which utilises the Government’sFunding for Lending Scheme, to allow Berkshirebusinesses to benefit from reduced funding costs. This means we can offer a one per cent reductionin the interest rate for new business loans and hirepurchase.

Local knowledge, local supportPerhaps our biggest commitment is to localknowledge. This supports our undertaking to meetevery reasonable request from viable businessesfor competitive, commercially priced finance.

Our Senior Managers and Relationship Managersacross Berkshire have personal authority tosanction lending applications, which means quickdecisions can be made by managers whounderstand the customer’s business and itsambitions, as well as the wider economy.

OPEN AND READYFOR BUSINESSBY PAUL SMART, AREA DIRECTOR FORLLOYDS TSB COMMERCIAL IN THETHAMES VALLEYThere’s a common misconception that banks aren’t lending. Lloyds TSBCommercial most certainly is. As part of Lloyds Banking Group, we lent£12.5bn last year to small and medium sized enterprises and we’re on trackto exceed this in 2012*. This is in contrast to a decline in net lending growthacross the industry of four per cent.

B4 EDUCATION

That was one of the findings from new researchcarried out for Lloyds TSB Commercial, whichcanvassed the opinions of 419 businesses inthe South East to discover their experiences ofaccessing finance.

The majority of South East firms said they had agood understanding of traditional borrowingmethods, such as business loans (99 per cent) andoverdrafts (97 per cent), with 71 and 90 per centrespectively having used one of these in the past.

However, a far smaller proportion had ever utilisedalternative funding methods such as invoicediscounting (nine per cent) or asset based lending(19 per cent). Indeed, less than half of respondents(48 per cent) claimed to even have any awarenessof asset based lending.

The main motivator that would inspire South Eastfirms to pursue alternative finance methods wouldbe to boost working capital (11 per cent).

Paul Smart, area director for Lloyds TSBCommercial in the Thames Valley, said: “This new

research highlights that while most South Eastbusinesses are comfortable with traditionalborrowing through business loans and overdrafts, alternative sources of finance are much lessunderstood.

“Mechanisms such as asset based lending canprovide a useful and relevant alternative to allowbusinesses to pursue new growth projects whilekeeping control of their cashflow, and it is definitelyworth business owners taking the time to researchand explore these alternative methods.

Understanding of Government-backed fundingprogrammes was also low, with less than a quarter(24 per cent) claiming a good understanding of theEnterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme and lessthan half (48 per cent) saying they understood thenew Funding For Lending scheme, through whichbanks can offer a reduction in interest rates.

This new scheme operates under the LloydsFunding for Lending banner. This allows eligible UKbusinesses to benefit from reduced funding costsand offers:

• A one per cent reduction in the pricing of newbusiness loans and hire purchase• Available to all SME and mid market customers, regardless of the sector they operate in• The discount will be for the full term of the loan• Minimum loan amount is £1,000 with nomaximum limit

The scheme follows on from the successfulcompletion of the Government’s National LoanGuarantee Scheme, where Lloyds committed all ofits £1.4bn allocation to small and medium sizedenterprise customers.

Paul Smart added: “At Lloyds TSB we can tailorfunding packages to meet the needs of individualbusiness owners by combining both traditional andmore alternative forms of funding. This includesGovernment-backed programmes such as theFunding for Lending Scheme, through which we arekeen to make finance available to smallbusinesses.”

Burnham Health Centre, located on MinniecroftRoad, was established in 1971 by the localhealth authorities and was later acquired by agroup of partners who renovated the facilitybefore growing it to become one of SouthBuckinghamshire’s largest health centres, caringfor over 18,000 patients.

The centre has also introduced an onsite LloydsPharmacy which has relocated to the practice fromBurnham High Street in order to provide a moreconvenient and easily accessible service forpatients.

I have had the privilege of witnessing David’sfantastic qualities first hand, albeit I spent mostof the time following his vapour trail from Paristo Oxford. Nonetheless his leadership, motivation and single minded determinationwere the reason we embarked on the B4 bikeride last year. If it wasn’t for David, I wouldn’thave launched the first B4 bike ride and mostcertainly wouldn’t have completed it. That’s alldown to David’s infectious enthusiasm and hiscan do attitude which must be an enormousasset to his colleagues at Buildbase.

