Corrections or suggestions regarding this template are welcome, please email to the Unit Coordinator using <CBS-BIS100-UnitCoordinator@cu rtin.edu.au>.  Please change the file name in Google Drive and title in the document to include your name, student number, workshop number, and the teaching period and/or date. You can change the document name by clicking on the name (above the menu bar items in the Web page). For example "IS Description-B.Bloggs-123456789-W6-Sept-2012" is a good ti tle, where "B.Bloggs" would be your name, 123456789 your student number, W6 your workshop number and Sept-2010 the month and year in which the assignment was completed. To complete the final stage of the assignment submission, after fully completing this document, you must have done BOTH of the following: 1. Share this document with your Workshop Leader AND the BIS100 Unit Coordinator (see the "IS Description Assignment" document and/or Worksheet 4 for a description of the steps you need to follow to do this): [email protected] (replace N with workshop number)OR [email protected] om (for fully online, D/E students) AND [email protected] 2. Complete and submit the electronic Assignment Cover and Marks Sheet (ACMSheet) in BIS100 Blackboard > Assessment > Assignment > Assignment Cover and Marks Sheet (it's similar to a worksheet - don ’t forget to “Save and Submit” when ready). Most of the content you provide within the information description will be enumerated in point form, rather than long paragraphs of text. Make sure you number all items so they can be easily referred to and give clear and detailed descriptions. Please read carefully the "IS Description Framework" and "IS Description Assignment" documents, as well as the relevant lecture and workshop slides, and worksheet, available on BIS100 Blackboard before completing this assignment.

This document provides a high-level description of an information system. It includes 1) a general description and of the information system that documents the title, overall function, and the users of an information system and what they wish to do with the information system, 2) an external perspective of the information system including the inputs, outputs, information processing and storage that the overall system performs, and system boundary and 3) an internal perspective of the information system including the particular information processors, information stores, and any networks within the information system.

1. General Description of the Information System

This section provides a general description of the information system. In particular, it documents the title, overall function or purpose of the information system, and the users of an information system and what they wish to do with the information system and/or what the information system does for them.

Title

Name of the Information System (NIS)

General Description (Overall Function or Purpose)

Give a paragraph or two describing the overall function or purpose of the information system. Do not describe the internal details of the information system.

Users (or Other Information Systems) and Uses

1. User Type 1 - name and describe the user type (it could be another information system)

1. Use 1 - name and describe what the user does with the information system or what the information system does for the user.2. Use 2 - name and describe 3. ...

2. User Type 2 - name and describe 1. 2.

3. ...

Instance

Give details of a real world example of this information system, if you are describing an information system that exists, or where it could be used if you are describing a new IS.

2. External Description of the Information System

This section provide details of the inputs and outputs of the information system, the information processing performed by the information system, the information stored within the information system, and the system boundary. It should not focus on any information and communication technologies but the information processing itself. It should be much more detailed than the general description.

Inputs

Name of User 1 (or other IS)

Name of Input Group (e.g. a paper or Web form name, a group of inputs)1. Name of Input 1 - description of input 1, example of input 12. Name of Input 2 - description of input 2, example of input 23.

Name of User 3 (or other IS)

If a user has multiple uses for the IS then separate inputs into those for each use (function)

Outputs

Name of User 1 (or other IS)

Name of Output Group (e.g. a paper or Web report name, a group of outputs)1. Name of Output 1 - description of output 1, example of output 12. Name of Output 2 - description of output 2, example of output 23. ...

Information Processing

Overall description of the overall information processing that the information system performs. Do not describe the internal details of how the information processing is done but describe what information processing the system does in quite a bit of detail.

This is more detailed that the description of the overall purpose or function of the information system given in the general description in Part 1.

Information Stored

Overall description of the overall information stored in the information system. Note that the information stored does not always equal the information input into the information system (or the information output). Do not describe how the information is stored inside the system.

Name of Information Store 1

1. Name of Information 1 - description of information, example of information2. Name of Information 2 - description of information, example of information3. Name of Information 3 - 4.

System Boundary

Describe the boundary of the information system to be clear about what parts are inside your information system and what parts are outside.

Internal (Inside) Components

3. External View of the Information System

Click on the drawing below to edit the drawing and include the details relevant to your information system (as described above in the external description of the information system). Please make sure you are using a recent version of the Firefox Web browser.

Please Note: This is only a starting point. Your external view diagram may require many changes to this diagram, particularly including labels and details. Make sure your external view of the information system is consistent with your textual description from part 2.

4. Internal Description of Information System

This section provides a description of the internals of the information system including the particular information processors, information stores, and any networks within the information system. It now focuses on the information and communication technologies used to implement the information processing, storage and communication needed for the information system described in the general description and external view.

5. Internal View of Information System

Click on the drawing below to edit the drawing and include the internal details relevant to your information system (as described above in the internal description). Make sure your internal view of the information system is consistent with your textual description from part 4.

Please Note: This is only a starting point. Your internal view diagram will require many changes to this diagram. The three (3) different types of components within an internal view diagram are displayed in the corners of the diagram. You will need to move them and duplicate them for your internal view diagram. You will also need to label items and include any other details.

Please make sure you are using a recent version of the Firefox Web browser.