So where did it all begin for this likeable lad fromOxford Born and educated in South Oxford, Davidwas an exceptional sportsman, captainingOxfordshire County Under15’s and 16’s football. He went on to captain England’s Under 16’swinning team in the Euroman EuropeanChampionships, winning Man of the Match in thefinal and Player of the tournament following in thefootsteps of Liverpool’s Steve Heighway no less.David also made schoolboy appearances for CrystalPalace & Reading before joining Coventry City forapprenticeship trials. Having missed out onbecoming a professional he joined Marlow Townand played to a very high standard of semi Profootball.

David qualified as a Carpenter – Joiner - WoodMachinist when he left school and also passed aBTEC in Building studies. He joined local builder’smerchant, RJ Johnsons, in 1987 as a telephonesalesman. When the business was acquired byGrafton Group plc in 1996 and rebranded asBuildbase, David was already a key member of theJohnsons team and was quickly recognised and hiscareer progression soon began.

He’s very much a man in demand and hiswillingness to dig deep and help out mean thatevery minute of every day are precious. Before westart the interview, David is trying to find a tenminute spot in his hectic schedule to have ameeting with a colleague, much easier said thandone!

Having recently reached the 25 year milestone atBuildbase, which David admits still puts a smile onhis face, David recounts his fascinating rise. “My firstrole at the old R J Johnson was working in telesales,

but I was quickly promoted to a SalesRepresentative role and shortly after that, FieldSales Manager and then Key Accounts Manager.

“In twelve years on the road I developed a fantasticportfolio of clients, many of whom have becomeclose friends. In 2000 I was promoted to RegionalSales Manager in London and spent five yearscommuting from Oxford to London where I wasconcentrating on building a team of salespersonsto grow the London business. I then became theRegional Director for North London in 2005 whereI was responsible for sales and operational budgets.

“In 2006 I came home, working as RegionalDirector Central Region in the office that I hadactually built many years ago above Johnsons inCowley. I spent six happy years at Johnsons beforemy recent promotion to Commercial Director ofBuildbase, a more strategic role where I link thesupport centre, head office, and suppliers to thesharp end of the business, the 146 branches.”

David is very much a people person, as he admits.“I’m at my best dealing with staff, customers andsuppliers. I have never forgotten my roots, whichhelps me to deal with any situation. I am constantlytaking calls from staff and the key thing is that Ihave been there and done it in my career whichhelps to come up with a logical answer. I love thechallenge of getting the last ounce out of my teamand relish the role of team leader – like getting youup that bloody hill!” Yes thanks Dave!

According to David’s colleagues, he is alwayssmiling and one was heard saying ‘you know he’scoming because you can hear him whistling beforeyou see him!”

But it’s not all sunshine. Through the smiles Davidhas had to deal with a tough economy, personalloss and plenty of hard work. “We enjoyed theboom time of the late1980’s and 1990’s wheneveryone was building, but the last few years havebeen very difficult. I have to thank two people whomean the world to me. I will always be very gratefulto both of them for their contributions to my careerand life. Martin Lee, now retired from Buildbase, took me on in 1987 and was my MD and a realfather figure. Martin helped me to become theperson I am today. Another key person in my life

was Peter Butterfield. Sadly, Peter is no longer withus after passing away earlier this year. Peter wasalso my MD and was without doubt the cleverestperson I have ever had the pleasure to meet.Always there for me when I needed advice, withoutPeter I wouldn’t have made the progress I have.”

Outside of the office, David has led manyfundraising campaigns, including extensive charitywork for the Oxford Children’s Hospital. Davidchampioned a campaign to raise £55,000 to fundthe adolescent waiting room and beat this total toraise £63,500. David and several colleagueswalked 55km in one day as part of this initiative, despite the fact that he had a full hip replacementat the tender age of 39 due to a sporting injury.

But a little hip replacement was never going to stopthis bundle of energy! He was the true inspirationbehind the B4 bike ride, having asked B4 to joinhim on the London to Paris ride for Macmillan theyear earlier. He certainly showed those of youngeryears a clean pair of pedals on more than oneoccasion and was always the first up the tortuoushills. Everything that David does is portrayed in away which makes you want to get involved, and allof us on that ride last year have so much to thankDavid, and his wife Jane, for.

In his spare time as well as his passion for roadcycling he is also a keen golfer and walker, climbingSnowdon and Ben Nevis last year and also likes tovisit his daughter who is living and working in SanFrancisco.

David’s love of life, and his work, is refreshing andit’s great to be in his company. “I love to be happyand I love people to be happy at work too and intheir lives. It might be work but we may as wellenjoy it!”

“We have seen some very difficult and challengingtimes in our trading sector over the last few years, but thankfully there are signs of improvement andI am pleased to say that Buildbase are moreprepared and focused to dealing with Trade & Retailcustomers than ever before”

Visit one of Buildbase’s 146 branches today and ifyou hear or see a happy chap whistling, rememberto say hello. www.buildbase.co.uk

It was a cold, wet and windy Thursday eveningwhen we set off from Oxford for The Beetle andWedge in the former Boathouse at Moulsfordnear Wallingford. It took us just 25 minutes andwe were then shown to our corner table in thedelightful conservatory extension that had beenbuilt only 10 years ago. This was almost thesame time that Stephanie and Warren Musktook over the running of this beautifully situatedestablishment on the banks of the RiverThames.

They have more recently been awarded the‘Four star Restaurant with Rooms Rating’ underthe British Common Standard for GuestAccommodation, and earlier they were listed inThe Times ‘ 50 Best places to eat Al Fresco’.

As soon as we had taken our seats, olives, granarybread and butter were put on our table and the ginand tonics followed very quickly afterwards.

Sue ordered the crispy duck, ginger risotto cakewith plum sauce to start and I went for the

Madagascan crevettes with lime and coriandermayonnaise. Sue commented on the deliciouscoating of the cake and I was extremely pleasedwith the large prawns which were fresh and tasty. To accompany the starters we had the TangueroRose 2011, from Argentina which was a deep pinkand full of fresh summer fruits.

After just about the right time our main coursesarrived, the service was impeccable by the way, andSue was presented with a Mediterranean SeaBream with steamed Pak Choy, Crab Cake and

Beurre Blanc. To accompany this Sue had a glassof the Sauvignon Chateau Haut Grelon 2011,which borders the Gironde Estuary.

I am always keen on game at this time of year andI wasn’t to be disappointed with this locally shotpheasant, which came with mushrooms and a redwine and blackberry jus.

We both had some ‘rosti’ potatoes, a speciality ofthe restaurant as they come served in the pan,French beans and a tomato and shallot salad. Withthe pheasant I had a glass of Ladera Verde Merlot2011 from Chile, which was seriously good value. To finish we both had room for a vanilla crèmebrulee,’just’!

The evening was an absolute pleasure and heavenonly knows what it would be like on a balmysummers evening, dining ‘al fresco’!

The Christmas period in a hotel is a special timeof year, the very fact this hotel has witnessed169 previous festive seasons is a thought thatis quite difficult to comprehend. Between nowand the new year, the hotel fully expects to feedno less than 5,000 people, most of whom willlive or work within 5 miles of the hotel – it begsthe question, how many residents, both pastand present have frequented this hotel in itslifetime?

It is said that everything changes, there is no doubtthat the hotel has gone through some significantchanges during its long history. Built in 1844 andopening as ‘The Railway Hotel’ with theconstruction of the Great Western Railway, itchanged its name to ‘The Great Western Hotel’ in1925 and it is thought to be one of the oldestrailway hotels in the world. Used as the PaperMinistry during WWII, surviving a fire in 1964 andspending many years as a postal sorting office and

Berkshire Health Authorities headquarters, it wasrestored as a boutique hotel in 2007.

Five years down the line, this Malmaison is truly ahotel that dares to be different both in its designand service. With a change in the managementteam over the last year, General Manager, PaulWatson has daring plans of his own for the yearahead:

‘MAL’ DARE TO BE DIFFERENT IN2013, KEEP IT LOCALAt the time of writing this, there are exactly 36 days until we start a new year, however, between now and then thereis the small question of Christmas to contend with…

‘You’ve experienced hotel restaurants and barsbefore. In the past they’ve been avoided at all costsand then you head for the local eatery or wateringhole before retiring back to your room (lets noteven get started on the room service!). Its time toforget everything you ever believed about hoteldining and bars in the UK. Start believing in simpleBritish classic dishes, uncompromising in qualityand very generous portions. Believe in a greatchoice of wines and Champagnes. Believe in thatcheeky one (or two) after work and that spectacularschool night mojito; most importantly believe infriendly and effortless service!”

The restaurant itself is an űber stylish, low lit diningden of exposed industrial ceiling void andbrickwork, once you’ve arrived, you wouldn’t quitebelieve you’re in Reading. It is an oasis of pleasure.New Head Chef, Marcin Worzala wants to supportlocal “…there are some classic Mal dishes on themenu such as ‘The Stack’ (classic mal burger withonion rings and a Foie Gras slider), ‘The Mal Grill’(180gm fillet steak, ½ lobster and 3 King Prawns)and the ‘Steak Frites’….we also offer our home

grown and local menu at only £15.95 for twocourses and £19.95 for three courses, whichchanges daily and is dependant on the availableproduce from local suppliers”.

In keeping with the décor, the team believes in arelaxed and friendly approach to service. HelenBlower, Bar and Brasserie Manager believes “longgone are the days where the waiter stands onceremony, there is an art to delivering great service– staff that are there when you need them, staffthat will chat to you about your choices and howbest to enhance your meal or drink if you so desire,

staff that consider delivering genuine hospitalityabove all else”.

There has been a continued resurgence of thecocktail over time. The mixologists at the Mal loveto continuously improve their repertoire, perfectingthe classics and concocting new flavours to suit ourpatron’s needs. Add to that a great choice of wine,Champagne, beer and spirits and you should neverbe disappointed. The bar itself is the perfect

destination to sit with friends in a relaxedenvironment. Keeping the local theme, as is thehotels focus, they are the current sponsors ofReading Unplugged on 107. Watch out for the upand coming stars in the lounge on a Thursdayevening adding to what is already one of the mostdesirable destinations in Reading.

The Malmaison Reading has held a pivotal spot inthe town for many years. The team are set andready to ensure that this is the number one Bar andBrasserie and destination of choice for all in thelocal Berkshire area. It’s an exciting time at the

hotel with renewed energy delivered through themanagement team. Just make sure you don’t missout, dare to be different in 2013 and plan for a littleMal Life, its surely all anyone really wants forChristmas.

Those who know Bob will know only too wellthat his address book is one of the most soughtafter in the industry – and for good reason! TheWalton’ ‘magic’ as it is known, is legendary inhaving the ability to introduce and pairindividuals who can (and usually do) go on todo business together. And, those skills andcontacts have now been opened up to businessleaders across Berkshire and beyond.

With patrons including Chris Tarrant, the Earl ofBradford, Brian Turner, actor Dougray Scott, fashionentrepreneur, Donna Ida and former rugby player,Kenny Logan, The Nth Degree Club has alreadyattracted the interest of many entrepreneurs andprofessional leaders.

Bob is the first to say that “people buy from people”and this is a skill in which he personally excels. And, with the economic backdrop remaining toughfor many in the the concept of being aligned to aninfluential lifestyle club of genuine note has neverbeen more powerful.

It’s a simple yet clever idea that helps executivescollaborate effectively together and gives a genuineopportunity to build productive businessrelationships. With the business world increasinglylooking for different ways to engage their networks, this fresh new initiative bears all the hallmarks ofsuccess.

The Nth Degree members are high net worthindividuals who come together at regular eventsheld at London’s top private dining rooms. Withmember benefits including access to renownedconcierge service, Quintessentially, as well as in-town accommodation for under £130 at one ofLondon’s best known clubs, and significantdiscounts at prestigious outlets, the membershipcost of Classic (for London based constituents) ofunder £1,000 per annum seems exceptionallygood value and can be swiftly recouped, but that’snot what Bob sees as the over-riding attraction:

“Member benefits are certainly important but theultimate attraction has to be the personalities roundthe table and the power of the businessrelationships that can be created” he says. “Yes,we are dining in the finest establishments in theland but to be fair – many of the individuals we aretalking to would also have access to thoseestablishments. It’s about putting together the rightpeople in the right environment, making it fun andproductive in order to create new relationships anddrive the perfect catalyst for doing businesstogether”.

Already The Nth Degree Club has attracted theattention, and patronage, of some of the biggestnames on the UK restaurant circuit. Chefs for pastNth Degree events include Jason Atherton of PollenStreet Social, Mark Edwards of Nobu and ThomasKeller of The French Laundry, to name but a few ofthe chefs who have cooked personally for guestsand introduced the menus, adding a newdimension to the dining experience.

There are two levels of membership – the Classic(which suits a south east based member) costs£750 a year and the Plus membership offersadditional benefits to members from further afield.Key partners include Quintessentially, EtihadAirways and Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

Membership of the Club has grown quickly in thelast three months and the doors will be closing ataround 500 individuals.

“To maintain the exclusivity, we need to ensure wekeep our Club numbers at the right level”concludes Bob. “What the Nth Degree Club isoffering is a portal service, a door into an exclusiveworld where business and pleasure can mix to thebenefit of all.

Having spent 12 years on the consultancy-sidein London working almost exclusively withmultinationals and premium global householdname brands, Phil Strachan brings a wealth ofexperience and expertise to any project heworks on. Add to this the fact that prior to thathe spent 14 years on the client-side in themarketing departments of major blue chipmultinationals running premium brands such asNescafe and you can begin to grasp the valuehe can add to any business or brand he workswith.

“At one point trading as QED (Quite ExtraordinaryDesign), my business partners and I employed 22people and we were based in the converted ClergyHouse of St Michaels Church in London EC2. TheChurch itself had become the London ArchitecturalSalvage Company which was one of London’slargest and longest established architecturalantiques and salvage businesses. They werefantastic premises to run an Identity and Designbusiness from but combined with 22 people to payeach month, our overheads and operating costswere quite high.”

Nowadays, trading as Strangebrew, Phil offers hisspecial blend of client-side and consultancy-sideexperience and expertise from a low overheadbase in Berkshire, meaning that businesses andbrands of all shapes and sizes from one personstart-ups to long established businesses and brandscan benefit from an injection of what he callsBusiness and Brand Alchemy.

London quality at Glasgow prices

Having previously spent many years refreshing, revitalising, re-energising and relaunching majorbrands such as Alpen, Foster’s Lager and Pontin’sHoliday camps to name but a few, more recentprojects Phil has delivered have been much morevaried. These have included the repositioning andrelaunching of Aylesbury College, the creation of aMotivational Speaker brand for a sports and TVpersonality, and brand identities for a Martial Artsand Personal Trainer, an Accounting Practice and aTraining Consultancy.

“My overall aim is to deliver real value, what I call

London quality at Glasgow prices, and that meansbusiness and brand identities that really work ratherthan just nice logos which all too often don’t. Thereis an inordinate amount of money wasted on anawful lot of very ordinary work, design for design’ssake, when what is required is an investment insomething that truly captures and communicatesthe essence of a business or brand. Branding,Identity and Design, interlaced with creativity andinnovation, are all part of a business or brandconnecting, communicating and engaging with itstarget audience but in order to achieve thiseffectively, you firstly have to know exactly who thetarget market is, what the business or brand needsto be seen to stand for and what its competitiveadvantage is. It is all about adding value.”

Necessity is the mother of re-invention

So why then do we see so many businesses andbrands relaunching and being as you sayrefreshed?

“It may well just be that they did not get it right inthe first place, but while the objective is obviouslyto build successful brands that will be sustainableand stand the test of time, the simple fact is thatkey business environment factors such as marketconditions, economic climates and competitors areconstantly changing. In such instances, necessityreally is the mother of re-invention, requiringBusinesses and Brands to respond in order tocontinue to prosper by re-inventing, re-branding,refreshing, revitalising and relaunching themselvesas appropriate. Events like new competitors cominginto a market can prompt such action but the aimhas to be to always stay ahead of the curve. Thismeans being creative rather than reactive in orderto remain in control in your designatedmarket/sector and making sure that you arebuilding a strong and valuable brand rather than anineffectual and effectively worthless bland. It is allabout leading from the front and staying ahead.

It is important for businesses to periodically standback, take a long hard look at themselves andassess how they and their brands are positionedbecause even if they themselves are not changing, the odds are that their competitors are and so arethe needs of their customers and consumers. The

problem is that they are often too close to theirbusinesses to be able to see this for themselves”.

Faith, hope and too little clarity

“Businesses and brands need to know andcommunicate their “why” to their selected targetmarkets but the truth is that all too manybusinesses and brands out there are operating withblind faith, relying far too much on hope and withtoo little clarity in terms of what they really have tooffer and how they need to position and presentthemselves. All too often they don’t really knowtheir USP or their potential to build sustainablecompetitive advantage

That’s precisely why I put particular emphasis onmaking sure that I fully understand the businessand/or brand of any new client, their objectives andaspirations, their competitors, their strengths andweaknesses, opportunities and threats because itis only by distilling the essence of a business orbrand that I can identify how best to free its spiritby helping them to think brand – not bland.

There are many businesses and brands out therethat could really benefit from taking a good longhard look at themselves right now and it’s a greattime for getting back to basics. They should makeit their New Year’s resolution to re-evaluate thestrength of their competitive situation and identifyany action required refreshing their presentation orrebranding, relaunching or revitalising theirbusinesses. In today’s recessionary marketconditions, only the strong will survive and this canbe a very cost effective way and a very soundinvestment in order to ensure that they emergefrom these difficult times strongly positioned andwith a secure future ahead of them.”

Contact Phil Strachan on 07770 753 975 or byemail [email protected] if you would liketo arrange an initial no cost, no strings attachedmeeting to discuss how an injection of Businessand Brand Alchemy from Strangebrew could be ofbenefit to your Business or Brand.

It has become something of a tradition tovisit London before Christmas with thefamily, an opportunity to spend some timetogether and enjoy the capital ‘all dressedup’ for the festive season. With a 15 year oldand 12 year old going on 18, it’s hard totempt them away from i-this and i-that, butit didn’t take a vast amount of persuasiononce the offer of a weekend staying at oneof London’s most iconic hotels was on thetable!

As we arrived in London, the rain was lashing downand it was wonderful to pass the car keys to theporter who whisked the Beetle to, no doubt, enjoya comfy night alongside some grown up cars in thehotel garage. We were shown to our suite on the7th floor and as the bell boy explained how all thegadgets and gizmos worked, we were all juststaring, not at him but at the views over London. It

was an eerie experience to see an almostpanoramic view of London as we darted from oneroom to another, spotting the landmarks as if itwere a game. The London Eye was lit up, the BTtower was towering nearby and so it went on – wecould even see Wembley Stadium. Morning wouldbring more detail to this wonderful canvas as HydePark, right below us, came to life.

And then we began to take on board the vastnessof our room – a wonderful lounge with the mostinviting sofas, huge plasma screens, our own diningtable and more. We had been transferred to anoasis and were four kids in a sweet shop. We hadinterconnecting rooms, and for four people it wasa perfect amount of space to relax and unwind forthe weekend.

We had some time before dinner to toast our goodfortune with a drink from the mini bar – we hadn’t

actually done anything but why not?! Mindful thatwe had to make our 8pm dinner reservation forIsland Grill, we unglued our eyes from the fabulousviews and made our way downstairs.

Island Grill didn’t let us down as we continued onour journey of euphoria. Sitting down to eat as afamily was a rare joy in itself, but to cap it off withgreat food and drink made this a weekend toremember. We enjoyed a breakfast banquet in theroom and really, when the time came, struggled tocheck out!

As the website says, ‘There are many things thatkeep our guests returning to Lancaster Londonagain and again, but there is one more tangibleelement that has left our guests impressedcountless times - the views.’

The background provided in our first article withSarah is important and it helps sets the scene. With fifteen years sales, management andgeneralist HR experience, Sarah’s backgroundwithin different market sectors andorganisations has given her an incrediblyinvaluable understanding of her clients’collective needs.

What strikes me about Sarah is that despite heryears she has a wealth of knowledge in bothbusiness and human resources. It's really quiteastonishing the progress the business has made inthree short years which is down to the dedicationand standards Sarah has set herself and thecompany.

So where did it all start to change for Sarah?“Genuinely, looking back at the past two years, it’sreally hard to believe that the business has comeso far. I’ve been really lucky with the relationships Ihave built with my clients and their success hascontributed to the success of HR2YOU.” Modest asever, Sarah explains that this is a world away fromwhere she would have imagined to be in year threeof business, yet she is extremely excited about notonly growing her clients’ businesses but HR2YOUas well.

Sarah has to pinch herself that she now heads upa team of five, with plenty of scope on the horizonfor further expansion. “It's amazing that this time 2

years ago I would never have thought that by nowI’d be running a business with five members of staffwho are qualified in health & safety, employmentlaw and payroll, adding even more value to thelevel of service we can provide to our clients.”

HR2YOU now has an impressive portfolio of clients, many of whom are expanding. The company hasjust started a new relationship with a largeautomotive company in Essex helping with theirnew Helpdesk. For expanding clients, HR2YOU ishelping with back office processes, recruiting salesteams, implementing a management developmentprogramme and commission structure as well ashelping with their ISO standards and Investors inPeople criteria. This has all given Sarah the taste formore.

Sarah explains that as the company has grown ithas also allowed her to work on bigger and moreinteresting projects, including delivering ILM(Institute of Leadership and Management) trainingcourses, presenting at a number of events includingB4 workshops, working with clients on extensivenational expansion plans, implementing andmanaging a new sales team including designingcommission structures to incentivise staff.

“I want to expand HR2YOU further now. I can seehow we can develop further and have ambitionsto develop HR2YOU offices in other regions. I’mnot afraid of growth as I have seen how we have

been able to cope so far with clients pushing intonew arenas and we have managed withoutproblems. I have a real appetite to grow thisbusiness, I have a thirst for knowledge and love tofind out more about businesses in new sectors andrelish the challenge of a new client in a completelydifferent sector with its own dynamics.”

Sarah is rightly proud of what she has achieved andbelieves that relationships with her clients are at theroot of her business. “It speaks volumes that all ofmy customers are still with me. It’s all aboutbuilding long term relationships and I really believethat becoming part of the senior managementteam for many of my clients allows me tounderstand what motivates them as a business andas an employer.”

The future looks exciting for Sarah and HR2YOUwith new ventures in training, plans to work morein London and develop the network of HR2YOUoffices. I wouldn’t bet against this young ladydelivering that and more over the next two years. For more information about HR2YOU and talkingto Sarah about your HR requirements, contactSarah at [email protected].

With over sixty five acres of picturesqueCotswold countryside surrounding it, Lana deSavary, wife of well-known internationalentrepreneur, yachtsman and philanthropistPeter de Savary acquired the Old Swan &Minster Mill in May 2010. Located in the villageof Old Minster, Minster Lovell, between Burfordand Witney, the 18th Century mill, where westayed, is alongside the River Windrush. The OldSwan is an authentic six hundred year old inn.

We arrived for our overnight stay far too late. It wasalmost 8.30pm on a Friday night when Sam andLiz checked us in and I recommend you at leasttake the time to properly relax in the room or thebar before dinner. Whilst Sam walked Tina to theMinster Mill side of the complex, I drove from mainreception to the Mill’s dedicated parking area andmet them there (literally 20 seconds away). TheSwan side was fairly quiet, but as Sam opened thedoor to The Mill, the warmth and happiness thatwas to accompany us during our stay hit us. Aroaring fire to one side, jovial guests all around, thisplace had atmosphere. Our room was up a flightof stairs off the bar.

The room was perfect. A huge comfy bed, periodfurniture and a fantastic bathroom. The heart of thisformer mill had been retained but the luxury hadbeen added in ample measure.

Sam showed us around and left us to a quick sipof Sloe gin before we headed back down the stairsto the restaurant.

Unfortunately we had to bypass the thriving barwhich looked great fun and full of character (andcharacters!) as we were late for our table. We werewelcomed by Emma, who was bright, engagingand very knowledgeable, and talked us through thespecials and answered our questions politely andenthusiastically. I have to say, at this point, that ALLof the staff at The Old Swan and Minster Mill werea delight throughout our stay. So often you’ll passsomeone in a hotel, a chamber maid, seniormanagement, the gardener, and you won’t get asqueak out of them. This place is very different.Everyone says hello, everyone is friendly andeveryone has a smile on their face – it really is agenuinely happy place.

Tina pipped me to the Seared Dry King Scallops(which were as great as they sounded – I pinched

one when she wasn’t looking) and I had the OldSwan Smoked Salmon (served warm). The salmonwas delicious, although not cut traditionally, it wasa perfect opener. We stayed fishy for mains as Tinahad the Bream from the specials board whilst Iopted for the Oxford Gold Beer Battered BrixhamHaddock with chips and mushy peas.

The presentation of the food throughout was firstclass, but the imaginative layout of the fish andchips on a wooden board with small pot of vinegarand mushy peas was fun and very appealing.

The meal was wonderful, and we wereaccompanied by a couple of gin and tonics and aglass or two of Chablis along the way. No room inthe inn for dessert I’m afraid – we were well andtruly beaten and the bed was calling. We left awedding party to have the fun and enjoyed apeaceful night’s rest.

I had booked a show around the grounds for 10amand was up and ready to see my host, Amber, inThe Old Swan. It was only when we started to walkaround that I really started to appreciate the beautythat surrounds this mini village. The backdrop ofnever-ending gardens, wild-flower meadows, orchards and the surrounds of what remains of theancient Royal Hunting Forest of Wychwood, makethe Old Swan & Minster Mill quintessentiallyEnglish. The honey-coloured stone of theCotswolds, weeping willows, thatched roofs andthe rushing waters of the River Windrush make thisone of England’s most enviable settings. Largechess boards are playfully dotted around thegardens, ducks quack from small ponds on the

periphery of rooms and everywhere you look yousee the rich dividends of hard work and considerateplanning. I could have walked around all day, inevery nook and cranny you see something todelight, something to engage, something toconnect you with the nature that engulfs this oasis. The only thing missing was another night’s stay –to really appreciate The Old Swan and Minster Mill, make a weekend of it!

Lana de Savary has done a fantastic job of restoringthe hotel. All of the bedrooms are en-suite andoffer all the modern facilities, includingcomplimentary wi-fi access. New formal gardens,a traditional vegetable garden and one of thecountries largest wild flower meadows (forty acres)were created alongside the River Windrush.

Besides the restoration, a number of newadditional facilities and services have been added. The completion of an architecturally stunningDining Room – the Minster Room, two Yon-ka SpaTreatment Rooms, a super modern gymnasiumand work-out area, vegetable & herb gardens whichsupply the kitchen as well as a children’s pettingfarm.

And with over three miles of superb fly-fishing andcoarse fishing, the Old Swan & Minster Mill is setto become one of the countries great fishingdestinations.

There are also three meeting rooms and fivesyndicate rooms with main rooms offering naturaldaylight and a maximum capacity of fifty five.Equipped with free internet access throughout, LCD

and plasma screens, along with audio-visualequipment are available too. The Old Swan is idealfor a teambuilding event or seminars and with theRiver Windrush and Forest of Wychwood on itsdoorstep, the location provides the perfectopportunity for a themed country pursuitsteambuilding event. Quad-biking; fishing;horse-riding; zip-wiring; falconry; archery - the list isendless. The team of dedicated conferenceco-ordinators can arrange a bespoke event, tailoredto your requirements. The facilities are quitebreath-taking and demonstrate the versatility of theestate.

My tour ended with a peek inside the new privatedining room, The Minster Room. This was beingprepared for the aforementioned wedding partyand looked wonderful. Equally perfect for businesslunches and dinners, thickset oak beams form boldlines around the room, leading to a large inglenookfireplace which takes centre stage. Architecturallystunning, the new room resembles the historicalera, coupling traditional architecture with a moderntwist, in the same vein as the bedrooms. With acapacity of forty eight, The Minster Room creates adramatic atmosphere, for both individual diningand larger private parties.

Before we left, we had time for a spot of breakfastand a cheeky home made pain au chocolat. Ahearty smoked salmon and scrambled eggs saw ushappily on our way back home with a taste for lifein the country, a yearning to go back, content thatwe had discovered a real gem.

THE OLD SWAN& MINSTER MILLIt’s hard to imagine a more idyllic place, less than one hour from Berkshire. Richard Rosser reports for B4.
